General Discussion / Really nooby Java help...
September 11, 2013, 01:32:46 am
So I have been actually trying to learn to code at this CodeAcademy website a friend redirected me to and I just did something stupid and so something's wrong and I don't know what I did wrong...

var creditCheck = function(income) {
    if (income>=100) {
        console.log("You earn a lot of money! You qualify for a credit card.");
    } else {
        console.log("Alas you do not qualify for a credit card. Capitalism is cruel like that.");
    }
};

creditCheck(75)
creditCheck(125)
creditCheck(100)

Basically the goal is to create a code where if the income is greater than 100, it prints one thing, and if it doesn't, it prints the other. And then to shove in some example parameters. But for some reason it's also printing the result for what I suppose would be "income" itself and I don't know how to stop that.

So yeah, sorry if it seems really stupid... but I'd really appreciate help.

"O... okay," Sofia conceded. She quickly felt towards her hip, making sure Azura was fixed firmly in its sheathe. As much as she hated drawing the Blade of Winters, if worst came to worst, well, it was always comforting feeling its presence. It could help her hold her own if danger came... but of course, would be of no help if she angered the headmaster. "Okay..." she repeated, "But you have to promise that, after this, you'll help me with some magic? And if we get caught, it's going to be your fault..."
4
"Why thank you," Sofia said, with a slight blush. His proposal to go exploring the school left the girl - no, the woman! - lost in thought for a few moments. It was true; she didn't know very much about everything inside the tower, and hadn't really explored but... well, it seemed really dangerous. There would be a forcefield for a reason, wouldn't there? Some protection for the headmaster, most likely, so he stayed safe. He was important after all. And if not that, probably some way to block out - or keep in - some sort of special artifact? Sofia followed Mephis's gaze, and noted Lorimar was still surveying the courtyard. What if he knew what they were up to? ... what is this were some sort of test for Sofia?

Or maybe she was just overthinking this. Here was some charming, mischievous boy wanting to sneak around the school. Nothing wrong with that, right? What was the worst that could happen in this... magically forcefield barricaded... magical possibly deadly school...

"I'm not so sure, Mephis... It could be really dangerous!" Sofia said, with a sorry frown covering her face. "The barrier's there for a reason. What if we get caught?"

Huh, go figure. The Blue -> Azure -> Azura process was the exact same logic train I had. It would be a long and rather pointless explanation, but basically Sofia'll have a lot of blue stuff going for her (also in The Wise Man'd Fear the main character's sword was called Caesura/Kaesera so it probably helped Azura sound awesome to me). I actually had the idea of a blue-cloaked Sofia first so seeing the mages had to wear blue made me all happy inside xD Anyway it's up to you whether you want to change it or not: I already feel bad for having you edit on my part once already...

I mean, when I GM and a character does that, I have somehting happen to them which causes the character to move in a different direction. And then later something comes back to bite the character for forgetting to fulfill what the player added in. Teehee (I can be mean).
Rose, I humbly request you do this just this once c:

Also it's absolutely nothing SBR I was just mentioning I found it funny! I was actually slightly-brainstorming ideas if I could give the sword an origin somewhere in that village sice I found it a pretty cool coincidence. May I ask how you came up with the name?

My conversational things are filled with them ;~; About half my sentences usually have an emote in them, about half the time xD But D: . ;~; , c: , and x3 are particularly common. I shift at times though: at times I've used ^_^ , >_> , :3 , /o/ , :-: , and... well, lots super commonly. It's goooood though, since it means there's a lot less ambiguity in my tone and I don't feel there's anything wrong with reminding people you aren't out to kill them? Though it is admittedly weird if I, like, begin and end a sentence with the same emote (which isn't too uncommon).

And I guess yeah it probably looks a little immature. But I guess I hope my more serious posts have good enough content that it doesn't really matter? Iunno.

Oddly enough I was just mentioning this to Vell earlier. I was surprised with the control other players had (not that surprise was a bad thing!) over other NPCs since in general my background involves non-PC characters to e mainly within the domain of the creator since you'll never know how important they'll be to the plotline. I guess as a result of being more used to that style, that's what I'm more comfortable with (and why I was somewhat worried when my post ended with a tiny bit of dialogue). Still, freedom in the world is always great and it would be silly (not to mention slightly unfair on you since you'd need to put in all the effort; great job so far by the way) if the story was completely run by you and we just fool around within it. Overall, personally I'd probably find it best if non-consequential characters (say, for about 4-5 posts) are freely able to created and run. Just named NPCs left to you should be left to you, while characters that should last any longer should be run past you to make sure they rigidly fit in to the setting.

... I'd type more but on the way to school so there's my quick two cents hope it helps. Also why does Leon's home  have the same name as Sofia's sword ;~;

Hiii. Though the staring thing is still confusing screw you Vell ;~;

In the courtyard, Sofia found herself continuing her practice. She enjoyed being out and in the air - it was certainly a welcome change from the dust that tended to gather within the tower itself. Besides, her magic was prone to being... unreliable at best, so if anything did go wrong, a small explosion in a rather empty courtyard was preferable to a gust of wind scattering leafs of paper all around her room. She knew that first hand - and vividly remembered the half hour or so she spent ridding her lungs of all the dust that lifted in the chaos. Then again, stuffing up in full view of the rest of the students was never a great idea... and with an bashful glance, she caught sight of Lorimar gazing at the courtyard from a balcony above.. It was always embarrassing making mistakes, and even more so in sight of a council member...

But still! No! She was 33 years old! 34 soon. Maybe in the minds of the elves, she was still a young one, but a human her age would be well into adulthood by now! She would be expected to do the same. Expected to act her age. Making mistakes wasn't something she should be embarrassed about, as long as she learned from it!

It was at about this time Sofia found her thoughts interrupted by another.

"Oh, hello!" Sofia replied with an earnest smile. His compliments were certainly flattering, but deep down Sofia knew she wasn't the best looker within the Tower. Even so, with a station like hers, Sofia was used to her own fair share of suitors. "Really? Well I'm pretty sure I've seen you around..." A pause. "Hard to forget a smile like that around the halls. Though I don't think we've ever really introduced," she continued, glancing upwards and putting her hand forward. "Sofia. Sofia Winters."

Yay! Also quickly editted some typoes and such up there.

WHY'S EVERYONE STARING D:

Also hi everyone else ~
13
I hope this works out fine... Though now I'm unsure if Elven culture works this way D:

Spoiler: ShowHide
Name: Sofia Winters
Gender: Female
Race: Elf
Age: 33
Class: Mage

Physical Appearance: Sofia's black hair contrasts with her pale skin and blue, creating a striking face that presents all manner of emotions upon it. Her hair is usually let out and as long as her shoulders, but occasionally held towards one side by means of a navy ribbon. Around her neck is a clasp with the insignia of House Winters - an owl on a tree, eyes open even in the light blue of a midday sky - that holds in place the traditional blue robe of the Tower of Magi. She is somewhat chubby, and her shirt is a plan white, over leggings that are dyed a pitch black. Her feet are covered in simple black shoes, and on her right hand is a silver ring adorned with a small sapphire.

When outside the safety of the tower, a sheathe on her left hip holds House Winter's ancestral sword, Azura. The weapon is single edged and slightly curved, tapering into a tip about two and a half feet from the crossguard. The crossguard is coated in a deep blue enamel, the same colour as the sapphire that makes the blade's pommel. The underside of the crossguard has the weapon's name engraved twice, while its grip is made of simple, light blue dyed cloth. Its sheathe is a similar light blue, with a cross being formed on either side with suspicious navy ribbons.

Background/Profession: The firstborn of House Winters's life was set from birth. A home and a bed and a family. Her own private tutoring by some of the greatest elven sages on the land's histories and studies on some playwright's greatest tragedies. How to keep a household and how to manage their economic affairs. Battle tactics. Battle skills. Art, surgery, science, and first aid. The magic to bend the world to the whim of House Winters. The education to lead the family to a prosperous future.

But as she aged, it was apparent that much of the work was for naught. Although House Winters had invested a small fortune of time and money on the education of their daughter, and young Sofia seemed to have the will to push herself, those around her would come to realise she had no internal talent. Her swordfighting was fair, she had a flair for music, and could recite the tactics of some of the world's most decisive battles, but for all purposes Sofia was not one to lead. No one could see a flourishing House Winters underneath Miss Sofia. Fortunately, they did not need to, for a brother to Sofia was born and, realising her own inadequacy, renounced her birthright of House Winters. She would learn and grow. Marry into another house, as a woman would otherwise be expected to do.

Still finding the supplied education inadequate, Sofia found herself at the Tower of Magi. Perhaps there, she thought, she would learn better...

Personality: Sofia is a young woman with an unbreakable will. She will try and try and try until she succeeds with whatever it is she does. A smile is always printed on her face, and the self-confidence it gives her radiates out to all who know her. She is kind and outgoing, but is somewhat suspicious around large groups of people and those she find too forward towards her. And yet, despite this, sometimes she would find her confidence faltering and those around her unhelpful. Sometimes, the only company she needs or wants is the company of herself.

Unique Talent: A keen tactical mind. Sofia can think fast and understands how to undermine a foe in battle, and has a theoretical understanding for larger strategy. However, oftentimes Sofia finds herself without sufficient strength and speed to execute her plans.

Other: Although a student of the Tower of Magi for a year, Sofia has trouble casting the most basic of spells. It doesn't mean she won't try, however.

Hi! I'm Dreaming Sun. 17 years old and Australian. I was bored and suddenly started complaining to Vell about having nowhere good to RP and within the span of... umm... 13 seconds, according to Skype, he sent a link here and this place actually looks really cool to hang around c:

I've honestly never really done anything with RPG maker, and have only made slight (... I'd like to emphasise the word "slight") forays into the world of coding in the past. I've actually always been somewhat interested in it all (I'm wanting to do a Sci/Eng course in Uni next year and apparently coding games and stuff is helpful practice there and of course pretty fun). Still, it's nice to meet you all and I hope I don't annoy anyone here too much.
