Video Games / About speedrunning
February 15, 2013, 08:34:50 am
One month ago, I mentioned something in the Skype chat about an awesome event going on at the time called AGDQ or Awesome Games Done Quick. After that, I began to get more into speedrunning and right now, I often watch OoT speedruns by a guy who goes by the name of ZFG1. But, of course apart from the love speedrunning gets from the speedrunning community, I've seen lots of hate for it. It would be repetitive and boring, but most of all, it would be killing videogames. Apparently, it removes the magic from awesome games like OoT if you watch/play it too often. I've even seen someone say it leaves the speedrunner a little bit dead on the inside. This got me thinking: what exactly about this all is true?

My first fear was that the magic of every videogame would be gone, because I watched too many speedruns. Perhaps I could never enjoy videogames and take my time for them anymore! Luckily, I soon realized that this is an irrational fear. The prototype speedrunner says: "I gotta go fast." The prototype casual gamer says: "I want to take my time for it." I say: "Why not have both?"

However unarguably, a bit of the magic is gone, though. On the other hand, let's take a closer look at the definition of this magic; what exactly is it? First of all, when playing through a game for the first time, you will have the feeling of being on this epic adventure. Maybe this feeling will persist in a second and third playthrough, but when you play it for the fourth time, you pretty much know the game by hard. Personally, I've had this with Ocarina of Time. What the magic now mainly consists of is nostalgia. Obviously, when you watch a certain game being played through every evening, little nostalgia is present. However, I'm confident that if I don't watch and/or play it for a few years, nostalgia will be back in action.

Secondly, a lot of people mention the 'childhoodruining' glitches: glitches in your games from your childhood that would ruin your fond memories of them. Personally, I've never had any problems with those. In fact, whenever I see a totally gamebreaking glitch in Ocarina of Time, I laugh my ass of. Maybe that is just me, but I enjoy that sort of thing.

Lastly, I think you just shouldn't think too much about it. What fun are you gonna have anyway if you always consider whether what you're doing right now might someday potenetially ruin some videogames for you. If you enjoy watching speedruns, just watch them and have fun.

What do you guys think about speedruns? Do you enjoy them or do you think they leave the speedrunner dead inside (lol, yeah right)? Or perhaps you're completely indifferent towards them. I would love to discuss this topic with you guys.

TL;DR: Speedrunners: "Gotta go fast."
Casual gamers: "I need to take my time."
Me: "Why not have both?"

Earlier this day, I posted a link to this article in the shoutbox. It's about the new Zelda remake that was announced today: The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD. However, a number of CP-members have said that they think this is a stupid move on Nintendo's part. I'd like to explain why I like the Legend of Zelda WWHD.

Quote from: MarkHest (on skype)I don't want a remake, I want a completely new game! >.<

Quote from: SBR* (on skype)They'll be making a new game.
[17:44:20] SBR *: However, it seems to be going to take them a long time, as they're rethinking a lot of principles.
[17:44:55] SBR *: They originally tried to convert a few WW graphics to HD in order to test a new art style, but they were so happy with it, that they decided to release the entire game in HD.
[17:46:36] SBR *: In other words, this game is meant to cross the gap.
[17:47:13] SBR *: Also, Nintendo says they're going to adjust a few things in WWHD. First of all, as you may have noticed, the art style is a little different, although it still resembles cell-shading.
[17:48:57] SBR *: Secondly, they say a few design aspects will be changed. Will this mean that the triforce hunting will be removed? Who knows (I sure hope so). I've also heard that originally, they wanted to implement a few other dungeons in WW, but they didn't make it due to limited time and release date.
[17:49:38] SBR *: Now, I love that Nintendo takes a long time for making new Zeldas. It makes them different from, for instance, CoD, of which a new game is pumped out every year.
[17:49:54] SBR *: This way, every Zelda is original, progressive and seems like, if not is, a masterpiece.
[17:50:30] SBR *: A lot of fans have demanded Nintendo makes WWHD, so I don't blame Nintendo for bringing it out. If anything, I'm excited too.
[17:50:50] SBR *: I need my dose of Zelda and WWHD is sure to provide it.
[17:52:02] SBR *: In other news, I've heard Nintendo might someday make a remake of MM due to popular demand, but not until they've released an original Zelda for the 3DS and provided the demand for MMHD is just as high then.

Quote from: BigAceIt's Nintendo, instead of thinking of something they'll just recreate the samething over 9000 times. Milking much...

As I've stated above, there has been a high demand for a remake of the Wind Waker. This isn't exactly 'milking' in my honest opinion: every couple of years, a genius new Zelda is released. To cross the time gap, remakes are being brought out. You can either buy them or you not; It's not something you have to buy in order to keep up with the game. Also, I like how Nintendo gives the Zeldas they re-release a nice upgrade: in OoT 3DS, the Water Temple suddenly became playable and the graphics got a major boost - for instance, besides quality, everything looks a lot more colourful. Now, they seem to be giving WWHD a slightly new graphical style instead of just a boost: it isn't exactly cell-shaded anymore, yet it still strongly resembles it. I like that: instead of saying "We converted this to the WiiU. Have fun!", Nintendo actually puts a bit of effort in it. Also, perhaps, though this is just my hoping, they will actually do something about the - in my opinion - boring fetch quests; I think that would make the game a lot better.

Besides, I think the new Zeldas are each a masterpiece. I don't see how two remakes, which were both very popular and demanded amongst fans, make it into milking.

Quote from: BlizzardI have to admit, this looks like... Wait, this looks like the same game except rendered on a higher resolution and with better bloom lighting. WTF? How is that HD?

I actually like the new style. Yes, the bloom is a tiny little bit-a lot overkill, but those are just preview pictures and here's me hoping they will adjust it to a more normal level.

So, what do you guys think? I'd love to hear you guys' more elaborated opinions.

P.S. It is to be noted that I'm a bit of a Zelda-fanboy, but I still try to stay objective when it comes to these things. I'm sorry if I failed at that.

Mathematics / Tau or Pi?
November 10, 2012, 07:05:05 am
What do you guys think? Should Pi be replaced by Tau?

Information about Tau:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jG7vhMMXagQ
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83ofi_L6eAo

I am by no means an expert at Maths, but I'd like to express my opinion anyway. First of all, I think tau is a wonderful concept and much more fundamental than pi. Radians just make so much more sense when using tau and students who have a hard time understanding radians would probably be better off using tau.

However, I think pi can't be fully replaced by tau or will take a long time to be replaced. After all, everybody is already used to tau, especially the laymen. If you were to tell a random person pi is wrong and that it is to be replaced by tau, they would probably shrug their shoulders and when you ask them later what the circumference of a circle is, they'd probably answer 2 pi r. That being said, the same thing goes for radians really. Laymen and beginners always use degrees to express an angle, but those who are a bit more advanced at maths use radians too. The latter could probably learn to use tau.

Students could at first learn to use degrees and pi, but when they have to learn radians, pi gets replaced by tau.

I'd love to hear you guys' opinion on this matter :).

Video Games / Is Morrowind still a good game?
August 23, 2012, 06:40:38 am
I'd like to play an Elder Scrolls game, but I don't have a good computer yet, so I can play either Morrowind or Oblivion. In terms of graphics, I heard you can use texture packs, so the graphics are supposedly equally good. Now, I heard some people say Oblivion's combat system and quests are quite simple and boring (always the same enemies and bland quests that 4 year olds can understand), while some other people say Morrowind's combat system is quite dull. Are any of these statements true?

Also, I heard Oblivion on Steam has some really big issues with Vista or W7. Is this really the case or are people exaggerating and if it is the case, does Morrowind have the same problem - the biggest web shop in Holland doesn't have new copies of Morrowind, so I would have to buy it from somebody else.

EDIT: I found this amazing texture pack: http://www.ornitocopter.net/. I guess I'll give Morrowind a try, then :).

I've been watching Yu-Gi-Oh!: Duel Monsters and Avatar: The Leggend of Korra lately, both English dubbed, and I've decided I would like to start watching Naruto. However, everywhere I go on the internet, people seem to hate the English dub. Frankly, I like the Yu-Gi-Oh English dub (although I've never watched the sub), so I was wondering if sub really is that much better. I often see people using weak arguments like "They translated 'retard' with 'bastard'". I honestly don't care if they translate one word in the wrong way.  Some people say that a lot of scenes are cut out, but then again, I'm not sure if they're right; I have the suspicion that they are quite the fanboy. So does anybody know if the dub really is that much worse?
7
I've been looking this up on Google for a little while now, but I'm getting the feeling I'm reading tons of fanboys and haters whose comments aren't really trustworthy, so that's why I've decided to ask it here.

Lately I decided to play AC I for the very first time and I did thoroughly enjoy it. I'd like to play AC II, but I fear my PC can't handle it. My PC is two yours old (or perhaps even older). I went to 'Can you run it?' and these are the results:
Spoiler: ShowHide

I don't know anything about specs at all, so my question is: can my PC run this? I don't really need any ultra-super-hardcore graphics; as long as they're decent, I'm fine with it. Heck, I think AC I's graphics were perfectly fine. My biggest concern are lag spikes. If my PC can't run it, I'd probably buy an Xbox.

I would be willing to build my own PC, if it weren't for the fact that I am very clumsy and not any good with making, assembling, etc. things at all.

Now, my second question is if my PC can run Skyrim with, let's say, about medium graphics:
Spoiler: ShowHide

I've heard that Skyrim is incredibly buggy and that you would absolutely need mods to play it decently. I pirated Skyrim to see if it was playable; a friend of mine tested it out on my PC, as I didn't want to watch the intro and know the storyline until I played it, and he said it was quite laggy.

So, to sum it up, I'm wondering if my PC can handle those games on medium graphical settings and if Skyrim truly is incredibly buggy on the Xbox. Thank you :).

Sea of Code / Java Random number generator w/seeds
November 21, 2011, 03:52:20 pm
I've been looking into MC's world spawning mechanics - slime chunks to be more specific - and I discovered that it works with a random number generator with seeds. Is there an algorithm to this generator? I would really like to be able to find slimechunks using a calculator instead of a program :). I've tried to Google it, but once again, he isn't my friend.

The slime chunk algorithm is:
Random rnd = new Random(seed + (long) (xPosition * xPosition * 0x4c1906) + (long) (xPosition * 0x5ac0db) + (long) (zPosition * zPosition) * 0x4307a7L + (long) (zPosition * 0x5f24f) ^ 0x3ad8025f);
return rnd.nextInt(10) == 0

P.S. I do have some basic knowledge of languages like Java and C (I can understand the algorithm above), but I'm no expert in it whatsoever, especially not in Java.

Video Games / U NO MC PRE 1.8?!
September 10, 2011, 10:27:31 am
*looks through shoutbox*
*looks at Videogames board*

Wow, I guess the news hasn't reached CP yet. MC 1.8 (the famous adventure update part 1) has been leaked. It'll be officially released monday, but they (un)deliberately made a test version of it download-able on their website. Captain Sparklez provided this link: http://bit.ly/rj1FMk, promising it would'nt contain a virus. I haven't check THAT link (I used the official download on MC.net, but I can't remember the URL), but it's Captain Sparklez, so it'll probably be ok.

P.S. I'm sorry if there's a thread about this already. I probably overlooked it.

P.S. Lol, I did change my sig: I added the 'Cya :urgh:!' thingy. I really should remove that XD.

Video Games / Minecraft PvP server
August 03, 2011, 01:19:26 pm
Dear fellow MC-warriors,

join me in my quest and conquer the amazing world of the Hardcore pseudo-vanilla MC PvP server! The road may be hard and time consuming, but is also entertaining and holds great rewards.

Alright, enough of this nonsense. I thought it would be cool if we all set up a CP-faction in this MC PvP server. If you'd like to join, come online and enter this IP: 88.198.24.40:25565 game.avionmc.net:25565.

Also, if you're new to MC PvP, I suggest you to read the guide provided on the page.

I wish thou the best of luck :D!

EDIT: I made a small Chaos-base and Brandon he wasn't Branden at all. He just claimed he was Branden and after I discovered he wasn't him at all, he begin screaming that I would've not liked him if I didn't know him and that he was 10 years old and had no friends... The poor guy... joined me :).

Video Games / Minecraft servers
August 01, 2011, 02:50:31 pm
It would be wonderful to have a genuine CP-MineCraft server, but then we'd need a ded server.
However, some of the members have set up servers that aren't 24/7 online. If you'd like some members to join, make a response to this topic. We'll have a clear overview of which servers are online and which aren't. This way the shoutbox won't be spammed with messages about servers being online/offline.

Please use this format (credits for the code go to G_G):
IP = your_networkname_here:your_port_here
Hamachi networkname = your_networkname_here
Hamachi password = your_hamachi_password

Example: ShowHide

IP = 308.550.103.890:28893

Hamachi password = hello_world

Would result in:

IP = 308.550.103.890:28893
Hamachi name = MC_Server
Hamachipassword = hello_world

NB: Please change the your_ip_here and the your_port_here inside the

Recruitment / Homies unite! - The videogame
July 29, 2011, 04:08:16 pm
Attention homies of slyfoxhound,

Today at 08:47:29 PM SBR*: Homies unite!! Anyway, I was thinking about making a Homies Unite - the videogame or suchlike to honour slyfox, featuring Hipo (duh), Puppycop, Snowy and Frank. Let's make it a team project :).
Today at 08:48:24 PM SBR*: I thought of this today, so tomorrow I might hate it, but w/e. Just throwing it out there :).

But before starting up the project, I'd like to see how many homies are around here and who will support this. So, go forth and post :D!

P.S. For those who don't know who slyfoxhound is: he is a great minecraft Let's Play commentator with a fantastic and active subscriber base. He interacts very well with his subcribers, who he calls his 'homies'. If you haven't seen any vid of him yet, please check one out :).

Welcome! / And I'm back!
June 17, 2011, 11:35:39 am
Hello all!

So, it's been about 2 months since I have last posted here... This was due to some problems I had with my OCD, especially considering this forum.

But I started to miss this site and the members. I now have professional help, although there has just been one session, but I hope it will soon make progress. Ergo, now I'm back and I hope I don't have to leave again. Expect to see me around more often now :D.

Welcome! / I'm back, but I wasn't actually gone...
November 13, 2010, 07:16:16 am
Hey all!

I'm back, but some of you might have noticed that I have been online almost every day. I just haven't been really active... I've been busy playing a game. Too bad, the server is down for now, so I'm taking a look at CP :D. Yes, I've worked a tiny bit on REMEXOS, but I guess it'll take a while before it's finished... I hope you don't really mind :urgh:... Sorry :(...

Well, I'll try to be more active the upcoming months...

Has something special happened? Any great news about REMEXOS?

Cya :urgh:!

Welcome! / Back!
September 28, 2010, 04:07:39 pm
Hello all!

I have been busy with school lately, and I haven't been able to log on. Well, I WAS able to log on, but I wanted to do other things too, you know :P. I mean: those 5 hours free time in the week could be spent in an other way. But now I'm back, and I won't let school get between me and CP/REMEXOS again, oh no!

Did I miss anything?

I hope those few weeks without me were great! :urgh:

General Discussion / Cellshaded - Feedback please
June 29, 2010, 06:16:07 am
Hello all!

Why is there no resource troubleshooting board? Well, I think my topic has to be here?

As you've maybe heard in the General Discussion board, I'm back and I want to continue my RMX-OS game - a game I'm planning to make cell-shaded. I looked good at some SS's of cell-shaded game (TLOZ: WW FTW :P!), and I figured how to make something cell-shaded. So, I made a tree cell-shaded (took me over two hours) and made a shadow auto-tile (took me a bit less than 1 hour): can somebody give me some feedback please?

This is my first REAL edit, one of my first attempts to pixel-arting and my first-autotile ever, so that might be the reason why it took so long.

IMG - version1: ShowHide

IMG - version2: ShowHide

NOTE: The question now is: contours or not for the trees. The stumps HAVE got contours atm.

Thank you! :urgh:

Troubleshooting / Help / Back! MySQL trouble...
June 28, 2010, 11:29:03 am
Hello all!

I'm back again after... what?... three - or four - weeks!  So I decided to celebrate this great happening and shoot you all! Oh, wait, wrong text. Ahum: So I decided to celebrate this great happening and shoot wolfspirit! I'm also wanting to take up my RMX-OS game again. I still can't do anything, since my computer just disagrees with me wanting to use MySQL. Whenever I try to do it, I get an error - this error to be exact:

Error: ShowHide
Error Nr. 1045
Access denied for user 'root@localhost' (using password: YES)

And sometimes I get a different error, something likes this:

Error: ShowHide
Host 'localhost' is not allowed to connect to the server

These errors occur whenever I try to do ANYTHING with MySQL: from configurating to using the configuration file thingy from RMX-OS.

I've tried to look it up on the internet, and I found something: I first had to stop the program from running, then I had to go to a prompt, enter alot of things, and then I had to run it again. That's where it didn't work again: I wasn't able to start it.

I hope you can help me out :D! Cya all :urgh:!

P.S. I figured that this isn't a problem with the script, so I thought this would be the right place :D.

Who do you think will win the Eurovision Song-whatevertheycallitinEnglish? And what do you think of Sieneke from Holland? "Shalalie shalala shalalie shalala, 't gaat niet uit m'n kop". Compared to the others, she might actually win O.o.

Hello all,

I'm making a script for the RPG academy game by the Niche, but I keep on getting an error. The error is: The RGSS Player doesn't work. It's a transelation from Dutch, so it might not be  the exact error. I get this error if I enter the scene of my script (Scene_Note) by using
$scene = Scene_Note.new
, then going back to the map:
$scene = Scene_Map.new
and then going to ANY other scene. I tried battles, the menu and Scene_Note. This only applies to maps with auto-tiles. The scene has the background of the map. I called that background with
@back = Spriteset_Map.new
and I closed it with
@back = nil
. Is this a known error?

Thank you in advance!

-SBR*

P.S. I don't post the script because I'm a bit paranoid about that: I'm afraid somebody is gonna use it while it isn't published yet... I can send it in a PM of course!

Welcome! / Hello!
February 07, 2010, 04:12:07 am
Hello all!

I am new at Chaos-Project. Here is a little introduction of myself:

I started with 2k/3 a long time ago, but stopped with it after a while. I didn't even touch RPG Maker for a while, but when RMXP was released, I tried it and liked it  :D. I made ugly maps and such, but I became better...
A while ago I watched willowsidhe's mapping tutorials at youtube. Mapping: check. By accident, I saw that you can make awesome evented systems. So I started eventing. There was one thing left: Scripting. I wanted to do that too, so I read some tutorials, and I just made my first CMS (and a really ugly and simple HUD...)!

Well, that's it. Oh, and btw, I LOVE this site! And Blizz, you're AWESOME  :haha:!

-SBR*
