Could I request a graphical favor?

You see that avatar to the left? well I've had that thing for the last...  *counts*...  6 years! It needs an update! alas I'm not very skilled in this specific type of graphic design, avatars and signatures are just not my forte

if someone who has this type of skill would like to volunteer their skills and give it an update would like to step forward I... well, I don't know how I would thank you
but I would owe you a favor

here is the original file (I had to dig through my archives for it but I found it)
I no longer keep up with posts in the forum very well. you certainly have enough skill. I've seen proof enough of that. the question is, would you like to do it?
I really don't care who dose it as long as it don't end up crappier that if I did it. and my version would be pretty crappy as I wouldn't even know where to begin

well, in the general style of making wallpapers from a base image, I thinking that the existing avatar (or the bird part at the very least) could be incorporated into other images and some graphic effect to make a new one. and I'm really not liking that font any more.

I'm really not artistic in the that I can see what I wan't in a graphic (unless it is really simple like a graphic used in a website) so if you have any inspiration feel free to follow it.

other wise just try random things a a first step and see what looks good?

sorry but I agree, thats is something I could have done... not that it don't look nice. but I was thinking something a little more artistic than replacing a background, adding an overly and replacing the text with something equally as boring

edit: the second time all you did was increase the contrast...

I assume this is just a joke. Those last attempts.

Yo, to be honest, I can't really use that original. It's way too small. Like, do you have any idea where you got that picture from so maybe I could take the bird from a high quality image? Or anythign else I could use?

Ryex

I had it drawn for me... and the person who did it lost the base file when her computer had to be reformatted...
hmm maybe I could get her to re draw it.

What kind of bird is it supposed to be?

Maybe she never got around to drawing it. I dunno, though.

And Dio, thanks for liking it. <3

Calintz

yea...the original file would help for background purposes. Other than that...the size is good for an avatar.

I could try at it,Its the least I could do sense I am using a few of your codes.

Edit: What about these?

Spaceman McConaughey

I like them. It's just, I feel they need improvement.

Good job, though.

But that isn't helpful:

Put some more effects on the text, and maybe try and make the colors in the first avatar's background not clash as much.

But I dunno. I may make stuff that looks nice, but when it comes to critiquing other peoples' work, I cannot describe it all right. ._.

Ill try new versions to see what fits best.(I dont ussualy like effects on the text sense it makes them harder to look at.sometimes)
I personaly liked the second one anyway,as i feel bird= minimalist
as to where something more like cats=special effects lol

Diokatsu

Second one is far superior, but the point is they have no unity. The effects clash and the entire feel is unnatural. The cutting is unprofessional and it just looks amateur.

Calintz

Unity or not...it's good work.
The cutting can be fixed simply by using an eraser brush and softening the outline. Problem solved.

The fact that problems like that are prevalent is a bad sign. I'm not trying to insult him, I'm trying to tell him what he can improve. I think you honestly don't know what you're talking about.

Branden's is my choice for best in the thread. It's got subtle texture and and overall complete look.

And, 36inc, don't take it like an insult. They're fine, but I'm just being honest. I might disagree with the bishop-humping positive reinforcing that Calintz is doing, but I'm not say you should stop or anything. Just work on those points.

Here's mine. whatever. Threw this together.

Spaceman McConaughey

I like the way that looks. I like the sort of grungy, burnt parchment (or stone wall) look of its background.

And I feel the bird's high contrast look goes rather well with the text, as well as its background.

I am not brown-nosing as some people might probably post, I just do not see a thing wrong. :xD:

Overall, good job. :)

I cordially say...fuc* you. I've seen you constantly run your mouth to people acting like you're better than they are at damn near everything. You're a stuck up, self proclaimed know it all.

Even now..."here's mine. whatever. threw it together." you're like a schoolgirl. you were tested and bested...pride got damaged, and you made excuses as to why yours might not have been up to par, and now you feel the need to redeem yourself, or you never would have made another attempt. You don't like to settle for second best, but deal with it, because you suck.

So he didn't cut it well. I gave him a solution to the problem, so I probably helped him more than you did by simply throwing it back in his face, even though you'd 'later claim' (proof of the future accusation) that you're simply trying to help. Then, you try to use thought out reasoning to prove your points and make it appear as though your intentions are otherwise.

"Bishop-Humping Positive Reinforcing" he says...people don't grow or continue to have interest in things without positive support. If you beat people to the ground by calling them "amateurs" (even if they are!) for every attempt they make without providing a solution or some for of positive feedback (yours is either negative or neutral) and try to help them (wait! that sounds like you!) then they'll feel inadequate, and you're nothing more than a fuc**** bully.

Grow up! Don't respond unless you have something better to say than "hey! you made noticeable errors, therefore you suck. But I don't mean that. At least I didn't say it to put you down." Nobody wants to hear your belligerent ongoing rants of self-absorption.

His was the best "IN MY OPINION..." key words jackass...Then you taunt me. fuc* off cyber bully.
You honestly don't belong here. This is a community. People are supposed to help one another. The only thing I've seen you do is point out faults and put people down all the while trying to sound oh so impressive at everything you do. I've never seen you compliment anyone. I like the praise but I dont mind someone thinking it could use work,
All Art should need work.
the reason art is so perfect is because its so imperfect, only the eyes can tell you what is good or not.

So I dont mind,That and everyone has an ego,ESPECIALLY me.
My favorite line is "Im prettier then your girlfriend"
so if someone says something to inflate their ego.who am I to argue.

Alright, let me stop you right here. I'm proud to say I honestly don't suck. I'm not covering for anything at all. I said I threw it together to merely indicate that I'm not satisfied with the current result. I still think it's at least as good as Branden's first one. And this isn't something I've just suddenly acquired. I've practiced my technique, taken criticism and changed a lot of what I do. However, in comparison to the vast majority of people who attempt image editing on forums like this, I am better. Was I always this way? No. My first work was awful. But I've improved.

And I think I've improved to the point where I can offer criticism. that's much more constructive than "Unity or not...it's good work.
The cutting can be fixed simply by using an eraser brush and softening the outline." Essentially, you just took my entire post, disregarded the real evaluation I gave, and tossed my advice out the window. You're not helping when you take that kind of stance. I might be an asshole, but I'm a correct asshole.

Nice. I like how you know how I think. I'll be sure to ask you next time I try and do something myself.

I'm pretty sure that I've never made myself out to be a nice person. You're entirely right. I don't like when people improve at all. I mean, I didn't compliment Branden for his work. I don't have a certain level of pride as a designer. Oh no, not pride in my work. It's not like I feel as I have an obligation to enforce quality. But, of course, you know me.

Cool story bro. I like how you say you haven't seen me compliment anyone and then clarify the sentiment which is entirely different from the content. It's funny.

Listen, I don't try to be a complete asshole, but that's generally that way I think. Sure, you might not like it, but I'm not someone who doesn't appreciate quality either. If someone comes out with quality work, I say something if it intrigues me. Subsonic, Blizzard, and Aqua are people I tend to respect and admire because they've proven themselves to be competent in their fields of work. I don't give out compliments very much because I have a distinct sense of quality. I hold myself to those standards as well. If I don't think something is worth posting, I'll tell you.

But I'm not doing it just for me. In fact, what do I get out of it? Nothing. I'm doing it so that people will get the idea that a community isn't run on unfinished, unprofessional ideas, but on improving the techniques you observe and create for yourself. You don't get many places with compliments if they aren't realistic. Once you produce work that shows improvement, I'll tell you. And that's my worth as a critic. I don't slide standards for amateurs and I'm honest. I might have high quality standards, but at least I'm not living with double standards.

Oh I completely agree with you! EVERY piece of work needs improvement in some aspect of it's original design. I'm sure if you look closely enough at the 'Mona Lisa' you could find something that could have been done just a smudge better!!

BUT!!
Spoiler: ShowHide
It's simply the way the arrogant fool says it to people that bothers me. He really likes to point out faults only. Then, he'll follow up by titling work (like calling the piece itself amateur. Even if it is, the label isn't necessary) He never points out the good in the work while he tries to find it's weaknesses, and I simply don't like the kid.

I feel like he is the kind of person who uses the internet as an escape. A place where he can feel more at home with himself and make other people feel a little worse about themselves because he may not be entirely happy with himself. He can act out his fantasy of supremacy...in short...the kid is a bully. MY OPINION, MY OPINION...

I didn't even bother to read his post, because that is how little I care about him or his thoughts. I said what I felt necessary to say. Period.

Anyway, you keep up the good work, and I'll keep supporting you. Like I said, try using a soft eraser to soften the edges on the future. It can really help to blend the picture into it's surroundings. For example, I'm no master, and I don't pretend to be, but in my signature you will notice this affect around Calintz's knees. Also, I used a blur on the areas I didn't care about, and sharpened the face, because I want the viewers to focus there. That is where the emotion is, and the clarity helps to draw the viewer's attention where I want it.

Keep the little things in the back of your mind whenever you work on any piece.

not to seem mean but whenever I look at your sig,the first thing I notice is how its cut off pretty abruptly.most of the picture is the bg.And when I look at her.I see that knife and wonder who shes stabbing!
not that the sig is bad,but if the face is what you were hoping people would look at why not just have a face picture, like your avatar.

Because the Sig as a whole is a lot larger than just a face. It's a simple aesthetic and I am far from mastering it. I've seen people seamlessly mold a character into it's background, but then again the colors don't mingle in my sig. They are far from even so that helps with the abrupt cut you noticed. She is a He, Lol...and his sword is in the ground! XD.

Though I, myself, did kinda speed through this one, because I was inactive for a while, but now that I'm back I needed something ... I didn't even add a single special effect to the picture. I have...border...character...background...period, Lol.

Eh, well at least I bothered to read and respond to you. I actually considered what you said as a legitimate response to my actions. But whatever. I'm not here to argue I suppose. Your last post wasn't necessary. The least you could do, if you didn't feel reading my post was necessary, is to not respond. I don't see how you're being any less arrogant than me. At least I don't judge people like that.

Ryex hasn't really responded so I'm going to assume he's just not even interested. Well, this thread served it's purpose at least. He's got 4 to choose from.

wow... all this controversy over such a small thing. in any case

I like what Brandon did
(reposted for quick reference): ShowHide

however, what ever method you used for cutting out the bird failed and left a bunch of weird curves that aren't in the original, I don't like that part, sorry.
other than that I really like the aura background and how you textured it. I think it would be cool though if the textures were more pronounced (not a whole lot more pronounced, just a bit more up front) and I REALLY like the text

@36inc while your work shows real talent I don't like the style, it just clashes in some way I can't explain

Dio's
(reposted for quick reference): ShowHide

first off nice job getting the bird out of the original, no funny angles of white mist
I like how the Ryex has variable alpha transparency fading partly into the back ground but I'm not liking the foreground so much it's like a read haze is filtering the image and its kinda strange. I also really like the text in this one too.

Is there any way that the styles of Brandon's and Dio's could be combined, keeping in mind what I like and don't about both attempts?
this is great all of you are are more talented than I am

Well, I was pretty lazy when drawing those feathers...I didn't add any detail at all, haha.
I'm sure I could do a better job, Lol...gosh, now I feel challenged!

Edit:
So after your comment I just HAD to edit the original, Lol.

wow, ok. I'm sorry but I'm going to be harsh here.
It is EXTREMELY rude to hijack someone's request thread to request something of your own. even more so when your as new as you are.
in fact I would find it insulting you you made that kind of request in a new thread because of how new you are.
when you request something; one, it should be something you have at least done something to deserve, two, you make the request in a way that it is easy as possible for someone else to help you.
you have done neither.
you have hitched a ride on my thread; given a vague request for something of value, something that would take a considerable amount of work; and you made this request when you have been a member for one mouth, have a level of -2, and a measly 25 posts.
LEVEL DOWN --

Lol, Ryexander...be nice, haha.

@Blackfox1250:
He's right. You should have at least created your own thread to request something. It's not right to "hijack" someone else's thread for your own benefit. I'm not mad about, but Ryex is right.

Anyway,
What of the new wings Ryexander?

blackfox1250

srry  :( heck i lv down my self too
again terribly sorry  :(

Calintz

@Blackfox:
It's fine. Just remember for next time.
When you're in someone else's thread you should just read and post your opinions if necessary. Other than that, always create a new thread for any kind of request. If you have questions...shout.

blackfox1250

kk got it memorized ;)
and thanks that mademe feel slightly better

Ryex

oh lol I didn't even notice. now that i do, nice! I would love to change my avatar to the bird to that  if you would be willing to color it ect.! it's really good.

LMAO, alright then!
I'll wait to see how yours turns out.

Spaceman McConaughey

Gonna be honest, I just finished, and I hate it. I think I could have done WAY better. ._.

Spoiler: ShowHide

I am sort of disgusted by it. :/

Landith

It doesn't look bad at all when I just glance at it but as I take a closer look I can see your stroke in the body. If you colored that in a new layer you could probably just blur it into the image and clean it up a bit and it would look pretty good. But everything else looks good. Although I'm not sure if the red really blends in with all the orange.

But as it's not my request, I'll let Ryex be the judge ^.^;

(A lot better than I could have ever done btw)

I just took a trip back to third grade!! Lol, I'm joking! I couldn't have done any better!
But it would probably help if you had the original file. (2000+ x 2000+)

That would have helped you see a lot better.

Ryex

lol. are you saying he should try again with the original file and see if it comes out any better?

Well no, but having the original file REALLY helps when it's time to color.

Anyway,
Here is a mock up with no depth to the Ryexander...I'm not very good at coloring either...

Now that I've been working with this piece for a little while now, I can really see where I made mistakes on the bird's anatomy.

Spaceman McConaughey

I actually would love to attempt with the original file. It would be significantly better.

any progress?

tbh, I would love to work on it, but you're way to picky. If you have an idea you want, you're gonna have to do it yourself. People spent time doign what they thought would be good, but you can't just dismiss that effort. You're not even offering compensation.

I'm not even sure how to respond to that with out appearing to insult you, which is hardly my intention. suffice it to say that your last attempt was awesome and I'd love to use it.
I'd like to see how Brandon's second attempt at coloring the bird went but if he hasn't done it yet thats fine and he don't have to worry about it. thats what i really meant when I asked if any progress hand been made

and as I said at the beginning of the topic, if any one who tried to help me out here needs anything that I can offer, I'll do my best to help out out to return the favor.

Alright, I was just a bit angry.

People seem to think when they request something, the artist should be following specific instructions, but in general, artists should be allowed the freedom to move within the medium so long as the end result is something that fits within the given cvriteria. Otherwise, people should learn to do it themselves.

Calintz

I have to agree with the comment by Dio. I understand where that comes from.
Note...that I'm not saying I believe you are in the wrong either Ryexander. I would also like to see progress if there is any.

Ryex

I agree with you Dio, I'm sorry I gave that impression.

Oh. The coloring has been forgotten by me for a while, and I'd imagine that was an inconvenience. So I'm sorry for that.

I do not know if it's even still needed, or not. So a confirmation on this would be nice.

Again: sorry if it was an inconvenience.

Ryex

It's not needed anymore, I was just wanting to see it if you had done it.
