Video Games / Game suggestion?
August 05, 2010, 10:19:36 pm
I'm trying to find a fun new timesink, but I'm not having much luck. What I'm looking for is an open-world sandbox game, preferably with RPG elements, for the PC. My computer can handle running anything, so that's not a factor you have to consider.

Some games that are not options:
Morrowwind, Oblivion, Fallout 3 (All fun games, but I've played them to death.)
Dragon Age: Origins (Fun, but waaaaay too linear.)
Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 (Again, a bit too linear for my tastes. Plus enemies don't respawn. What's up with that?)
Any MMO. I usually don't like them much, plus they're more difficult to pirate- I mean... nothing.
Grand Theft Auto (Didn't like it, though I'll admit I didn't put much time into it. It didn't seem like there was a whole lot to do besides shoot random people and steal random cars.)
Spider-Man 2 (Don't laugh at me; I really liked this game. But I've beaten it three times now. :()
Fable (Pretty fun, but I've beaten it already.)

Also, not a necessity, but I'd like to be able to play as a girl so I can better relate to my character as I go about randomly killing helpless civilians and taking their stuff. Any suggestions?

I'm not quite sure what the problem is, but I've never been able to put RMXP games in full screen since I got my new computer. Maybe the screen resolution is too big? But when the game is put into full screen, it doesn't change the resolution of the game, but that of the screen, correct? My screen doesn't ever have problems displaying any other full screen app, regardless of the resolution, so I know this is an RMXP problem. My display resolution is 1920x1200. Has anyone else run into this issue? I've tried Googling the problem and didn't find anything (though I did end up back on Chaos Project. XD)

So, I'm trying to install Snow Leopard on a virtual machine so I can use the iPhone SDK. The host is my computer running Windows 7 64-bit. However, whenever I try to enable more than one processor, Virtualbox gives me an error message. I've tried Googling it, and it seems no one has the same issue. Obviously, Snow Leopard won't work well with only one logical processor. I considered creating another partition on my computer on which to install OSX, but I only need it for a single program, so I don't think it's really worth it. Anyway, I tried creating another virtual machine to test things, and it turns out that no matter how I have the system configured, trying to enable more than one processor causes VB to crash. Has anyone else used Virtualbox that has found a work-around?

Recruitment / Radical Dreamers
July 21, 2010, 08:06:37 pm
If any of you are fans of the Chrono series, you may have heard of a small, Satellaview game known as Radical Dreamers, released only in Japan. A ROM was later obtained and translated by the DemiForce team, making it playable for the first time to an American and European audience. This game is a glorified text adventure that tells the story of a small group of thieves as they explore the massive Viper Manor, home of the treacherous Lord Lynx, in search of a treasure known as the Frozen Flame. It was off of this game that the later sequel to Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, was based. However, there are many who regard the original Radical Dreamers to be equal, if not superior, to CC. Though I am not one of those people, I did rather enjoy this game. My plan is to take this small, text-based game and turn it into a small yet full-fledged RPG experience. It's a fairly short story; the original game was only about an hour long (shorter if you knew exactly what to do,) and this remake won't be much longer. Hopefully, not only will this mean it'll be easier to keep the players interest, but also that it will actually be completed, unlike all too many projects around here. Another thing that will make this even easier to complete is the fact that I will need only a few character sprites designed and not much else, as I can draw from Chrono Trigger and the RTP for tilesets and NPC graphics, and the original game for the soundtrack, story, and layout. In keeping with the Chrono Trigger style, I am hoping to use Forever_Zero's Chrono style CBS once he completes it (with his permission, of course,) along with a number of other systems to create a base system that will be very similar to that of Chrono Trigger. The main concern I have at the moment is the spriting; as mentioned, I will need sprites for only the four main characters, one of which should be a simple edit of an already existing sprite - the problem is that I would, if at all possible, like these sprites to be in the style used by Chrono Trigger. I don't know if this has ever before been attempted, but I'm hoping that with all of the graphic talent here at Chaos Project, someone will be able to aid me in the task. Once I am a bit further in development, I will create a topic in the New Projects section, but for the time being, I am not far enough along that I consider this necessary. If anyone is interested in assisting me with these character sprites, please let me know by posting here. Specifically what I'm looking for are sprites to be created of the main characters and villain, namely Serge, Kid, Magil (this could easily be an edit of Magus' sprite from Chrono Trigger,) and Lynx. As anyone who has played the original Radical Dreamers is probably aware, these characters look a little different than their Chrono Cross counterparts, however, I have decided that I would prefer these sprites to be in the Chrono Cross style, as not only is there more reference material available, but the number of players having played CC is much greater than that who have played RD, leading them to picture these characters in their mind to appear as they do in CC (I'll admit that, having played CC first myself, I fall under this category.)

tl;dr: Anyone wanna help me with some Chrono Trigger style sprites?

UPDATE: I've finished the intro and the first scene up to where the first fight starts. Things are going along swimmingly. Once F0 completes his CBS and I have the sprites, I should be able to complete the first release of the game within a couple weeks.

UPDATE 2: I've made excellent head-way into the mapping and eventing. Once the sprites are finished and F0 finishes his combat system, I'll implement those and put up the first demo.

Electronic and Computer Section / Lossless Audio?
June 28, 2010, 02:24:28 am
Sorry, you're probably all sick of me constantly asking questions, but I'd like your opinions on something.

I've recently discovered lossless audio, and quite like it; I can tell the quality difference between a 24-bit FLAC file and the 128-kbps MP3s that comprise most of my music library. However, I've run into a couple problems:

  • The media player I use is WMP. Yes, it might not have all of the features of some of the nicer ones, but it's already installed on my OS, integrates nicely in Windows 7, and has an easily organizable library, so if possible, I'd like to stick to using it. However, I would have to install additional codecs in order to play FLAC files, and even more in order to sort by tags correctly, which is a necessity for me (because I'm a little OCD like that sometimes.) As is hopefully understandable, I'm trying to avoid filling up my new computer with a whole slew of downloaded files, so I'm trying to keep codec installations to a minimum. Probably the best solution would be to convert the files to lossless WMA, but I can't find anything that will do this for me. (Well, not anything free, anyway.) Any recommendations?
  • The file space consumption is HUEG LIKE XBOX!!!1! Seriously, it takes about ten times the space to store FLAC files as opposed to MP3s. >.< I'm not sure it's worth it. I currently have about 200GB on my hard drive free and another drive bay available on my laptop, so space isn't that much of an issue, but a library full of lossless audio would certainly add up quickly. I know this is more of an opinion question, as it's personal preference, really, but I'd like to hear your opinions.
  • .... There was going to be a third thing, but now I've forgotten what it was. I guess that's what I get for posting past midnight.

So, to sum the post up, I'd like to ask: is, in your opinion, the extra hassle and file size worth the added audio quality when it comes to storing and playing lossless audio files? I'd like to have some input on this, so please reply. Also, this post may not be completely coherent, as I am up much later than usual, so pardon any mistakes I may have made.

Tutorial Database / Changing Your Game Icon
June 23, 2010, 06:56:49 pm
Hi everyone! Here's a little tutorial on how to change the icon on your game. This will also affect shortcuts made straight to your Game.exe, if you have an installer that creates a shortcut. Hopefully, after I write this, we'll be seeing a lot fewer orange spiky wheel thingy icons!

Changing Your Game's Icon

What you'll need:
  • Resource Hacker, an executable resource editor (Download here: http://www.angusj.com/resourcehacker/) Don't worry; it's free.
  • Obviously, the icon file that you want to use to replace yours. Either find one using Google, or, better yet, create your own in GIMP or Photoshop. Please note that your icon must be 48x48 or smaller, or Resource Hacker, which is an older program, will not be able to handle the icon file. As this is the same size as the default RMXP icon, I don't see this as a problem. If you want a larger, higher quality icon for use on operating systems that support them such as Windows 7 or Vista, you'll have to use a different program. I'm not aware of any free programs that work with high-res icon files, but maybe Google will turn something up for you. It is also possible to convert a regular image to an icon, though you'll have to be careful, as sometimes icons created in this method can be low-quality. You can find the necessary program, ToYcon, here: http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/gmm/fwicontools.html. (Thanks, earthnite, for this last bit of info!)
  • If anyone is looking for an icon editing tool, Blizzard recommends IcoFX.
Also, if anybody is wondering what icon sizes they should support, he also gives the following advice:
  • If you intend the game to run on Windows XP only, the following sizes should suffice: 48x48x32, 32x32x32, 24x24x32, 16x16x32, 48x48x8, 32x32x8, 24x24x8, 16x16x8, 48x48x4, 32x32x4, 24x24x4 and 16x16x4
  • If you intend the game to run on Windows Vista/7 as well, you should additionally include a 256x256x32 icon.
  • All icon sizes are listed as width-x-height-x-bitrate.

In this tutorial, I'll be changing the icon of my game, Doodle Quest.

    Step 1:
Download the Resource Hacker zip and extract it to where ever you see fit. I used Documents/Utilities. It should look like this:
    Spoiler: ShowHide

    Step 2:
    Start up ResHacker.exe.
Go to File -> Open, then go to the directory where your game files are located.
    Spoiler: ShowHide

Choose to open the Game.exe program.

    Step 3:
Wow! Look at all those icons. Which one are we going to change? All of them! Don't worry; it's a lot easier than it looks!
Expand the folder named Icon Group. (Not the Icon folder, which is usually above it. The icon group folder.)
In there is only one folder. Expand that, and select the only resource inside. Right click it, and select "Replace Resource."
    Spoiler: ShowHide

    Step 4:
See the button that says "Open File with New Icon?" Click that. Go to wherever you've saved your new icon, and select it. Click the "Replace" button. Congratulations, you've replaced the icon of your game. Now we just have to save the changes.

    Step 5:
    Click File -> Save.

    Step 6:
Now we just have to do a little optional clean up work.
Your game directory should now look something like this:
    Spoiler: ShowHide

ResHacker automatically backed up your .exe for you. Handy, eh? However, we don't really need the back-up provided the original still works. So, run your program using your new Game.exe (with its fancy new icon) and make sure it runs properly (which it should, provided you followed my instructions while using ResHacker.)

    Spoiler: ShowHide

Looking good! Once we're sure it works, you can go ahead and delete the backup, as you probably shouldn't distribute that with your game.

And that's it! Your game now has a splendid new icon! If you have any questions, feel free to post and I'll try my best to answer them for you.

EDIT: Added horizontal rules. (Just for you, G_G. <3)

        if(x>40){
            int overtimeHours = x-40;
            overtimePay = overtimeHours*1.5*baseWage;
            x = 40;
        }
        double regularPay = x*8;
        double totalPay = regularPay+overtimePay;
        System.out.println(totalPay);
    }
    public static void main(String[] args) {
        int hoursWorked = 55;
        calculatePay(hoursWorked);

}

However, in the line where I combine the overtime pay and the standard pay, I get an error that the overtime pay variable might not be initialized. I think this has something to do with scope of variables. Could someone please help me out?

New Projects / Forums and Flamewars
June 06, 2010, 08:27:45 pm
At the moment this is more of an idea than an actual project, but I figured I'd make a topic for it so other people can get on-board if they wish.

Forums and Flamewars

Summary: ShowHide
The concept would be that the player would be a newcomer to Chaos Project. Blizzard somehow gets captured by a malicious fiend, and they must team up with some of the other members of CP to save him on an epic quest through teh interwebz. The whole game would be largely humorous, but it would have it's own sort of unique charm, especially to all of the members who appear in it, either as major NPCs or party members.

The combat system (though I haven't determined whether it will use a modified DBS or BABS) would have a number of classes based on the denizens of teh internet. For example, the main character would start as a n00b, but could class change to a troll, or some other such class. Other examples of classes would be Mods, Lurkers, Comentathores, etc. Special attacks would be like "STFU n00b," "Tits or GTFO," and "LOLWUT," which would have various effects based on their general usage on teh internetz. One interesting feature I would like to include that may or may not be possible would be the addition of "Gets." As anyone familiar with 4chan and the like knows, a "Get" post is an attempt to post with a certain post number. In a similar manner, "Get" based skills would fail if they did not land on a certain turn. For example, a "3 Get" based ability would have to take place third in the combat sequence. This would probably require a custom script, and will be thrown out entirely if we opt to use BABS rather than the DBS. Armor would be based on Proxys rather than Armor Level. Stats would be changed to things like e-penis seize, etc.

Anyway, that's my idea. I'm a little busy at the moment, but I should have enough time to fit in some work on it here and there. If anyone is interested in working on it with me, post here. Questions and comments are also welcome.

Alrighty, now that's school's out and I have my new computer, I have no excuses any more. Let's get this show on the road!

The First Floor
~The Beginning~
You have no idea where you are or where you got here. All you know is you need to find the way out.

@Lana:

Your head hurts. You get up from your position on the ground. It is too dark to see anything. You don't remember how you got here; you don't even know where "here" is. You hear a very faint noise, possibly wind, coming from the southeast. Your current inventory is:
  • Standard Clothing
  • Pencil
  • Sketchbook
  • Eraser
  • Paperclip
  • Flashlight
  • 2 Batteries, currently in Flashlight. You don't know how much power they have left.
  • Wallet containing ID and $28.

    @Klayton:

Your head is pounding as you regain consciousness. The damp stone room you are in is lit dimly from a light source coming from the other side of a large stone door; the light is seeping under the crack between the bottom of the door and the floor. From what you can see, the room appears to be about 10x15 feet. A faint dripping noise echoes from somewhere unseen. The door is located in the center of the east wall. You see no other exits. On the door is a large, round circle with with twenty notches spaced equally around it and a symbol in the center. The symbol is:
    Spoiler: ShowHide

    Your current inventory is:
  • Standard Clothes
  • Guitar Pick
  • Cell Phone (Rechargeable Battery: 58% Remaining)
  • Wallet containing ID and $37.

    @Ciel:

Similar to the situation of the others, you awake in an unknown location. It seems to be some sort of hallway. It stretches from east to west. A lit candle is mounted on the wall, providing a dim, flickering light. Your current inventory is:
  • Standard Clothes
  • Pencil
  • Blue Ball-point Pen
  • Eraser
  • Glasses
  • Partially used scrap of paper.
  • A bit of string, about two inches long.
  • Wallet containing $41 and ID.

    Storyteller's Tips:
  • You might want to draw up a map of your location to help you navigate. I will not be drawing a map for you.
  • Remember that you are all on the same floor. If you bump into each other, you may want to compare maps.
  • Good luck! You'll need it!

So, I have to complete a project in Visual BASIC for a class I'm taking, but I'm not really sure quite where to begin. I know several of you are quite proficient with BASIC among other languages, so if anyone is willing to give me a hand, that would be great! Just PM me or post here if you have a few free minutes. The project is fairly basic stuff; mostly just working with random access files. I'm already designed the GUI, so I just need some help with the actual coding.
73
Hex's DB was a lot of fun until it met its lamentable demise, so I'm attempting to start a new RP thread. Let's see how it goes.

Labyrinth
Can you escape?

Background: ShowHide
In the year 2012, through a series of events far to complex to get into right now and unknown to all of you anyway, a number of ordinary people were transported in their sleep to a mysterious dark dungeon. Only by going deeper and deeper into the massive maze will they be able to determine their true purpose here, and, more importantly, how to get out.

Gameplay: ShowHide
You play as the character you designed, traversing the maze. You may of course work in conjunction with other players. At times, teamwork will be required to pass a particular puzzle, so try to stay on good terms with the other explorers of the labyrinth. Of course, there may be times where it might potentially be to your advantage to turn against others. I will tell you the description of each room as you enter it, as well as relay the status of combat situations.

Character Generation: ShowHide
Your character is a regular human from Earth. Please create your character using the following template:
First Name:
Middle Name (optional):
Last Name:
Gender:
Age:
Ethnicity:
Country of Origin:
Hair Color (dyed hair is acceptable if you do not want a natural color):
Eye Color (colored contacts are acceptable if you do not want a natural color):
Occupation (only applicable if your age allows; typically, adults have a career and teenagers will have less important jobs. Please note that your choice here will affect game-play as skills gained in your job field will be available to you in-game):
Distribute Ten Points Among the follow stats:
  • Fitness
  • Logic
  • Luck
  • Perception
  • Dexterity

In addition, you may have one natural talent that you excel at, such as playing an instrument, etc. This does not have to be associated with your choice of occupation.

Equipment: You may carry as much as you can fit in your containers. At the beginning, your character will have nothing other than the pockets in their clothing and their hands to carry things, but you will find bags as you explore. Please state what your character is wearing at the beginning of the game when you create them. You will find other clothing and armor as you explore. At the beginning, I will decide what items you have based on your character design, most notably your chosen career.

Appearance: Please describe any additional aspects of your character's physical appearance. Try and stay consistent with your previous choices.

Background: Give a brief background for your character. It only has to be a sentence or two, but try and explain at least your personality.

If there is anything else you feel I should include, please note it in your post.

Anyway, with this out of the way, let the sign-ups begin! I'll start as soon as I have at least two or three people signed up.

Have fun, everyone! :)

So, I have a pick-up on my cello. It has a built-in preamp and what-not, so I know that's not the problem. I use a cable with a 1/8 in jack on one end that plugs into my laptop's Mic In, and a 1/4 in on the other end that plugs into the pick-up. However, when I try and record anything, it is VERY quiet. I know a few of you have experience in this kind of thing *coughKarpKarpcough*, so I figured I'd post this and see if anyone can help me out. Anyone know a way to make input louder? I could, of course, just increase the volume of the recording once it's all finished, but that would also increase static and feedback, would it not? I've made sure that my Mic input in the Volume Control panel is at 100, so I'm sure that's not the problem. I'm running Windows 7 and using Audacity to record.

This should be a fairly simple script, but as my scripting experience is pretty much nil, I'm asking for help.

Basically, this script should increase the size of the message windows so that they can cover the full screen. However, I would also like the choices window to appear. The purpose of this script is to create a text-adventure style game (similar to Radical Dreamers on the SNES, if that helps at all.) It is, however, only for part of a game, so I would appreciate it if you could make it able to be disabled and enabled in-game. Also, if possible, I would like it to be compatible with Ccoa's UMS. If any part of this is too difficult, I'm willing to change my request to make things easier for you. I know scripting is rather difficult and time consuming, and I'm in no rush, so if no one can get around to this for the next few days, that's perfectly fine. This isn't by any means a high-priority script for me, so if no one wants to do it, that's okay. Thanks for looking!
76
I don't think anyone has asked this before, but I'm sure that it's a fairly common problem.

What I want to happen is this: upon completion of a battle, the victory fanfare would play as normal. However, when the player presses the button and returns to the map, the victory ME should stop, and the map music should play. I've tried editing the standard scripts, and I've gotten the first part to work successfully (the victory music stopping when returning to the map,) but then the map music doesn't play as it should. Can anyone help me out? Thanks!
(Yes, this is for Doodle Quest. The demo's almost ready! Just have to tie up a few loose ends like this.)

General Discussion / RPG Maker DS?
March 20, 2010, 12:33:20 pm
So, I was looking around, and I noticed that RPG Maker DS was released in Japan on March 11. I haven't tried it myself, as my Japanese is spotty at best, but I thought it was at least interesting. I'm guessing there's not going to be support for RGSS, it being a console version. If my memory is correct, the console versions have never been very good, have they? Still, I figured I'd at least share the news of it with you all, in case anyone is interested.
78
Alright, here's the problem:
My computer was working fine, but one day, everything started taking much longer than normal to load, and music and what-not playing stutters excessively. This doesn't happen when, for example, streaming music from the internet. My computer's built in hard drive is really old, and only has enough free space for the OS itself, so all of my files, including my cache and temporary directories, are stored on an external hard drive. I've been using this set up for a long time, and never had any trouble with it before. However, I think that this loading problem is being caused by the external hard drive loading really slow. I've tried connecting it to the computer with a different USB cable and it didn't help. Even just opening the external drive directory in Windows Explorer causes slow down and lock-ups. When opening the internal drive, it doesn't have this issue. This leads me to believe that there is a problem with the connection of the external drive. However, when the same external hard drive is connected to a different computer, it doesn't have this problem. I have absolutely no idea what to do. The USB ports on the computer seem to work fine for everything else, so I don't think that's the problem. Can anyone help me out? I've tried everything I can think of, but can't pinpoint the problem.

Make sure to make the conditional switch whatever you are using for your night switch, and of course change the variables I used to the variables you are using to store the respective values.

Then, create a common event to be called upon the viewing of the calendar, and set it up something like this:
Spoiler: ShowHide

Spoiler: ShowHide

Make sure you create enough months as you have for the values you set in the last step.

If you use inns or anything similar in your game that would advance time to the next day, set it up something like this:
Spoiler: ShowHide

Event Systems / In-Battle Event for Blizz-ABS
March 03, 2010, 12:12:08 am
Blizz-ABS In-Battle Events
Version: 1.00
Type: Blizz-ABS Add-on

Introduction

This will allow you to run an event during a Blizz-ABS battle when an actor's health reaches a certain level. For example, you could stage an impossible battle, only to have your player rescued at the last moment.

Features

  • Very easy to implement.
  • Health values can be modified to change event timing.
  • Only works if you know what actor the player will be controlling, and thus will not work well in games where players can pick all the members of their party. Works best if there is only a single, pre-defined actor in the party.
  • Obviously, requires Blizz-ABS.

Screenshots

I don't see how you could really take a screenshot of this. If you'd like, request one and I'll come up with something.

Demo

http://www.mediafire.com/?flenydyehiw

Instructions

Just set up a Parallel Process event on the map of the battle, and set it up similar to this:
Spoiler: ShowHide

You may set the health check variables to whatever you'd like.
Obviously, you can change the event to make it do more exciting things.

Credits and Thanks

  • Blizzard, for scripting Blizz-ABS.

Author's Notes

If possible, I'd like to make a version 2.0 in which events can happen when enemies' health values reach certain levels. If anyone could assist me with this, please let me know.

Video Games / Rock Band 2 over PSN?
February 24, 2010, 07:07:45 pm
Does anyone else on here play? If so, you should post your PSN ID and we could play sometime. I'm not half-bad, if I do say so myself.

On a related note, I can't wait until online play for FoF is finished! If you've never tried it before, it's a free, open-source game similar to Rock Band in most respects. Check it out if you've got a free minute.

Event System Database / Social Link System
February 24, 2010, 06:50:29 pm
Social Links
Version: 1.00
Type: Gameplay Enhancement

Introduction

This system will allow you to create Social Links, such as those seen in Persona 3 and 4. A Social Link measures your emotional attachment to a character. A character's Social Link will increase as you spend more time with them. Please note that this system requires Blizzard's ATES to keep track of days!

Features

  • Requires three variables plus two more for every link.
  • Requires one switch
  • Spending time with a character does not have to be the only way to keep track of their affection level. You can make certain conversation choices increase the variable as well. When you next spend time with them, the system will check to see if their affection for you has increased enough to gain a level.
  • Optional: You can give the player things (unique spells, combo abilities, equipment, items, etc.) as their Social Links reach certain levels with certain characters.

Screenshots

(See screenshots in instructions, or try the demo to see the system in effect.)

Demo
http://www.mediafire.com/?2tmdiz2zhwy

Instructions

First, create a Common Event named "Reset Link" or something similar. Make it Parallel Process and make the Condition a switch named "Linked."
Code it like this:
Spoiler: ShowHide

Make sure you change the variable number if you want to store your ATES Hours and Minutes in different variables.

Next create an event for the character you wish to create a social link for. This is a map event, not a common event, although you could I suppose theoretically set it up as a common event and create a map event that calls it. Set it up something like this:
Spoiler: ShowHide

If you want to change the Social Link level up formula, feel free to tweak things a little. If you want a certain cut-scene to happen upon level up, you will have to modify the part of the event

Come on, you've all seen topics like this before. Post the most embarrassing thing that's happened to you that you can remember. I won't post mine, though, unless at least three other people do first, since, being the conformist that I am, I don't want to look like an idiot unless others do first.

Final Fantasy VI-Style Party System
Version: 1.00
Type: Party Switcher

Introduction
In Final Fantasy VI, you enter a room on your Airship where you can add members to your party by speaking with them. This script accomplishes the same effect.

Features

  • Could theoretically work for any number of party members.
  • Easy to set up.
  • Room could be placed anywhere (town, vehicle, at save points, etc.)
  • Optional: Plays characters theme song if you add them to your party (a la Chrono Trigger.)
  • It is assumed that you will have a main character who never leaves the party. If you allow the player to pick their own party leader, this event system will not work.
  • Requires one switch for every party member and one variable for the amount of members currently in the party.

Screenshots
(See screenshots in Instructions)

Demo
http://www.mediafire.com/?zikyj4mjngy

Instructions
Firstly, you must have the game remove all party members except the leader when entering the Party Switching Room.
Next, create a switch for each character, and make sure the event to the Party Switching Room turns them all off:
Now create a variable called Party Members, and set it to 0.
Your finished event for the event transporting the player to the Party Switching Room should look something like this:
Spoiler: ShowHide

Now, inside the Party Switching Room, create an event for each member of your party, and set it up like so:
Spoiler: ShowHide

The Party Members variable should be checked for one less than your maximum party. (In my demo, the max number of party members is three, so I set the variable to check if there are already two members, since the leader is always in the party.)
Set up a second page that is blank that with the condition that that character's switch is on.

If you want to play a character's theme song when they join your party, simply add the Play BGM event code after their acceptance message.

Credits and Thanks

  • Square for making Final Fantasy VI, which this system is based on.

Author's Notes
I understand this is a fairly simplistic system, but it provides a good example to people new at eventing and is fairly useful to boot if for whatever reason you don't want a script-based party switcher such as Blizzard's Easy Party Switcher.

Express your Creativity / The Novel I'm Writing
February 09, 2010, 06:13:31 pm
So I've been working on this novel for the past year or so, and never have really showed it to people. But, this being the fantastic community that it is, I'll post the beginning. If you've got a minute, read through it and share your opinion. It's got heavy religious overtones, but the actual religious history used in the novel is from a mix of several Christian religions, not any one in particular, so there may be minor discrepancies between the story and most major religious groups. For a large portion of the story...
You know what, screw the lengthy explanations. If you've got questions post and I'll answer them. Moving on.

Brief Back Story Summary (Avast! Spoilers be lurking withing these waters! Just moderate ones; nothing that'll wreck the story for you, but know that the story is completely understandable without reading any of this.)
Spoiler: ShowHide
In the beginning, Satan and one third of all souls were cast out from heaven after the a great war. After thousands of years, the souls of the followers of Christ had been saved and saved again from their mistakes, but these one third had been forever trapped in Hell because of a single decision. When Satan brings the matter to attention, he is given the option to pick one soul from his third to be sent to Earth as a test. If whoever he chooses is able to live through a difficult life, then Satan's Third will be able to be born onto the Earth.  Opposed to this is Michael, the Archangel, who speaks out against this plan, though his input is disregarded. Of course, with such high stakes, both sides are bending the rules restricting their direct interference. The story follows Satan's chosen soul, a girl named Lilith Black. Hints of this back story are given through the prologue and various in various bits and pieces throughout the story.

Hopefully that wasn't too confusing.
Anyway, here's the Prologue and the first bit of Chapter 1. I've actually written twenty three chapters, but I'm currently revising the first ten or so, as I don't think the quality is up to par with the rest of what I've written.

The Story

Prologue
I closed the door behind me; the click it made was almost inaudible, but I knew he heard it.
"Good, you're here. You're late, you know."
"That's as much your fault as mine. Getting here was more difficult then I had imagined. Sad, really, considering my stay will be so brief."
"The trip wasn't enjoyable? Bad weather."
"Hardly. Can we cut to the chase? I'm in a bit of a rush, as you can probably imagine." If anyone except me had made such a comment, he would have been completely shocked, however, he only gave me a small smile.
"You want me to take it back. To undo my actions of so long ago," he said, the smile disappearing.
"I believe it only just. You're willing to do it for anyone except them." He frowned slightly at this.
"There's a difference; they've made a choice; one which was, might I add, prompted by your actions." I grimaced. I knew he'd bring that up.
"I'll admit, I could have presented my views better." Looking him straight in the eye, I continued. "Give them one chance. An opportunity to prove that they can be every bit as good as yours."
He sighed, resting his face in his hands. "I'm sorry, but I don't think I-"
"Please," I added softly. He was clearly hesitant. After a moment, he stood up from his chair, and turn away from me, looking out the massive window. There was a moment of tense silence.
"I'll give you one chance," he said finally. I barely stopped myself from yelling out in joy.
"You won't regret this," I said, starting for the door. As soon as my hand had touched the knob, however, he spoke again.
"Don't leave yet; I'm not finished." I turned back around slowly. He continued, "The rules haven't changed. Be sure you follow them, as we want to avoid... mistakes."
"I understand."
"Also... the one you chose will be marked. With such a chance riding on the journey, it is only fair, you understand," he said, still facing the window.
"I understand," I said with a nod.
"Do you have one in mind?"
"Actually, yes. I believe you're actually quite well acquainted, as a matter of fact." He said nothing in reply, though he turned to look at me. I raised an eyebrow. "Is there a problem?"
"No," he said finally. "Is there anything else? I am quite busy, as you can probably imagine."
I shook my head, and left the room, already forming the plan in my head. Things couldn't have gone more smoothly.

Ashbrook Daily Morning News

Winged Girl Found in Alleyway
At approximately eight o'clock yesterday evening, Police Chief Anthony Stuart found a baby girl with an unusual deformation alone in an alleyway. The child had no signs of identification, and did not appear to have any relatives nearby. She was taken immediately to the municipal hospital to be examined. Regarding the deformation, which appears to be a pair of black, feathered wings, Dr. Summers, the head surgeon at the Ashbrook Hospital and Clinic, stated, "...[The deformation] appears to be severly fused with the girl's spinal column, to such an extent that any attempt at removal would surely cause more harm than good. It does not, however, appear to be potentially dangerous. For the time being, there is nothing we can do for the girl except leave her in her current state. Apart from this rather unique deformation, she appears to be perfectly healthy." Regarding the child's future, Stephen Black, a lawyer well-known after his work with last year's case regarding the new land development in the city, has issued an adoption request. The paperwork is currently being processed. More on this story will be avaliable as it develops.

Chapter 1

Twelve years later....

Chapter 1
"You know why I called you?"
"Yes. I'll help you, but isn't this against the rules?"
"I think you'll find that the rules are not going to play as big a part as they should in this game."

"Oh dang." The red LEDs of the digital alarm clock read 9:07.
Lily scrambled out of bed, grabbed a handful of clothes that were hopefully at least mostly clean off the floor, and ran into the bathroom. She changed as fast as she could, pushing her black wings through slits she had cut into the back of her shirt, took a moment to try and make her short red hair look like she hadn't just barely woken up, gave up with a frown, left the bathroom pulling on her sock, and promptly fell down the stairs. Recovering quickly, she grabbed a jacket from the coat stand, and yanked it on, crushing her wings uncomfortably against her back. She dashed out the front door, returning a moment later to grab the guitar case she had left in the corner.
Panting, she got to the auditorium with seconds to spare. After stopping for just a moment to catch her breath, she started for the door.
"Sorry, Miss. This entrance is for performers only. If you have a ticket, I can direct you to the main doors."
Lily looked at the doorman in shock.
"B-but-"
"Sorry," he said again, moving further in front of the door.
"But I'm in the band! It's going to be a really boring show if you don't let me in!"
"Oh, really?" he said, looking at her dubiously.
"Really! It's me, Lilith Black, guitarist for the Devil's Advocates!" said Lily in frustration.
"Miss, I understand you wish to attend the concert, but-"
"No! No, I don't wish to attend! Well, I mean, yeah, I do, but I'm playing in the thing, not watching!"
The doorman simply raised an eyebrow. Lily stamped her foot in anger. Who hired this guy!?
"Look," she said, trying to control herself, "See this guitar? Why would I have this if I wasn't planning on playing it?"
"You can play your guitar all you like, Miss, but you can't come in this door."
Just as Lily was about to scream in irritation, Freddie showed up, skidding to a halt and nearly hitting her in the face with the case carrying his double-necked bass guitar.
"Hey, Lily! They haven't started yet, right?" he said, panting.
"No," Lily replied, "but they will if this guy won't let us in!"
Freddie looked at the doorman in shock. "You won't let us in!?"
"Not through this door, no," he said, "This is for performers only, but you may use the other-"
"**** that! Let us the **** through the **** door!" said Freddie. Lily sighed; that mouth of his was going to get him in trouble one of these days. Before the doorman could reject them yet again, the door opened behind him, and Alex stepped out.
"There you guys are! Jake sent me to come find you," he said, his soft voice a startling contrast to his massive frame. The doorman seemed about to say something, but seeing how Alex towered almost a head above him, he thought better of it, and grudgingly let them through into the auditorium.

Thoughts? Questions? Comments? If you like it, I can post the rest of what I've written, although like I'm mentioned, some of the beginning still needs work.

New Projects / Doodle Quest
January 30, 2010, 05:44:12 pm
Doodle Quest is not the first game I've made, but will be the first I'm taking seriously. Well, seriously as in I'm actually going to make it to completion; the story itself is not really serious at all. One interesting thing about this game is it does not require any RTP to be installed.

Title Screen
Spoiler: ShowHide

Concept
Spoiler: ShowHide
The game takes place entirely on various pieces of paper. All of the characters are designed to be like stick figures drawn with a pencil, as are the enemies, weapon icons, even the font; all of it is original art (if you can call it that) by me.

Story
Spoiler: ShowHide
Pablo, the holder of the pencil and author of the Doodle, is a god-like figure who doesn't take his doodles seriously. His doodles, on the other hand, feel quite the opposite. The story follows one particular doodle, who not long into the game decides to do something about this and goes on a quest against Pablo, unbeknown to Pablo himself, who thinks that his creation is still playing along with his game. The story is all very light hearted, and tries to emulate how a real doodle would be (ie: incorrect punctuation usage, etc.)

Scripts

Legacy Class Change by Legacyblade
Tons of Add-Ons by Blizzard
Battle Icons by Juan
UMS by Ccoa

Characters
(Note that the names are in all lower-case on purpose, in keeping with the theme of the game, with the exception of Pablo. Also note that all of the character's names are based on their appearances, as Pablo, their creator, never game them actual names.)

guy
Spoiler: ShowHide
The main character in the game. He's fairly quiet, but brave enough to stand against Pablo.
Age: About two seconds at the start of the game, but was created to act about 17.

girl
Spoiler: ShowHide
Very talkative and outgoing, girl is always enthusiastic about the quest. She also has an unnatural fear of fish.
Age: Again, very young, but the age imagined for her by Pablo is about 16 or 17.

goth
Spoiler: ShowHide
The group's Deadpan Snarker, he always is willing to explain exactly why the plan isn't going to work and why everyone is going to die.
Age: Similar to guy, possibly a little older. 17 or 18 is about how old he acts.

hat
Spoiler: ShowHide
Often mistaken for a boy, and with good reason. hat is a shoot first and ask questions later tomboy, though she is actually more emotional than she lets on.
Age: Probably should be taken as the youngest of the group, as she is the shortest by a few centimeters (not much, but for a doodle, every one counts! About 15, probably.

Hello! Sorry to bother you all, but I have a quick question.
In my game, there is a part where I want to change the font just when a certain character is speaking. I thought I just enable Ultimate Font Override in Tons of Addons, and then use the command:
$game_system.fontname = "Alt Font Name"
and then when I wanted to change it back use the command:
$game_system.fontname = "Default Font Name"
(Obviously, those aren't the actual names of the fonts.)

However, when I use this command, the font does not change until I open and close the menu. I'm not quite sure what's causing this problem.
I think it might be related to Blizzard's CMS, which I am also using.
If I go and change the name of the font on line 335 of the CMS, then it works fine.
I am running the regular, legal RPG Maker XP.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello. I've been using RMXP for quite a while and am familiar with quite a few scripts, although I've never tried actually scripting myself. I've used Tons of Add-Ons before, and loved it. I recently starting a new game (using RPG Maker XP, not VX,) and deciding to give RTAB a go, having heard quite a bit about it. I was impressed, and decided to keep it in the game. However, after adding Tons immediately afterwards, I get an error whenever I hit an enemy. The error message is:
Script 'RTAB' line 2741: ArguementError occurred.
wrong number of arguments (2 for 1)

However, I then tried changing the script order, and put RTAB below Tons of Add-Ons rather than above. I get an error in the same place, however, it's a different message. It says:
Script 'RTAB' line 1540: ArguementError occurred.
wrong number of arguments (1 for 0)

I'm sure it has something to do with Tons of Add-Ons, as before I added it everything worked just fine. The only custom scripts I am using are Tons of Add-Ons v7.31b, RTAB v1.16, and RTAB BattleStatus Blizz-Art Hack v1.4b.

I haven't activated any of the Add-Ons in Tons of Add-Ons, so as far as I know it shouldn't be doing anything, however, it still causes the err

Can anybody help me out? Much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
