Has anyone discovered a way to use a gamepad with Babs (without using 3rd party programs)?

Nope. The Input module doesn't support it.

You could use something like Xpadder or Joy2Key if you just want to have it for personal use, but if you want to have gamepad support in the version you distribute, you'd have to give instructions on how users could set it up that way as well.
