So I've been wanting to make an oRPG for years [haven't we all?]. But now I've actually got a decently sized 'team' if you will, and I think I'm ready to get this underway. I just have a few questions;

I found a few free 'mm'orpg engines around, but I'm not sure if any of them are legitimate, or how well they work.

VBGore

QuotevbGORE is a powerful, open source, and free online RPG engine that concentrates on performance and features. With the help of vbGORE's fast networking and powerful graphics engine and some (although not required) knowledge in game programming in Visual Basic 6, you can create the game of your dreams without paying for a ton of bandwidth and a powerful server to support it.

vbGORE is much more powerful than many of your typical Visual Basic made online RPG engine. With the power of the DirectX 8, you are open to all the 3D effects you could want in a 2D RPG engine by putting in 3D rpg engine features from alpha-blending and rotations to scaling and lighting. With 6 tile layers, flexible particle engine and 24 lights per tile, you are able to create a world the way you want it to look. Also, with the optimized binary packet sending and a Winsock API wrapper, you can support tens of thousands of players with less bandwidth than any other VB ORPG engine.

VB Gore is one that I used before and it was pretty good actually. The thing I liked about it is how simple it was to change the features and things around to customize the game. Also, this one was made and is available open-source wth vb6. I've been programming in vb6 for a while, so that's always a plus. Also the community is very, very active.

Eclipse engine

QuoteAbout Eclipse
Eclipse is a free to use 2D game engine. This game creator makes online mmorpgs. No previous knowledge is necessary becouse Eclipse uses a simple point and click system. If the software does not have the requirements you need you can program it with the source.

I've never used it before, but it seems pretty simple and it uses vb6 which I know very well, so that's a plus.

XtremeWorlds Engine

QuoteXtremeWorlds (XW) is a powerful, free 2D MMORPG Engine/Maker. With XW you can make your own MMORPG with no coding in just minutes. If you find that the engine does not seem to have everything you need, you can code it in with our versatile scripting system. Unlike other free MMORPG creation systems, XW is updated regularly, so any bugs that are found are fixed immediately. XW has some great features, so please go check them out on the features page. XW is not an open source engine, but anything you feel that the engine is lacking can be suggested on the feature request section of the forums and will most likely be added. Compared the other similar engines such as Elysium and Eclipse, XW is the most stable and one of the best online game makers available.

Again, never used it but the community seems to stay active, and the features look very very promising. Plus it has its own scripting system, so I could always add/change things if I wanted.

Last but definitely not least...

RMX-OS
Spoiler: ShowHide

Obviously RMX-OS is very powerful, but it's limited to what RPG Maker can do. Also, since I dont know how to script in RGSS I can't really change much without asking someone else to make a client/server addon for it. So it obviously has it's perks, but you never know.

So what do you guys think? Have any of you ever tried any of 'em? Or do you know of any others that may be worthy of note?

Just a random comment but its RMX-OS. Anyway I would recommend RMX-OS, I've tried Eclipse before and its really sketchy, I hated it

Blizzard

VBGore looks very outdated. It was made for DirectX 8. :/

I might end up going with that. The thing is that I really don't know how to use it that well, and I feel like a noob posting questions on here all the time. Ill just have to make sure I read the manual like a million times if I end up using it ^.^

It was made for DX8, but if you look at the screenshots and stuff it's actually very well done. I've used it before a bit and liked it, I just wasn't sure.

Still, VB is an outdated language. xD

True, but it's an outdated language I'm very familiar with ^.^

WhiteRose

I've used Eclipse before; I found it to be much too restricting. I wouldn't recommend it.
