Chaos Project - Review

Ok, so last night I finished Chaos Project. I saw the good ending, sad ending and secret ending and I have to say I'm only satisfied with the third one. But that's probably because I'm more into seriously happy endings.But I did have other problems with the game, most importantly the characters.

Jason: Ok, I have to say he was a brilliant character. But Blizz, I think you put too much effort into him and not the rest of your characters
Endout: USELESS! Ok, seriously, what was the point in even mentioning that he was setzer? There was no development of who he was or indeed is, his past life on Nibble, his relationships with all the other characters, hell even his sex life! Oh and he had almost no personality.
Lilith: Good character, but I'd have liked to see more of her. She could've returned at the end to blow something or someone to pieces.
Vamp: He was quite an interesting character, again, not enough of him. I was expecting him to return at some point.
Lucius: Probably your best character, well done.
Ariana: Meh, just meh.
Sydon: A less amusing, less interesting and more serious version of lucius.

Expanding on Leximus and Setzer, maybe Duke and Siegfried as well, because I really have no idea what happened to them.

Ok, so it sounds like I hated the game. I didn't, I found it very well done. I just thought that it left a lot to be desired.

I totally agree with you. The character development was like that because I did loads of the game on the fly. If I have had a project plan from the beginning and the complete story written down, things would have been different. But I learned from my mistakes. Soul Bearer will not repeat the same mistakes. >:3 Every character will be unique, yet not trying too hard.

The main problem is that I originally wanted Jason and Endout to be the 2 main characters of the game and that everything revolves around them. This approach had its own set of problems to overcome, but I never came to it. Instead I decided to make CP part of the Lexima universe, because Jason was the only one who fits there properly and Endout become a second-class character. This was also pretty much where Vamp got his actual role with purpose in the game.
Ariana and Sydon don't have explicit personalities because there are no deep moments in the later parts of the game and simply because they entered the party after the most emotional moments were already over. Ariana could have used some more depth and Sydon should have gotten some more mystery. But the plot in the later parts of the game advances quickly and venues change rapidly so that there is not much room to stop and take a look at the characters. Though, I wanted to create a feeling of the characters rushing because they had no idea how far Nemesis was with his plan and how much time was actually left.
Lucius was only able to develop so well because of Jason since they had so many fights.

The game generally revolves around the main characters, not around the world that surrounds them. The characters and the events affecting them are the story, not so much the events themselves. In any case, I will do a different approach in Soul Bearer. Each character will be presented with his present and as the story goes on, their past and future will be revealed. When the main characters are known enough to the player, the story will expand and involve new elements. It will be interesting to the player to see how the characters can handle the new situation. After the first major shift in the story, new characters will be introduced (I'm thinking of 3+3 altogether) which will be incorporated into the existing party. Obviously, it's possible that those characters won't be able to develop as much as the first characters, but I will do my best to avoid that. When you finish the first half of the game, all characters should be well known so the rest of the story will be an interaction between the events of those characters and the world and situations that surround them.

I was hoping you would give an actual review rather than just a rundown on the characters. D:

There's not much I can review without giving the game away :P. The plot was nice, but I believe that characters make a plot, not the other way round. I liked the battle system, but the camera tended to slow things down a bit. I would have preferred babs, but that would've been a lot of work and probably extra scripting, so yeah. One thing I still don't get though, was Setzer a lexima warrior?

Edit: And what the hell is Soul Bearer?!

The same way Nemesis and his goons were able to. They all used the power of the Chaos Machine. Leximus couldn't transform without it either (since he is a Lexima Warrior and not a Guardian of Chaos).

Just for the record, you did have quite a few plane journeys which could have been used for character development.

I know. Main reason was that I didn't have a good plane tileset. My original idea was actually that the during the first flight from Termina to Mandora the plane would get kidnapped by terrorists and you would have to do the stealth mission on the plane rather than in Mandora's prison. But that mostly changed as I didn't have a good plane tileset and battle background. In the end the terrorist idea was split into getting back the kidnapped daughter of some millionaire in Black Jack City and the Bounty Hunter. The kidnapping idea was changed into Mandora's prison later.

Sithjester's got a plane tileset. Battlebacks are another reason I don't use the default battle system.
