Censorship

Okay, this one is about three years old, but I want to share it because I am going through the same thing on my school's newspaper.

http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/2008-02-07/news/globe-high-school-administrators-silence-the-student-newspaper-over-profanity/

The stories I write for the newspaper constantly get thrown out of the paper, and I am then taken out of the class in front of everyone, to talk about how what I wrote was "unacceptable", which is really embarrassing. The paper always assigns me video game reviews, and I have only managed to get one in through some form of divine intervention: a review for LoZ: Twilight Princess. See, I always review games that are DEFINITELY on a high-school level, if not BELOW it, but it always happens. That idiotic feminist bitch pulls me out of class to tell me it's not acceptable. To be honest, TP was the most "violent" game I reviewed. Two others were "Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep", and "Crusade of Destiny(this is a pretty kiddyish Zelda-like game)". Here is why they both got refused,

BBS: "I don't like the fact it talked about blades."(And let us not forget she told someone else, rather than me, which is really unprofessional. And LAWL, these are fucking [bKEYBLADES[/b])"Weapons mean killing, so no."

CoD: "Branden, there are no stories about killing.(yeah, killing virtual manifestations of code and distorted 2D images is soooo bad. especially when they are monsters, and stuff.)"

I respect the fact she basically censored out two children's games I reviewed(do you sense the sarcasm? I sure as hell did use it), and humiliated me by pulling me out of class. Now, we shan't not forget that there are kids in there reviewing things worse than the games I reviewed. So you open up the opinion section, first thing you see are reviews of movies like The Social Network, which are not at all appropriate(they are for high schoolers, but if my stories were inappropriate, why would this be acceptable?), then there are local bands which use a bunch of foul language in their songs. And to top it all off, this rude fat girl in the newspaper class, who wrote up a horribly offensive story about the mentally disabled at our school, tried to make it seem sugar-coated and nice. Nobody really cared too much or payed a lot of attention when they read it, but you could see all of the stereotypes packed into the story. And here, I review children's games, and it is inappropriate. Wow. I tried to get another review in, but it was "overlooked", they say. I reviewed Fruit Ninja, and mentioned you can unlock different blades in it. Hmmm, wonder how that was missed. HMMMMM. YOU SLICE FRUIT, BRO? GET THAT OUTTA MY PAPER. Is what I think the discussion was, because this school is quite literally dumb.

Man, I've tried asking for another thing to write about, too, but it's always "You're good at this, so stick with it. :)", and then what happens? Censored. Almost as if they set me up for it, fucking feminist whores.

Ands if I make any mention of reviewing something more geared towards high schoolers, it's an instant "no". As if we're stuck in fucking elementary school. How pathetic.

Try this. Next time when she pulls you out in front of the class, talk to her afterwards. Don't be a dick, try to be "understanding" for her side. But also make her aware of exactly what you just wrote here (except the bad parts). Tell her that it is embarrassing for you. Tell her that you are reviewing children games that are not even rated PG-13. Tell her that the kids listen to songs with messed up lyrics. Try to get her to have to justify her decisions and actions to you, but in a nice way. If you can manage that, she will stop pissing you off.
Just go after class to her and tell her that you have to talk to her.

Ranting is a good way to put one's thoughts together. Then use those thoughts to confront the problem directly. But do it in a nice way. If you can do that, you should succeed. Don't be whiny. Just try to talk to her, LISTEN to what she tells you and then offer her your side of the argument. If you engage her in this way, you will automatically force her to be nice to you while talking or she risks looking like a total dick. People want to avoid looking like a total dick.

I don't think it's feminism, just overreacting.
Let's not forget that school shootings and etc... are commonly attributed to videogame violence.

It wouldn't. Nam did say overreacting. You may have already caught onto this, but the older a person is and the more people they are responsible for, the more they tend to overreact.

Actually, that's not true, I just thought of it there. Still, it seems likely.

We don't even have a school newspaper and we get censored. My principal is a former dictator of a far away country. :haha: I joke, but he's pretty tyrannical. Anyone who expresses views which might be seen as "offensive" can get into trouble. I'm rather fondly known by some of the less strict teachers as the little socialist. Let's just say our principal wasn't too happy when he filled in for our history teacher and I told him a socialist government would move Ireland forward as a country. Well that was a digression. Anyways, Tuggernuts, if you keep getting censored, I would suggest you set up you own newspaper/newsletter/pamphlet and distribute it yourself. It would piss off the teachers which is always fun and you can write what you want. Also, in America, are you told to call your male teacher's "Sir" as well as "Mr........."? I did live in America but I was only there for two years and I was very young and don't remember.

All this stuff makes the principal of my old school look perfect. He even let me go without punishment when I overheated the school's server. Ah, good times.

Germany sounds fun. I'm not a rulebreaker or anything but my principal just dislikes my political views. I called compulsive wearing of school uniform fascism. Didn't go well. He also hates the way I never cut my hair but he also respects me because I'm on the same intellectual level as him. Hmm, I'd love to see his reaction if I told him I was founding the Irish Vegan Socialist Party.

The only censorship we have is when it comes to the internet. Almost every site is blocked. Everybody cusses and drops the f bomb. Teachers don't say anything, security guards don't do anything. Oh we have security too. They don't even do anything except take your phone away. We're allowed horror gory games on the computer. Its quite awesome. We used to have a newspaper that came out every week but that got shut down due to South Dakota being one of the poorest states in the U.S.

Power Hungry Midget

A lot of schools in Ireland could benefit from security guards and metal detectors, like in Kick-Ass when he thinks he'll set the metal detectors off because of the metal plate in his body. Our school got a private company in to monitor internet access. They thought they'd be really clever and block every proxy you can think off but I got round it using Tor and Firefox.

Stay clear of Tor. It might be the most secure proxy service around, but even just using it can get you suspected of criminal activities... like, searching for it will get you on googles watchlist. It's used by some of the most disgusting criminals around.

First and foremost, studies have shown there is no link between violence in games, and actual violence, and that it's entirely predisposition and psychology of the person that causes things like that.  Does this matter to school officials? No.

Video Games are a new (compared to movies, music, and literature, yes), medium and as a new medium it is subject to massive stereotyping and misconception.  Violence being one of them.  Not many are supportive of videogames, especially in schools, and so any amount of violence in one can be taken badly even if the game could be otherwise childish.

Tell me, do you think the teacher even saw Kingdom Hearts?  Do you think she knows its target audience, or its art and style direction, or the fact that it's really pure fantasy?  Likely not, she saw 'blades' and stuff about heartless.  Does she care?  No.  She is there to ensure that nothing is put into the school newspaper that the school would not want there.

Your teacher is clearly overreacting and treating you as a child, however there's not much you can do about it unless you can appeal to the school board.

tl;dr - didn't want to read? you miss out then.

First and foremost, studies have shown there is no link between violence in games, and actual violence, and that it's entirely predisposition and psychology of the person that causes things like that.  Does this matter to school officials? No.

Very true. So the same could be said for the violent movies they allow to be shown at school, and it amounts to the same thing.

That is what ESRB ratings are for. They tell you the appropriate age for playing. It is just like a rating you see on a movie. Which, this school does go by. If a movie rating is deemed acceptable by this school, they will allow the movie to be played in a class, and presentations. The same applies for games, there is no arguing it.

Oh, I thought if she brags about making a professional-quality newspaper, comparable to a tabloid newspaper, then she should then do the research, and then see that it is definitley appropriate for high school students, instead of acting like we're all in an elementary school.

Your teacher is clearly overreacting and treating you as a child, however there's not much you can do about it unless you can appeal to the school board.

You're right. Although, this topic was never about what I can do. It was merely meant to start a "chatting" topic, to see if anyone had similar experiences, or what their thoughts were. It's in the "chat" section, after all.

If I did, it would mainly be pointing out all of the flaws in my school's administration and faculty. For example, our principle who can't help but stare at the cleavage of underaged girls who walk in his office, the school paying too much money for the pointless homecoming celebrations, rather than hiring a nurse full-time, and teachers failing kids because they do not like them(regardless of how excellent they do on their work.), the special ed program that gets kids in and does not let them out no matter how many of the goals they were given are completed(and there are many kids in general ed who should be in special ed.)

The fact of the matter is that nothing you say will be valid in the eyes of the school no matter what.  When you're in school, you have no rights, not even kidding.  Not only that, but you're a teenager talking about videogames, if they pulled this crap in an actual newspaper then I'd be behind you, but it's a school newspaper (that claims to be as professional as gossip-laden terribly written tabloids? really?), there's nothing to fight for here.

We're talking about a highschool here.  Highschools are designed and rules are put in place to ensure a productive learning environment.  They aren't going to start a revolutionary new system over videogames.  It doesn't even matter.  Maybe if something actually objectionable was happening it would, but frankly articles in an apparently shitty school newspaper don't really spark revolutions in school rules.

I was referring to all the issues Tuggernuts mentioned, not the videogames. If the newspaper was given to the parents then they could solve problems they had, for example teachers failing students they don't like and the issues with Special Ed.

NAMK, I do have rights in school. If I am assaulted by another student, I have the right to go down to the campus police and let them know, and watch his ass get hauled off in the back of a police car; school isn't a place where you have no rights at all. That is what a prison is, in case you did not know. Hell, even they have certain rights if allowed, like being allowed visitors, ect.

I have more, but you'd probably just try to prove wrong obvious facts being presented towards you, like I know you will with this example. So meh.

Also, I do not think you read my comment on PHM's quote, as it had nothing to do with writing about videogames. Good job.

You're seriously calling reporting assault a right?

Let me break it down for you.
You have no free speech or expression, they can search you and your belongings without cause or warrant, you have no right to assembly, you have no right to civil disobedience, you have no right to keep and bear arms, and you are not granted the right of due process.

Your constitutional rights are waived upon entering a public school.
Going to the office and complaining that someone punched you isn't a right.
I sure as hell don't see "reporting crimes" in the bill of rights.

I was referring to all the issues Tuggernuts mentioned, not the videogames. If the newspaper was given to the parents then they could solve problems they had, for example teachers failing students they don't like and the issues with Special Ed.

That all is really subjective, depending on how much trust people put in their teenagers to adequately assess the situation regarding their highschool.  Which I can tell you, is not likely to happen.

Also, I do not think you read my comment on PHM's quote, as it had nothing to do with writing about videogames. Good job.

I was replying to PHM, not you.
That's why he was quoted.
Not you.

Good job.

First of all, you're correct. It's not a right. I am sleep deprived, and my mind works awful that way, and I go about typing things that do not make sense. Who gives a fuck? Because I sure do not.

Second, I never said you replied to me. I was adding my thoughts on what he said, and directed towards you. Why? Because I can. Good job noticing the incredibly obvious.

Also, what I cannot even contemplate is you had to be the one to try and make an argument out of my original post. Of course, there are points I bring up that are not valid, I know. But you bring up a lot of invalid points too, and are hellbent on trying to prove them right, when it is just impossible. At least I was able to admit my mistakes.

To be honest, I do not even give a fuck what you think. You're just acting like a major douche.

G_G

Ooooh >:3 The argument is getting quite interesting. Each school, if you will, has its own rules and rights. Now I guess you wouldn't call it rights.  But something along those lines. I guess restrictions would be the word.

You don't have the freedom of speech. Why? Government property. You can say what you want but it of course comes with consequences. I really don't think you have rights in school. Now you can freely speak but to how far you can go is restricted by the schools rules. Cussing for example, I lived in Gillette with my grandma for a bit and the school there jumps on you if you cuss, say something sexual, or anything along those lines. Most likely get detention for it.

Now in my school I go to now, nobody except the administrative office cares if you cuss or not. South Dakota is a very poor state and school funding is low. Which leads to people not putting effort into rules or restrictions. Thats just how I think of it. My digital video teacher for example. Doesn't do shit. Gives us the assignment, tells us what to do and somewhat tells us how. Then he goes over to his desk and sits and plays on his computer all day. Gillette, Wyoming is pretty rich. Quite a few coal mines are in the area so they have money for their school. They have a full time nurse, teachers who are willing to teach and willing to do their job to help the students.

Now its kind of ironic that Gillette would get at you for the smallest inappropriate things but has 80% sites unblocked. Including the popular ones, youtube, google images, facebook, twitter, etc. where all of those sites listed are blocked here where they don't give a shit about what we say or where. There are restrictions but they are small ones. Its so stupid. I agree with Branden that they need to stop putting so much funding into proms, dances, and other things amongst the sort. They need to be putting that money into the music and art departments which are complete shit. They need to pay our teachers more and they need to hire a full time nurse. What we have are two nurses who go between all of our schools. Somedays nurse won't even be at the school.

Now I'm not sure if what I said is on topic but theres my rant.

You're acting like the school and the teacher owes you something, like you deserve to be able to write about whatever you want, I'm telling you that you don't.

But I mean, you don't give a fuck about making sense, right?
Good luck in school, or in life for that matter, with that attitude.

Have fun being an ignorant teen while you can, life's going to knock you on your ass if you don't grow up soon.
Step 1 - when you make a mistake, own up to it instead of saying that the mistake doesn't matter because you don't give a fuck.
Shit don't work that way boy.

This I can agree with.
Those are important things that are neglected because they don't show up on the SAT or whatever.
It's been proven that liberal arts help, but schools are more concerned with standardized testing results than anything.

We had the same issue at our school.

Parents complained, but the sports kids got all the money anyway.

I was acting like that? How funny, because I didn't.

Lol, I made plenty of it. Although, there were some flaws.

Thanks. I am doing really well in school, and my life.

School sucked, so I quit. So did alot of my friends. Sadly the that's only consequence that really made sense, because changing things is as impossible here as it is over where you live. Basically, to change the things that make no sense at all (you can get rid of almost any subject, EXCEPT sports. What the hell?), we had to not only change the laws of our state, but of germany as a whole, too, since it enforces some of the school system.
But still, it's funny to see that I will be more successful in one year without a real school graduation than any people who finish school will be in many.

Still, the fact is I did own up to my mistakes in this thread. Wanna go back some posts and look? Or are you too fucking lazy?
