Title: ~Fading Twilight~ INTRODUCTION / SIGN-UPS
Post by: WhiteRose on August 29, 2013, 10:36:30 pm
Fading Twilight

Many hundreds of years ago, the grand arch-mage Azeash read a prophecy among the stars. He spoke of a gathering evil that would be unleashed upon the world. The public dismissed him in scorn, thinking that he had been driven mad by his magic. With a final warning, he disappeared, and was never heard from again. This incident was soon forgotten, until one night, when they came - the Shade.
No one knew their origin. In the beginning, no one even knew of their arrival, until it was far too late. Any record kept of the catastrophe or the nature of the Shade has long been destroyed, but the destruction was unmatched. The world surely would have been doomed were it not for the brave actions of six heroes, who managed to fight back the impending darkness.

One hundred and fifty years have passed since that day. There are those who still remember the legends. Indeed, among the elves and the Dwarven Elders, there are even those who witnessed such events first hand. In the eyes of the common people, however, these ancient happenings are of little consequence, being little more than an excuse for the mid-winter festival. With the end of the destruction came a new beginning. The barriers between the three races of the world - men, elves, and dwarves - were lowered in an attempt to rebuild, and harmony strong anew in the world. Trade flourished, kingdoms were rebuilt, and  peace reigned. In time, mortal imperfections such as greed or envy worked their way back into reality, but not enough to corrupt the spirits of this new dawn. The world was at rest.

It is the winter of the year 150 ND. Having completed his mid-day meal, King Perhin rose from his seat at the grand dining table, and, trailed by his guards and servants, returned to the throne-room, where he sat with a sigh, massaging his temples. It had been a long day. The winter festival had concluded only yesterday; though the King enjoyed the festival as much as anyone else - indeed, there were rumors that he himself had taken place in the games and festivities, though the King assured that he was the only one who knew with certainty that these were true - the stretch of time from the end of the festival to the spring was a dreary one. Already, the youth in the city were starting to get out of hand, bored from being free from another season of work on the farms. Bored youth led to crime and vandalism, and who knew what else.... To top it all off, there had even been rumors of a dragon sighting in the mountains to the north.
The king frowned as he saw a messenger, escorted by a guard, hurry into the room. No doubt another report of a stolen cow or scattered chicken coop, he thought glumly. When his eye caught the wax seal upon the envelope, however, he sat up abruptly. The Tower of Magi almost never formally communicated with those outside of their order, but this was undoubtedly their seal - a hand with an open flame burning in the palm, stamped on deep blue wax. He hastily tore the envelope open, cursing as he cut his finger on the thick parchment in his rush. The message was short. It began,

"A prophecy has been seen among the stars...."

Creating Your Character

A few notes about creating a character: Though there will definitely be plenty of room for humor, this RP does generally have a slightly more serious tone than, for example, Captain Pimp. As you create your character, do keep in mind that others may be expecting a slightly different playstyle than you, so try not to choose anything that is exceedingly disrupting to either the environment or other players. (For example, a character named Batman who spends his time streaking through the public wailing at the top of his lungs  would probably not be the best choice.)

Name: Choose any name that you think fits your character. It might help to think of this after considering your other choices so as to choose something fitting.
Gender: Male/Female. Though I recommend playing as a character of your own gender so as to better relate to your character and their situation, this is not required, so feel free to play as any character you think you would give you an enjoyable gameplay experience.
Race:
The Races of Fading Twilight: ShowHide

There are three sentient races harmoniously sharing the world. You are welcome to play as any of them. Each race has their own unique ability, and a detriment - please pay attention to the abilities of even races that you are not playing as, as even non-player characters of these races will possess these abilities. Also please note that these are not statistical advantages, but rather implications as to the nature of these races - for example, one could role-play as a naturally cautious and graceful human if they so chose, despite the description of the human race below stating that humans in general often act otherwise.

1. Humans - known for their quick adaptability, determination, and ability to turn almost any environment into a thriving community, as well as for generally being the most diplomatic of the three races. Humans are the shortest lived of the three races. Though the three races were once equal, the coming of the Shade affected the dwarves and elves more so than the humans - ever since, humans have been the most populous race by a significant margin.

  • Special Ability: The Human Spirit - through sheer determination of will, humans are able to grit their teeth through the pain and survive what would normally put an end to their existence. Note that this means that they have only a small edge over the other two races; this does not affect something such as having your head sliced off, falling into boiling lava, or similar instances where death is inevitable.

  • Detriment: Hasty - generally speaking, humans tend to be slightly rash and act on impulse, causing them to be just slightly less coordinated in matters of finesse than other races.

    2. Dwarves - folders and shapers of nature, dwarves once kept to themselves within the deep halls of their home within the eastern mountains. Now, however, though the Kingdom Under the Mountain remains, it has become common to see members of this stocky and usually bearded race travelling the roads, looking for inspiration for their trade or perhaps even just getting to know the world from which they had been closed off for so long. Dwarves live slightly longer than humans, by a ratio of about 1.5.

  • Special Ability: Artisan - dwarves have a natural eye for fine materials, and are thus more apt at crafting items and equipment, ranging from makeshift weapons to fine masterpieces. They are also typically able to get a better price when buying or selling items, due to being able to recognize the build quality of items.

  • Detriment: Magic-impaired - dwarves don't have much of a knack for the arcane, and typically prefer to stay away from the art. There have been, however, quite a few dwarven mages in the past, showing that, though difficult, such a role is not impossible.

    3. Elves - unlike the dwarves, the elves do not shape nature to their will, but instead embrace the will of nature itself. They are typically slightly shorter than humans, though only by a few inches, and are often identified by their pointed ears. Elves are a merry people, known for their unique flavors of music, food, and clothing. Like the dwarves, they once kept themselves hidden from the world. Unlike the dwarves, they were more tentative when it came to opening up after the coming of the Shade; it is not uncommon to see the occasional elf in a public establishment, as a large part of the race are trying to put old discriminations behind them and embrace unity, but there is also a large portion of elves who choose to remain in their forest homes. Elves live about four times longer than humans, but their maturity is not by the same ratio - they mature about twice as slowly, and simply live longer. (For example, an elf who is 40 would be about 20 in human years, but rather than living until about 180, they live to be about 350.)

  • Special Ability: Elven grace - elves are typically lithe and swift, and have a knack both for moving quickly, as well as avoiding fatigue during long travels.

  • Detriment: Resentment - it is truly hard to get rid of the last vestiges of racism that have been passed down for so long. Elves often have initial trouble trusting those of other races, though they are still able to build up strong friendships with time.

    4. Mixed Race - though uncommon, it is possible to have family members from different races, resulting in a unique person with traits from multiple races. Before the first coming of the Shade, mixes races were virtually unheard of, but they are becoming increasingly common today. Please PM me if you would like to play as a mixed race, and we will work things out so that you can play in the way that you would like.

Age: Choose the age of your character, keeping in mind the difference between the races. (if you are a dwarf, for example, take the human-relative age that you would like to be, and times it by 1.5. For an elf, times by 2.)
Class:
The Classes of Fading Twilight: ShowHide
Please note that Fading Twilight does not have a strictly enforced class system. However, choosing a class does help to give others a good idea of the type of character that you would like to play. You are not at any time "stuck" to your class, so, for example, a warrior would be able to experiment with magic, though they would likely have little experience with it and would struggle with it much more than someone who showed that they have a background with magic by choosing mage as a class instead. Also note that your class does not completely define your character. For example, someone could have a background as a farmer, and role play as a farmer (maybe you're in it for the Harvest Moon experience or something, I guess,) and still choose any of the classes below simply as a way of describing how they would react in combat should it happen.

Warrior - one who prefers their combat the "old-fashioned" way. There are a variety of warriors with their own unique and distinctive styles, but they generally prefer the use of traditional weapons and armor and direct combat rather than alternatives.
Rogue - ranging from thieves to special agents to simply those with a knack for remaining unheard and unseen, rogues prefer to stay out of sight and out of mind. In a combat situation, rogues prefer to take a strategic route rather than duke things out man-to-man.
Cleric - though hitherto unmentioned, there are true gods in the world, both of good and of evil. These gods hear the prayers of their followers, and answer according to their faith. One does not have to have had formal clerical training to choose Cleric as their class.
Mage - there are two types of mages: those who dabble in magic, and actual mages. Magic is a difficult art, and it requires a lifetime of study. Though consistent use and study of magic is the only way to become truly skilled, such use takes a toll on one's physical health. Because of this there are few who even dabble in the arcane realms, and there are very, very few who choose to wholeheartedly practice the art. Those who do choose to devote themselves to magic have only a single choice for their training - a lifetime of study at the Tower of the Magi. If someone would like to play as a full-fledged mage, PM me, and I'll give you more details.

Please note that you are not restricted to these classes! If you feel that there is something else that more accurately describes your character in a single word or phrase, please go ahead and use that as your class. This means that unlisted classes, such as Bard, Paladin, Barbarian, Assassin, Archer, or whatever else comes to mind, are perfectly fine! On that note, if you really are going to play as a farmer as I used for my previous hypothetical example, (unlikely, but you never know,) you're welcome to simply choose "Farmer" as your class. Feel free to leave additional description if necessary, though there will also be room for that in the background section.

Physical Appearance: Feel free to be as detailed or non-detailed as you'd like, whether it just be a brief description or getting all the way into details such as height in inches, weight, and so on. Do try and give enough detail that others can picture your character. Generally speaking, the more detail, the better!
Background / Profession : Be as creative as you'd like here. Make your character who you really want them to be! If you're not sure about any details, please PM me, and I'll help you to work things out. As for a profession, if you have one, feel free to list it here as part of your background.
Personality: Who is your character as a person? If you don't want to give too many details, that is alright, but do at least let others know what type of person your character will be.
Unique Talent: Again, here is your time to be creative. Choose a non-supernatural special ability that you would like your character to have. Choose something that will be useful and set you apart from others, but nothing that is too powerful. This should probably be related to your background. For example, if you are a dwarven metalsmith, perhaps you would have the ability to reforge swords and armor to be even stronger.
Other: anything else that you want me or other players to know.

Post by: Vell on August 30, 2013, 06:58:39 pm
Name: Alfred Blackwood
Gender: Male
Race: human
Age: 25
Class: Warrior
Physical Appearance: A man who is only slightly taller than average, Alfred Blackwood carries himself with a confident stride. Thick shoulders and powerful arms crossed with old scars and new ones match his strong legs. Still, his strong face and slightly wavy golden hair match his dark eyes and sun-darkened complexion to the point that he may appear moderately attractive.
Background / Profession : Alfred claims to have been a nobleman in his younger years - before his twelfth year, he claims, when he and his family were put out as exiles for the petty schemes of an opposing family - but there is little to prove this as nobody can match his claimed family name to any noble house. Instead, his comfortably deadly confidence and the ease with which he holds sword and spear tell a lifelong tale of bloodshed.
Personality: A cunning intelligence is hidden under his gruff exterior. While he is warm and kind to those he is able, those who speak to Alfred Blackwood for any length of time become aware of the suspicion cut into his bones.
Unique Talent: Alfred has a knack for reading political currents he claims comes from the teaching he received as a child of nobility.
Other: He is actually just a lowborn man who became a mercenary to make ends meet and realised that politics was as a game.

Awesome. :) This is shaping up to be a really great RP! I'll give people a little bit more time to sign-up, but I'll probably begin the RP later tonight in a few hours.

EDIT: Of course, people are welcome to join even after the RP has begun.

Spoiler: ShowHide

Name: Azimuth
Gender: Male
Race: Elf
Age: 37
Class: Battlemage

Physical Appearance: It is clear that Azimuth is not used to strenuous, outdoor physical activites; he is not particularly muscled, has a little bit of fat and his skin is rather light, though not pale. Apart from that, he looks like a regular elf, with pointy ears, a long face and blue eyes. However, unlike many elves, he is rather tall, even for human standards. The clothes he wears are pretty plain and not exceptionally interesting, as he wears the characteristic blue robe of the Tower of Magi. He also wears a ring with a red unidentified gem, which is the only remnant he has of his parents.

Background/Profession: Having been abandoned by his parents in the forest when he was still a baby, carrying only a ring with a red gem, this foundling was found by a group of magicians from the Tower of Magi. There, he was raised as a magician. He was named Azimuth, for it was customary for younglings found by the magicians of the Tower to be given names which found their origins in scientific terminology. Not having all too much to do, he heavily focused on his studies of natural sciences and magic. He's fully aware of the negative impact the magic has on his body, but as he was born and raised in the Tower of Magi, he doesn't really know better than this life. Besides, he sees the Tower as his home and the inhabitants as his family. He wouldn't have it any other way. Also, he secretly hopes his magical endeavours will eventually somehow lead him to his biological parents. He got this belief at a very young age, though he doesn't know where it came from, and has never since shared it with anyone, feeling it might ruin what he has come to see as a prophecy.

Though he is still young according to elfern standards, he has spend every year of his life studying hard. It's difficult work, but he doesn't mind, as he actually enjoys studying. In fact, he hardly ever leaves the Tower and has never traveled far from it, for the farther he traveled, the more homesick he got and the badlier he wanted to return to the certainty of his studies. That's why his magical capabilities are above standard for someone his age, although they are very minor compared to those of some of the elderly mages living in the Tower of Magi. Due to his rapid learning, his friends gave him the nickname Zenith a long time ago, for he used to rise above most of them, although by now he has made new ones far more powerful than himself. Nobody except for his best friend is still aware of this old nickname and even he seems to have forgotten about it. Lately he decided to spend some of his spare time on training in swordmanship, for he did not want to fully rely on magic in case something unforeseeable happened. Although he has slowly been improving, he's still not capable of defeating even the weakest goblin without the help of his magic. This partially has to do with the negative impact the magic has on his body, as well as his lack of natural gracefulness and talent for swordfighting.

Personality: Azimuth likes to think a lot. This helps him with his studies, but is also his biggest downfall. He tends to drift away, even at times when he has to pay attention, and he tends to overcomplicate and -analyze things. Apart from that, he is what some people like to call "a little selfish". It's not that he doesn't care about other people or that he ruins the environment he lives in, but he doesn't make an all too active attempt to improve it either. That being said, he would not intentionally hurt anyone or get in anyone's way, especially when it concerns a friend. He is aware of this slight selfishness, but thinks it wouldn't be so bad if people could take care of themselves. He thinks this may be caused by his being alone often, not having any family apart from his fosters, despite his seeing the inhabitans of the Tower as family members, but believes he may have been overanalyzing that as well. Also, having been raised amidst people from all races, he doesn't have any prejudice against any of them and is not burdened by resentment of them. The Tower of Magi, its inhabitants and the red ring he was found with are the things he holds most dear to him and he would risk anything to protects those, even his life, as those are the only certainties he has about his otherwise uncertain past. He has trouble dealing with this uncertainty and often resorts to the sureness of his studies to take his mind off things.

Unique talent: Having studied his entire life, he knows a lot about the world he lives in; from the laws even nature has to abide to what kind of creatures live in this world, athough he's mainly interested in their intelligence, lifestyles abd how to defeat those creatures in combat rather than how their biology works. He's often applauded due to his broad spectrum of interests. Also, in order to help him with his swordfighting, he has learned how to enchant his weapons, a skill only few are interested in learning, for magicians generally prefer to fight with only their magic rather than physical weapons.

Other: This character actually resembles myself in various ways - with a few exceptions of course; for instance, I was raised by my biological parents, unlike Azimuth. Some personality traits were made up as well in order to fit the backstory. As for his name, refer to this picture for its meaning

Also, as is clearly visible on the picture, the zenith is the point in the sky directly above your head, thus higher than any other point.

I added a few snippets of information to the tekst, WR, so feel free to skim through the tekst again.

Looks awesome, SBR. :) I'll get the first post up in a couple of hours so that we can start! :D

Edit: Sorry for taking so long. New characters keep tricking in, which is fantastic! I do think that, one way or another, we'll probably start sometime very soon for sure. Sorry again for the wait; I know that people are excited to get started.

Name: Angel PhoenixFire
Gender: Female
Race: Elven/Human
Age: 25
Class: Rogue

Physical Appearance: Her appearance is mostly human in nature, although she does possess the pointed ears of her mother's side of her family. Long, flowing blonde hair, and fair skin, she is in many ways passable as a human girl, and usually wears her hood up to cover her ears. She is physically fit, though not remarkably by any stretch. She has blue-green eyes, which seem to be a rarity amongst the races nowadays, though she has heard stories that this is because three of the original six heroes had blue-green eyes, and as a tribute to their valor, that colouring is only bestowed by the Gods of Light upon those who are to become heroes.

She is around the average height for a normal human, and slightly slender, again, compared to human standards. Her general, customary choice for clothing is rather simple; She favors a brown leather aumuse over a plain linen shirt. She rarely wears them, but she possesses a pair of leather hand gauntlets, leather shin guards, and her fathers' old helmet. She crafted her own longbow and arrows, and carries them around with her constantly. The only other constant item for her wardrobe is a medium sized side bag that she carries around a variety of healing herbs in.

Decent visual for what I'm kind of basing her on. (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-aS_Ga0a45u4/T2XIS4WxcLI/AAAAAAAACro/BkkHVGMi3hI/s1600/Snow+Elf+Girl+with+Lion.jpg)

Background/Profession: Angel was raised by her Elven mother after her human father was killed by bandits, and although raised in the ways of the Elves, she was taught the ways of the Human race as well. As such, she is able to pass as either a human or Elven-kin, and is accepted by both races with open arms. There are those that would hate her for her dual lineage, however, and she is constantly harassed by these people. As she grew older, she set off on her own into the world to make her own way through life, and ended up stumbling upon a roaming Mage, who taught her some of the basics of the arcane. She by no means mastered majick, but she did perfect her ability to conceal herself completely, bending the shadows to hide her, along with the trees, plants, and flowers. She eventually parted ways with him, and continued her own studies. She became somewhat of a loner, and had a small house on the edge of a small village, and operated a small business as a herbal healer.

Personality: Because of the lingering negativity against her lineage, she is a shy, withdrawn individual, and tries to avoid other people when she can. She still wishes that those legends were true, about her eyes being the colour of heroes, but the more time that goes by, the less she believes in it. Although shy, when she is around people she knows well enough, she has been witnessed to be rather bubbly and cheerful; very positive and uplifting to be around.

Unique talent: Has not been realized yet (probably going to be an ability based on her race)

Other: Nothing yet. This will be added to over time I think.

I hope this works out fine... Though now I'm unsure if Elven culture works this way D:

Spoiler: ShowHide
Name: Sofia Winters
Gender: Female
Race: Elf
Age: 33
Class: Mage

Physical Appearance: Sofia's black hair contrasts with her pale skin and blue, creating a striking face that presents all manner of emotions upon it. Her hair is usually let out and as long as her shoulders, but occasionally held towards one side by means of a navy ribbon. Around her neck is a clasp with the insignia of House Winters - an owl on a tree, eyes open even in the light blue of a midday sky - that holds in place the traditional blue robe of the Tower of Magi. She is somewhat chubby, and her shirt is a plan white, over leggings that are dyed a pitch black. Her feet are covered in simple black shoes, and on her right hand is a silver ring adorned with a small sapphire.

When outside the safety of the tower, a sheathe on her left hip holds House Winter's ancestral sword, Azura. The weapon is single edged and slightly curved, tapering into a tip about two and a half feet from the crossguard. The crossguard is coated in a deep blue enamel, the same colour as the sapphire that makes the blade's pommel. The underside of the crossguard has the weapon's name engraved twice, while its grip is made of simple, light blue dyed cloth. Its sheathe is a similar light blue, with a cross being formed on either side with suspicious navy ribbons.

Background/Profession: The firstborn of House Winters's life was set from birth. A home and a bed and a family. Her own private tutoring by some of the greatest elven sages on the land's histories and studies on some playwright's greatest tragedies. How to keep a household and how to manage their economic affairs. Battle tactics. Battle skills. Art, surgery, science, and first aid. The magic to bend the world to the whim of House Winters. The education to lead the family to a prosperous future.

But as she aged, it was apparent that much of the work was for naught. Although House Winters had invested a small fortune of time and money on the education of their daughter, and young Sofia seemed to have the will to push herself, those around her would come to realise she had no internal talent. Her swordfighting was fair, she had a flair for music, and could recite the tactics of some of the world's most decisive battles, but for all purposes Sofia was not one to lead. No one could see a flourishing House Winters underneath Miss Sofia. Fortunately, they did not need to, for a brother to Sofia was born and, realising her own inadequacy, renounced her birthright of House Winters. She would learn and grow. Marry into another house, as a woman would otherwise be expected to do.

Still finding the supplied education inadequate, Sofia found herself at the Tower of Magi. Perhaps there, she thought, she would learn better...

Personality: Sofia is a young woman with an unbreakable will. She will try and try and try until she succeeds with whatever it is she does. A smile is always printed on her face, and the self-confidence it gives her radiates out to all who know her. She is kind and outgoing, but is somewhat suspicious around large groups of people and those she find too forward towards her. And yet, despite this, sometimes she would find her confidence faltering and those around her unhelpful. Sometimes, the only company she needs or wants is the company of herself.

Unique Talent: A keen tactical mind. Sofia can think fast and understands how to undermine a foe in battle, and has a theoretical understanding for larger strategy. However, oftentimes Sofia finds herself without sufficient strength and speed to execute her plans.

Other: Although a student of the Tower of Magi for a year, Sofia has trouble casting the most basic of spells. It doesn't mean she won't try, however.

Looks fantastic! Thanks for joining us. I know I've said this about three times lately, but this time, really, for sure, we will be starting today, so I'll try and have the first post up as soon as possible. I apologize again for being so busy; the new school semester is just starting, so there's a lot to get set up!
