Has anyone here played it yet?  I'm about 7 hours in.

It's a really good classic-style RPG.  Hits the minmaxing craving hard, but leaves a lot to be desired from the characters.  That said, I'm greatly enjoying it.

If y'all have it, we should add each other for Ablink.

Once, not so long ago, there were four powerful wizards:  Rokh'mahn the Sandstorm Gypsy, Arithyst the Icy Gale, Gibbous the Tidal Fury, and Tetrodo the Blight Sage.  Together, these four traveled the world in search of rare and unique relics to call their own.

Their combined power so great, that not even the most powerful hold could keep their treasures from them.

Upon completing their journey, they settled upon the Crescent Isle, each molding the land to fit their desires, and raising a tower to serve as their fortress.  For years, they studied, poured over their relics, and remained isolated from the world, and one another.

Then suddenly, they vanished.

Treasure hunters from around the world thought to steal the once wizard-guarded treasure, but failed miserably, as all those who ventured forth into the towers disappeared, never to return.

You are one such treasure hunter, but ingenuity is on your side, for your Pendant of Recall has served you well in the past, and once more you strike out in search of ancient treasure.

March 18, 2012, 06:36:54 pm

I got challenged to make a game by the 19th.
The theme I was challenged with was Catgirls.

This is the result.

YOU are Quality Assurance Engineer XR-1183, tasked with the final check of every catgirl produced by the factory.

The lazy workers upstairs tend to miss pieces when they assemble the domestic cat girls, so you must ensure that none leave the factory without all of their pieces.

Hit the correct arrow keys to put on the piece they're missing.

Experience Points is a game design blog I'm going to be updating as I work on my latest project.

I'm making a web game that I'm intending to produce like a webcomic.  Every few weeks, there will be more content, and save files will work between each of them.  At the same time, I want to try and expose my design and development process, as well as showcase art and possibly demo versions as I go.

I feel like Colorful failed to launch well because I didn't have anyone really interested in the game beforehand, so I'm trying to see if I can build up interest with a development blog.

Anyway, if you've got tumblr (or if you don't, sign up if you're interested), please subscribe, tell your friends, try to help spread word, I want to make this game a success.

I am going to begin development on my next game, but I've got a problem.  I have three ideas I like, and I am not sure which one I should work on.  So, I'm making it a poll for you all to let me know what you think.

Here are a bit of details on each idea:
Running Riot: ShowHide
You play an orc named Rokg.  This is a rather simple arena beat-em-up.  You wield his hammer and smash cute things to bits.  Several zones with a couple arenas each and a boss.  Each zone will have different environmental hazards.  You can upgrade Rokg's hammer with an assortment of magical runes.

King and Country: ShowHide
You play a warrior king...or a rogue king...or a wizard king...or a cleric king...or any combination of the three depending on what specializations you choose at character creation.  Then, you delve into dungeons, explore the map, and build up your kingdom, so you can defend it from the forces of evil, and ultimately defeat the dark overlord.  Turn based RPG, mixed with a little roguelike.

Magic Mirror: ShowHide
Likely either a megaman style game with persistent powerups, or a metroidvania.  You have a magic mirror that you can use to shield yourself from enemy attacks, but it can also absorb certain powers from your enemies that you can toss right back at them.  The shield would have limited 'memory' that you can expand by advancing in the game.  No ideas for story yet.

By all means give me some feedback as well, don't think it's limited to just your vote.  I'm very interested in hearing how you came to your decision, as well as any other input on the ideas themselves.

The poll will close in 7 days.

The staff of New Chaos Project has been hard at work discussing possible security and safety issues rampant on the site during the Blizzard-era.  We wish to move on, move forward, and present to you a new and renovated website that we can all exist on peacefully and with the most productivity possible.

That being said, we felt that the old rules and regulations were far too lenient, and in some cases did not provide adequate protection from the dangers of internet communities.

The new site rules are as below:

Rule 1: All avatars are to be chosen from the on-site avatar packs found in your profile information only.  Signatures are to contain text only.  There will be a grace period of two days (until random 3rd, 2011) to change your profile picture.  Failure to do so will result in a profile wipe, and a three-day ban.

Rule 2: Flaming of any type will be met with at minimum a three-day ban.  This ban can be increased based on the severity of the flaming in question.  Flaming is defined as mocking, hurtful speech or intentional hazing, as well as thread bashing.  Overly-harsh critique in ones game topic can also be considered flaming.  The actual definition of flaming is subject to moderator interpretation.

Rule 3: All content must be kept PG.  No partial or hinted nudity, violence, blood, gore, strong language, suggestive themes, alcohol, drugs, or slang terms related to any of the aforementioned terms may be posted about in any way shape or form.  Failure to follow this rule will result in a two-month ban.  Subject to moderator interpretation.

Rule 4: SPAM outside the SPAM forum is not tolerated, and will be met with a three-day posts ban.

Rule 5: No member is to at any point in time "call out" or otherwise deface the reputation of a staff member.  This hurts our integrity and can whittle away our authority and will result in a perma-ban.

Rule 6: These rules are non-negotiable and bans are not subject to appeal, any attempt to do either will result in an extended ban.

Staff is exempt from these rules as is necessary to keep the forum running smoothly.

Any post that breaks any or all of the above rules should be reported to the staff via the forum's convenient built-in report feature.  Said members who receive a permanent ban will be erased from the webpage and IP banned so that they may not cause any further issues.

These rules will be enforced retroactively, meaning that if any content currently exists and breaks these rules, bans will be posted accordingly.  Please use the grace period (until random 3rd) to clean up your profiles, posts, and topics.

Enjoy your stay at Chaos Project.

Chat / Advice Please?

Ok so big deal.

Tom might be moving up here within the next 3 weeks.
A friend of mine (and recently him) is in need of roommates, as his mother (who owns the apartment) is going to be moving in with someone else, and needs to rent it out.  I want to move in with Tom at the place.

It's about 20 minutes away from where I live now, and rent would be $750 a month before utilities.  Split between the minimum of 3 people, this would be pretty easy to manage.  This is not what I am worried about.

What I'm worried about is my parents.
They're just a bit overprotective sometimes.

I'm expecting to get a long long long lecture about how I'm immature, irresponsible, and have no idea what I'm doing when I tell them I want to move out.  I'm also expecting to hear "well then pay for college yourself."  Why does this bother me?  We owe about $600+ a month to the school and we haven't paid for a while, leaving me with probably $3k unpaid, and no hold on my account surprisingly.  If they don't help me pay for school (which they have been) then I can't finish.

I need to finish school, but I don't want to live here and deal with all the shit I get on a daily basis.

I'm not sure how to go about broaching the subject, and I'm afraid of being forced to stay by threats of being unable to finish school.

:(

It's like Steam, but it connects to IndieDB and ModDB, so it's more focused on small-time producers and game modding (like Portal, HL2, Unreal3).

It's pretty slick.  I downloaded 2 portal mods and 3 HL2 mods just last night after signing up.

Projects / [XNA 3.1] Colorful
January 08, 2011, 09:50:26 pm

Games are so violent nowadays, what with all of the guns and blood and explosions and nuclear bombs and alien takeovers.  It's hard to lose track of what is truly important: being happy.

In Colorful, being happy is all that matters.  Being happy is the core game mechanic, and you score higher by being happier.

"Tell me more!" you might say, "How can a mere abstract virtualization of our world represent and interpret the complex emotion that is happiness?"

Colorful puts you in the shoes of an every day bi-polar named Dave.  Dave is subject to violent mood swings, and has been prescribed mood-enhancing medication to maintain his ability to live in modern society.  Your goal is to keep Dave as happy as possible by picking up his pills before the time limit runs out.

Current Progress
Video

Check back frequently, I'm making rapid progress.

Rules of Play

  • Dave has 5 emotions in his spectrum: RAGE, Disgruntled, Bored, Happy, and HYPER

  • Each emotion is tied to a score multiplier: 50%, 75%, 100%, 150%, 200%

  • Each Pill is worth 100 points.

  • When the level timer runs out, your score for the level is multiplied based on Dave's ending emotional level, and then your final score level is added to your running total

  • Enemies known as Downers will make Dave unable to pick up pills for a couple seconds by making him as depressed as they are.

  • When picking up pills, be sure to not max out your Overdose meter, or the level will immediately end.

  • Spike pits will also immediately end the level

  • There are no lives and no game overs, you play through the levels at your own pace, and can repeat any to get higher scores.  The worst thing you can do is not score as high as you could have, either by ending the level prematurely, or by not timing your pill intake well.

Features

  • Programmed from the ground up by NAMKCOR with XNA 3.1 for PC

  • Simple gameplay formula that caters to casuals and hardcores alike

  • Original Soundtrack by Arrow-1

  • Easily modded: levels are interpreted from png images, making custom level design a breeze!

How can I help?
I don't want this game to be free, in fact, I'd like to sell it for a couple bucks on steam or on my own website if I can.  There's just one issue with that: I don't have a Visual Studio 2008 license, so Microsoft can kill me if I make profit off of the game.

That being said.

If you are feeling generous and would like to help me raise money toward purchasing a professional license for myself, I would be eternally grateful.  Donators will be eligible for a free copy of the game when it is released, as well as pre-release test participation should they be interested.

Does this mean there will be no free version?
There will be a 100% free demo version available, but the demo version will not support custom levels, and will not contain the full game's content.

Video Games / Dementium II [Review]
June 18, 2010, 03:14:03 pm

Dementium II is the sequel to the Survival Horror FPS game Dementium: The Ward, by Renegade Kid.  Like its predecessor, Dementium II is a Survival Horror FPS, and what it does, it does exceedingly well.

In Dementium: The Ward, you assume the role of William Redmoor, a patient trapped within his own nightmares.  A Doctor had trapped you there in what he referred to as "phase 1."  The game was short, but eventful and entertaining.

Dementium II picks up where the first one left off, with William waking up after his brain surgery, being told he was out for about 5 days, but now had to be moved as the Doctors needed his bed.  You are escorted to a cell in clearly what looks like a jail, and after a brief touch-screen tutorial (how to examine, how to look, how to move) you are immediately thrown into a psychotic other world full of monstrosities and chains.  Needless to say, Dementium II holds nothing back.  Unfortunately the storytelling elements are kind of slow and a little clunky, mostly focusing on your willingness to explore and find notes scattered around the hospital, but if you're willing to do the leg work it's well worth it.

Graphically, Dementium II is beautiful as far as DS games are concerned.  High quality texture and model work mesh as well as they did in the first, creating believable and chilling environments.  In theme, Dementium II takes after Silent Hill.  William is careened around a maddening psychotic prison one moment, full of monsters and blood, and the next he is being assaulted by prison guards.  The point of separation is how quickly the monsters begin to invade even the normal prison, creating a very gripping and suspenseful experience.

Dementium II's gameplay mechanics are clean, precise, and streamlined.  Boasting a variety of weapons, from shanks to sledgehammers to revolvers, Dementium II manages to inject fun and well tuned combat into the Survival Horror genre, one pitfall many of the best games cannot seem to overcome.

Aiming is accomplished by manipulating the touch screen with the stylus, attacking with the triggers, and crouching/jumping also handled by convenient buttons on the touch screen.  Weapons are easliy swapped with the inventory button, allowing for a quick med or gun reload if necessary, allowing Dementium II to shift the difficulty to the boss fight or enemies, instead of making the interface your greatest foe.

The map is extremely easy to read and use, updating itself for you with locked and open doors, and one massive improvement over the previous game is that when backtracking enemies do not respawn, which encourages exploration and makes the game a lot less tedious.  That is not to say the game is not challenging, but it eases the new player into the game with a smooth learning curve.

Music is adequately creepy and mournful, featuring some of the main track from the previous game, however the real audio quality comes from the use of sound effects.  Dementium II doesn't rely on black and no-combat-with-flashlight to create horror the same way its predecessor did, it uses sound and environments to keep you on your toes and biting your fingernails.  Creepy scarab beetles and screaming inmates, chains rattling and combat's hectic discord are all executed masterfully.

Presentation - 8
> somewhat tedious storytelling practices as well as being a kinda short game take some points off in my book.

Graphics - 9
> the game is just as great to look at as the first one, and their other game 'Moon', Renegade Kid clearly knows what they are doing.

Gameplay - 9.5
> it's not a 'scare the shit out of you' horror game, but it's creepy and maddening and all around fun to play and experience.  Sometimes the storytelling gets in the way, but more often than not it's a gripping experience and certainly action packed.

Audio - 8
> the music is creepy as hell and the sound effects managed to make me jump on multiple occasions, but some of the audio is somewhat low quality (as in compression), unlike a lot of other DS games.

Overall - 8.6 / 10
> a very impressive game, and it's absolutely the sort of Survival Horror game that the industry needs.  Not quite as impressive as Renegade Kid's "Moon" but it's still definitely worth a play for anyone who enjoys Horror games.

Prepare for phase 2

Premise:
X-Dodge is a game I made for a class on game engine design.  We made an engine through the class, then (on Tuesday) were given a the assignment to make a simple game in a week.  This is my game.

Gameplay:
X-Dodge (or just Dodge) is a hybrid of Avalanche and Simon.
You use your mouse pointer to move the little dot around the circle, avoiding the Flying Killer X's of Doom, while trying to stay on the lit up areas of the track for maximum point gain.  The pointer must remain in the track or you'll suffer a fate worse than death, so trust me don't do it.

Instructions:
The game is packaged in an installation file (.msi), just run it to install
It installs to C:\[Program Folder]\Temperance Games\X-Dodge\
IF THE INSTALLATION FAILS, PLEASE CONTACT ME ON THE FORUMS OR VIA EMAIL AND TELL ME THE ERROR YOU GOT AS WELL AS YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM, YOUR DIRECT X VERSION, IF YOU HAVE .NET 3.5 OR ABOVE, AND IF YOU HAVE A WINSXS FOLDER UNDER C:\WINDOWS\

This is pissing me off.

Quote
"A federal appeals court has ruled that the Federal Communications Commission lacks the authority to require broadband providers to give equal treatment to all Internet traffic flowing over their networks," the Associated Press reports.

The wire service says that "Tuesday's ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia is a big victory for Comcast Corp., the nation's largest cable company. It had challenged the FCC's authority to impose so called 'net neutrality' obligations. It marks a serious setback for the FCC, which needs authority to regulate the Internet in order to push ahead with key parts of its
massive national broadband plan."

Julius Genachowski, chairman of the FCC, has made the case that the Web should be accessible to everyone on the same terms with no legal content blocked.
