Big news!
« on: January 15, 2014, 05:32:47 PM »
So, we have some big news regarding ARC. No, it's not done yet, but this announcement might actually be even better than that.

First off, we have released the ARC source code as Open Source at Google Code. That's right. Now everybody can download ARC's source code and fiddle around with it as well as contribute by proposing fixes and joining the development team. Check it out here: https://arcreator.googlecode.com

This brings a few new things with it.

1. ARC is going to be free, forever. No more licensing fees are we previously said.

2. We are not going to make a "new" RPG maker. The "Legacy Edition" (which was basically an RMXP on steroids) will be the actual release. We might write our own scripts, because you are technically not allowed to use the RTP scripts.

3. We are going to add some additional stuff to improve upon the existing design (e.g. a particle engine) which means that the compatibility with RMXP should not be impacted too much, but there WILL BE a few scripts that might not work with ARC since we also want to change some things that in our opinion Enterbrain could have done better.

Well, that's that.

Is Tortoise SVN still gonna work properly with it? I've never worked with SourceForge before.

Yup. The URL you are supposed to check out is a bit different, but everything else is the same. Simply check the "Code" tab on SF to find the URL. If the password prompt window from the SSH annoys you (because it annoys me as hell), just google how to cache the SSH key.

RMX-OS itself should work just fine in ARC. There won't be any "integrated" support, but it can still be scripted.

EDIT: Oh, did I mention that we have also enabled the hidden Core Development forum to the public?

Alright awesome!  I haven't posted on CP in a couple months, and I just recently read through the recent posts....and let me tell you, hearing that all 4 of you guys are back together and actively working on ARC again is awesome!

Honestly to tell you the truth, the fact that it's going to be free doesn't make that much of a difference to me as I would have bought a license anyway :haha:

It sounds though like you've narrowed the scope of the project for the initial release, which I think is a VERY GOOD THING.  Get something out there (to us, your loyal beta-testers/rpg makers) and then iterate on that and add more functionality in the future.  I'm shedding a retro tear right now for killing MIDI support, but the extras (particle system, more supported platforms, etc.) will make that of little consequence.

Keep us posted, fearless leaders 8)

We are going to switch over to Google Code. Sourceforge has been horrible in the past few weeks and we've just had enough of it at Cateia so we're switching all our projects to Google Code. This means that I will also switch over ARC.

EDIT: I've started the migration. The new URL is: https://arcreator.googlecode.com

No, currently not. I've been crazy busy last month and this month won't be much different. I probably won't be able to do anything until the middle of May. But at that point I will fix the currently broken rendering code. We've updated the underlying libraries at Cateia a lot since the last stable ARC version, but I haven't added any of them yet. A lot of these updates should improve the performance and some general stability (especially texture loading and manipulation such as blitting).

May 12, that the day I official start my summer break, it also the day I start working again but I'm planning on not letting that stop me from doing other things. last summer I was too tired to do anything after work but a good part of the was depression and an unwillingness to try. I'm going to be working hard starting then to get some progress on all my non academic goals, including aRC and getting my body in good shape.
I no longer keep up with posts in the forum very well. If you have a question or comment, about my work, or in general I welcome PM's. if you make a post in one of my threads and I don't reply with in a day or two feel free to PM me and point it out to me.

This is a slightly delayed response, I've been on vacation the past week.
Glad to hear about your plans Ryex.  You can do it man, you're an incredibly smart guy and can accomplish a lot when you set your mind to it.  If you focus on constant self-improvement, setting goals and then working towards them, you'll always be moving forward.
Also Blizz, glad to hear you'll be freed up around the same time as well, I'm starting to get excited!

So, Google decided out of the blue to shut down Google Code. :/ That means we will have to move ARC somewhere else. It's possible that it will be moved to github. But first we're going to research all possibilities at Cateia some more before we move. We have until August before Google switch Google Code to read-only.

oh thank the gods, I'll finally be able to use git!

In other news I spent today trying to write a sane build system for Welder that allows me to setup and compile welder and it's launcher on any given platform in a single step. It's... not as easy as I thought it would be.

I've found several better tools than I was using but in the end I'me having to write a lot of the things I need to do form scratch.

Basically these are the steps to build welder

  • Compile the icons and other images into embedded strings to make them available to the editor
  • update a copy of the source tree to build on so that our main tree doesn't get cluttered with *.c, *.pyd/*.so, and build folders (the *.pyd/*.so files are expecialy annoying as pyhton will load them over the *py even if the *py is newer)
  • Run Cython on all relevant modules in the Core
  • Compile the launcher and link it
  • Zip up the pyhton standard library
  • Pull together all the depending libaries outside of the std lib (wx etc.)
  • pull together all the libs (dll/so)s
  • copy to a dist folder all relevant files (ziped stdlib, sitepackages, binaries, launcher, copy of the the Core that includes only the compiled version of the modules that were compiled)

I think I'm only about 70% done with this and I'm sitting at around 650 lines of python. considering how expressive the language can be at points that's quite a bit.

there is actually a requirements.txt that pip can use to acquire all of them. so long as python is installed you can run the 'install_deps' file (either .bat or .sh) and it will run pip to install all the dependencies. course that requires a python visible compiler to be installed.

Wasn't all that simple for me. Had to message back and forth with Soulshaker to figure out what was going on.

For starters, didn't know Python 3.4 was needed. Had to download VS C++ 2010 Express to get some missing file needed for Cython. The wxPython-Phoenix thing was refusing to cooperate so I had to go to the website and get the download myself (pip install URL_NAME_HERE). And then of course the pywin32.

Soulshaker and I went ahead and made a README in the Editor about how we were able to get ours set up.
