@Rose: It's not really common knowledge. I know that article, I've read it myself. But wiki isn't absolute knowledge and doesn't really go into detail. Also, as you can see from that article:

They tuned up the 1G model's CPU as well. Wouldn't be surprised if they did the same during the production of the 2G models sold as 3G without really telling anyone about it. It's not like 412 MHz is much of a difference compared to 400 MHz. Apple doesn't even use the exact same hardware during each production series either. My collegue's iPod Touch 3G's screen is different from mine. Mine has a higher view angle and only does that contrast change in one direction while his does it in two directions. Even though we have the same model, they don't have the actual same screens.
None of us had Springboard or Winterboard installed when we checked. It's a slight difference meaning that there were two different production series, but one was obviously abandoned and they decided to change something. It's possible that they simply changed the CPU. When you have a CPU with more cache memory, it's very likely that it will work faster than a CPU without as much cache memory.

Those articles aren't always accurate because they are put together by people rather than actual personal working at companies, actual scientists working on specific projects, etc.
