Welcome! / Hello Old Friends
July 03, 2015, 01:22:24 am
Hello everyone. I thought I'd stop by for a bit and check to see if this place was still around. It's nice seeing names that I used to recognize so well :)

My name is Diokatsu obviously but you can all call me Neale now. I used to be a fairly prolific poster (still top 10!). I've been studying game design at RPI, a school in America, for four years and now am looking to do game design professionally.

If any of you would like to talk or connect for the future, feel free to add me on Facebook or Twitter. If you don't use either of those my email is just Diokatsu(.)@gmail.com (remove the period and parentheses) or add me on Skype by searching Diokatsu. My name is "g" (don't ask).

I hope everything has been going well for everyone. Thank you.

Get the one's for Pad aka RED

You wanna do different keys? Go to options and key mapping or whateva, it's in there. Arrow order is Left, Down, Up, Right. My keys are S, D, L, ;. You can change the theme in appearance.

You wanna make it go faster? Press start after you select a song, aka press start twice, and change the speed from 1x to whateva. If it's got an X there it's an X mod and will change speed if the file changes speeds, aka slow down with the song if the chart does. If it's got a C it's gonna stay the same speed all the time (this is the best). Something in the C200 range is cool but find what you like. even 1x is cool. You can change the noteskin from here too, you'll see it.

While this might not be of any relevance to anyone on here, it's something I was impressed with. My friend wrote it in response, I would assume, to one of my Facebook statuses and the ensuing comments. It's really a wonderful piece of work.

Video Games and Value
by Danny Tran

I am no mathematician. By no means do I claim to be. I am in fact, horrible at math. However, I don't know how many times I have been ridiculed or chastised for being a gamer, and supporting the video gaming industry by spilling my money into purchasing games. Before anybody asks, yes:

I know you can download games.

I like to own legitimate copies of games I like (in a show of good faith to the developers and the industry itself). Nothing is quite like owning a real copy. Sure, it's just a piece of plastic etched into billions of notches by a laser. It's legitimate though. Made by the company itself, sold straight through an outlet to the end consumer: me. I've pirated things before, naturally. It's the only way to get some games these days anyway, but that is contrary to the point of this note.

The premise is simple. I take a popular form of entertainment. I then take the amount of money it takes to access said entertainment, and look at how long one is subjected to it for. My favourite benchmark is a movie ticket. I'll start with that.

At the local theatre, a movie ticket is $9.32CAD after taxes. I'll assume the average runtime is 120 minutes. An hour of entertainment therefore costs $4.66CAD. This is the base "entertainment value," as purely as I can assume it is excluding subjective measures such as whether you liked the movie or not.

A new copy of a video game is generally $59.99CAD, $67.79CAD after taxes. For a new release to be more cost efficient than a movie, it must run longer than 14.5 hours. The standard minimum competion time for a single-player game is 20 hours ($3.38CAD/hr). Usual completion times range from 40 to 60 ($1.65CAD/hr - $1.13CAD/hr) hours, meaning on average a new release is already more cost efficient than seeing a movie on average.

I pirated TES4:Oblivion (to my shame), but when I got it it was retailing for $39.99CAD, which would be $45.19CAD. A single playthrough netted me 140 hours of game time, meaning I would have paid for 32 cents/hr had I bought it. Phenomenal game; I'd play it again. Where else will you get entertainment that immersive for that price? Never mind the hundreds of mods you could get for the game to extend your playtime further.

That's not to say there aren't games that are short and not cost efficient. However for the most part they are, and I'm sick of people telling me that I should spend my money going out to see movies, going for lunch/dinner, shopping for clothes, whatever.

I could go on to compare and endless list of items vs. video games, how multiplayer prolongs the lifespan of any given game, revisiting and replaying a game, etc. etc. but I'm sure this illustrates my point well. Massively multiplayer games are another story of their own which I won't even try to get into.

Video games are, for me, one of the most cost effective forms of self-entertainment next to sitting around doing nothing or riding a bike.

So I was on /u/'s archives, don't ask, the other day and I stumbled upon an epic thread for a choose your own adventure game. I figured, why no try it on some forum and this is the only place I care to try it. So, faggots, let's lay down some rules:

1. The first post gets priority. If the first post is a joke or a troll, next poster gets priority. If your post is dumb or some gay shit like that, you won't get picked.

2. Your post should consist of some simple direction, no narration, no speech, no anything. An example would be, "Go up to the girl and talk to her."

3. If you get chosen as the flow-maker, aka your post is chosen to lead the story, you can't make another post for a while. Use discretion.

4. If someone else posts before you, delete your post, unless you can see how blatantly stupid and idiotic the previous post was. As such, only one person should be posting in between my narratives.

Ok, so if you want in, you can post anytime. No sign ups.

So here's the first in my series of CYOA Games:

Captain Pimp is your name, lovin' is your game. You seek to get it on (read: get some) with all the female residents of your ship. In order to do this, you'll need to judge the priority that each girl demands and how quickly rumor will spread if you do it with specific women. Make choices carefully.

Rules for this round:

Aqua: Can't we choose men as well? D:
Me: Fuck you no Captain Pimp ain't no homo.

Ulta: How much can we specify our choice?
Me: Shit bro just try it and I'll tell you if it's too specific or too broad or some shit.

CaitSith: Can I-?
Me: Fuck you no.

Your first choice is between 3 of the 5 girls on the ship. In your sight you have a small, cute and spunky girl who's not afraid to get a laugh out of anyone willing to listen. She's got bubblegum pink hair that she keeps hiked up in a ponytail, a plaid short skirt and a forest green tube top on. Another girl is a cripple, but your know she's very beautiful under all the bandages. You know that she's just in a temporary situation and her injuries will heal in time off the ship. She's got long dark hair with brilliantly blue eyes. The last girl is a mature women, who's been down on her luck gambling on the ship's casino. She's a bit downtrodden and in need of a good pick me up. She's got large breasts, a fun personality and an aptitude for drinking in long spells.

Who do you choose, or do you choose to wait until later?

This is really small, but can we have auto-resized avatars? I mean, I have having to cut the avatars I make exactly to the size CP allows. It would be easier for me if the forum just resized everything to the p[roper dimensions. If you can't then that's fine, but I just kinda thought about that. Thanks.

Anyone else have a strange hankering for either a game that has yet to be ported to your favorite consol or wants to see a sequel be produced to a game you've loved? My list goes as follows:

1. Steins;Gate - the second collab between Nitroplus and 5pb. looks really nice, but won't be coming out for PC until July 30 in Japan, meaning the translation patch won't be out until at least until late next year. It looks really nice with the interesting art style and Nitroplus' gift for fucked up stories like Saya no Uta. Chaos;Head was a real interesting story that failed to grip me because of it's art style, which I'm now getting over, but Stein'sGate seems way too promising.

2. The Elder Scrolls V - Everyone has at least heard of Oblivion and I've been a fan of Bethesda's Elder Scrolls series since Morrowind. I'm looking forward to this game regardless of what it turns out to be. With a game like Fallout 3 showing their diversity in development prowess, they're definitely the team I look for when it comes to surprises within consistent quality.

3. Batman: Arkham Asylum 2 - Jesus Christ, what wasn't amazing about this game? The developer, Rocksteady Studios, came out of fucking nowhere to produce a game made of gold. This could be one of the best sequels ever and a possible Game of the Year.

3. Assassin's Creed 3 - The second one was amazing and the next one has a lot to live up to, but I've got my eyes on this game for it's sheer potential. Another candidate for a future Game of the Year award.

4. Deardrops - I love Overdrive for their fusion of fun and lighthearted stories with love, drama and all around classy storytelling. Deardrops is going to follow in the same trend as Kire*Kire, which is good because with K-On!! airing now, people will be ready to accept this exceptional studio's take on forming a rock band.

I'll leave it at that so you all can tell me  about the games you want to see.

This Same Flower

If anything at all, life was bearable and sweet for me, like the nectar of some uncherished fruit that would have rotted had I not tasted it. It seemed all around me people lie in stasis, awaiting something and whatever it was, it was enough to commandeer their attention so much so that they gave up on the wellspring of life. For some reason, I never found anything better to do than life in the moment, living each day to each day without a future to hope for. I lived among my past, my ancestors and their hidden stories of triumph and loss, while living whatever I could out of each moment. I'd mature as it came and I'd play as the time required. There wasn't an agenda to follow. I was whimsical. But this was before the nations of this world went to war.

Like impious gods, the 3 warlords broke apart the entire world by their word. It shattered unceremoniously and fragments of each separate peace embedded themselves in the few who now wish for the days of old. I'm one of those people. Whoever you are, whoever I am, whoever they might be, we all have a purpose, a journey and wish and want, desire and passion, culminating in our life. So in this world of broke and fractured peace, where do you stand? This world holds no morality, we know no god and serve no lord anymore. Forge your own path among whatever you can find to build yourself from. Our past is what we make of the present now. Good luck. We'll all need it.

This is an entirely open-ended RPG. I've made no storyline, only a world for you to be involved in, to do whatever in, to be whoever you want to. So choose anyone, any race, any class and see where you'll stand. The story is fluid, the story is active and I'm never going to tell anyone what to do. You're free to interact with whomever you care to, to try for whatever you want to and to align with whatever side you wish to. So here we go.

Latium: The formerly most wealthy of the three kingdoms and was most likely to win the war, had it not been broken apart by it's generals. Now in turmoil, most of the cities within are left in ruin and it's wealth depleted. If you want to survive, you'll have to join the army it would seem, though Latium has a long history of producing amazing raiders.

Illium: A new and upcoming kingdom that's done the best in remaining unified. It has a passion for the arts and high-class culture and boasts huge military advancements for some unknown reason.

Knossos: An old military hungry empire with a thirst for bitter and vile powers. It's a magical stronghold that for some reason, despite it's history, has not advanced to attack anyone since the outbreak and remains unified if only in name. It's said that their is a huge civil war inside the borders, but no one has been able to confirm the scope of it.

I'm going to make a map soon, but you can pick out characters and locations now. If you want a race other than humans, you'll have to fill out a sheet for them.

So, I heard you want to make cool looking images in Photoshop. While I can't promise you expertise or even that you'll be the next Nobel Prize of Art Recipient, I can show you some tips that I use to make my own artwork. Let's get started.

I like anime, so why not make a background based off a cool song I like, let's say the song Sora Iro Days from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. I love Yoko and Nia, so let's search for an image of them. I found this:

Warning big:
Spoiler: ShowHide

You want as high a resolution as possible, to work with. Normal backgrounds are 1024x768 so try and find images that are bigger than this, though resizing is acceptable. It's just nice to have as much potential image use as possible.

Let's get started. First thing is first, think about what you want to make. Do you want it shiny and colorful or dark and grungy? Once you figure out what you want, then comes the next step, opening Photoshop. Open whatever Photoshop you have and make a new document with the 1024x768 preset.

Now it's time to arrange the document. Put the picture inside the Photoshop window by dragging it, then drag it into the open canvas you created. You'll notice it's much bigger than the canvas, which can be solved easily. Press Ctrl+T to use the transform tool and hold shift while dragging in the corner to keep the aspect ratio the same. You might get something like this:

Spoiler: ShowHide

Ok, now it's time to build up what artists call stock photos. These are anything, from CGs to screenshots, to nature photos, to C4Ds, fractals, ect. This is something i can't really help you with, but search around for things that remind you of your initial theme. I like using C4Ds and CGs so I'll be trying those out. first though, let's make our image look prettier. Duplicate the layer by right clicking the layer and pressing duplicate, or select the layer and press Crtl+J. you now have two layers of the same image. Set the top one to the layer blending to Overlay. Then set that top layer to Gaussian Blur 3px. The order which you do those two steps actually doesn't matter. Here are some screens for the visual learners:

Spoiler: ShowHide

Spoiler: ShowHide

Now select the bottom image copy and press Ctrl+Shift+U. This will desaturate it. This will seem useless now, but later on it will be important. Next find a cool C4D or stock image to use. I'll be using this:

Spoiler: ShowHide

Arrange this however you want and add a layer mask. You'll find that below the layers, the gray box with a white circle inside. Next select the gradient tool with black as your foreground color. If you go into the gradient presets you'll find a black to transparent option. Select it and then use this to get rid of the rough edges of the stock. This will make it fade in also. Duplicate, change to overlay, Gaussian blur and desaturate both or just the bottom image. Note, you can experiment with the layer blending. In my example I'm using overlay for the top and screen for the bottom:

Spoiler: ShowHide

Now try doing the same thing for the bottom, desaturated image of the Yoko Nia pic, but make it fade away from the girls. You should see white. Now take some more stock images and fill the background right above that white layer. I'll just be using the first and one other to do this, but I'll be duplicating it to fill in space:

Spoiler: ShowHide

When you fill in the space, experiment with blending layers and then merge the entire background by Shift+Clicking the images between the Yoko and Nia and the white then right clicking and selecting merge:

Spoiler: ShowHide

Here is the final image for all you:

Spoiler: ShowHide

Be ready for the some more of the tutorial soon. Comment on what I have and ask any questions. I take requests too!

PS: Yeah, that's Bible Black the game.

Brimming White

Symphonic rain rebounds off the umbrellas of the procession -- minor scale -- accompanied by the percussion of footsteps and the mournful voice of the priest as he sings his false praise to a fake god; and all of it's a lie. It's a funeral dirge without substance, because they never knew her, the real her, enough to write a composition she'd believe in. She didn't believe in a heaven or a hell, and to be honest I don't blame her. People are so hopelessly wound up in their own affairs they couldn't bother to take the time to get to know a girl they supposedly cared about. Because that's who's here, right? The people who cared about her? Wrong. It's because the people have an obligation, lest they look like faithless friends or neglectful parents. This entire orchestra is out of tune, an epitaph for a girl that never was. But then, the first movement ends, the crowds disperse, and I stand back a bit. The street is barren as the sky was colorless, empty and devoid. It's comforting, because looking back now she never had anything beautiful in her life except herself. I can't justify enjoying my time.
I don't blame myself really, not even after her death. The relationship felt abusive, but she treated me the way she wanted to treat me, and I was happy when she was happy. But, it really didn't work too well being so different. Sometimes she'd slap me if I came to her house when her parents were home, and she'd send me away, not to come back for the rest of the week. Whenever I'd walk away I'd find myself listening hard for a parent to call me back, saying "Oh, I'm so sorry. She's been in a mood ever since 'insert day here' because she 'insert something stupid and funny she did' and she's quite embarrassed." Then I'd get let in the house and see her crying with her head draped over some old, rusted coffee table, and she'd come over and hug me, and I'd confess and we'd kiss and she'd confess back and we'd go out and get married and then, finally, I could get her away from all her families troubles; my thoughts were the usual imaginary cadenza mid-concerto that I only wish I knew how to play. But I'd never get any of that dream. The house remained silent as ever. That is, it remained silent until a certain point.

The first time I met her was about three weeks into the new school year. I never really cared much about girls, but I did enjoy looking at the beautiful ones, paging though imagined relationships and such. But she was special. Really special. Gorgeous, seraphic, like Helen of Troy only better looking and not as much of a hell-raiser. She had long black hair with some brown highlights. She was skinny and tall, but not so much as to dwarf me, and her figure was graceful and well-composed, a rose-like body that threatened to be crushed by the world around it raging with malevolent dis-chord. I only knew she wanted to be a guidance counselor, so she was taking the same Psych class as me, but already I wanted to be the music box on which she played out her guiding tune. It seemed too beautiful to me; the prospect of being with a beautiful and thoughtful woman was enticing. The sound of truth was a bit sharper, cacophonous, and grated the ears.

If only her personality were like her body, then I might have been able to confess. She was bitter and she was strong, which made her about as appealing and accessible as caviar; she was a delicacy in her own right, but you needed the taste of Polyphemos in order to enjoy her. But I stayed with her and kept her in my eyes for one reason: she never once, in all our time together, told me anything about her, showed me any side of her or even gave me reason to think that she were anything but hopeful. Looking into her eyes, you never saw the barren world she came from, neither the drunkard father nor the abused mother, but you saw her eyes, brimming not with tears, but with hope. She'd always be looking into the sky, looking for clouds. She liked the white puffy forms against an infinite sky. That was her future, I thought, but what happened was far beyond my imagination.
They called it suicide. Her death, that is. I was there, but they knew I hadn't had anything to do with it. The gun, her father's, was in her hand. The angle, they told my parents, was only possible if she had been her own killer. I don't believe them at all. I didn't kill her, but I wish I had been blamed. No, I wish I had killed her, because from day one I never had any control over our relationship. That would have been the final resolution of my heart, the only progress I would have made in changing her life. In order to write myself into her life, I'd have killed her, if only she had let me. But no, muzzle to her head, she smiled at me and for the first time she cried. But, before it all happened, she looked up one last time into the sky and then at me as if to tell me something. She could have said it. It wouldn't have taken too long. But I still don't know what she meant. The harmony of the situation frightened me, preplanned like it was directed by some ghostly conductor. But it ended the same as any other death, I suppose.

I go home. I go home to a house that will never hold me again. The funeral has ended. Two hours ago. I can't feel my legs; the rain has made them numb. Someone, I can't remember who, had carried me to the car. It hurts. Love and life seems to be too much. Looking back though, would she be happy if I just gave up here? Didn't she give up too? But, was I stronger than her? I can't tell, but the tears I cried back then seem to have dried up. I don't think it would be right, in memory of her, to cry anymore. As if to support me, the sky doesn't seem to be crying anymore either. Its piece is concluded, the final requiem has been played, and the clouds now begin to disperse. The sky is quite a wonderful view. I see it now. An infinite expanse, full of beacons of hope, puffs of happiness on a great beyond. Maybe this, then, is something to look forward into. This azure, this giant blue, a great sad melody, but when it all comes down to pass, it's brimming white.

Welcome! / Hi! [Sample Introduction]
February 24, 2010, 08:03:14 pm
Hi everyone, I'm Diokatsu and you might not know me so I'll introduce myself! I'm only here for your entertainment and I won't be told otherwise! I'm the forum spammer, intertard and rhythm game addict (along with Starrodkirby86 ;)) and I hope you enjoy my presence.

Now, I'm very interested in three things: video games, anime, and music. Some of my favorite games are Legend of Zelda: LttP, Final Fantasy IV, Chrono Trigger, Sonic Spinball, Super Smash Bros. 64, Morrowind, Fire Emblem (series), Super Smash Bros. Melee, Modern Warfare 1+2, Cave Story, Oblivion, Bioshock, Mirror's Edge, Uncharted 1+2, , and Batman Arkham Asylum. I'm a big fan also of visual novels such as Kagetsu Tohya, Planetarian, and Fate/Stay Night as well as my favorite game series of all time: Touhou, a Japanese indy-SHMUP. I'm a big, big, big Stepmania player and here's a video to take a peek at:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YerhpN_PUsE

Anime might be the area where I differ from a lot of mainstream opinions. I dislike Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Death Note and DBZ to name a few, though I have watched all of those and most of them I had been a fan of at one time. Some anime I do like however, are the following: H2O: Footprints in the Sand, Bakemonogatari, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, Eureka 7, Chaos;Head, Bible Black, Saki, Koi Kaze, Now and Then, Here and There, Shuffle!, and Kamisama Kazoku to name a small group. I like talking about anime, but i do hope I'm not obsessive and I haven't started many (or perhaps any) anime related threads. Don't think of me as a typical weeaboo ;)

And lastly, I like music. I'll cut to the chase: Motoi Sakuraba, Yatsunori Mitsuda, Rei Kondoh, Aya Hirano, supercell, Girls' Generation, Wonder Girls, Big Bang, Spy47, kors k, L.E.D, Dream Theater, Arch Enemy, All That Remains, As I Lay Dying, August Burns Red, Aphex Twin, Venetian Snares, Squarepusher, Mu-Ziq, Iron Attack!, Crow's Claw, Dark Phoenix, Kommisar, Virt and ZUN. However, this is actually a really small list. Ask me if I like an artist and I'll probably have an opinion on them.

So that's a bit about me. Ask me questions about myself, my interests or just welcome me in general! Thanks everyone!

Video games sure have awesome music, yep yep. And not just battle themes either, am I right? Post musics here from video games that you liked. I'm sure everyone will enjoy the song and if they're intrigued enough might even play the game! Remember that remixes are accepted and encouraged!

A touching song from the visual novel Narcissu. It's a work safe game and terribly sad too. It will break your heart just like this song makes it's listeners feel a solemn and serene clam.

A remix of a Touhou song by dBu. Out of all the rock remixes this has to be one of my favorites! It's just too fast and aggressive for me to ignore! It's a remix of an earlier Touhou album song that came out on the PC-98 and not Windows so you might have trouble playing it :p

From the most beloved visual novel of all time, Fate/Stay Night. Definitely an interesting song and captures the atmosphere of the great Gilgamesh. It's a bit strange so some might not appreciate it's strange progression.

An amazing Chrono Trigger remix by Abadoss. Absolutely stunning if you played the original. You'll be able to recognize a lot of different tracks in there. It's almsot like a mix of the entire soundtrack but it has some amazing elements of originality if you care to listen all the way through. It's very serene.

So that's my contribution! I hope I can get some more people to share their favorite tracks and remixes!

I try and do a lot of different styles but I usually end up with ultra-saturated and poppy images with high contrast between light and dark. If you liek how I make stuff then jsut ask and I'll get to it when I have time.
