Thanks for the welcomes!

I got my avatar from Plants VS Zombies... haha.   It has a built in avatar creator.

Would you consider First Seed Material resources to be in the RTP style?
Clearly people identify them with RPG Maker, so I guess that means yes...

I am not sure what the problem is.  My mail gets sent to my gmail addresses.   Perhaps you have your mail server setup to block me, since you are using your own mail server @ your own domain.

I could force add approve your account, but then you wouldn't be able to receive any further emails either  :(

Post updated to include linked content!

Sadly, the game is not playable yet to the public.  I am running tests on my local server here at home, which I turn off when I am not working on it.  You all are welcome to come and test it with me sometime, but for now, nothing is online for testing on the live site.

I would love to hear your feed back and comments though on what you see so far!

I asked First Seed about using their graphics in my game, which I do plan on monetizing to some degree.  Such as to fund the servers and multi-player aspects.  I explained I would be selling my game, just for sake of simplicity and language barrier, and they said it was fine.

But really, it seems that the player base is sooo opinionated on using RPG Maker graphics...

General Discussion / Re: Fluency in programming.
December 24, 2011, 02:41:48 am
From my experience being a T/A in university, I can really tell the difference people those who have the aptitude to program and those who can't.

From first hand experience, it seems that you either got it or you don't.  Those who don't got it, usually can get by but barely.  They get by through relying on other people, using code but not knowing what it does, or simply hope for the best.   These people usually use examples online or in books and copy them and just modify them every so slightly to barely do what the assignment requires.   Surprisingly they get a passing grade and move forward, but are they learning? No!

The other kind of person, those who got it, they start off maybe as the first group.  But with practice and time, and self learning, they start to get it.   I truly think programming is something you have to experience first hand.  It is not something you can be taught.  Sure someone can give you pointers and help get you started, or be there to help you troubleshoot bugs, but if you don't put in the effort to really learn it, its not going to happen.

You don't become fluent in programming until you can open up your coding environment, be it notepad, or something more complex, and feel comfortable writing your own lines of code.   Writing your own lines of code without having to see someone's example.  Without having to copy anything more than a function or method name.   That is being fluent.

To be an expert or master would then just require memorization of the various functions, methods, and libraries, and of course a better understanding of proper coding conventions.  However, I do not think memorization is key to being an expert.  There is nothing wrong with going to google and looking up the documentation for a library that you didn't create.  I mean, after all, how else would you know?

But really only you can tell your level of as a programmer.

General Discussion / Re: Death in online games
December 24, 2011, 02:33:00 am
In one online game, when you die you go to the nearest grave yard and have to run back to your dead body as a ghost.  Once you reach your body you come back to life with low health and mana.  The trick is to get your body back without triggering what killed you the first time!

In another game, when you die you get sent back to town completely naked and have to run back to your body to retrieve your gear.  Sometimes the way back is full of monsters and without your gear makes it very hard to get back!

Although traditionally, in RPG's when you die its game over, the idea is, you should have saved and that is your check point you return to.  I kind of like the simplicity and requirement on the player to do that.

But no matter what way you go, it seems there must be a penalty to death and require the player to jump through some kind of hoop.   And with your suggestion of a mini-game, it could be just that, make them jump through hoops, haha, jk.

What is everyone's opinion of using RPG Maker resources in games you make yourself with your own code or engine?

I have contacted the artists of First Seed Material, better known as Mack Blue, and they said that they will allow you to use their graphics in any game reguardless of RPG Maker.

I think that sometimes you just don't have the resources to hire an artist or draw all the graphics yourself, and using pre-made graphics is a quick way to get a head start on your project.  But it seems that people can tell right away its RPG Maker graphics and automatically judge your work poorly or associate it as being an RPG Maker game.

I realize that trying to sell or monetize a game using ripped or even RPG Maker graphics may be hard.  And it could even make your game lack a unique graphical style.

What do you all think?

Does anyone go into the chat room much any more? I tried it out using the mibbit link I found in one of the threads, and only Batman was in there... haha

New Projects / [AS3] RpgLegend (Online RPG)
December 24, 2011, 02:00:43 am

Free, Online, Web-based, Flash, 8-bit styled RPG
http://www.rpglegend.com

Rpg Legend is under development and is being created using ActionScript3 (Flash) and will be playable within your web browser. The game uses RPG Maker resources and can also use animated flash files for even more flexiablity. I am designing the game engine myself, and each week I am adding new features. The playable beta version is slated to be completed sometime in March 2012 (estimate).

Some of the great features planned for Rpg Legend include:
  • No downloads.
You will be able to play Rpg Legend directly from your web browser. All you will need is the latest version of Flash installed.
  • Evolving, persistent world.
The game world and locations will be updated in real time, allowing you to experience new content as you play. New locations are planned to be added on a monthly basis. Existing locations will evolve over time.
  • Free to play.
Online features will be funded through banner advertisements and a cash shop to buy novelty and cosmetic items.
  • Five distinct playable classes.
Players will be able to choose from 5 unique classes: Sage, Protector, Reaper, Geomancer, and Brawler.
  • Turn based battle system.
Classic side view, turn based battle system, complete with enemy A.I. and unique battle mechanics.
  • Professions and crafting.
All players will be able to create their own armor, items, and weapons with the materials they gather throughout the world.
  • Party system.
Party with your friends to defeat hard bosses, fight other players, and quest together.
  • Online Economy.
Trade and sell items to other players, post auctions and bid on other player's auctions, and mail items to other players.
  • Clans.
Join player operated clans to gain additional bonuses and to easily find people to trade and party with

Since the game is being developed by a small team of people, with little money to fund this project, there will be some limitations. The biggest limitation is that this project will most likely not be an MMORPG. We may have to make it that when you play alone you will be isolated to your own little world. When you party with other players you will be isolated to your party. However, just because you won't see people on the map, doesn't mean you won't be able to interact with them. At all times you will be able to have access to the whole player base to sell items through the auction hall, trade items, and even start Player VS Player battles. Our goal is to allow more MMO-like features to be added to the game as the resources and funds allow.

Playable Classes:

Protector , Geomancer , Brawler , Sage, and Reaper .

Help needed!

RpgLegend needs people to help test the game, give suggestions and feedback. All you need to do is reply below and give your comments after you test things!

I also am looking for people to help me design the game and world. No programming experience needed. Such as: plot lines, quests, and mapping. The world will be growing on a monthly basis and having a dedicated team helping me grow the world will be a must. Let me know if you are interested in joining the development team.

Visit the Rpg Legend website:

Please take a moment to explore the game's website to learn more about Rpg Legend. If the project interests you at all, consider subscribing to the email newsletter, and signing up to the site and contributing your own ideas and suggestions.

I would love to hear your feedback, ideas and suggestions.

And please feel free to read and comment in this thread here on this site. I will be checking here often and updating you all on the latest development and progress.

Thank you for your support!

EDIT:  I edited out the links to the game's site, so I don't violate any advertising rules!

Welcome! / Hello everyone!
December 24, 2011, 01:56:45 am
My name is thephantom, and I decided to join your site because I love making games, and I love that your community focuses on more than just RPG Maker.

I have to admit signing up to your site got me tricked.  I couldn't manage to get past the bot test.  haha.  I didn't read the part where it said to only add the first and last.  Tricky!

Well a little bit about myself...

I have a passion in making games. I started with Game Maker, made a crappy RPG with the default pac-man example. Then I found RPG maker 2000, loved it. Made several games of only a few maps each, never finished one. Moved to 2003, made a game with about 1 dungeon's worth of content. Then XP came out, and I couldn't keep up. I got distracted with other things, and never got around to using XP. And finally, I started working on making a game with Flash and ActionScript.

My current game I am making is an online RPG and I am using ActionScript. At first glance it looks like an RPG maker game, but really isn't. It runs completely in the web browser just using flash. It is still in early development, but is coming along nicely. Since I am not using any existing engine I have to create all the features myself. It takes time, and has slowed me down a bit. I would love for people to test it out and give suggestions to help me make it better. I think I will make another thread about it and keep you all updated on its progress.

Beyond making games, I am a tv junkie and play some games. I watch hulu and netflix almost constantly. I enjoy Stargate, Star Trek, Grey's Anatomy, House, Bones, The Office, Fringe, and Chopped, just to name a few. I mainly play World of Warcraft, I am alliance, I got a 85 tank, healer, and dps, so if you ever want to group up to do some heroics let me know! I also play some minecraft and skyrim when I get a chance.

Thanks for having me!  Hope to get to know you all in time!  :haha:
