<_<;

As you may know (Or not), AT&T is a widely popular mobile phone company and of the like. However, they also have a DSL service. 15.5% of American Internet users are using the AT&T Internet Service (Apparently me as well considering they ate up SBC Global, or something). Just recently, AT&T has blocked users from viewing parts of img.4chan.org (Particularly /b/ and /r9k/). This isn't just a hoax as well. /b/ can't load for me. /r9k/ can't load for me. The other boards can.

This isn't just a joke. This is freakin' net censorship. Why are we, or, well, the users of AT&T, not allowed to view some part of the Internet? That's not right. This can easily produce a chain effect, especially if AT&T gains money from it. What happens? Other ISPs will most likely follow with AT&T if such actions are popular. This might result in not only 4chan being blocked, but other sites that are...yeah, I'm sure you get the picture.

And uh...have a video as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWt0XUocViE

Basically, if you can do anything to stop AT&T from censoring 4chan, do it.

=3=

I feel so helpless considering this place uses AT&T.

OH HELL NAW!  THEY DID WHAAAAAAAT?

yeah, this isn't going to last.  Great thing about the internet is the number of people using it.  Imagine if all the internet junkies who pay for the high speed AT&T connections suddenly switched providers.  They'd be hit hard.

The internet should always stay free and open.  And those who already understand it have the numbers to enforce that.

Ryex

And so it begins. the first blow has been dealt. and the riots start. welcome to customer hell AT&T! I promise you that your stay will NOT be pleasant! MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

QuoteIt's because the site is a constant target of DDOS attacks that were routed through AT&T servers. AT&T blocked it because their bandwidth was spiraling out of control. Spread the word. It's not about content, it's about AT&T's pocketbook. And that's worse.

I can't verify anything or the legitimacy of this quote. It's from a 4channer or something.

This is just wrong. I don't think other providers will follow. AT&T will probably start losing customers because of this and people will go with other providers. When the other providers realize this, there's no way they will follow with this. of course, if nothing changes, the other providers might go with it. But isn't that kind of pointless again? If all providers would block a specific set of sites, nobody would be able to access them. I wonder if they can be sued for that, something like restricting the freedom of speech.

as a matter of fact they can. all the wrath of the internet is going to be unleashed if they don't unblock it

and BTW Starrod the quote CAN'T be true because AT&T has yet to tell ANYONE the reason they are blocking it two I have never heard of failchan getting DDOSed but  that is no reason to block it as they can't possibly be effected by it, 3 they only block PART of the site which means that it would as effective as an Ice cube at stopping a DDOS attack

hmm, seems they unblocked it now.  Supposedly, they were "following the practices of their policy department," which basically means that they were doing whatever they wanted.  I doubt that people are going to let this go.

fugibo

They did it because 4chan was sending out massive DDoS attacks, that's all. And guess what? If you don't like crap service, stay the HELL away from AT&T. And Comcast, for that matter.

Ryex

what are you talking about Longfellow? 4chan was telling everyone NOT to DDoS them as it would only justify the block! they encouraged people to protest through the legal channels believe it or not.

if your going to comment here make sure you know what is going on first.

The update on the situation is that the DDoS attacks were happening BEFORE 4chan was blocked, and at&t presented them as the reason to block.  And just because a site admin says not to doesn't mean a bunch of angry under-aged "script kiddies" won't do the only thing they know how.  But Longfellow was talking about attacks that happened before the block, not during it.

ISPs have been lobbying congress for years trying to get them to allow selling net the way they sell cable.

FOR A LOW PRICE OF $15.99 A MONTH YOU GET ACCESS TO 100 GREAT SEARCH ENGINES INCLUDING GOOGLE, ASK.COM AND BING!

They've failed miserably, but if they're allowed to continue with this, then the internet will no longer be a place where anyone can put up a website and be successful, only the people who can bribe the ISPs to promote their websites will be able to get traffic, and they can block whoever they want and there goes the internet.

And such is the current state of the internet in Europe and Asia =(

Sorry SRK, I have to make you look like an idiot for a moment.

Anyways, this could easily become a nice debate regarding internet neutrality, so why not move this into intelligent debate and let the fun begin?

Rule 2: ShowHide

Because we're all pro-neutrality. I'm only defending AT&T in this instance because blocking DDoS attacks is a *good* thing, if they were really coming from 4chan.

if that's the reason, then they are perfectly entitled to do that.  DDOS is a federal offense if I'm not mistaken.

The thing happened three days ago when you posted. Of course it's back up now, AT&T only blocked it for a day or less.
