Recruitment / Re: [XP] Shalaren Metropolis
March 26, 2011, 12:01:03 am
The story seems interesting. Although there's some open ends such as why magic is forbidden, and why the gate in the sky is created. You could easily bridge these two ideas. I have a few suggestions:
*the gate is created through a violent clash of magic in a bloody war. after the gate is sealed, magic is outlawed, and survives only two a few secret practitioners.
*a mage with lust for power opens a portal to the underworld. chaos ensues. this seems more cliche though.

The last part of the story has a lot of details that are excessive. some contradictions. also a lot of cliches...

A strange mark was left in the sky after closing of the gate, and shalaren's energy was starting to wear off and the six saints knew they had to do something in order to prevent the gate from again, and so performed a spell to seal the gate and shalaren's energy inside a tree, a tree located in the center of the metropolis in order to protect it, and the six saints sealed away their powers as well in order to protect the metropolis from themselves, but their power wasn't sealed inside a tree, it was sealed in a rock, a crystal they called "The Silent crystal" and the only way of reaching what inside the crystal is by naming all of the six saints, but the names are unknown, they are crafted into a crown, in which the king's metropolis will wear.

The sealing of powers in a tree is straight from secret of mana... also i can't see how names of six saints  could be forgotten in a thriving metropolis established by them, unless they cast a spell of forgetfulness. i would condense and alter the ideas of the last paragraph, heres a suggestion.

To prevent the gate from ever being opened again the magic knowledge of the six saints is confined by them to a (crystal/tree). However, one of them had decided that in case magic is ever needed again, the enchantment for release of the powers should be recorded. And so, being a close friend of the king, he inscribed it on the crown, which he knew is passed down through successive kings.

Well those are my two cents, and I'm just trying to help. BTW, I like the art design. Did you make those sprites yourself?

Just bumping this topic to let people know that I am still actively working on this game.

I'm only on my netbook, so I can't post any screenshots, but I'll try to remember to take a few and post them when I get back from classes today.

That is good to hear. How far along is the project? Would be cool if you could post some screens...
Best of luck, anyways.

General Discussion / Re: Skill Games

If muscle memory is trained reaction to external stimuli, then so are these so called skill games.
Regardless if you face a human opponent, you would still use and build your "skillset" for that game to adapt to the new stimuli. Basically any game you'd play, whether it'd be a short pre-programmed game like Mario or a game where you adapt to circumstance of opponent, it's based on your ability to learn to respond to stimuli to produce desired feedback. This is like comparing playing the piano to boxing. You'd could be called skilled at either because you're brain is better at responding to stimuli and feedback of either the sound the piano makes when you hit the keys or the dodging and throwing of punches to avoid pain and deal blows to your opponent. You'd be called skilled because you're better trained to respond to the specific stimulus than someone who's never done it.

What about story? That is not trained response, at least not as simple as that. Gameplay could be fun and addictive but to me it's a good (or really bad) story that leaves a lasting impression.

Edit: Reygekan you were making a good point, but it lost substance in semantics. But I see and agree with the thing about challenge of gameplay. Adaptation of play style would really make a game stand out, unless of course it totally detracted from other aspects such as story or atmosphere.

Script Requests / Re: Different charset script

If you are using Blizz-ABS, you can do this already. Use idle animation sprites as the standing pose, and the 4 walking sprites, for just the walk animation. This is what I'm doing in my game.

If you are not using Blizz ABS, I must refer you to an HBGames thread: link (just add .org to the links there). GIYF.

Was pretty fun, but I had to quit at the last level, couldn't beat it.

If you are looking for atmospheric Metro 2033 and Stalker are supposed to be good, and another is Dead Space. I haven't gotten around to trying those yet, tho.

Might also want to consider Crysis or Bioshock if you haven't played those yet. Crysis especially has engaging atmosphere, good story and gameplay.

Surprised no one's mentioned any old school Disney cartoons. Chip n' Dale, Tale Spin, Gummi Bears, Duck Tales... I enjoyed these a lot as a small kid.

Also liked Animaniacs, MiB animated series, Ren and Stimpy, DBZ...

I get the same problem all the time. I've noticed if either the 2nd or 3rd layer is passable, the whole square is treated as passable. It could be you have used the 2nd or 3rd layer as a fill of a passable tile.

I'm only guessing, but I think it's the "$BlizzABS = BlizzABS::Processor.new" that resets some variables...

Well it's all subjective anyway. I've played a few Pokemon and Zelda games, and only managed to finish one from each series (Pokemon Red and Wind waker). The argument for gameplay value is a good one, but for me personally, story and narrative is the determining factor.

So just because a game is story centered, it's okay if the gameplay is crap?  My point wasn't that games should be all gameplay and nothing else.  Rather, it was that people are focusing so much on developing the story and the graphics that they are forgetting about developing the gameplay as well.  There's no reason that a game can't have everything polished.

No argument there. I'm just saying the story should be the main focus, otherwise, there's not much point.

Sorry for double post - half asleep.

Edit: Just a side note: skill and reflexes are more involved in fps games. The bottom line is, for a Role playing game the role has to be convincing and engaging. I wouldn't skim through a crappy story for the gameplay, if the story is supposed to be the center piece.

I have to disagree. What made the classic RPGs good is the story and characters. CT and FF7 are considered classics, and they had awesome and engaging stories. Later renditions of FF series are just badly repeated cliches, shallow characters (FFX is a great example, as every character seemed mentally handicapped), or poorly grounded story ideas (FF8). These games were also new and fresh. They were not cliches.

Puzzles were more in the NES era games. When I play an RPG it's primarily because I'm into the story. There are puzzle games and there are RPGs...

Passing Through Walls?: ShowHide
One night, a man & his wife are going for a cross-country drive when the car they're driving went out of control in a corn field. It crashed to a tree & damaged the car enough that it won't be able to run again. Fortunately, both were safe. The man decided to go somewhere nearby to ask for help. To make sure that his wife will be safe, he rolled up the windows & locked the doors & the trunk/compartment.

A few hours later, he returns. To his surprise, he found his wife bloody & lifeless inside the car. The doors were still locked & no windows were destroyed. Inside was someone he has never seen before.

How did the woman die? Who is the killer?

Creepy puzzle... I wasn't able to solve it on my first try... Maybe someone here can? :haha:

The man realized his wife had autonomous control and she must've opened the door for the killer, who locked it again so she would not escape. Or the guy had a duplicate key. The woman died from blood loss. The killer is whoever is in the car.

Academics / Re: More Physics - A Vector Problem
September 24, 2010, 04:08:03 pm
I'm not sure I get it, the x is acceleration and y is velocity? Might be easier to imagine two graphs, one for acceleration vs time, one for velocity vs time.
I think you would have to plugin 3 for t and solve for m/s and m/s^2, somehow. But m/s^3 is like double acceleration, I've never seen that before. Or I'm confused with something else...
That's always the problem with questions that rely on being able to answer the preceding. Being able to get the magnitude you need to do the complex math beforehand. Lol, I would've skipped that question as soon as I've seen it...
