I wont be able to get back on for a while in about 9 days because my virus detector is about to expire and i don't really have the money to buy another one right now.

There's no reason to be paranoid. If you don't go to porn sites, don't download illegal torrents, don't download from crack sites, don't download and open email attachments with double extensions (e.g. .jpg.exe) and don't transfer data from other PCs to yours (e.g. using a USB stick), then the chance of getting a computer virus is lower than getting hit by a meteorite.

By average my anti-virus detects a virus on my USB stick once in 2 months (gotten from another PC) and maybe once in 6 months while being online (usually while looking for a rare piece of data / software / torrent / game). So I would get more often infected by offline content.

Norton IS a virus.

I wouldn't recommend any of the softwarr mentioned here, but if you have to go with a free anti-virus, use AVG. Even though it thinks that cracks are viruses, it's the one that my college buddies use. And they are computer specialists as I am.

I used Norton and  many other Virus scanners, and the only really bad thing bout it was that it ate up alot of CPU power. Other than that, it does what it is supposed to be. And it for sure got a higher detection rate than AVG.

The "only bad thing" about Norton is that it doesn't remove the virus. Instead it tells you where to download a program to remove the virus. What a great anti-virus. It can't even do the one thing it is supposed to do: Remove a virus. Oh wait, that means Norton can't be defined as anti-virus.

I have no clue what kind of Norton you got, but mine always removed whatever it detected as a virus and I told it to remove. And it never told me to download any program anywhere, and I've been using Norton... actually for most of the time since I got my first own computer with an internet connection. It always was reliable.
Seriously, Norton usually gets good ratings in reviews and comparisions to other Antivirus softwares, except for the performance. Are you sure you didn'r actually get a virus pretending to be Norton? o.O There are some of those around.

I'm using Microsoft Security Essentials right now after my last anti-virus trial expired and it seems okay, running fine, and it's free. No problems with it yet.
