General Discussion / Re: my real time animated menu
August 06, 2012, 02:28:33 pm
Well actually that current structure you have seems ok (considering you DO get images on your first window)
what you should watch out for is that the menu doesn't cover a huge area of the screen, especially if you plan
to have most things be menu-accessible,

I guess you could (later in development) add shortcuts?

P.D: Pretty cool-looking map at 0:42 you have ;)

Let me guess. No battle dialogs stretching over 2 episodes / 100 pages? xD

quick DBZ joke:

how many saiyans does it take to change a light bulb?

A: 1 but he will take at least 20+ episodes and an OVA to do so....
and somewhere in the process krillin dies XD

That. No filler arcs, no GT...

same applies to Naruto... what killed me was the excessive amount of fillers done, that I barely remembered what the original thing was about, manga versions of certain anime hopefully are indeed much better paced.

Though in some cases the japanese VAs are just... awkward for the character.

Like, the original DBZ voice actors? I heard them once and I was like... "why does Goku sound like a woman"

weeeellll..... some not all XD

In DBZ's case... believe it or not the latino version did give it more emotion while keeping voices in their
(natural?) pitch.

I prefer subs. I find the out of sync lips far more distracting than the text. If you watch videos with subtitles often enough, its very simple to focus on the show, and kinda just read them out of the corner of your eye. At least that's how it is for me.

actually I'd agree with this, also because (IMO speaking here) subs keep most of the original argument
I'd say what kills off some (not all) anime dubs is that localization, censorship and mistranslations that can
alter and / or cut out critical sections of the whole anime.

aside from that, because subs are also easy to follow (in my case as well) and some of the JP voices are good.

Im pretty sure he came XD

but yeah it's the american localization that tends to censor that sort of things...
(google dian keto the cure master from yu-gi-oh and you WILL notice the difference)

sometimes it's tiny details.... and sometimes it's a complete overhaul.
and other times complete stupid and unnecessary (Im looking at YOU 4kids)

but yeah, localization in a nutshell XD

let's see I spotted...

tetris, kirby (first area looks like green greens) the famous sonic loop.
mario (well at least the star)
Zelda (the dungeon cutscene with the bomb trap)
a bit of gradius (exploding mines)
touhou(?) (last mine attempted what I'd like to call bullet hell mode.)
Final Fantasy (dialogue boxes, menus and such)
Konami (for le Konami code).
MVC3 (Deadpool's special where you grab your own life-bar and smack your opponent with it)(I'm not 100% sure about this one)
Rockman Dash (for the remaining 3D animation in the movie, it is very similat to that of the rockman dash games)

aaand.... those are all I can guess.

This is an interesting one... you see it did taught me stuff I can relate to my career but not social stuffs, well maybe some but not eye-opening ones that make you have sudden changes of heart.

well if you're still interested here goes:

simplify "simplify" : there are many fancy top notch scripts out there for nifty and handy small edits you can do in an rpg maker, there is a 40-50% chance you can event this and compress it.

think outside the box: the tilesets look square-ish, your ideas don't have to.

hope for the best but prepare for the worst: scripts are handy, but it is foolhardy to always expect them to work how you want them right off the bat, always take your time to examine it, tinker values, and possibly save the author of such script writing back for script solutions with a PM.

Still a better love story than twilight? : <=== PROTIP: remember to make your story less sucky THAN twilight! if you got common sense then you shouldn't worry about this.

Stick to the plan! : Very few ideas work right off the bat, always take time to work things according to plans

X. X everywhere! : variables in XP and C# are life savers in complex ideas.

some of these might sound irrelevant to some but... hey it's what XP's taught me.
same goes for real life situations.

In my never ending quest to add life to my cities and towns, I try to make shops a bigger part of gameplay. For example, I reasoned the shopkeepers would meet a lot of people throughout the day, so I include a "rumors" option for them. They can fill you in on local news, provide side quests, and sometimes give you background information to bolster the main plot. In addition, weapon and armor vendors can inform you of the local tough guys (who would frequent these places) and sometimes provide training.

Actually what I once did was... have a town purposely give you crappy items for very huge prices, but if you
decided to actually walk over the counter and talk to the shopkeeper you could get better items by exchanging (not gold) other less valuable items. like... potions at 600 gold, (crappy deal) if you walked over the counter...
you could strike up a bargain of 2 hi-potions for an ether,

also another tip... make a town HATE you XD

You've seen this before, (*cough* FFIV *cough*) a town where shopkeepers either sell you the items at extremely inflated amounts of cash or plain deny you the service of a weaponry & armory (+ inn-keeping if you're really aching for some NPC hate), also have the NPC's either deal damage, place unwanted ailments. and trigger hate cut-scenes XD

just because there's a town in the middle of a world map does NOT necessarily mean it IS a haven with cheap inns and a conveniently placed save spot (if any)

bonus points if by sheer story progress you actually make the town start accepting you, that actually incorporates player bonding which in return adds to comical situations

Entertainment / A (non canon) peanuts cartoon.
June 06, 2012, 01:12:29 am
So I found this very special peanuts cartoon lying around on youtube and could not resist the urge XD

Warning though.... not the sort of peanuts you'd expect... if you know what I mean...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A15v4tTab0Y

done? ok just a a quick relief this was not made by Charles M. Schulz, rather parodied by
Jim Reardon.

but damn who knew deep down Charlie had an epic Arnold Schwarzenegger accent XD

hmm you could also place such "?" or "!" as part of the character sprite.

for example the troll sprites.... you can replace then with your desired character sprite and have room enough
to place the "!" or the "?" next to it, this way not only does your sprite is worth only 1 space (eliminating the I need the upper space issue) you can change his sprites via auto or parallel events to suit your needs.

General Discussion / Re: Screenshot Thread
June 03, 2012, 06:45:51 pm
Ok here's an interactive cutscene screenshot I took...
basically I removed visible tilesets and added walkable invisible ones, then placed a long panorama
and finally replaced the player sprites for crosshairs to give out a fake first person view perspective.

moving the crosshair (player) sprite makes the panorama also move along with it giving it the sense of the player rotating to get a better view.

here's the pic:
Spoiler: ShowHide

also note how in the HUD it says there's oxygen in "deep space" well first of all... no this is not a mistake
if you can put two on two this is basically an in-game spoiler where the player can tell he or she was actually
in a VR simulation all this time. (you can only get this cutscene in one section of the game im working at)

Well here is a sketch I once made at college on my free time... basically I had about 10 index cards with
me that moment and was bored as hell... so I was like "what the heck" and drew this weird idea I had
with me then... it's more of a sketchy idea I had so I dubbed it... index card shorts

warning image might be big so I spoiler-ed it down for the sake of space saving

Welcome! / Re: Hello there.
May 14, 2012, 02:53:17 am
Well I had these pics before it was killed off...

A special skill I made with a chained event, basically it involved laser-blades
and detonation

http://i42.tinypic.com/351zn7o.jpg

once the blades landed, as insult to injury you had them explode.

http://i41.tinypic.com/5cm4nd.jpg
(Note: I got these from printscreen, so they got stuck on the white damage frame)

afterwards an event triggered on the animation , if player had X item with him on the battle after using that skill the animation extends a bit...
http://i44.tinypic.com/33e4t9v.jpg
you are now left with 1 HP. (skill leaves you with 1 HP on purpose)

if you survive an extra turn, you get a hidden skill command (triggered from the previous attack)
http://i43.tinypic.com/iwi4xi.jpg
this is basically a OMGWTFBBQ moment...

seconds later opponents are smashed down with an intense satellite cannon fire, dealing solid 9999
(considering this is a secret skill you can only perform it rarely)
http://i44.tinypic.com/50it2.jpg

I loved doing those animations XD

Welcome! / Hello there.
May 14, 2012, 01:41:40 am
Alright so, I really like rpg maker. (especially XP) but as I went on testing what I can (and cannot)
do with it I ended up realizing I needed to integrate with a community that specializes in RPGXP.

so hello :)

when it comes down to skill with the rpg maker I'd say....

Plot & subplot 6/10
spriting 3/10
mapping 7.5 /10
animation 6/10
eventing 8.5/10
scripting 0.5/10

as you can see I have poor scripting skills (I guess I could consider them null) so to even out my odds I specialize in native rpgxp eventing.
basically if it's a swimming system or field boss battle or complex eventing I can do with, but scripts plain KILL me XD (I'd still love to learn some rubyscripting don't get me wrong ;) after all it's scripters what made XP more interesting that the default systems it has)

mapping I could say is not too shabby (I've gone from sloppy to decent) after all a complex event requires a good map.

any projects?
well I had one.... but it died with megaupload sometime ago.... was sad, and am currently starting it over from scratch,

basically im joining so I can get any questions and doubts out of the way to actually attempt to bring back my project. so yes, pleased to meet you all.
