General Discussion / Bad Game Name word List

This is a list of almost every word you never want to see in your game title, either because it's cliche, over used, or other.

1. Chronicles - Single most overused word in video game titles, and also often improperly used. Please if you absoloutly must use it, check it's dictionary definition.
2. Super - Not necissarily something you put in the title of an rpg, but none the less, the only justifyable reason for this word in your title any more is if it was made in the 90s for the super nintendo entertainment system.
3. Extreme - Games with this in their title seem to be anything but extreme.
4. Ultimate - Your game is bound to be an Ultimate Failure, if this word sounds like a good word to put in your title.
5. Party - o.O wait what? an rpg with the word Party in it? Bad idea....
6. Dragon - This is the most cliche, and should only be used if your game's point is to be cliche.
7. Magic/Mana/Other word for magic here - If its common term for magic its a bad idea unless you got a really good reason.
8. Apocolypse - Zombie can be okay, but if your title is something like "Ultimate Dragon Apocolypse" go as 4chan /b for help, im sure they will tell you to kill yourself, and I agree.
9. Love - Depends on it's sourounding words, but its kinda cliche even if its not used often.
10. Journy - Every rpg has one... why must yours be part of your title?
11. Secret - Ill tell you what is not a secret, a game with this in the title totally doesn't have one!
12. Final - As we have all seen with the popular series "final fantasy" final... actually means "we are gonna go on for another 500 games if we can.
13. Fantasy - No..... its a sci-fi rpg! Lets call it Final Sci-fi instead!!!
14. Crystal - lets face it, anything that sounds semi magical has been used.
16. Demon/Angel - Im gonna stop explainging these now
17. Legend
18. Profecy
19. Epic
20. Blood
21. Eye
22. Monster
23. Sword
24. Story
25. Knight
26. Night
27. Power
28. Gold
29. Villan
30. Darkness
31. Light

There are about 100 more no-no's so the list will grow as sugestions are added, and if you dont agree with something i have said, fine, use the word in your title.... but i still advise caution when doing so.
Oh and yes some of the words are mispelled, but are generally recognizable.

The Basics of Good Computer Hygiene



Hello there Chaos Project  :D welcome to Xero's Computer Hygiene class.
Some of you might be wondering:
What is computer Hygiene  :???:
It's simple really.
-Good computer Hygiene means you are taking care of your computer, watching out for its health, and cleaning up any messes you might make.
-Bad computer Hygiene means you are visiting lots of porn or warez sites and not watching your back, another problem is often Torrents  :( .
"But Xero! I like my porn! I cant live without it!  :shy: "
Thats okay! You dont have to! You just have to clean up your computer when you are done  ;)
"Where do I clean up? Is it hard?  :huh: "
Not at all kiddos  :D Its really quite easy. Just clear your cookies and run a virus scan every once in a while!"Cookies? I like those! They taste good!"
:roll: No silly! not those kind of cookies! Here let me explain in detail!



Cookies: Cookies are little devices that internet browsers and sites use to do thing such as keep track of wishlists or what you did last time you where there. Some sites though use them for more dangerous activities, such as grabbing and stealing your passwords, or watching what other sites you visit and sending that information back to the person that planted the cookie, so that they know what to advertise on their site. This can all be very bad if you do any sort of online banking, or you have any private information on your computer at all.
What to do: Well you dont want to turn cookies off, because many sites need them, so that you can use the site's full array of features, Instead, in many browsers (such as Mozilla FireFox) you can have the computer automatically delete the cookies when you close the window, you can also do things like this with your browsing history.  In internet explorer you can go up to the menu bar and go to "Tools" then to "Internet Options" then on the general tab you can go down and hit the "delete browsing history" button. A submenu will pop up and several more options will be available, you will want to hit delete on both temporary internet files, and cookies.


"Alright Xero! I deleted my browsing history and cookies and temporary internet files. Im all clean right!?  8)Wrong, sorry kiddo, its not that simple. Sometimes mean people go through too much trouble to be foiled by that alone. That only covered cookie type spyware. There are hundreds of types  :^_^': .
"Oh no! What do i do!? I dont want them stealing my information and identity! :o "
Dont worry too much, there are hundreds of programs out there that stop bad people like that, and your Identity is more likely to be stolen from mail you didn't shred or some giant company's computer than your own, though it never hurts to be safe. Its really hard to get all the nooks and crannies that spyware hides in, so sometimes you need help.
"But Xero! You said there are hundreds of programs! How do I know which one is the best!?"
Well there is no sure way to tell which one is the best, some programs are better at picking up certain types of spyware, adware, and viruses than others. So if you have both Norton and Mcaffee on your computer, one will pick up one set of problems, and the other will pick up another, of course there are some that they will both see, but these are the easy ones that everyone sees. The problem with this is that both Norton and Mcaffee are expensive, and its not worth it to buy them both, or even one of them if you can get the same protection for free.
"But Xero! Pirating is Illegal and morally wrong!  :o "
Well buddy, I never said that you had to pirate. There is a lot of free software out there too. Just like there are badguys that will give you spyware for free, there are also good guys that will take it away for free too.
"So which programs should I use?"


Avg Anti-Virus - Avg is a great free bit of software, it catches most viruses and as long as I have had it, I have never had a problem. One of the greatest bits about avg is that it updates roughly every 6 hours, so you know your always the most up to date in the war against nasty computer viruses. Of course AVG also has a full paid for version, it costs around $25USD for a 2 year contract, instead of $120 for a 1 year with MCaffee. The full version catches spyware and adware too. Avg even scans your email, and as a nice little schedualer so that you can have it scan every couple of days or so in the middle of the night while your not using your computer.

Spybot Search & Destroy - Spybot S&D is great for many reasons beyond just spyware. Though you have to manually update it, it comes in many languages, and is also free. It has several other tools too that are not spyware related. Such as a registry cleaner and fixer, a little thing called TeaTimer which double checks with you when something potentially harmfull tries to change your registry, it also comes with a device that stops annoying "Quick Loaders" from activating, you pick and chose which ones do and dont get to, this leads to a faster boot up. It also loads your HostS file with tons of dangerous sites, so that your computer cant access them by accident, no matter what internet browser you are using. Spybot doesn't have a pay version, it runs entirely on donations. Meaning if you like the software, you can donate to the site so that they can continue updating and making it. Spybot also has a schdualer so you can set it to run at like 4am when your not using the computer.


"So Xero, are these programs the best?"
No not necissarilly, these are just my person favorites. Its impossible to tell which one is the end all be all best, but easy to tell when something is bad and doesn't protect you very well.
"So thats how I keep my system clean huh?"
Well not entirely, thats just a couple ways to stop other people from messing it up for you. Of course if you download or install something dangerous your still in trouble until it's removed, so you have to be careful who you trust, especially with torrents. There are other parts to computer Hygiene too.
"What more!?"
Yes more, sorry but if you want your computer to last, there are a lot of things you can do to take care of it. A good example is defragging.
"Defragging?"
Yeah its a simple process in which the computer rearanges bits and pieces of files so that they are all in one place together, that way when you use your programs, the computer doesn't have to look all over for the files.
"Xero, now your just being silly, all of the files for my programs are in the same folder."
Well yes, thats true, but thats just how you see them, the computer has several spinning discs in the hardrive, and even though you see all the pieces together, they can still be in many different locations on those discs. The computer doesn't like to have wasted disc space, so when you have a whole bunch of files, and you delete some, then install a new program, it fills in the gaps on the disc where you deleted files from, but sometimes there isn't enough space right there. So it uses all of that space, then searches for the next empty space on the disk. When you defrag, it simply moves those blocks around so that all of the files that work together, sit right next to eachother. Unfortunately though, you need free space on the discs inorder to defrag, so always leave about 15% of your hardrive space free.
"Xero, my defragger takes forever! Windows is sooo slow! I dont want to defrag, its too much time."
Well bud, you need to, about once a week is best. If you really have problems with the speed, try deleting a few things if your hardrive is kinda full. You can also just set it up to run when you go to bed. The bad thing about windows is that its defragger takes forever, and is inefficient. You also cant do anything at all while its doing it, or you might screw up the computer. There are alternate defraggers out there, my personal favorite is:


Auslogistics Defrag - This little defragger is great, it runs fast, and when your done it tells you how much effeciency you have gained out of defragging, though somtimes i doubt its accuracy. Its free to defrag, but there are some other features it has as well, these cost to get though. Personally i wouldn't get them, you can get free programs that will do those too, spybot can do most of them. Another great thing about this is that you can do other things while it's defragging. It slows down the comp a tiny bit while it's doing so, and it will slow down a lot when its defragging something you are currently using, but it is well worth getting, especially for free.


"So Xero is that all?"
Well no, there is always more you can do, but for now that is all you should worry about. If the programs I listed dont meet your needs then you have a big problem, and its probably too late. If after a couple trys you still cant get your system clean, you might just want to do a system restore or f-disk(reformat) the whole thing, and be more careful next time.
Remember it's always easier to maintain, than to clean up after you let the problems pile up for a while.

Script Requests / [xp]Creation System - Needs Fixing

Basically the creation systems (item/weapons) offered at this site where not exactly what I was looking for, but I did find one (after about 30 seconds of googling) The unfortunate part is that something is happening when i try to create the weapons in the demo. The game crashes. I have tried several times over and over again with different combos of items, it still crashes every time.
I was wondering if someone here could take a look at the script or something to figure out what is going on, and hopefully fix the problem. If you would rather just make the system over again (doubtfull) thats fine too, w/e I just need the features/fuctions that this one has.

The creator of the script seems to have put this up for free distribution, no conditions, which im assuming he just wants credit.
There are a few other things about the script that seem to be annoying as well (cant handle more than one weapon with the same ID, meaning putting weapons in shops is impossible) it would be nice to find a fix for these, but not entirely necissary. I can always try to work around them.

Alright for any of you that have played Legend Of Dragoon you already know about the additon system, for those of you who haven't I will have to explain cause it is this system that I desire.

In battle, upon proforming a normal attack, you have the oportunity to perform what is essentially a combo.
The way you do this is pretty simple, once you hit the attack button, a circle (or in the case of Legend Of Dragoon, a square) appears on the screen. The objective is to hit the attack button at the same time as another circle from outside the screen starts closing in and then meets with the smaller stationary circle. If you perform it right, you either do the attack, or depending on which combo you have selected have the oportunity to do it again. Every time you sucessfully perform this action, the next circle gets harder to do, and a small ammount of sp (spirit power, or in the case i will be using it, soul rage) is added. If you fail to hit the button at the right time, the attack stops at what it has currently done, doing only slightly more than normal damage. The alternative is that you suceed every time until a set number has been preformed and then you finish the attack with a lot of extra damage and a huge boost in sc (or Sour rage in my case.) Also ocassionally an enemy would take the oportunity to try to counter, when they do, the circle switches to red, and you must press the secondary button instead of primary to continue with the combo, otherwise they counter and basic attack you for dmg.

If possible I would absoloutly LOVE this system. Now I have posted a link to a youtube video bellow that demonstraits the system. However, it has extra spiffy stuff like cool animations and stuff for the attack (not neccissary, its only more work for me to do those animations.) And of course the game is in 3d, not 2d like i will be making mine.

A few more notes about the system:
-Combo's or rather Additions will be attatched to weapons, or armor, so switching them would just mean switching weapon or armor (unless its easier for you to just add a small menu option that allows you to switch which addition you are using (menu would only be available outside of battle.)
- It need to be compatable with the stormtronics menu system.
- This is only for basic attacks NOT magic ones.
- I would need to be able to make up new combos (this means setting how many times, how fast each time, dmg per addtional strike, and sp for each strike.
- Different classes would have different addition skills.

I really hope this isn't too much, though it does seem rather complicated to me, I'm not a scripter so I dont know. This would just be added on to the soulrage system and default battle system (DBS) that comes with rpg maker.

Script Requests / [XP] Chat Pics.

When engaged in dialouge in a lot of games, the dialogue appears in a box at the bottom of the screen with a little chat arrow thing to a picture of the character speeking, they took this feature out in XP i think it was in 2k3.
I looked all over on the board but cant find a script that adds this feature back in. I even manually went through the entire script database manually. Sorry I cant explain what im talking about better, but i can give you a screen shot of what im talking about, please excuse the content of the dialogue though lol, if you knew what happened previously in the game you would understand, its not as bad as it seems.

Starcraft Territories is an attempt at a Starcraft MMORPG, by ripping the sprites out of starcraft (only the ones needed for 8 way run) of several key units we (an irl friend of mine and I) hope to create a starcraft mmo. Our current plan is to use netplay script to do so. We have many features planned for it, and are filled with brilliant ideas on what the project should be like.

We would like to have players chose an alliance (terran or protoss) and then have npc baddies as the zerg, the idea is that each alliance controls a territory permanently, and all other maps/territories are up for grabbs by player factions, or npc factions.

The terran desire to control the zerg overmind and thus the zerg themselves, and the protoss want them destroyed. The world takes place on a planet absoloutly infested with zerg, and only a few areas are in fact free of them, and those areas are where camps have been made, and with only 1 major city for each playable faction. Things get even more interesting when I say that this will all be done using the Bliz ABS, on map combat system yay!

We have already figured out by using events how to let territories be captured so that is taken care of.

The major job is to rip the sprites from the game, including buildings, once the nidus canal has been ripped we can add underground lvls to the game.

The number of people for each job depends on what exactly we do in the end.
I am personally doing a few things, ideas, im attempting to find preripped sprites constantly, I will do any event scripting I can, I hate tile work but I will be combining a few pallets that we are gonna need for the game. I will also be searching for preexisting scripts. Pretty much the only thing i wont be assisting with is the actual scripting of the game's mechanics.

The name of the game isn't actually set yet, it just sounded nice when i went to go make the topic.

Not using dragoon because they look more like vehicles, mounts=vehicles, it just increases your movement speed and changes your img while you are in them, some like the reever might have weapons. Obviously not all units would be playable because they wouldn't have to follow the same rules as others, and thus only ground units that meet certain requirements can be played as, all others are either vehicles, pets or npcs of some sort.
All of this is up for debate and discussion between those involved in the project. A forum will be created to discuss this project assuming this project gets attention enough to be worth continuing.

Script Requests / Just an Interesting Idea

The thought just kinda came to me, and this is less of a request as it is a project for someone who is bored (considering i personally probably wouldn't actually use it very often if at all.)

In some older games you could walk into a house on the map without the use of teleporters or rather changing maps, the roof would just seem to cease to exist, and you would get an x-ray of what is going on inside and still be able to see a bit of the outside too, with the house now just being centered. Sure you would have to have two pallets or one pallet that included inside and outside of an area but it would be neat to be able to recreate this feel.
If anyone knows what i mean, feel free to elaborate cause off the top of my head i cant remember any names of games that did this but i know some did, so i cant really provide examples.

The reason this couldn't really be done easily without script is cause of the roof to room transformation thing.

Script Requests / Multi Palets

This is something that I have wanted for a long time, but before now I could only think of doing it through making an omni-palet (giant mapping thingy that has all the enviornments on it.)

That takes a lot of work though, and is inconvienent (admittedly though, not too hard.) So just now i went and looked up some details on the newest rpgmaker, the graphix looked... well the mapping graphix any way, they looked atrocious. So i was thinking, what if someone where to make it as if a map had multiple pallets. After all its just pixles right?
What I am thinking is that if someone could make rpmxp maps have multiple enviornment pallets by tabbing between them for the map, without changing the map's current paint job it would be perfect (think tab a,b,c,d and then you switch between them to grab your mtns or your grass, or style A house, or style b house.
I can understand how this would be hard, because by the looks of things, the way the pixles are called on is by the map being given a reference number that tells it which pallet to select, then each square on the map has a separate reference number that says which square of the pallet to check.
It sounds like the best soloution to this would be to combine it, to where each square would be given a longer reference number, say 3 values?

The first value representing which pallet to go to, the second representing which square on the pallet to go to, and the third telling the square what it's reference number is.
The only major problem i can forsee would be compatiblility issues, it might have to rewrite the game engine instead of just script, and this might cause a bit of lag.
But you are the scriptors not me, and so I would assume you know better than I, and that i might indeed be totally wrong on how it works.
If it cant be done, i guess its no biggy, but I think it would make people's projects easier.

Alright, so in the first part of this post I will quickly sum up what I want, if you still find yourself interested in the complicated task I am requesting, please go on to the details, and finally the benifits of doing this.

I'm requesting this for RXP, but if someone could provide me with a link to an english full version of rpgVX for free, i would be glad to use it for that instead/as well if you prefer scripting for it.

I need a very Summon Knight like ABS. Side scrolling, weapons that are held are exchangeable but separate from the sprites of the attacks.
It would need an Hp bar for each enemy  and character around 4-6 enemies is the most i will probably need.) An mp bar for each enemy and character, and a weapon durability bar for each character and enemy (only bosses would actually have it.)
A weapon switching option (think about setting up 2-4 weapons in slots before the battle, and then being able to switch between those select ones in mid battle at any moment, preferably without bringing up a menu or interupting the battle.)
I would like but this is not 100% necissary to have: A character switching option (think marvel vs capcom 2, press a button and characters switch out, or preform an attack that would be prechosen before the battle in some form of menu.
It would need a pause function.
This wouldn't be anything like the actual game exploration, this is just the battle system. The thing still gets into random-esk battles on the normal game map, it just does the whole transition screen to what you will hopefully be creating.
Circle shadows underneith the characters if possible. I am not sure if this is just a sprite thing, but it might not be.
It needs to be compatable with scripts blacksmith type scripts (ones that allow you to create your own weapon.
THIS IS NOT A SUMMON KNIGHT FAN-SEQUEL, This is an entirely different project, I just happen to be in love with their battle system.
The good the bad and the ugly:
Good:
1. You make an awesome battle system that you take full credit for (excluding the sprites that myself and others would create of course, but if you decide to do some beond stick figures assuming you decide to present a demo pic or vid those are your work of course)
2. You make me very happy, because I have done months of searching and found nothing
3. You become part of a long and painful project, that will in the end produce an awesome game or two.
Bad:
1. It will probably take you some time.... a lot of time.
2. There will probably be many bugs to work out.
3. I cant pay you in any valid form of official currency
Ugly:
1. Me if I cant ever get someone to make this, or at least I'll be a sad boy.

I am fully aware this is my first post, I am fully aware this is a complicated request, but first post does not mean i have little prior exp with RXP, actually I have been working with it for a few years now. I just suck a scripting.
