Chat / Re: Starcraft 2 and WoW Guest passes
October 24, 2014, 07:45:14 pm
If I remember right, Blizzard games trials are now free, and no longer require guest passes. I could be wrong, though. Regardless, thanks for taking the time to post these and share them. It's the thought that counts. :)

That's terrible. :( I hope you get it worked out.

I would love a Chaos Project app! Tapatalk integration has been brought up a few times in the past, and has proved to be either impossible or just simply not worth the effort due to a lot of the custom things here on CP, but a native app would be able to provide a work-around, I'm sure. However, I'd definitely use it if there were one. :)

That sounds like a nice mattress upgrade. I wish I could do something about mine; it's provided as part of the apartment, but it's more of a cot then even a real mattress, and is smaller even than a twin. Of course, I usually end up scrunched up in the corner anyway, so I don't know if a bigger mattress would even help. Haha.

As for laptop fans, I actually replaced the fan in my brother's laptop a few weeks ago, as it was making a really awful rattling noise. Unfortunately, it turned out that the noise was actually from the computer's plastic casing, which is cracked and broken in a few places, and not the fan, so it didn't end up helping. Hopefully your new fan will have better results. :)

Also, I can't wait to hear the songs you've come up with. :D

It looks awesome, G_G. :D Congratulations on the new PC.

I was a little bit confused until I realized that the protruding end is an HDMI, not a USB, and now it makes a lot more sense. (The title of the article appears to be incorrect.) You'd still need either a USB/Bluetooth mouse and/or keyboard (or plug it into a touchscreen) for it to truly be useful, but I still think it looks really cool.

I just built a prototype with duct-tape and some cabinet hinges I picked up from Home Depot.  It definitely works, although the two sets of headphones I was using were both so big that I had to anchor the headphones up on my forehead instead of in front of my ears.  On the plus side, gravity pulls the free-swinging headphones into place, so there is no need for springs.  I need to find a more permanent method of attaching the hinge, and maybe some smaller headphones, and then I'll be able to make a usable pair.

That sounds really neat. You should post some pictures once you've gotten a usable version.

Intelligent Debate / Re: The Obligation of Intelligence
October 08, 2014, 09:27:21 pm
I feel that there are different categories of intelligence, with significant overlap though still enough distinction for each be prominent in its own way. I also feel that each of these categories of intelligence can be individually developed through practice and use. Some people way be more naturally inclined towards some fields of intelligence than others and may be inclined to develop more quickly in those fields than other individuals, but with enough practice, nearly anyone can achieve high levels of intelligence, to at least some degree.
However, in my opinion, the problem is that modern society (often including large parts of the educational system) promotes reaching only an adequate level of intelligence in necessary fields, whether it be to achieve a certain level of salary, a certain job title, or some other goal determined by the individual, and then stalling in complacence. If the goals were high enough, this wouldn't be a problem, as people would have, during the process of reaching their goal, gained a broad enough amount of practice and development in necessary fields of intelligence to reach logical, rational decisions in their life circumstances, whether it be political decisions, internet forum discussions, or otherwise. However, from what I've seen, people often don't even desire to reach these higher standards of intelligence, and instead reach their level of complacence at a much lower development of intelligence, leading to the birth of the aforementioned sheep, along with some of the "wonderful" personalities encountered on the internet and other places filled with seemingly... lesser mortals. Haha.
Obviously, this is abstracting a little more than is completely reasonable, as some people may, due to circumstances beyond their control, be effectively capped at the amount of practice they are able to give certain skills and areas of development, but generally speaking, I feel that people could be more intelligent if they put forth more effort to become so.
Another problem that is only semi-related is a general lack of empathy and kindness towards others, particularly on the internet and now leaking out into physical interactions, though that is more of a topic for another thread.

(I don't post often in intelligent debate, so hopefully this is a meaningful contribution to the discussion and not just my own rambling. Sorry about that.)

General Discussion / Re: New MMO concept brainstorming
October 01, 2014, 10:13:39 pm
I'd love to see the concept of a universal goal return to MMOs, along with server-wide actual events. In the early days of World of Warcraft, it incorporated some of these things, such as having "war efforts" were all players on a server were able to contribute items towards a goal, and once it was met, there would be a large-scale event. Unfortunately, the servers at the time weren't able to handle it smoothly due to the mass of players being in the same place, and WoW no longer holds such events. The idea, however, sounds like it was solid and would have been a lot of fun.

As KK20 pointed out, this is, in the mind of the developer, a lot of work for a non-repeatable goal, which might be one of the reasons that it fell out of favor with MMOs today. However, as a player, it would be a great experience if you were there at the right time, and would give "history" to the game even if you came after it had taken place.

General Discussion / Re: A Couple Of Questions.
October 01, 2014, 10:07:05 pm
RPG Maker XP is able to almost any regular image file in the game, such as a .png and a .jpeg, so you can use any software that you'd like to make images that are compatible with it. It's more a question of your artistic ability; I'm sure you'll be able to make some great sprites with practice. :)

There are pretty much two categories of images used in RMXP games: "sprite" type images, which are usually pretty small and used on the "map" part of the game, and "image" images, which are much larger and used in battles. (Those aren't their official names, of course, but I think it's the easiest way to get the point across. Haha.) They're made using pretty different art styles, so you might want to look into starting with just one. Making sprites might be a good place to start, since it is less strictly "artistic."

You can find a few great tutorials on how to get started with spriting here:

I hope that helps! :)

I dunno if you enjoy shooters, but if you DO decide to get one for the Vita, get Killzone: Mercenary.
It is by far the best FPS on the Vita, with an insane amount of polish to both graphics and gameplay. Packed with content, as well.

Every other FPS on the Vita is garbage in comparison.

Other suggestions:
1. Uncharted: Golden Abyss
2. Gravity Rush
3. Wipeout 2048
4. PS1 and PSP games

Thanks. I actually don't typically like FPS games, but I've heard nothing but good things about Killzone and I do pick up an FPS every once in a while (I recently played through Bioshock Infinite, as a matter of fact, and that it was really well done. I actually enjoyed the setting more than anything else about the game, though; it was incredibly atmospheric. Anyway, now I'm off topic. Haha.) so I'll be sure to grab it if it goes on a good sale.

A couple of final notes: I already have Persona 4 Golden, so no need to recommend that one.

;)

I do love Persona 4 Golden, though; Persona 4 was one of my favorite games even before Golden was announced, and Golden adds nothing but good things (well, and the completely unnecessary online feature, but that's easily ignored. XD)

After messing with the tileset editor finding the right priorities, proportions etc... I bring you this pic of the Main city (at least on the WIP demo)

Spoiler: ShowHide

It might not seem like a lot that I can reveal in there, but in a nutshell:

The top image is a showcase of:

-Working Fences (As seen in the image, fence appears on top when player goes behind it, player is on top when in front of it)
-Proximity based SFX, you can hear the water flow of the fountain on the right the closer you get to it, the farther you get away
  the fountain's water sfx stops.

The bottom image only showcases the entrance to the city.

Also as a second easter egg for the upcoming demo.... well.... let's just say I've had so much fun replacing the
original RPGXP party with my own.

Spoiler: ShowHide

I'll figure out what to do with the other 2 in due time....

It looks great. :) I always love seeing what people are able to do with modern cities in RMXP.

Thanks to you both. :) I'll probably go for Danganronpa, then; good to know that Neptunia is a less-than-stellar experience. I'll avoid that one unless it goes on a really great sale or something.

Video Games / Vita Game
September 25, 2014, 05:47:19 pm
I'm going on a roadtrip this weekend and for the first time in a long while, I'm having trouble deciding which game I want to purchase. (Usually, even when I want to get something new to play, there's just not anything worth buying. Haha.)
I got a Vita a few weeks ago, as I saw an unbeatable deal in the local classifieds, and I have been honestly shocked at the fantastic library of games it has - it might not have objectively as many games as other consoles, but it has a ton of games that, according to my personal tastes, are fantastic. My tastes tend to be more "eastern" than "western," meaning I have more fun with games like Final Fantasy, Persona, 999, and so on as opposed to Skyrim, FPS games, Grand Theft Auto, etc. (though I will say that I loved the decidedly western Mass Effect series.) With PS classics, PSP games, and any pre-N64 era titles (due to emulation) being playable and some of the best PS2 and PS3 RPGs having been ported to it, I have almost literally every one of my favorites games in the same place - and it's a handheld! :D
Anyway, as I mentioned, I'd like to select a new game since I'll be on the road for a while. Does anyone have any particular suggestions that I should try? Here are a few of the games that I have my eye on:
  • Disgaea 4 - I played the first one on PSP, and honestly only got a couple of levels into it. However, I love the concepts in it and the sense of humor, so I think I probably just have the give the series another good, honest try. The main gameplay elements - SRPG but heavy on more typical JRPG elements, "unlimited" leveling, ultimate unbeatable super-bosses, etc - all seem to be right up my alley, so this is one that I'm considering.
  • Final Fantasy X | X-2 - I played Final Fantasy X to death on the PS2, beating the US version and, after getting my characters insanely powerful and then realizing that the super-bosses were only available in the PAL release, the European version, that one as well (never actually did get around to beating Penance, though.) I also really liked Final Fantasy X-2; admittedly, the story was pretty bad, but it never takes itself too seriously and the combat is fantastic. Since I already know I like this game, that makes it an easy choice, but since I've played it before, I also wouldn't mind getting something new instead.
  • Danganronpa - I have heard amazing things about this game, and it seems to be somewhere along the lines of 999, which I really, really enjoyed. It's classified as a "horror" game, and though I know that that probably isn't the most accurate genre for it, I do actually like horror elements in gaming (I recently started Corpse Party and have really enjoyed that, though between my school schedule and work, I haven't had time to get too far into it. Besides, the time to play it has to be right, for that type of game! Haha.)
  • Hyperdimension Neptunia ReBirth1 - Though it received mixed reviews, it seems like many of those who didn't find it enjoyable aren't fans of the genre to begin with. It looks like it's a pretty typical JRPG with a plot based on a parody of the gaming industry, and a cute art style. Even if I don't get this one now, I'd like to pick it up at some point, because the premise seems funny and it looks like a lot of fun.
  • Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment - I watched SAO myself a few months ago, and actually really enjoyed it (the second half was pretty average, but the first half was spectacular; in my opinion, they should have ended it at the first "ending.") However, even those who haven't watched the anime say that it's a great game. It "pretends" to be an MMO, but it is entirely single player, which seems like a really interesting premise, though admittedly doesn't appeal to everyone. I'm love to give it a try, but I'm not sure if this is the one that I want to get.

Has anyone played any of these games who would like to recommend them (or against them)? I kind of wish that the Vita was like the PC or PSP where I could download games and try them for a while to see if I like them before buying the (usually better functioning) non-downloaded version.

A couple of final notes: I already have Persona 4 Golden, so no need to recommend that one. (For the record, it's amazing - one of my favorite games.) I also don't typically enjoy multiplayer games or the multiplayer component of games, so I don't know if I would be very interested in any game where that is a major draw.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to take a look through all of my ramblings. :)

I can understanding wanting to take a break for a while, and setting things aside until life calms down. I do that all the time for various things, and you've seen, have even disappeared from CP myself for weeks at a time if life just demands my attention elsewhere for a while. Don't feel like this is an all-or-nothing decision. Feel free to leave for a little while if you feel like you need extra time and control in your life, but know that you're always welcome back here whenever you'd like. :)

Projects / Re: A proceduraly generated story game
September 20, 2014, 12:48:56 am
As legacyblade mentioned, one of the key points will be the characters. If you want the story to be engaging, having well-written characters is vitally important. Longevity of the characters is also going to be significant - people are going to get more connected to their characters over time, so perhaps having an option to make a "sequel" with characters appearing from a previous version of the game would be a good idea.
Once people are connected to the characters, you're going to have a lot of cards in your hard, but you'll need to make sure they're played properly. For example, the generator could decide to kill off a certain character. This would need to be handled very well in order to have an emotional impact and not just have the player get angry and / or lose interest in the story because one of their characters died. For subsequent deaths seen in either that playthrough or another, if there were any, they would need to be clearly unique enough that it isn't obvious that the death scene is based on the same root. That would take all of the emotion out of it and once again become frustrating. Though I used death scenes as an example, this would also apply to any sort of character-based event scene, whether it be inter-party banter or the climax of the story. (As a passing suggestion, deaths should be used very sparingly so that they are not expected in order to have maximum impact. Somewhere between 0 and 1 per playthrough would probably be more than enough. That way, it would be really jarring for the player to encounter one, even if they've been through the game several times. Now, near-death scenes could be a little more frequent, in order to keep the player mentally on their toes and not knowing when something truly tragic might happen. Sorry, I'm rambling now, but hopefully the thought makes sense.)
To reiterate, character personality traits and so on are key. If you can manage to create characters that are unique every run but manage to be the quality of characters seen in story-based franchises like Chrono Trigger, Mother, Final Fantasy, Mass Effect, and so on, then this engine would really be a work of art, and something I'd even purchase if it were to be on sale.

You have a really great idea on your hands. :)
