I'm probably not the first person to suggest this, but a game that teaches people about making rpgs? I probably won't be able to do much work on it for the minute, but I think it'd be an interesting opportunity to let us all compile our knowledge and see if we can make  it enjoyable.

So what i'd suggest is that we do courses in different aspects.

Story
Mapping
Spriting
Concept arting
Scripting
Eventing
Making tea

We could add in a plot that tests what the students have learned and so on. Feedback?

I think it might be interesting. Then again, Valdred and Blizz probably know more about the idea, since one of them tried it and the other one's Blizzard :haha:. Still, I could do a section on eventing if you're still interested.

Blizzard

That's what the Tutorials section is for. If you have knowledge to share, post it there. Though, if you have an actual event system to share, it goes into Event Systems rather than Tutorials.

I know what you mean about tutorials, but what I was thinking is that we could a) make rpgs a lot better by creating a fun way to learn and b) it'd be a really cool way to show off our creativity. I mean, come on we'd be trying to make LEARNING fun! And Cubone, you'd be one of the best professors of storytelling ever.

I agree with the first part, reading tutorials can often get boring, and playing one game to learn lots of different ideas in an entertaining way would probably be a better way for a lot of people to learn it. I'm still interested in helping with this.

About being a "professor of storytelling", I know you're thinking of the Dimension Adventures, and thanks, but it really isn't that original. I just made up some really strange characters, and put them inside, frankly, a rather commonplace storyline. Most of my ideas for games are even less original. I guess I could give story a shot, but I don't know how well I'd do :P

Vathno Spee is deathly afraid of soup. As a small child, he used to enjoy it, but one day some scalding soup spilled all over his body, giving him some second-degree burns. Since then, Vathno's always been afraid to eat soup. Until, that is, he found the magical Super Soup Spoon.

The Super Soup Spoon is an extremely powerful artifact that has complete control over all soup. Vathno can simply wave the spoon around, and he can control the movements of all soup. This power is extremely useful to him, because it gives him the confidence to eat soup again, knowing that if it starts to spill, he can stop it in midair and make it fly into his mouth. But such power comes with a cost.

The International Rangers of Stew (IRS) have been trying to destroy this spoon for decades, since the IRS firmly believe that soup is a threat to the overall popularity of stew, and destroying the Super Soup Spoon might actually destroy all soup in existence. Finally, they've received word that it has been seen in the possession of a young man from Portugal! So the IRS heads to Portugal, and tries to get the spoon from Vathno, who uses the spoon's powers to throw boiling balls of soup at these annoying people who say they're the IRS and want to destroy his spoon.

How was that? :D

Okay, paintbrush... Activate insanity mode 8)

The Northwind Guild of Artisans has existed for thousands of years. Their skills are considered legendary, and their artwork is praised worldwide. The Aritsans themselves are put through intense training before they are even considered to be members of the guild.

The guild has a dangerous secret. Buried under the mountain on which it stands is a giant, volatile pool of cheese. If this cheese was so much as nudged slightly, the entire earth could explode. Northwind was actually created to protect this cheese using the powerful magic of the Paintbrush of Dairy Wonders. This paintbrush creates a protective barrier around the cheese, preventing it from moving.

One of the youngest artisans, Lanessa Keeph, believes that the whole business with the cheese is, in fact, an abomination. She believes that the cheese is, in fact, a living being, and deserves to be released. Obviously, she hasn't mentioned this to anyone out of fear of being kicked out of the guild, which would make it much more difficult to rescue the cheese. She is biding her time until the Headmaster slips up and she can save the cheese.

How was that one? In case you couldn't tell, since she kinda sounds evil there, you play as Lanessa.

The Niche

Better, but we've gotta make it yet more relevant to a place where you learn about making rpgs.
The paintbrush might be a central object, but it's only relevant to artists, spriters and mappers.

The player might have to actually get into the academy. Then on their way in, they meet two people discussing the plot object. (I'll use the paintbrush for the minute) I suppose if we wanted to give the hero a personality, we could slot in a flashback there.

The player enters into the academy and learns some stuff about their course. Then they move onto another plot point. About five lessons and plot points later, we test their ability and so on.

Soon enough, the villains make a swoop for the paintbrush and the player has to use their mapping skills or suchlike to stop them. Possible characters:

The player: A good (or bad) student of (insert course here). He/she has an unusual past to say the least. (Of course, we could have the player come into the academy bland and uninteresting an then leave without their sanity)

Professor X: Dude who teaches exterior mapping. He's a total nutter.
Professor Y: Now now children, we can't be making an interiormap like that, can we?
Professor Z: WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND?! YOU HAVE THE BEST CAVE MAPPING TEACHER IN THE WORLD AND YOU STILL CAN'T UNDERSTAND A SIMPLE THING LIKE ASYMMETRICAL COUNTER DYNAMICS?!
YOU ARE BANISHED TO THE LAB!!! (He's based on my physics teacher. That was a freaky class. I went into the lab and sat there for the whole class playing games on my laptop :haha:)

Okay, that makes more sense. I thought we were just talking about the "learning storywriting" part of the game, not the actual plot of the game itself. But yeah, I know what you're talking about now. I can probably come up with something better, just give me a while. Hey, what if I combine the spoon and the paintbrush and come up with a completely different idea? Yeah, I'll do that.

And that's funny about your physics class, that's exactly what I did in physics all the time! Except usually making games instead of playing them :P

Why can't the paintbrush-cheese idea be used? Maybe the hero has to make things he learned in the classes about eventing, mapping, pixel-arting and, optionally, scripting (flashbacks ftw!) with the paintbrush on papers to unlock things and, as the ultimate goal, free the gigantic cheese!

Anyway, I'm pretty good at eventing, I can script (CMS's, Shops, etc.) and I can *cough*pixel-art*cough* (<---Not really...). So, you can count me in, well, for a bit. I won't be a full member I guess... But I still think I can do alot. However, I'm really busy (fix the bugs in my guide on Maplestory, finish my scripts, play Maplestory, etc.), but I'd be happy to help!

K, I've got something. It's not closely related to either the spoon or the paintbrush, but they're both in it.

A man named Boz has long taught willing students the art of creating worlds, sometimes referred to as "games", using a powerful type of magic called Really Magical Expert Powers (RMXP). Boz teaches students to use RMXP to create these games. Actually, Boz has many professors working for him, who each teach a certain type of RMXP magic, each of which requires the use of a powerful magical object. For example, Mr./Mrs. Mapper teaches students to create landscapes using a magical paintbrush, and Mr. Event teaches students to make event systems with a spoon (because spoons are just that awesome). At the end, Boz does the final test to see if the students have passed and are capable of properly wielding the magic of RMXP.

How does that sound? It's not as interesting, and it obviously still requires a bit of tweaking, but it should work.

SBR*

@The Niche: Ty! I can't wait to start!

@cubone: I like the new name of RMXP! Do you play as a student or Boz? I hope a student :P. And let's combine everything: One plot is the cheese, one plot is the spoon, and by advancing in the plots, you learn things at the school! Or, maybe not the cheese... And maybe not the spoon too... But I guess something funny is always nice for a game like this. Otherwise, it maybe could get boring. But that's just my opinion... (I'm not a good storywriter, so...)

Anyway, we can work together with the eventing, if Riku agrees. Two people can do more than one! Maybe some puzzles such as an ice-sliding puzzle and a mirror puzzle (you know, if you press up, both characters (one in the mirror and one in the real room) walk, and you can only walk where both the mirror-image and you can walk)? And I guess a simple banking, fishing, running and jumping system?

I can script a system where the player can store notes, so he can always review them if he needs them.

*Starts scripting*

Riku, have you got other ideas? Maybe a 'job' system, where you can choose one or multiple jobs and you can level up and such for a bit more advanced players?

-SBR*

lonely_cubone

Yes, you play as a student, so that everyone teaches you how to use RMXP. And yeah, that's probably a more interesting way of doing it, if we incorporate the two plots I came up with before into it. What we could do is one of them, probably the spoon one, could be the example that all the teachers make. Then when they get you to do it, it could be the cheese one. Or do you think that would restrict the creativity of inventing a story? I guess that's my section, but I'm not sure how much room for improvisation we're leaving people when they play this and make a game from it.

The Niche

Cube, I like it. However, I think we should do different names. I can do character developmet. The Niche, lord of developing characters. Or suchlike. And SBR, if you're gonna be Scripting Bachelor Radical, or something, yoou should always talk about worshipping a god named blizzard :D.
Actually, Cube, are we going to have a plot other than DO YOUR EXAMS AND GET AN A+++++ OR DIE!!!?
.
..

Well I don't know how important the plot of the game itself is, since like I just said, you'll already be following two other plots at the same time, so it probably wouldn't get too boring. If you think it's important though, then I can come up with some more stuff to add to it.

SBR*

Why must the school be the only location and that the teachers tell the other stories? Maybe there is something happening outside the school, and you have to complete dungeons. For example, in the Cave of Glittering Crystal, you find an ice-sliding puzzle. "Could it be possible to make that in a 'game'?" Let's ask the teachers! And I like the idea of the god named Blizzard. And I'm busy with the systm, beta almost done :P! You're going to be the first one to test it!

IMO, plots that aren't real but told by the teachers as example are a bit... boring... But that's just my opinion :P.

BTW, why don't use the mouse control system by Blizzard and give the cursor you use the sprite of a paintbrush? That way you can do things in your surroundings (and at the end you discover that it's acutally a game you're in?).

Yep! For some strange I kept on using

in the update method, and because of that, I wasn't able to use
@back.dispose
, so I had to use
@back = nil
, and that (@back = nil) caused the error. I set

in the update method for testing, because the script wasn't working, and I thought that this might solve it (you have to try SOMETHING...), and I forgot to remove it. I have sent you the Beta.

Well, I make the variable (come on, you know what that means, right?) @back an instance of the Spriteset_Map class. It basically means that @back 'represents' the background. To remove the background, I first tried to make the variable that 'represents' the background equal to nothing ('nil' in RGSS), wich means that it also isn't equal to Spriteset_Map. However, that doesn't remove the picture of the background, just the variable that 'represents' it. I have to use @back.dispose to remove the picture too. However, that didn't work because of earlier explained reasons.

The wrong way for mapping'll be easy enough. Spriting too, as all you have to do is emphasise the importance of shading. Character development couldn't be easier, 'cos what's the worst mistake a writer can ever make?

The idea is to have a somewhat mazey/canyony feel to the map. There is also a moderate sandstorm blowing sand around.

I'm not that mean though, I usually put small treasure boxes at dead ends.

I hate nothing more to find that I walked to a dead end to find nothing.

Also, a reward helps to give it a more "exploratory" feel, if the player anticipates this and actively seeks out rewards.

Or at least, for me.

Hmm, it can use some texture to the ground (shading). It's also looks just too boxy and too empty. Also, don't be afraid of using multiple higher levels.

EDIT: I failed at this map for some reason, maybe because of the form and too much water. I'll make a better one later (maybe). I can also make some other maps. Oh, wait, shall I make some maps for RPGA too? I will make a nice map right now! What kind of map? I'll start with a forest :P.

The forest's quite good, but if you want nitpicking, I think the long grassshould be used a little more sparingly, and that path could do with a bit of thinning and breaking up. However, teaching scripting in an interesting and engaging fashion is quite hard. Send me some of your lessons and I'll see if you've got it right. Only then would it be a good idea for you to tackle something else.

I agree, I wish I had a better water autotile :/

Also, I hesitate to add much more in the way of scenery/objects. It's supposed to be a mostly deserted desert.  :P

I have a bridge that connects two canyon walls, you can walk under it and on it. It looks like there is only one area where it goes higher but they are all connected. That way the player cannot shortcut through it all.

But thank you for the feedback, I will work on it in the future.
