XP Mode runs each XP app in a separate API, i.e. integrated virtual desktop.
They're making it compatible without having to keep all the old problems in the OS

thumbs up, this is a great idea

now all they need to do is make unsigned Visual Styles allowed by default, and I'll be all over 7.

This is what Mac OS X did when it first came out. It shipped with OS 9 and featured a full virtual mode. Very useful, it is, though there's a big hit to performance.

Maybe they'll finally clean up the rough edges on it :/
