Title: The Official Phantasy Star Online Thread!

Stealing Rose's idea, I have created a thread to discuss the possibility of a group of CP regulars playing Phantasy Star Online 2 together. How many of you would be willing to join and what time are you all available?

Chaos Project members on PSO2:

Chaos-Project IDPSO2 IDCharater NamePrimary Class

How to Get the Game:

PSO2 Tweaker Tool (http://arks-layer.com/index.php)

There are 2 options:

The first is to download the English installer via torrent, this may or may not have decent speed for you
http://arks-layer.com/setup.php

The second option is to use the tweaker tool to down load and install the game for you, be warned the window is known to break during the process and it it a 15GB Download so if you want to be sure it's still working you will need to use a resource monitor to see the exe working and watch it's download speed but you will have no indication of progress. when it done it will open a new window to inform you it's finished.

after installing the game you will need to use the tweaker to install the English patches, there are 3.
The first 2 (the English language patch and the English large files patch can be downloaded an installed via the tweaker. there is an option in the tweaker's orb menu to install patches)
the 3ed is the story patch and must be downloaded manually. the option in the tweaker's menu will give you a link. The patch is a ~2GB file that you download from mega and then install by selecting the file when prompted by the tweaker during patch install.

before installing any patches use the "Check for PSO2 updates" option form the tweaker's orb menu to bring the game up to date. it is of note that the patches will need to be reinstalled after every game update

Signing Up:

this is actually a bit of a pain as it requires traversing a Japanese site and passing a Japanese captcha.
good thing there is a nice guide written up for this purpose
http://arks-layer.com/signup.php
if you have any trouble with the captcha this thread on the PSO2 Forums can help (it helped me, identifying those characters is hard :P)
http://www.pso-world.com/forums/showthread.php?t=203925

Learning The Game:

Here is a page with lost of helpful guides
http://bumped.org/psublog/pso2-guide-list/

for the most part the game is very strait forward, learn how to attack, guard, and dodge form the tutorial and then get good at it.

One thing that may be confusing are the difference between Quests and "quests".
what the game calls quest most other games would call missions, instance like maps for you party to traverse and complete a goal

The game also has "Client Orders" that NPCs give out which are more like the traditional "quests" of an MMO/RPG. These client order can give out massive EXP and completing the orders from the Quest counter Admin can quickly get you from lv 2 to lv 12 and beyond (as in 5 hours tops). Be on the look out from Orders form NPC and they are by far the most effective way to LV.

The game also has a mechanic called ARCS Road. It's kinda like a story line that you complete by completing Missions and quests and talking to certain people, It too can grant exp as I gather. Pay attention and it should make sense.

Also of the stuff NPC's say has been left untranslated. rest assured it not all that important and your not missing any important info on how to play, not really anyway.

If you have any specific questions that arn't covered here or in any of the guides linked to feel free to ask.

I could join. I don't have bucketloads of free time, but I'm usually pretty available in the evenings and weekends. I'm not sure how much of the game has been translated, but I can read a fair bit of Japanese as well, in case I need to help translate some of the dialog or whatever so that people know what is going on. Of course, in this type of game, usually it's pretty playable as long as the HUD and central features have been translated, which sounds like it is already the case.

I think it'd be cool. It might even be funner if we could setup an official CP server.

I'm interested, but my time might be limited and I'd only be up to joing if we got a few people who want to play regularly

Well, we have four people now. The video showed a group of 4, so I would say we have at least enough to get it going. If it follows normal mmo tropes, I don't mind healing for the group.

Sign me in, I'm available for both PSO and PSO2, (I used to be a GM on the Ultima server, now retired but I still have some goods I can part if you join there)

as for groups of 4.... well it's a bit more complex than that, allow me to explain:

the game just as PSO1 is based on 4 player instances however it can escalate even higher....

Let's say Whiterose makes a room, (password included), and 3 players join that room, Whiterose's party by definition is full and the game
then creates an instance for up to 4 players, however the instance itself is divided into 2 types of areas:

SINGLE-PARTY AREAS

These areas are designed for 4 players max at the same time, some maps are straightforward, some are not, you can view storyline cutscenes here if you wish
or carry on, some SPECIAL events might occur if you have a full party of people at the same time, but once you move to the next area you MIGHT enter this new
place called....

MULTI-PARTY AREAS

These areas are considerably bigger than single-party areas, and can hold 12 players at the same time, a party itself has room for 4 people, but these areas allow
up to 3 full parties to wander around, so basically even if you put a password on your party, you CAN (not always) bump into another group here,
so for example if I want to join Whiterose's party but it's full I can still join her created instance as a second party, we can STILL meet in MP-Areas.

I'll downright say this now..... MP-AREAS are FUN and DANGEROUS XD

you see when you create your instance, you'll select a quest you want to complete, however as you wander through the map, some (randomly selected) events might
trigger... for example... a ship crashes on the ground and you have to protect it for 2 minutes, or in the worst case a BOSS itself is loose on the map
(this is where I believe the game turns into Monster Hunter XD)
MP-AREAS are random. in a nutshell, you never play the same map twice, each time is a different place (save for story missions)

also....

every now and then, the server itself will give you a global announcement all over the game, when this happens it means an [Emergency Quest] is about to begin
EQ's only happen about 4-5 times per day, and give you extra EXP and money (plus rare items), they are meant to be taken by 12 players simultaneously and
by all means could be considered as the game's raids.

here's an example emergency quest:

Yeah, I think so. That's what I'm doing, anyway. I've read that there is a way to download all of the patches in advance and that it's way faster, but it's unfortunately through a torrent, and my college ISP hates torrents with a fiery burning passion. (If I start a torrent download, my internet will go haywire for a week, even if I stop the download. It only happens with torrents, too, so I know it's intentional. Stupid ISP.) Here's a link to the torrent if you want to give it a try:

http://arks-layer.com/

From what I've read about the game so far, it looks like all of the roles are essentially damage dealing roles. (Different classes are just different ways of doing damage; no tanks or healers like some other MMOs.) I'm a little wary that this will take a lot of the teamwork out of things, but I guess it also frees up everyone to be able to play whatever class they want to be without having to worry about coordinating with others. So far, I'm thinking that I want to be a Force. Maybe a ranger, but I'm not sure. I also read that Hunters always do the most damage, though, so I guess that makes them the best for anyone who wants to really meta-game things. Hmm... Choices choices....

I'm a level 20 Braver, so I can help out people who want to try this game out, (kinda confusing at first even with the patch)
you might however before attempting to login keep this in mind:

since it's a JP server, most of the english speaking community is located on [Ship 02 Ur] under Block 20.
if you don't know anyone in PSO2, block 20 is a must.

also, yes there's 4 starting classes, but at lv 30 you unlock additional classes, as for healing per se.... anyone can heal as long as your class allows
you to wield weapons that work with magical skill rather than physical skill (such as the Force and Techter classes)

search me as Sesilou XD

Still downloading. I thought it was done, but I guess that the file the downloader downloaded was another downloader for the actual game. As I read more about it, it's looking like a lot of fun, but I do kind of find myself missing the "Holy Trinity" concept; I've always kind of liked the idea of each member of the group providing a vital yet separate role. I'm probably just worrying over nothing, though. Hopefully it will be done soon and then I can give it a shot.

How about a stipulation?
Title: Re: The Official Phantasy Star Online Thread!
Post by: R.A.V.S.O on February 07, 2014, 06:07:30 pm
Well your 3 (now 4) starting classes are:

Hunter: good for Front-DPS, they have tons of HP, (by PSO2 standards at least), good P.DEF and specialize on close-quarter combat. basically if you like
to beat the crap out of enemies from up close, this class is for you, the downside is, later magic-based enemies might give you a hard time.

Ranger: good for Ranged-DPS, they have good evasion and defense, and overall a bit more stable with M.DEF, these guys at first start out dealing rather weak
damage from afar, but as you level them up you can deal damage just as good as a hunter (with the right skills added) if you're the type of player that
likes to take down enemies from the rear, Ranger is for you, just watch out for bruiser enemies, some can one-hit-KO you if you're careless.

Force: good for Magic-DPS, although they have poor P.DEF their M.DEF is pretty good and can withstand magical attacks (which enemies later on have)
they start out slow, deal poor physical damage, but they have a vast assortment of magic skills, plus unlike any of the other starting classes they
have access to the healing magic "Resta" which (if you're a bad player in constant need to heal) saves you some money you would have wasted on
getting mates. (on the original PSO, SEGA pretty much made Forces near-obsolete, but on PSO2 they're just as viable and valid as a hunter or ranger,)

Braver: a jack of all trades, capable of dealing both front and ranged DPS while having an overall good P.DEF, the downside is you don't have that big of
a weapons selection as the other classes (only katana, bow and gunlash) this is both a good and a bad thing, why? the newly added "Katana" weapon
is actually quite good with the approriate skills (such as katana combat, and stances) AND is only usable by this class only
the Braver is a difficult class to play but if you master it you can easily deal just as much (or even more) damage than a Hunter,
(*hint* katana gear skill, GET THIS SKILL ASAP if you play as braver.)

each class has it's pros and cons but if you're skilled enough the game's enemies shouldn't be too tough regardless of who you choose,
btw if you're still new I'd suggest you avoid the Duman/Dewman race, the thing is Dewman have HIGH attack, but very LOW HP, meaning one hit
can leave you near death and most bosses can one-shot you, unless you know how to perfect-guard.

What kind of stipulation did you have in mind? I think it would be fun to work something out, but I definitely don't want people to feel pressured into follow arbitrary rules put in place just to keep WhiteRose happy. :P

lol
I'm not too familiar with the series myself, so I'm not exactly sure how well that would turn out. It would be something simple like "Only allowed to use supportive magic and never attack" or "If going one-handed, must have shield equipped and you must be the defender--Two handed, you must focus only on fighting, never supporting". Bringing in more traditional RPG class elements so to speak.

Also, I saw a video and it seems you can only make one character.
Title: Re: The Official Phantasy Star Online Thread!
Post by: R.A.V.S.O on February 07, 2014, 06:41:55 pm
well the game is free-to-play, but most of the good stuff (such as alternate costumes, additional player slots and services) are not available unless you spend
real money on it (arks cash, which is displayed in a red triangle icon)

arks cash related services are NOT required to clear the game, but they sure help you proceed smoothly, also you CAN get costumes without AK, it just costs
tons of in-game money,

the thing is, there are no shields in the game, because weapons (some not all) take care of shielding you,
the weapon you have equipped has a special action (called weapon action) that activates with the R key, some swords change into guns (like the gunlashes)
and some allow you to block enemy attacks (a shield indeed), if you block an attack just as the enemy was about to hit, you take 0 damage, and can counter
this is called "Just Guard" or "Perfect Block" and some classes (like the Braver) can deal insane amount of damage after doing a just guard.

afaik, you can use supportive magic as long as you have the right weapon, if you don't you can use an item called [Star Atomizer] to make an AoE heal
(regardless of class)

each class can support and attack freely, basically because all classes can heal, perfect block, and dodge (imagine KH's dodge roll, but less flashy)

I think that might be fun to try. And who knows? Maybe it will be more fun to have everyone do whatever they want to do. I played the original PSO a loooong time ago, and I remember that it was pretty much like that but I still enjoyed it. We can all just poke around with the game a bit and figure out what we think would be the most fun to do together. That's one of the best parts of being able to play with a group of people who know each other. Having a CP group was a good idea. :)

EDIT: If this download will ever finish, that is. I wish that torrents weren't so messed up; I'm sure that would be way faster. Maybe I'll try it anyway and see what happens. Haha.

oh well if you're using PSO2 Tweaker, make sure to check the "translate items" box from the orb menu,
basically other patches self-install (once you order them to) but item translation is done manually from the orb menu,

also save whatever EXP/rare-drop boost items you receive until higher difficulties, nothing special drops from normal during my time leveling.

the game (in order to avoid gameguard detecting the patch) uninstalls the english patch and then you gotta re-patch

Definitely go with the PSO2Tweaker method. It still takes a long time (I think the total was around 18GB,) but it goes a lot faster than the official way and doesn't crash as often. It also gives you a lot better view of the progress that it's making. It still takes a little while, though, so you might need to let it download overnight. Here's where you can download the tweaker:

By the way, mine FINALLY finished downloading. :D I'm making my character right now. I want to be a Force, but I haven't decided whether to be Human or Newman yet.

EDIT: There are so many customization options. D: I know that I'm going to be in this menu for hours....

Are there more outfits available later? Most of the starting ones are pretty good, but they're either really revealing or have tall heels.

No female is safe in fantasy Japanese games.

What's your character Ryex? I'll most likely choose something different from everyone else.
Also, I always make female characters in any game I play. Would you mind?

That makes two of us. Haha.

@KK20: I don't mind if you have a female character. Whatever you think would be fun to play. :)

I'm on Ship 2; my account name is WhiteRose16, and my character name is Akari. I'm not sure which you use to message, but message me once you have things figured out.

It was the same way with me. it tells you when it finishes though.
once it's done your going to want to close the tweaker and go run the games normal launch and let it update. then install the patches with the tweaker
I'm playing a braver. just seems to fit.

I sent you a request Rose, I figured it out you have to use that little booth with the twice circled ping question mark to search for people

Trying to follow the Kotaku guide (http://kotaku.com/5928484/cant-wait-for-phantasy-star-online-2-heres-how-to-play-the-japanese-version) in making my account. I'm registered, but now I can't "Give my account permission to play PSO2" on step 7. The button I clicked sent me to http://pso2.jp/players/

EDIT: Nvm found it

Now to sit and wait for the downloading/installation to finish.

Moments before joining forces with Ryex I managed to unlock the next area:
I took the liberty of taking some pics for your amusement,
apparently PSO2 maximizes the pic a lot so I'll just spoiler them to avoid unnecessary expansion.

Your standard winter wonderland! (hypothermia not included, thankfully)

And even the nauseatingly cute critters appear as well! awww..... so kawaii <3

Unfortunately Kawaii and Homicidal-Maniac don't mix so good as you can see....  so I proceed to harvest their oh so valuable items from their lifeless bodies.
Why?....  For the glory of Satan of course!

Afterwards I found Ryex and helped him out on his journey to become a badass braver XD
unfortunately I didn't take pics on that, sorry about that Ryex...

also sorry for the large images, the game scales them so yeah.... things get rather crazy later on XD

I really should be doing school stuff while I wait, but too tired to think straight. Worked at 7PM yesterday and didn't get in bed until just before 5AM. Had to go to school to do my other job at 10:30 ish. No naps today.

And it will probably finish by the time I need to go to bed for work tomorrow. Man... :\

every now and then the server throws emergency quests, although these do require people to play properly (a party of 4+)
they're great for exp grinding (save your EXP boosts and rare drop boosts for higher difficulties!)

the closest quest you can get which has easily 4+ bosses appearing on the map (killing 2 almost guarantees a levelup) is
the "Atrocious Ocean" quest, but you can only clear this quest a certain number of times.

I actually still haven't figured out how to get back into the game world to fight stuff after the tutorial. I know that in PSO1 you could just take the elevator down, but I haven't found the right elevator yet. Do you have to have a quest in order to go fight things?

well once you're in the terminal, in order to head back down you need to go to the quest counter and select an appropriate quest
once you accept it you can head back down to the campship (it looks like an entrance to a subway on the terminal)

later in-game once you have access to your first free-field exploration (unlocked by clearing certain quests) by simply going to
the campship you'll automatically start a free-field exploration.

Ya, I got her caught up on exp and we went to fight eh dragon boss int eh second area, with rose on Force with elemental damage and heals and me on braver with a katana we made short work of it. though it helped that I was able to combine the Katana gear and katana finish to crit for 3.4k in a single blow. R.A.V.S.O. you we NOT kidding when you said it was high damage.

you can triplicate it if your katana finish was activated during the katana gear duration + it was the first move you used after doing a perfect block,

yeah braver is basically an all or nothing class XD

You guys missed today's Emergency Quest XD it was AWESOME XD

Basically the mission was tower-defense, but with loads of players and mobs, (takes a bit of strain on the PC but worth it)

I started out on the right side, and got to man a turret.
Spoiler: ShowHide
(http://i59.tinypic.com/333ls1s.png)

Eventually the turret jams and now along with another 11 members, you gotta defend the base on foot, it gets crazier as you
clear more rounds.
Spoiler: ShowHide
(http://i57.tinypic.com/291hq2q.png)

Then at the final round, this huge enemy starts coming in, (at this point your bases *might* be so damaged up that if he reaches them it's all over)
on the bright side you get to deploy another turret for good measure.
Spoiler: ShowHide
(http://i61.tinypic.com/8vn4pk.png)

So when the boss is about to die, all hell is unleashed as now all enemies enter some form of pseudo-kamikaze mode, one bad move can be fatal
but still looks overly epic though.
Spoiler: ShowHide
(http://i60.tinypic.com/rviryu.png)

as a heads up, emergency quests are fun, but if you wanna get good drops out of them I suggest you start doing them once you unlock
hard mode.

see you in game everyone XD

lol

I read up more on the Ranger and have a good idea in how to use it now. Apparently, if I use Weak Bullet on the monster's weak spot, the damage is increased even more. And since it is visible to the party (not sure about those multi-parties), it increases everyone's overall DPS. Thing is that I am pretty much just a support class at that point--it's either 15 seconds of increased damage every 90~ seconds with me attacking, or 45 seconds of it with me just popping off Photon Arts when I have the chance.

Why didn't I get a screenshot of us? .__.

1.2MB/sec for me currently, at about 12% done, but still... geez...  I'm used to downloading 500-600MB movies in just about 10 minutes, so this speed is killing me =p

I sent you a request, so it should be there when you get online. It can take a little getting used to the game at first, but it's pretty fun once you get rolling. You also don't need the story patch to play, so you can get started if you want to and let it download in the background. It mostly just translates what the NPCs say, so you can get along alright without it.

A lot of the basic MMO elements are hidden pretty good. Apparently you talk to a terminal (or some computer thing, I don't know what to call it), find a character by name, and then choose to send a friend request.

We need to form a Team/Guild, assuming it doesn't cost anything or requires some pre-req.
Title: Re: The Official Phantasy Star Online Thread!

Afaik making guilds is free, no arks cash needed, however you do need to be above lv.10 aside from that, go nuts.

being in a guild means you've got a guild room to share (aside from yours)

Title: Re: The Official Phantasy Star Online Thread!
Post by: Ryex on February 10, 2014, 06:18:13 pm
read through the thread a bit. basically you have to download the tweaker tool and have it download the game for you (this will take a long time depending on your internet and the window sometimes disappears during the download, so use you have to use your process explorer and resource monitor to watch it network speed and ensure it's still working) then you have to download an install the three English patch files the tweaker downloads and installs them for you except for the story patch which it will give you a link to for you to download yourself (it's a 2GB Dl from mega).

once it's installed it fairly strait forward to play. just launch the tweaker and have it launch the game for you.
this page has some useful guides for playing the game http://bumped.org/psublog/pso2-guide-list/

I guess I'll post my full schedule then. All in PST.

Monday and Wednesday are the same. Gone from 7AM - 1PM and 4:30PM - 8:30PM. Free time: 2-4PM
Tuesday is generally really early morning work (start at 4-6AM) and generally off before 12PM. Band rehearsal at 7PM-9PM. Free time: 11AM-6PM
Thursday is school work so I'm gone 7AM -12PM. I also have class at 7PM - 10PM. Free time: 1PM-6PM
Friday I usually have work in the morning. Generally short, so all afternoon is good for me. Free time: 11AM-12PM (13 hours straight grind--hell yah)
Saturday is more school work, but from 10:30AM - 12PM. Free after that. Free time: 1PM-9PM
Sunday work in the morning usually, also short. Similar to Friday. Free time: 11AM-9PM

As for this week, I'll be on tomorrow before noon for sure, maybe even 10 or 11AM. Sunday I don't work in the morning. Monday is holiday (please tell me you have the day off too).

Sidenote- availability may change depending on projects (I've got two group projects that will probably eat my time when we start getting into the bulk of things). Also, since this is the family desktop, I lose priority when the parents need to get on (or if they tell me to get off cuz I'm playing too much >_>). Unless y'all wanna recommend me a desktop of my own...?

hey guys as a heads up, I reverted into the hunter class, (lv 11).

can you guys help me on the weekend reach lv 20 so I can unlock the fighter class?
I need to kill

the forest's, volcano's and desert's final bosses each with a partisan, sword and wired-lance, in order to gain this new class,

you probably might be wondering.... but you were lv 25 a few days ago.

here's the thing, you character itself does NOT level, your class does, so basically, if you want a new arsenal of weapons and gear, you need to change
classes, but changing classes also means restarting from level 1. however if the class you selected as a main class was already a sub-class, you don't
need to actually start from lv.1

at least it stuns enemies with cool animations

If you use the PSO2 Tweaker to download it, it actually downloads it one file at a time (there are 18,000 files total,) and will resume where it left off if you exit and come back later. :)

Oh, that's what that does. Enabled for everyone :P Why isn't it enabled by default? Why does this game complicate the most simplistic features? Why do I not care because I just keep playing it? Seriously, over 24 hours clocked already.

Added everyone to the Team. Almost 23. And RAVSO, I do have to be 30 for Gunner class. :P

You're getting so far ahead of me, KK20. >.< You'll have to help me catch up. Maybe this weekend.

@DigitalSoul (regarding the Shoutbox conversation:) I'm pretty sure that there's a class that combines Force-magic with close-combat weapons. That might fit your playstyle if you like using swords and stuff. I think you have to unlock it, though. It's called a Techer, I think. I'm not completely sure, though.

I just jumped levels by doing the valentine's EQ missions, also, the counter on the left of the campship has some daily quests you can do for extra EXP.

If you still have those EXP boosters, use them during Emergency Quests, if done properly it's a guaranteed level up on a run.

@KK20, Really? that sucks D: I played as a braver until I hit lv 25, reverted to Hunter (in order to wield weapons needed for a certain quest)
and all I need to do to unlock fighter is kill certain bosses with hunter weapons (boss level must be 21+)

ALSO: you CAN wield certain weapons that are not from your class as long as such weapons says "equippable by all classes"
basically there is a katana you can equip even though you're not a braver, or a rifle you can wield even if you're not a Ranger, however to use their
respective photon arts, you MUST have that weapon's class as main or sub at least.

so for example, if I were still a braver, and found a rifle I can equip, unless I have Ranger as my subclass, I wouldn't be able to use it's PA, I'd only get
the rifle as is.

moments before joining on a crusade with Ryex & Co, there was this special emergency quest, and I thought the exterior areas were the most
dangerous one I was WRONG in so many levels, it's the city itself the one with the highest death count.

And here I thought yesterday was weird/cool...

We start out with concerts, (it's Japan, expect these) great way to distract from gameplay, and if you're feeling pervy there's a code for the
concert to be played on a more..... cloth-less experience, needless to say it was a cool easter egg.

Moments before the concert.

but this was only the calm before the storm, minutes later I join forces with KK20 and decide to go on the emergency quest to kill dark falz one and for all....
I gotta say this is probably the pinnacle of PSO series, it just grows even more awesome every time XD

But in the end, we've taken him out, and boy was it EPIC, plus we got our good share or rares to equip and whatnot, (I think I found a new partisan and a katana
but sucks I can't equip neither yet XD)

I couldn't have done it without KK20's (or the rest of the party's) help XD

Aside from some idiot hacking the fights to be insta-win, it was all good, and bear in mind, this is on hard mode only, higher modes have extra adds, more missions pretty much
this is the tip of the iceberg XD

and I'm one boss away from claiming the fighter class, dual-wielding here I come XD

Yeah, everything gets a little bland with no one to play it with. It's much more fun to experience new things together. It's also hard to feel the same level of excitement when one person is new to the experience and you're all like "Yeah, I know."

Tried Gunner out. It has a really weird style that I'm not used to at all. I think I'll just stick with a Ranger/Hunter combo and aim for high damage support. I'll switch back to Gunner when everyone else is low leveled. Seriously, it's pretty damn weak at level 6 still :P

I'm using the Braver/Fighter build, my katanas do crazy damage, I can still dual-wield while just guarding, and I found these cool boxing gloves that deal
around 400-500 damage per hit when in a combo.

and yeah, bows are broken XD

Haha. No worries. I think that's probably why the majority of people who don't like voice chat avoid it. It is kind of public if there are other people around, kind of like a several hour long phone call. And some people just don't like voice chat and prefer to stick to text. I think that's okay, too. It doesn't really detract from the experience. I actually find it easier to keep track of the conversation when it's over text, though of course it's not a good option for games that require constant quick action without breaks.

as for the controller, it plays good with it, but afaik it's more meddlesome as you still need to chat and use shortcuts for skills and items.

(relevant update is relevant)

Man oh man, where to start....

since last time, PSO2 had only Episode 1 and around Half of Episode 2 released,

as of today we have Episodes 1, 2 and 3 fully released,

-there's a new class called "Bouncer", it can wield twin sabers (dual wield swords)
and jet boots (a la zero suit samus, these let you double jump)

-around 4-5 new playable areas, with new gimmicks per stage

pic for reference, had to spoiler it due to size:
Spoiler: ShowHide
(http://i59.tinypic.com/2j1riae.png)

^ The upper pic references a castle layout that appears during an emergency quest, you see this layout is QUITE special.
during the mission enemies appear on the ground and on the roof of many buildings, (I recommend ranged attacks here)
however every now and then an enemy spawns that changes the weather so poisonous purple mist fills the entire
road, if you want to avoid the hazard you can always get up on the roof of any building and go roof-hopping.
(as seen on the pic),

and yes you can pull crazy surprise attacks this way on many enemies.

-speaking of Emergency Quests:

remember that one specific quest where we had to defend 3 base towers for 5 waves? it was a EP1-based quest,
but now that EP 2 & 3 are out, the Mining Defense EQ now has Chapters 2 & 3 added.

the best part? Mining Defense CH3 is now THE HARDEST EQ mission out there, so hard that to compensate
the difficulty spike, the game is kind enough to let you, RIDE, BIG, FRIGGIN, GUNDAM-ESQUE, ROBOTS!

yes, a player has around 500-700 HP, these machines have easily 8000-9000 HP, deal around 10k damage PER HIT.
and can do a one time only MEGA LASER that pretty much clears the area where you shot it.

the downside? the ride only lasts 2 minutes, so go batsh!t crazy on EVERYTHING.

the kicker? even WITH the cool ride armor, the boss can still take loads of damage to kill, the newer missions
were designed with teamwork in mind so it seems,

either way I've recently picked PSO2 again, still doing Braver/Fighter, and still part of the CP guild (in-game)

Well they also added a casino with 2 minigames, (similar to Sonic Adventure) basically a slot machine game and a shooting minigame that
feels like the trophy shooter game from Brawl.

since most of you have your old accounts you'll probably have tons of rare weapons/items in your inbox as we speak
(I had some for me too)
but you also get 2 casino passes which is basically free currency.

that and nearing December, PSO2's Ultimate mode will be released.

remember PSO1?

it had 4 difficulties, normal, hard, very hard, and ultimate,
from N to VH enemies had slow movements, and your standard RPG status ailments, BUT on ultimate, not only did the
areas change visually but enemies chased you and had OHKO moves sometimes, tbh it was a thrill,

same for PSO2, once ultimate is released not only will the level cap go up (possibly to 100) but old areas will have
quite the makeover,
(SEGA is also hinting of an even harder difficulty, traditionally speaking PS games tend to have a level cap of 200, and PSO2
is still in it's 70's, + a missing episode)

I've been subbed to PSO2 since a bit after launch. but my laptop couldn't handle it. so i didint get far.
Since i got a new gaming PC i haven't really spent anytime on it. but it would be fun to play with some familiar people.

Because of hardcore nostalgia (and the fact that it's been a year), I've decided to download this again on my computer.

23 GB.
Just slit my throat while you're at it.

Amazingly finished downloading everything. Took about 8 hours.
And of course there would be a maintenance in effect.

RAVSO, teach me everything again D:

EDIT:
I found out that the game suffered those DDoS attacks last year. Now I'm getting a pop up window that just says [249] and nothing else after inputting my account information. Been searching for solutions and nothing has worked yet.

Oh CRAP XD I uninstalled mine to make room, but since you're going back to PSO2 I might just as well reconsider a download XD

as for the error 249...

try the following.

-use the proxy function on the PSOTweaker (if you don't have this, download it, as it also takes care of your patches)
-check your PSO2 related mail, most of the time (at least on gmail) it supports translation + they usually tell you server status
-site could possibly be on maintenance, wait it out a bit.

should you manage to get in and start replaying, my suggestion is, to use those EXP +50% & 100% items when an emergency quest is about
to start.

speaking of those.... DO NOT try to do the Shingeki no Kyojin EQ alone, that stuff is hard without team coordination XD

Oh, I didn't know you "quit" :\ Well, hopefully this can inspire others to get back in again.

I think my tweaker didn't download all the files or something. I remember running the "Check PSO2 for Updates" and it said I was missing like 3000 files, but it didn't do anything more. Just stopped.
It seems that with yesterday's maintenance they updated the tweaker and it's downloading the files now, so I'm going to see if that was the problem. Fingers crossed.

EDIT: HUZZAH that was it. Now I don't remember how to do anything anymore!

modding my class into Braver/Hunter,

fighter has some cool stuff but hunter's overall ATK is what sold it for me, (besides I look cool wielding a cloud-sized blade as a plus)

I'll probably get back to it once I'm done with my SQL hi-jinx next week

I really hope I don't have to re-install Windows 8 just to get this to run =( Downloading the latest tech build to see if I can trick the game, so, I'll let you know.

NOTICE: Big images are big, so will be properly shown via spoiler tags.

Alright so after dusting off my old account I managed to get back into action pretty quickly, here's today's craziness in summarized pics.

Spoiler: ShowHide
(http://i58.tinypic.com/10i54qv.jpg)

There's no better way to make a comeback than throwing a monster 3 times your size and possibly weight
15 feet across the floor in the middle of a desert raid followed by a massive storm of insect-like abominations.

Spoiler: ShowHide
(http://i62.tinypic.com/23u7m78.png)

The enemy units level up the higher the wave number is, fortunately, you also get this bad boy to take
for a ride, no surprises here, I love this mech segment.

Spoiler: ShowHide
(http://i58.tinypic.com/jhdh8i.png)

Guns aren't your main concern? try slicing up EVERYTHING in front of you for massive damage.
from standard combos to this sick dash attack, guaranteed to deal at least 10k damage per hit
(considering the insane HP some of the bosses in here have I'd say this evens things up a bit)

Spoiler: ShowHide
(http://i62.tinypic.com/kbekbr.png)

Cool swordplay & gunplay still not enough? If you've made it so far as to reach the final wave
they give you THIS, this deathray can singlehandedly make or break the wave as you basically
decimate whatever the hell stands in your sight, did I mentioned how much I LOVE this ride armor?
well it still needs more emphasis XD

Spoiler: ShowHide
(http://i58.tinypic.com/2urmuyr.png)

I gotta say, these A.I.S. Carriers are purposely OP as hell, then again seeing how this is an EQ with a terrible
success rate it's understandable why they give you these, it's also noted how fast they are,
you can reach the edge of the map in SECONDS by simply spamming the dash button, (feels good man)

Needless to say, this EQ was hard as hell, but worth it, aside from 10 nega-photons (meh) I did get some
good meseta (around 80k with a tri boost 100%) it also gave me some cool armor parts + enough fun
points (I kept reviving everyone) to get my weapon camo.

Raising this topic from the dead, because apparently the game refuses to die, and received massive updates recently.

So after getting my new laptop and playing some of the oldies, I decided to give PSO2 another chance (especially since I never got to do a solid 60fps run
on my previous laptop beforehand, and wanted to see how well it performs over here), and I gotta say, man is the game
still active, with additional loads of missions and changes (like an apparently well needed braver/gunner nerf, and some buffs to the hunter/ranger)

But the biggest highlight of them all was that PSO2 recently released (as of January 2016) it's long awaited continuation to the plot:

EPISODE 4 [RENEWAL]

<Trailer for relevance>
PSO2 - EPISODE 4 [RENEWAL] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRyvsg8SmLs)

Highlights include:

it's quite a list so I'll just shorten this part a bit:
Spoiler: ShowHide

-A new weapon type resembling a conductor's baton which is used to control summoned creatures.
(to emphasize: you have this one creature that looks like a pokemon (let's call it pseudo-mon from now on) and you get to
control it via conductor's baton in what appears to be a weaponized mix of pokemon amie & the wind waker)

-Skill Chain Combinations
(you can now do some sick follow-up combos regarding both of your chosen classes, Example: doing a Braver photon-art then following up
with a gunner skill or photon-art and ending with a Force technique, assuming you have the proper build for it)

-The (now fully working) inclusion of the new Race [Duman] & [Bouncer & Techer] classes.
(these were available since EP:3 but were limited in terms of skills & weapons that were not considered good enough to make a decent
build, as of EP:4 they're as viable as any other classes in-game, as for the Duman class, it's basically a glass cannon, you get to do insane
damage at the cost of being taken down in 1-3 hits, you MUST rely on perfect blocks in order to survive sometimes.)

-New photon-arts & weapons.
(the reason Bouncer & Techer are now viable)

-Character creation updated.
(SEGA added some extra customization options and now it's greater than ever, any per-existing costumes you've had are now segmented instead of being one-piece so you can now mix and match, also as a plus it gave veteran players a free makeup salon ticket (an item you only get by paying cash in real life) to celebrate the changes.)

-Added quick-character slots.
(Previously when someone wanted to change their classes into another class they previously had, you needed to re-equip and re-customize everything from scratch again which IMO takes at least 30+ mins depending on how complex your build is, with quick character slots, you can now save an existing build and
swap it without the hassle of re-doing all that customizing)

-Added more user-friendly beginner tutorials
(The game's learning curve might seem steep for newcomers but now there's proper training missions one can take that also yield acceptable items & meseta)

-Added new areas to explore
(from the trailer you can see it's a futuristic version of Japan's capital Tokyo, with the twist of having all sorts of new enemies mimicking modern-day machinery,
and for some weird reason... a T-Rex? oh well...  :knight:   the capital itself features a Day/Night cycle, and since it's HUGE compared to the other maps, it also
has ways for fast-travel (inb4 gotta go fast jokes))

-Added the XH (Xtra Hard) difficulty to new areas
(thought PSO2 was easy? XH mode alters the behavior of ALL enemies into a more violent pattern, gives them stat boosts, and overall makes missions a lot
harder, on the bright side, XH drops pretty sweet loot as well.)

-Added a new bonus for daily runs.
(Previously, doing daily missions only gave you a pitiful amount of EXP/Meseta and wasn't that big of an incentive for people to do these, from now on,
whenever you complete your 3rd daily mission (3rd mission each day) there is a chance that it will drop you a bonus ticket (it's more of a key) that let's
you play a bonus mission, what's special about it you ask? this mission single-handedly yields an insane amount of EXP/Meseta and guarantees rare drops
at the end, if you pair it with a tri-boost, you easily level up 2-3 times if your character is underleveled.)

Moving on to the plot, it's a direct continuation to the EPISODE 3 finale, and does contain a nice meta-twist along the way.
Spoiler for those that actually want to discover this:
Spoiler: ShowHide

After the end of EPISODE 3 in which your character is basically placed in a cryo-container (KH2 all over again, if you ask me)
EP4 begins after a time-skip of X amount of years (the game never directly tells you how much time has passed) and upon
waking up you are presented with the realization that you (along with the rest of the ARKS) are merely videogame characters,
in a digital settings yet for some reason are self-conscious enough to have some form of free will, it's because of this that
you (for some unexplained reason) decide to manifest in reality, and of all the places you appear on, you start in Tokyo in
the year 2028 A.D. where apparently the REAL ARKS exist, now it's up to your avatar to find out what's going on as apparently
the same videogame where you came from is now possessing the machines down in Tokyo and turned the city into chaos
(hence the new area of the game),

Some people are loving this story-arc so far, some people are condemning the twist to be uncalled for, but all in all, it's fun
(reminded me of star ocean a bit)

I've figured the game has changed a lot since I've dropped it so I'm gonna pick it up again and check what's up, hopefully I should
be able to run it just fine.

The patch isn't 100% done yet (and some items & text that is server-sided is impossible to translate with the patch) but other than that, it's fully playable, they even removed the IP bad on non-Japanese IP's since 2015.

and if memory serves correctly, KK20 created Chaos Project as a guild, if we do certain guild quests we can get a shared room, and probably decorate it,
guess I'll do some of these quests on my new alt.

I managed to create a female character (alias: Rose, love to keep things short for a change) and tried my hand at the force class,
compared to the braver/hunter build I was using before, it's an entirely different ballgame so far, I've got mixed feelings about it.

on the plus side, I've got a few of those EXP + 30000 tickets, and just popping one of those bad boys was enough to reach lv 10+ on
my force class, then I realized it's best to use them for leveling sub-classes, but the twist is, in order to do that, you have to basically
equip the desired class to level (the sub class) as your MAIN class, THEN use the EXP ticket.

Aw man... now I feel bad, especially because I totally forgot about the CP the coincidence, oh well, at least I can still
re-class if force doesn't feel like my playstyle, the only thing that gets to me is how female clothing is easily 5x more expensive
than male clothing, and plain skyrockets to absurd amounts if it's full of fanservice.

I did some tests on the new laptop for PSO2, at the highest settings possible, still run it at 120 fps, it's..... beautiful  :twitch:

of course, add too many explosions, and it dips back to 30 fps, but only if ALL 12 people decide to detonate grenades at the same time.

I am currently at this time updating and applying english patches for PSO2, now all I need it to get the time to actually play the game.

I also need to decide on a main class, I am thinking of Force or Ranger since it seems you all prefer Braver.
Title: Re: The Official Phantasy Star Online Thread!

Ranger/Hunter myself since that seemed to be like the bread and butter combo. I want to get good with Gunner, but it feels like too many button presses for me.

You can change classes whenever you want, but obviously there are some permanent choices you make that are better suited for one specific class. Like females have higher base ranged damage than males.

Can't recall. You can change it by going to someone standing behind a desk (which you can also assign skill points to a tree).

here's a heads up on how classes work:

PSO2 has NO player levels, rather class levels, all the EXP you earn goes towards your class level, however, as you progress through the game,
you will eventually obtain the ability to equip a secondary class, which grants you the benefits of using that class' photon arts and universal weapons
with the only downside of having the secondary class take twice the amount of EXP to level up. PSO2 allows you to mix and match classes as you see fit.
which brings me to explain leveling up.

leveling up has 2 phases, when you level up, obviously your stats increase by a certain amount, but you also earn a skill point per each level up,
once you have a good enough amount of points to use, go to the class counter (located in the gate area, on the back section) and you can
spend your skill points on class-specific abilities, be mindful of how you spend them, since these make or break your character on the long run

(example: my alt character Rose is a Force, so I'm doing a Force/Techer build so I'm relying on this skill-tree in particular: Your standard beginner's Force build (http://pso2-skill.pwnedgalaxy.net/skillcalc.php?09uAbxImbxImbxImbxImbxImbxImbxImbxIm0jdOdBdoIbi2dBeKINfdnIdJksNI2000000dodAI2bndAbofJkrsHsIndAIb00000fdBboIbIdIoiocAfnxJkdxI200000fdoIbfcD2OdKqnGAJkIbIn0000jdBbniN2SGA2K8cKIk00000fdBdAidrBqnGFqBIxIkGAcA000000ebIo4Ni2J2rFmxIklo00008doIbkIanqBfrFeFjJkIb00008))

PSO2 starts off with weak damage, but eventually piles up (this is more significantly seen once you stack your skill points) into hundreds of thousands of damage per second, and is also one of the few RPG's where target locking the weak point deals considerably more damage than a standard all out attack, long story short: not doing enough damage? attack it's weak point.

Ok so it is similar to the Phantasy Star Universe game then, I just need to decide n a build then.

I went with trusty ol' Hunter to start off,but I am more than likely to change it up once I understand the game a bit more ( where everything is "city" and all that).

but I just finished the tutorial where it teaches you the basic controls and got the the "city" and stopped where I am working at the time  :haha:.

out of curiosity, who's the guild leader of CP's team in-game?

I've been doing some team missions on the guild counter to rack up some score, (this is how you raise your guild's rank + get
access to a guild room and other functions) but then I realized only the guild leader can level up the rank and
purchase a room with the current guild score.

Meant to reply to this even though I answered it in Skype.

I made myself the leader since I was a Manager and Ryex hasn't been on for at least a month, allowing me to assume control. I made RAVSO a Manager now so he can do w/e guild stuff he wants.

Still waiting for a time we can all be on.

I'm sorry Boris-sandpie D:
Last weekend was super busy. I have what I need to do written down on paper--pretty hoping that it works the first time.
