It depends on what kind of world map you're aiming for. If you just want to display a picture, you can just use a common event to show a picture and disable player movement until a button is pressed. If you want it to be more like Pokemon, where you can move a cursor around the map to view details, then that will require a script. I'm sure there's some kind of world map script out there--it's too common of a feature.
