The leaked/ripped soundtrack from the alpha version of Final Fantasy XIV.

Final Fantasy and Uematsu, reunited (for real) at last.

...There are no words. They should have sent a poet.

Uematsu's back!? Why don't people notify me about this kind of thing!?

He was at that anime con I went to this weekend.

Don't get me started on a conversation involving video game music. Some people spent their childhoods playing video games. I spent mine analyzing their soundtracks.

IMO:  Mitsuda > Sakimoto > Uematsu > Sakuraba

...Admitedly, this doesn't account for the "Chrono Trigger" paradox, in which Mitsuda and Uematsu collaborated to produce what is widely regarded as one of the best video game soundtracks ever made. It also goes without considering other notable Eastern video game composers, such as Koji Kondo (Legend of Zelda, Mario, etc.,) Rei Kondo (Okami), Koji Kondo and Koichi Sugiyama (Dragon Quest series.)

/em takes the trollbait

"FF music is overrated because it gets remixed a lot" is an absurd claim that fails to explain how the original work's integrity is damaged by a few poorly written unauthorized remixes. If you had made a claim that stated something to the effect of "FF music is overrated because a lot of people like it solely due to its popularity," you might have actually had a valid point. However, I don't completely disagree with you; check out Uematsu's spoiler for more on that.

Mitsuda: ShowHide

  • Chrono Trigger

  • Chrono Cross

  • Xeno Gears

  • Xenosaga Ep. 1

...Do I really need to say anything else?

Sakuraba: ShowHide
I like Sakuraba's work, but it all has a tendency to sound very similar. Once you've listened to a dozen of his soundtracks, they begin to run together. The Valkyrie Profile OST immediately springs to mind as a candidate poster child: it was some of his best work (imo) and also has about 5-6 songs that are very difficult for casual listeners to tell apart.

Sakimoto: ShowHide
Sakimoto is often overlooked, and it makes me rather sad considering he has a few fantastic gems on his resume. Valkyria Profiles (not to be confused with Valkyrie Profile,) Odin Sphere,  Ogre Battle 64, and Final Fantasy Tactics (Itoi collaborated, but his work wasn't nearly as good, imo) are all standouts.

Uematsu: ShowHide

Uematsu is kind of a touchy subject for me. His style tends to be extremely flexible... he's just as likely to write a symphonic piece as he is to write a an organ infused hard rock piece. A lot of his stuff is hit or miss for me, but he has produced a few songs that are just masterpieces. In my opinion, he peaked as a composer a long time ago. I've always maintained that FF6 was Uematsu's magnum opus and FF7 was his last truly fantastic soundtrack. Everything after that has been a slow decline, with a few redeeming standouts here and there.

That having been said, his influence on the genre is unquestionable. His work has impacted the face of video game music more than all three of the other composers combined. Love his work or hate it, that deserves some respect.

Please don't get me started, either.
First, which soundstracks of sakuraba did you listen to? Yes, he does vary similar melodies in some of his game, but now compare Baten Kaitos, Tales of Symphonia and Eternal Sonata. Not too many similarities here, except  sakurabas style, which is always noticeable. That's good thing, though, at least for me.
Just listen to baten kaitos' battle themes, or Eternal Sonata's leap the precipice. They are genius.
Also, did you ever listen to the music he makes apart from video games? His progressive rock albums? Or one of his piano pieces? They are just beautiful, and sound completely different from his soundtracks.
Sakuraba is a musical genius, and he succeeds Uematsu in my opinion. Few other video game componists ever made me pause a game to listen to their music, for several hours. Sakuraba did, Uematsu didn't.
I'm not saying Uematsu is bad, just that his music doesn't work out for me as well as sakurabas does.

I think you might have mistaken my intended tone... by "don't get me started," I'm not implying that your opinions are wrong, I'm saying it's a topic that's very close to me and I will talk about it for hours. By no means do I think Sakuraba is a bad composer, I just feel his work is less influential than the other composers for reasons I listed. There are a lot of other eastern composers that I didn't feel were worth mentioning.

I'm familiar with quite a bit of his work... off the top of my head:

  • Most of the Star Ocean series.

  • Most of the earlier Tales series

  • Beyond the Beyond

  • Shining Force III

  • Valkyrie Profile Series

...that's about 75% of his work in videogames. Baten Kaitos was, unfortunately, a missed experience for me. It's been missing from my collection for awhile, I just haven't gotten around to obtaining it. I've listened to several of his live arrangements, they're fairly hit or miss for me. A few of the pieces from Valkyrie Profiles and Star Ocean III were particularly enjoyable, but I would hardly say that they varied significantly from the original material. The piano pieces are competent, I just didn't feel anything for them.

Regarding the whole Sakuruba vs. Uematsu debate, as far as I'm concerned, they're both musical geniuses, and I aspire to live up to both of their influences in my own work. Depending on the games you've played, your influences will obviously vary here, and there's nothing wrong with that.  Much the same as Uematsu didn't really click for you, Sakuraba never really clicked for me. I have a few favorite soundtracks that he's worked on, but nothing he's written has been a significant part of my life. I can't say that about Uematsu.

Neither did I imply that your opinion is wrong or that uematsu is worse than sakuraba. Music, after all, can never be fully objective, it's always a matter of opinion. I was merely implying that I, too, could talk about this for hours. Heck, I started alot of my favourite games and anime just because of the music, without knowing much about the story.
Sadly, you seem to have missed the games with my favourite soundtrack, which are Eternal sonata, Baten Kaitos and the tales of games. You might want to check that out, perhaps you'll like it.

To end this, I was, from the beginning, just saying that I liked sakuraba more, and felt like defending him since he was the lowest in your ranking (lol). He was and still is one of my biggest influences. You might not directly hear it in my music, but alot of my tracks are inspired by him.

I included the tales series on my list. :P

I wouldn't take the "ranking" seriously. The fact that they made the list at all means they're in the top of their class imo.

But yeah, Baten Kaitos is on my "to play" list, as is Eternal Sonata. Eternal Sonata has been on my want list since it was released. :( The unfortunate thing is that my play list currently has like, 200 games in it... so they're going to go un-experienced for quite awhile before I give them the attention they deserve.
