Title: New Motherboard vs New Laptop

Let's start out by saying I no longer recommend ASUS as a brand.  The laptop I got was fairly high end and came with a 1 year warranty.  I had a fan fail at 16 months (made a loud noise, but the computer was still usable), and now the motherboard has failed at 19 months.  I can order the replacement motherboard, but I don't think it is worth it to invest the money and wait two weeks for the part to come in, especially if another part fails in another month or two.

I could buy a new laptop, and transfer some of the more interchangeable parts (RAM, SSD, HDD).  I would probably get a more standard configuration for the processor, display, etc., or find something on sale, so it could easily be in the $700 range.  And I could get it fairly quickly as well.

Vote + give me advice.

I've never tried an ASUS laptop, but I'll say that I've actually quite enjoyed my ASUS motherboard over the past two to three years in my last computer, the M5A99X Evo, and once never had an issue with it failing, though this was for a desktop PC and at the time, was a more higher end motherboard. The only other ASUS product I've had was their dual-band router, which I will say, started taking a shit on me two months after the one year warranty, would constantly drop connection, really slow wired speed, and as soon as I switched to an older, weaker router, my issues were gone.

So, I'm still somewhat neutral when it comes to ASUS. I've had one good and one bad product and haven't tried any others, with that in mind, since you already had to replace the fan, and I know you're someone who takes care of their stuff, it sounds like ASUS doesn't do laptops very well. I would probably get a new one. Save yourself the troubles of switching out the motherboard, and then possibly finding out that it's defected. Oh yeah, remember the motherboard I got? Wing (aka Hellfire Dragon, old, old member), ordered the same one and it was defected when he got it and it ruined his CPU. So yeah, totally leaning towards a new one.

Yeah, this laptop really left a sour taste in my mouth.  I always made sure to clean it regularly and cleared the space around it on my desk so it would get unobstructed airflow, and it seems like it didn't even matter.  Meanwhile, I have a 5.5 year old HP laptop that I dragged to and from hundreds of classes, even through multiple Houston downpours, and I've only had to replace the battery and power cord (which is what I am using now).

I'd go for a lenovo instead of replacing the motherboard. Asus is hit or miss on a lot of their products outside the desktop space.

Agreed. I was going to get a monitor from them, but a lot of the reviews left on newegg and amazon, their monitors were defected when received. ASUS replaced them of course, but I don't want to risk having to deal with that.

I have an Asus monitor. It's actually really good. Recently a coworker of mine got an Asus tablet, it power button was fucked out of the box so the it was constantly restarting every 10 to 20 seconds.  It really hit or miss on quality

I have an Asus Vivotab that I use for school, and I love it - it's an 8 inch Windows tablet with a Wacom digitalizer. After reading this, I hope it doesn't fail on me....

I ended up getting it repaired, it only ended up costing $200 (they just had to replace the motherboard).  However, the place I took it to said they repair a lot of ASUS gaming laptops, so apparently they aren't built to last.  Hopefully it lasts me another year, and then I'll get a new laptop.
