Entertainment / Re: Donnie Darko [2001]

It was a decent movie despite the teen angst and drama... I don't think the movie was trying to be philosophic anymore than say, Edward Scissorhands.

I stand corrected. All objects fall at the same rate if they fall from the same height and towards the same body of mass.

Ryex pointed out the acceleration of different masses towards the Earth. However, if one were to calculate the rate of the Earth falling toward that object the accelerations would probably have to be added to yield the actual time of impact.

Taking my above example, if an object that is falling towards the Earth and is 80% of the Earth's mass, it will accelerate toward it at the same speed as a feather would (assuming no drag). However, the Earth would also be "falling" towards the heavy mass at slightly lower rate, and the time of impact would actually be less than that of the Earth and feather.

I saw it when it came out. Great movie. I didn't like the sequel as much tho.

Yea, I applied the wrong formula...
But I suppose the problem is that in F=ma the a is the acceleration, assuming the objects falling have near nil gravity of their own.

Well, I looked up the definition for "fall" on Wikipedia (though not truly an authoritative source).
"Free fall is any motion of a body where gravity is the only or dominant force acting upon it, at least initially."
And the problem is that a single "body" is described, and the force or acceleration produced by that body is not taken into account.

I guess the point I was trying to make, is that that definition is not balanced, in that it considers gravity for one object where two are involved.

That is why in my example I placed the falling objects at opposite poles, to demonstrate the idea I had in mind. The feather would be along for the ride, but it would it's landing would be the last to take place. Granted, it's not a common situation that would usually occur... :p

Academics / "All objects fall at the same rate." Really?
September 03, 2010, 06:36:08 pm
Something along those lines I've read from Stephen Hawking's book. Seems like common knowledge.

I think it was Plato that hypothesized heavier objects fall faster, and Galileo proved otherwise by rolling balls of different weights down a slope. There was the famous dropping of the hammer and feather on the surface of the moon to demonstrate this.

But I can't wrap my head around it. It can't be wrong if a genius says so. Though the math says otherwise:

Newton's law of universal gravitation:
Spoiler: ShowHide
F=G m1*m2 / r^2
where:

    * F is the magnitude of the gravitational force between the two point masses,
    * G is the gravitational constant,
    * m1 is the mass of the first point mass,
    * m2 is the mass of the second point mass, and
    * r is the distance between the two point masses

Therefore:
Ffeather < Fhammer
And it seems like they fall at the same rate because the difference is so small.
Hypothetically, if one dropped two objects at the opposite poles of the moon, of the same size say, one with a mass 80% of the moon and the other a feather, which would fall faster (hit the moon first)? What am I missing?

So it seems you can get 5/5 even if you miss the final answer, if you do the tedious stuff. Not so bad. :p
But I've never heard of writing out an approach in English, unless they are preparing you for writing lab reports where you need to include an abstract and method of approach...

I have a question about _idl sprites on Blizz-ABS. They only shows the first frame (not the whole animation). May I´m doing something wrong or is not implemented on Blizz-ABS?

Sounds like you don't have it enabled. Make sure you add the chars to "Animated actors" in basic configuration in the config app. Also, have to check the box for actor idle sprites in sprite control.

Nice icons and great sprites. I would remove some of the icon gloss though, but they're cool overall.
In my experience, it's better not to try and force a sprite to look good through compulsive work. If you get bored or sick of working on a sprite, work on the game itself and when you're testing it you will more likely see if there's anything wrong with it, and better be able to fix it if it bugs you.

Looks fantastic! Great work; I'm impressed. I'll go ahead and put those into the game. As for Magil's sprite, he is actually older, though probably not by much. The most important thing to remember is that he wears a golden mask covering the top of his face. Apart from that, not much physical description is given in the game. Once this last sprite is finished, (Lynx doesn't show up until the very end, so he can wait,) and Zer0 gets around to finishing the CBS, I'll be able to release the first demo.

Thanks. Okays, I'll add a mask, probably avoid the age thing. :]
BTW, have you found any tilesets? Just curious.

Yep, I've taken some screens of CC in emulator, to try and get the look right.
Well, here is the final:

The ponytail and hair from the back still don't seem right to me. I'm giving up for now, but I may jump back to it later.

Here are the half-sized sprites for Serge and Kid, just in case they're handy:

I'll do Magil next, (using CT base of Magus), tho I can edit it to make him seem younger or different otherwise. (Idk if he's younger or older in the game...)

Intelligent Debate / Re: Eccentric or insane?
August 22, 2010, 09:37:13 pm
Technically, insanity is a medical condition and eccentricity is a description of people with behavior outside social norms. You could say many insane people are eccentric because they have odd behavior...

Anyway, I think I'm a bit of both. /win /joke?

By your definition, I would choose eccentricity. Insanity would just leave me brain damage (last thing I'd want).

I'm putting it up b/c I'm not sure if I can get the ponytail done and looking right. Also, some parts don't look right because I haven't done the touch up after up-scaling it from the half size (I add detail and fix it up then).

Mine testing confirms it's a pretty handy prog. I found a great use for it to preview the animation.
Though I got some bugs to report.
Saving as separate produces mychar.gif_1.gif, etc... even when .gif not added in. No big deal, but just want to bring it up.
Saving as single gives an error, Unhandled exception:

Really old and great game came to mind... Heroes of Might and Magic 3
Kind of a sand-box game but with objectives you have to fulfill, you lead multiple heroes that level up and build armies and castles...
I still tend to play this game after it's been out for years.
There are multiple sequels but they don't compare.

<3 Great game. Far from a sandbox game, plus I've about played it to death. But yes, that is a great game. IV was also very good - it had a bit more of an RPG aspect in regard to your Heroes. I actually played II more than III. Good times. Maybe I'll see if I can still find my old discs lying around and play a couple games for old time's sake.

I d/l'd HoMM IV to try it out and yea it's pretty cool. I like the new features they've added. But they removed some of the good stuff and I'm not a big fan of the music and rainbow GFX. Still, I'm probably gonna be playing it for a few days, thanks.

This could be really handy. I'll have to try it out. :)

I'm not sure but I think when they got on the topic of the totems, he said it was Mol's idea. They create the totems in the waking world and their symbols transfer over into the dream. So the top being in the movie doesn't necessarily mean it's her dream, but that he made use of it after she was gone.

Just to add my thoughts: if you haven't seen someone for a while you generally remember them as you've last seen them. It's only after you see them again that you're surprised at how much they've changed. I don't think they mention in the movie how long he's been exiled, but the conversations he has with his partner and father make it seem like a while (possibly years).
