Title: osu! - rhythm is just a click away

osu!'s official site! Download the game here! (http://osu-me.com)

What is osu!?
osu! is a rhythm game that plays similarly to the Nintendo DS Game "Elite Beat Agents" and "Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan!" You basically 'click' or press circles to the beat while maintaining high life and do well throughout the song. It is rather hard to explain, so Gameplay videos can help:

Sk8er Boi

Zoku

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C3iwST_YrNs (osu! [multiscreen, recorded by mattyu007])
Battle With the Four Fiends

So how do I play?
Move the cursor with your mouse. When the approach circle (A giant ring that gets smaller) is about the same size as the hit-circle, click it. You'll either get a 300, 100, 50, or an X (Self-explanatory). There are certain notes known as sliders as well. To do those, hold the mouse button as the approach circle is the same size as the slider's hitcircle. You then move according to the slider ball. Note that sometimes these sliders repeat! Lastly, there are notes known as spinners. When you see a spinner, spin in circles as fast as you can to net as many bonus points possible.

That's the basics of playing. If you downloaded the game, you probably would get the beatmap osu! tutorial. This helps immensely as well. :P

What makes osu! fun?
The game has an online ranking and a very tight integration with the community. Online scoreboards are there as well. Basically, the more skilled you are, the more you expose yourself, you'll be quite known as a pro. Easier difficulties may be boring, but it's really the more difficult ones that provide a true challenge (Or the ones that are challenges to you already). osu! also has one of the best Taiko simulators around, and there is a 'Falling Fruit' special mode known as 'Catch the Beat'.

Triple Baka!!!

How do I download beatmaps?
You must have a registered account. After you login, go to the Beatmaps link at the navigation bar and select Ranked Beatmaps. Feel free to shuffle through the list to your liking.

I suck at this game a lot. How can I get better?
You may need to check out Beginner's Training and perhaps get better on that.
http://osu.ppy.sh/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=5456

This game is too boring.
Some people don't like certain games. It's just their tastes. If perhaps osu! is boring, maybe you're playing too easy difficulties or you're not challenging yourself at all. Why not get a higher rank? Why not get a #1 at some certain song? Is it because that's impossible? Heck no. If I can get pretty high, then I'm sure you can too after eventual skill. You can play casually as well as a nice relaxing thing to do. Stop when you're frustrated (Do something else, play another song maybe or whatever). It's generally anger that makes people go, "This thing sucks."

I have further questions. Where can I ask?
By all means, feel free to post here or contact me (or another user) on osu!. I recommend you post here or talk to me or another osu! player on this forum as intolerance to ignorance might be around some areas in the site (or chat).

How good are you at osu! ?
I registered during September 22, 2007, but I went inactive until October 30th or so. By now, I'm within the heart of the Top 100 and I have a few new ranked Beatmaps and #1s to boot. (I'm not trying to brag, but it's true...)

If you're an osu! player, feel free to post here. :) I virtually already know who plays and who doesn't, but it's nice to see a few people who aren't there. If you're a player and you're willing to go for a rank sort of thing, I can set up a 'CP scoreboard' here. Just post in your name that you're interested in being here and I'll just amend changes.

Posting in epic thread.

Nice job SRK. A good intro thread, maybe just a bit too much info. XD In any case, people will get a good idea of what the game is about. I reccomend everyone try this and stepmania and see if you like either. Osu would be "better" to get intot hough. It has a great community and a really great beatmap system. Onlien ranking makes you feel great, too.

WcW, actually...

mattyu007 actually got it to work on the Macintosh. Let me show you a link:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z47MKa9Jdwk

I can't promise you it'll totally be the same experience as Windows though. They still need some version of Windows, though according to him...Mmh, or something. But it works. o.o

Oh, and the game is also made on the iPhone / iPod Touch as well. It's on the Cydia store, or whatever you spell that. You need to jailbreak it to get it though.

*sigh* The two copies of XP I have are only work on the computers they were bought with, sadly. So I can't even do that (I have VBox and everything, too)

I bet you're not too concerned or whatever, but I'm just wondering what's up here.

How about try getting osu! to install via the osu-updater?

Place it in an empty directory and run it~

Perhaps it would help if you post up the error here?

And if the error is unfamiliar, you can always post it in Bug Reports within the osu! Forum. There's going to be a new public build sooner or later though...So maybe you can wait on that too. :x

Updating with some news~

1) Per-mode rankings are now available. That means there are rankings for Catch-the-Beat and Taiko as well. (Taiko scores will be reset soon)

2) I am now part of the Beatmap Approval Team in osu! What does this mean? Not only I check to see if beatmaps are awesome enough to get Ranked, I'm also a Forum and Chat Moderator.

And some miscellany:

You know Diokatsu? Yeah, that guy?~ He's a (trying to be) active member of the osu! communities now. Just saying. Plannin' to take it over, nazi style. :V:

What, you can be proud of yourself for your accomplishments but other people can't?  Why shouldn't people want to be good at something.  It's a game, and like anything else, it is more fun if you are more skilled.

We're on an RPG maker forum. I don't anyone with common sense would have pride in being better than the 6 or whatever amount of people who play on here. And no you're wrong. I play rhythm gaming too and the best part isn't being better than others but getting better than you were before. Beating your own scores is much more satisfying than beating someone else.

Also I'm not bragging about osu! or just about anything else. Even Stepmania. I post videos that show me getting better not beating other people. Which is why I'm going to say this again. Don't be concerned with ranks, because YOU know how good you are so that should be enough.
Title: Re: osu! - rhythm is just a click away

And you have no grounds to be telling other people whether or not to compare themselves to others.  Skill is relative: you can either base it off your own previous skill or off of another person's skill.  Or both.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with measuring up to other people, just like there is nothing wrong with measuring up to yourself.  I know you think that you are highly superior to everyone else but you need to realize that nobody is going to worship you for it.
Title: Re: osu! - rhythm is just a click away
Post by: Diokatsu on September 20, 2009, 08:57:03 pm
I fail to see how I could possibly expect anyone to worship me for anything I say on this forum. Truth be told, I doubt anyone really likes me here aside from a select few who know the real me.

Skill measured up to other people is entirely relative, yes. You can't expect to beat other people unless you work hard, and even then other people have their own lives. What if they couldn't play or forgot even? Then how fair is you improvement. not very in my perspective. However, if you only concern your growth against your previous feats, you'll never be caught up in a relative skill comparision. you are always you. Your improvements aren't something relative toi how much you try and how hard you work. It's direct proportion.

I don't feel like arguing about this anymore. Again, it's just a game. I shouldn't have gotten so worked up over it and started arguing back so I apologize.
Title: Re: osu! - rhythm is just a click away

Apology accepted.  I don't think you got all of what I was saying, especially the last sentence of my previous post, but I didn't expect you to be that open anyways.  Oh well, argument dropped :)

Just as a hint, my point had nothing to do with whether or not people should pay attention to rank.
Title: Re: osu! - rhythm is just a click away
Post by: Ryex on September 20, 2009, 10:42:17 pm
woot I'm out of the 10,000! the only reason I pay attention to my rank is because it tells me how much I've improved... at least i think it does...
Title: Re: osu! - rhythm is just a click away
Post by: Starrodkirby86 on September 21, 2009, 12:16:59 am
Congratulations.

Rank isn't a very good indicator of how well someone plays. It simply is a basis of how high your score is. Someone who decently plays every song can get a higher rank than master players who don't have every song. People before me in the Top 100, even within the Top 300 can easily wipe out my scores by being able to full combo songs or play on harder mods (DoubleTime maniacs). Yet I'm still higher. Why? I simply played more songs and have a higher overall score.

However, it does give a good indication of devotion and a basic level of skill relativity to an extent. For example, the majority of players within ryexander's level are more or less around his range (Probably less because Ryex has been doing well).

Just sayin'. I don't want this to be a heated debate anyway; this leaderboard is there for a little fun viewing of CP players playing this game. ^^

Keep at playing, Ryex. <3

Apology accepted.  I don't think you got all of what I was saying, especially the last sentence of my previous post, but I didn't expect you to be that open anyways.  Oh well, argument dropped :)

Just as a hint, my point had nothing to do with whether or not people should pay attention to rank.

I'm not going to explain them anymore though :(

You all should go play Stepmania though it's much more impressive 8) Not really, but if you like osu! try Stepmania. Download songs from bemanistyle.com and flashflashrevolution.com. Check out the Stepmania thread here and talk to me or Star if you want more info.

Oh well, just gotta keep trying :)

Post scores or simfile requests in the Stepmania thread. Star might even take beatmap requests in here, once he finishes with some of his other work.

Don't tell me what I should do ! >8U

Haha, just kidding. Don't want to toot my (or our) horn(s) with this, but Diokatsu and I are definitely pretty knowledgeable within these items. Ask any one of us for any questions you have. If you're interested in making a Beatmap, definitely talk to me first or ring a bell here...

On the StepMania hand (Yeah, I know this is osu!, but whatever), you can still talk to either one of us for help there. Dio's pretty good in his field, so us guys got you covered to an extent in your rhythm gaming pleasures. ;) Of course, all the StepMania talk shall belong in the infamous StepMania thread.

Uh, on Beatmap Requests...it definitely depends on the song...but I do have to go through the muck I have right now, so it's best to bear with me there.

Gah, things aren't working for me with MSN Messenger (And I don't mean technically, I mean time and whatever-else"-ally").

So I'm just going to post about your Beatmap here, Diokatsu. Figured you'd read it here as opposed to the Beatmap Thread.

I'm sure your version is better than that other one I found (Though I didn't download it). Try an offset around 337? The jumps between combos worked pretty well for the most part, and good luck to anyone who reaches to the end; can anyone really trill those 32nds? :P

1: i like it a little bit offsync so people have to replay for scores.
2: I'm gonna be playing with some new patterns so don't worry about the copy pasta if you were hege
3:32nds are impossible I think.

1: Sure, a little off-sync is 'nice' supposedly, but I don't know if other people are going to be so fine with that. And giving them "man up" answers probably won't cut it too. Besides, you can make them replay for scores through tricky patterns like jumps and all that.
2: Aight, bro.

Good luck :p

You'll need it. Don't be disappointed if it comes out really bad. I can help with basic BPM and syncing though. First make sure no one made a ranked version already though.

I can do some modding pre-BAT look for being all nice~

Make sure you read the Beatmapping FAQ if you don't know squat about proper spacing and all.

And Diokatsu, I seen your updated version now. The slider patterns are just awesome; I loved that ending area overall.

Heck, you can upload it on Mediafire.

Don't mean to revive a dead thread, but I figured it's better than starting a new one.
I've played StepMania before and thought it was pretty neat, and this looks quite similar (in some ways,) so I figure I'll give it a shot. Two things:
1. I'll probably be playing on my laptop. Is it plausible to play well with a touchpad, or will I have to find a mouse?
2. Any tips for a beginner?
Title: Re: osu! - rhythm is just a click away
Post by: Starrodkirby86 on February 09, 2010, 10:40:52 pm
Oh, don't worry about it being dead. :P I'm a Forum Moderator there myself, so feel free to keep this thing chugging along too. Haha.

Right now the website is down, so you may have to wait a bit. :x

osu! doesn't have the same difficulty in StepMania in terms of actual rhythm. The hard part is where you have to use hand-eye coordination to accurately move and whatnot.

1. I have a friend who plays semi-decently on touchpad. The best experiences are with a mouse or a tablet though. A USB mouse can suffice, if you want. The touchpad works, but you'll have to move your finger a lot (It might hurt).

2. This game is based off Elite Beat Agents and Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan!, both iNiS games from the DS. If you know how to play those games, then you can do pretty well off here. Play songs you know well first. If you can't seem to move that fast, try increasing Mouse Sensitivity in the Options. This way the cursor speed will be multiplied by what you specified. If you can't play well with tapping, try using the Z/X Keys (Or whatever keys you mapped those for). Finally, since it's a rhythm game, most maps have a pattern you can muster through. (Like if the song has a straight quarter beat or something, blah blah).

Wall of text. :<

this makes me want to download Osu! to play taiko again.
and then I remember that I can't download song packs and have to do individual ones.

then I get annoyed and decide not to.

Oh, I was talking about how StepMania can go into the levels of 16ths and 32nds with ease, while osu! would make life too difficult. XD
