Title: Gmail on Opera
Post by: Blizzard on April 11, 2013, 07:10:02 am
Do any Opera users here have been having problems recently with Gmail? Well, I have. Often I get connection problems for no reason. If I use another browser, it works fine. After googling around a bit, I found out that it's most probably Gmail's fault. And then I had an idea. What if they are doing this on purpose? Even though it doesn't really make much sense to annoy the niche of Opera users, it's not impossible. So I experimented a bit with the settings on Opera and masked it to appear as Chrome. And guess what: It works a lot better now. :/

If you want to do the same, it's not complicated. First close Opera. Now open this file:
%SYSTEMDRIVE%\Users\%USERNAME%\AppData\Roaming\Opera\Opera\operaprefs.ini
Under [User Prefs] add (or edit if already there):
Custom User-Agent=Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1) AppleWebKit/537.11 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/23.0.1271.95 Safari/537.11
Under [User Agent] add (or edit if already there):
Spoof UserAgent ID=4

There are a few variants on the user agent (e.g. Windows NT 6.1 is Windows 7 and Windows NT 6.2 is Windows 8), but generally you don't need to bother with those.

Now Gmail will think that you are connecting with Chrome and stop discriminating your Opera browser.

I've never had issues with GMail and Opera at all. But I do notice that Google sites in general run a lot better on Chrome. I'll try this trick out and see if I get any better results.

I've been having problems only in the recent weeks. A few years back there was that CTRL+C issue where you couldn't properly use copy/paste in Gmail on Opera. But they fixed that in v11 I think.

Check this out:
http://my.opera.com/ODIN/blog/google-browser-sniffing-and-the-open-web

Appearently it's a thing. If you look at the bottom it says
QuoteI've been able to find contacts that have fixed issues and removed the browser sniffing that stopped Opera working on properties such as Orkut, Google Docs, and GMail (mobile specific).

That means it could still be browser sniffing to this day for gmail. :O

if user_agent_string.contains('Opera')
  success = rand(5) == 0;
end

Quick question: Do you Chrome users experience any problems with your browsers when using Facebook?

Nope, but Opera has horrible Facebook support. Constantly having to hit back to go the proper previous page. Not being able to right click popup images. And it acts fairly slow after awhile. It's rather annoying. :/

Not to mention the extra RAM consumption. #_#

I have no problems using sites with Chrome, usually. A while back google had blocked access to cinemassacre.com because they had gotten a malware from and ad.

I've only experienced random crashes in chrome when dealing with flash adverts... Otherwise I have zero problems with it
