Would you mind posting some details about the project? I'm curious to hear what engine you're using, and if it's RMXP, to hear what online script you are using (is it RMX-OS, or maybe something custom?)

Whatever the case, good luck with your project. Pokemon online projects are ambitious goals, but as we saw from Aegisrox, another user here on the forum, they can still be accomplished and quite successful. :)

Tutorials / Re: [XP]Enhancing the Default Battle System

This is a great tutorial. I've always actually liked the default battle system quite a bit, myself, so this has some great ideas on how to put it to its full potential.

@winkio: That's a good idea; I'll give that a try and let you know the results.
@Blizz: I'm actually not using Visual Studio - I'm just using a regular text editor and the command line. Maybe that's why I'm struggling so much. Haha. Maybe I'll install Visual Studio to give your suggestion a try and see if that helps track down the root of the problem.

Is it at all possible that you have left an old line of code somewhere? I might be missing something dumb, but I don't see where this error could come from if there is an element in the appropriate slot :o

It's definitely possible; I've been trying to get this to work all weekend, so it has all sorts of weird stuff in it by now. Haha. There isn't any extra code in this particular method that should affect this vector, however; the code that I posted of where the error appears is copy and pasted straight from the file. I also know that it isn't something after this, as if I put a print statement right after the last line I posted, it never gets reached. It's really weird....

Academics / Awful stupid C++ Error
November 17, 2014, 12:43:32 am
So, in the spirit of full disclosure, this is actually part of a project that I have to do for a class for school. However, I'm hoping that someone with a little more C++ experience than I might be able to help me, because I've gotten pretty stuck.

Essentially, I have a vector, which I'm passing by reference to another object, which is supposed to print out part of the vector. Even when I just try to print the first element in the vector, however, if gives me a "std::out_of_range" error. But when I check the size of the vector right before that, it correctly returns that the size of the vector is two, so there must be an element in the 0th position, right? This code:

if (attributeList.empty()){
out << "Empty!" << endl;
} else {
out << "Not empty!" << endl;
out << "Vector size: " << attributeList.size() << endl;
out << attributeList.at(0) << endl;
}

prints out:

Not empty!
Vector size: 2
A

"A" is the element contained in the 0th slot of the vector, and it is correctly printing out, so why is it throwing an error here?

This isn't really urgent, but it certainly has me pretty baffled. Can anyone think of why this might be happening?

General Discussion / Re: Music during Instalation
November 11, 2014, 04:09:11 pm
I don't know if I would like music during installation of things, because I usually start the install and then do something else while it finishes. It's an interesting idea, though; I don't know if I've come across any installers that use music.

I downloaded a copy of the game on PC to give it a try, and it was alright, but it wasn't anything fantastic. I might pick it up if the price drops to below $5 or so, but I think I'll probably give it a pass in the meantime. The gameplay seems to essentially boil down to whether or not you get lucky and find good upgrades. If you do, you can beat the game in an hour, and if you don't, you die and have to keep restarting until you do. (This is pretty typical in rogue-likes, of course, so it's really more that it's not a genre I really enjoy as opposed to it being a poorly designed game.)
The gameplay isn't bad; it's like a twin-stick shooter, kind of. It actually reminds me a lot of Super Smash TV for the SNES (that probably doesn't mean much to anyone, but my brother and I played that game a lot back in the day. Haha.) It's probably worth a download if you have PS+, or if you want to do local coop with someone.
So, I guess that's sort of my mini review. Haha. :P

Has anyone played it? It just came out on the Vita and looks pretty interesting; I'm impressed that they managed to take such a simple art style and action-based gameplay and still create an unnerving atmosphere. Of course, it is a rogue-like at the core, which typically isn't really a genre that I enjoy too much as I don't really like the feeling of losing all my progress every time I die.

If you're emulating, why aren't you using save states? xD

Whatever terrible emulator I was using probably didn't support save states. It was one of those super awful multi-platform emulators that have about ten half-baked emulation cores instead of one decent one. :P Wasn't 2001 technology great? Haha. XD

Removable batteries are always a major plus for me, though really only for the peace of mind. I always dislike thinking of my devices as being so very ephemeral since I love them all so much. Haha. :P
With that said, I think I've only ever once actually replaced the battery in a handheld device because it no longer held a charge, and for those who don't keep their old devices once they are eligible for a new one, I can see how this wouldn't be much of a concern.

Another plus of removable batteries is being able to bring an extra on a long trip, which is actually something that I've made use of in the past. USB plugs are so frequent, though, that this probably isn't as much of an issue as it was back in the day; I will always have memories of car trips in the back of my parents' van, squeezed between my siblings and desperately hoping that my iPaq will maintain its charge long enough for me to reach a save point in Chrono Trigger being emulated at around 60% speed (with a frame skip of three and the sound turned off to speed it up.)

G_G, I don't usually ask for keys, but if you're sure that you don't want it, could I try Really Big Sky? If there's someone else who wants this one, though, that's okay. They can have it. I just think it looks kind of fun.

I have an Asus Vivotab that I use for school, and I love it - it's an 8 inch Windows tablet with a Wacom digitalizer. After reading this, I hope it doesn't fail on me....

A lot of people scoff at gaming laptops due to not being as powerful as equivalently priced desktops, but I had an M17x for a long time and loved it. :) In my opinion, the extra portability was worth having to drop the graphics settings on a couple of things down a notch.

General Discussion / Re: RMVX graphics pack in rmxp?
October 25, 2014, 10:48:15 pm
I would imagine that the license extends to use in all RPG Maker games, particularly if it is purchased separately and not as part of the standard RTP for an RMXP program. If you ever want to actually release something, however, you might want to get a lawyer, or at least someone with a decent history of legal experience, to look over the terms and conditions in order to verify that it is within your rights. You'd probably want to talk with such a person if you're going to release anything commercially anyway, in order to assure that your work is properly protected and so on. :)

Video Games / Re: Hatred

I've never really found much interest in games like GTA, Saints Row, Watch_Dogs, and others that fit into such a genre. As such, I don't feel like I'm in a position where I can really say much about this game; it's a lot easier to find fault in a game when it's not the type of game that you would ever play in the first place based simply on the style of core game play, to say nothing of the other elements of the game.

As far as the trailer itself is concerned, I find myself agreeing with KK20 that the trailer doesn't seem to be very clear who it is targeting. From the elements that are presented and the clips of gameplay, it seems to be somewhere along the lines of a GTA-type game, but it could be something else. So, it's not really focusing on the gameplay. It could, then, be story based, but it also doesn't present much of a premise for a story outside of acts of graphic violence. As winkio said, violence is a spice that exists in media and is integral to a number of genres of story-telling in any form, but, in my opinion, it by itself cannot be the foundation of a story. So, the trailer isn't about the story. I guess really the only thing the trailer appears to be trying to sell, as far as I can tell, is the "atmosphere" of the game. It is at this point that, again, I find myself being far enough outside of the targeted audience that I'm unable to comment whether this is a "good" or "bad" game, aside from the fact that it doesn't look like something I would play.

At the very least, I do think it is unfortunate that, whether or not the game is good, it provides ammunition to those who villainize gaming as a hobby.
