Recruitment / English proofreader wanted!
May 07, 2015, 05:36:51 am
Long story short, I'm looking for someone to proofread our upcoming game's English script.

The game we are making is a short freeware student project that you can just download on your computer and play.
In general it has a similar aesthetic to an old and slightly creepy storybook. Thus, the narration isn't just your everyday modern standard American English. Instead, we're using a bit older English. This is mainly to accentuate the atmosphere and give it that old storybook feel.

As this is just a student project that you can play for free, we're not able to give you any monetary compensation. However, you will naturally get your name (and possibly a caricature of yourself) to the end credits. The script is almost finished so it's not really a huge commitment to the project.

If you're a native English speaker, at least as good at English as your run-of-the-mill high school graduate, know how to use some older sentence structures and words and have a little spare time on your hands, feel free to reply! The script will be sent as a text file so no fancy programs are needed. :)

Yo!

In 1995, a horror game called Clock Tower was released on the Super FamiCom.
Now, the  director of the game, Hifumi Kono, along with Takashi Shimizu (director of Ju-On: The Grudge movies), Masahiro Ito (creature designer for the Silent Hill series) and some other well-known developers, are making a spiritual successor for it called NightCry.

Here's the game's Kickstarter page!
And here's its YouTube channel!

If you're interested in the game, please support it!
I really want to see this game come true. .____.

O hai!

At the moment I'm working on a Unity game project with a team at school. I've taken it to myself to attempt making a dialogue box for the game.
The thing is, I don't really know how to make one.

What I'm asking is: What would be the best way to start make one?

The dialogue box is to be similar to message boxes in the RPG Maker series; uniform shape, size and position, able to show 3 to 5 rows of text and the contents of the text can be customized according to what needs to be told to the player. Because the size of the box will always be the same (or at least with the same aspect ratio) no fancy systemset graphics are needed, just one picture for the box should do. Later, I can try to add buttons to the box but at the moment they aren't exactly a priority.

I know the basics of C#; I know how variables, methods, conditions, loops, objects and the like work. I'm still new to Unity-specific terms though but I'm learning it more and more at school.
I've also experimented with image dimensions and I can adjust the box size in Unity according to the screen size, so that's not a problem.

I'm not asking for an in-depth tutorial on how to make one (but if you know one, feel free to send a link!). What I'm asking for is some pointers on where to start and what'd be a practical way to do it regarding the fact that the box should be able to be called whenever needed and have whatever text needs to be told to the player. :)

Video Games / Indies VS PewDiePie
November 12, 2014, 03:27:10 am
Read all about it here.

Long story short, from 21 to 24 of November there will be a game jam (an event where you make a complete game in a short time) hosted by PewDiePie. There's 72h time to make the game and all its assets. You can use any engine (even *gasp* RPG Maker!) as long as all art and audio assets are made during this time period. When the time is up, the community will vote the best games and PewDiePie will play and record playing the top ten games and publish them on his YouTube channel.
There are no prices but the experience itself, which I can definitely say will be very beneficial to anyone who wants to make games. Oh, and if you get to the top, you'll get some very huge visibility. :D

So, anyone up here wanna join in on the fun?

I myself won't be participating as a member of this forum. Instead, I'll be participating as a student of my school. I'm gathering up a team from my friends here. :3

Welcome! / Not gonna be active for a while
October 05, 2014, 06:55:16 am
Yo.

You might have noticed already but I haven't really been active here lately.
There's a reason for that.

It's not long ago that I moved on my own, so my Internet connection has just been through my cell phone.
Well, it just so happens that my wallet and phone got stolen last Monday. :)

So, as I don't have an Internet connection at home anymore for a while, pretty much the only times I can get to the Internet are at school or at the weekends in the library. And my priority is on important stuff like our school's intranet, my bank account, announcements on different important Facebook groups and so on, so... coming here isn't right now really high on my list of priorities. :D

But worry not! As soon as I get a proper Internet connection, I'll once again be active! :)

PS. Once I get the connection, I have something to announce about my project, To The Dawn. if anyone still remembers it lol xd

Chat / A Same-Sex Wedding in Russia!
August 21, 2014, 02:14:39 pm
You can read about it here!

Long story short, the Russian officials had no choice but to allow two women to get married together because one of them had once been male and was legally still recognized as such so legally they were considered a heterosexual couple.

I just love it when discriminating laws like this can be used against each other. :D

Oh dawg, this is starting to get really annoying.

Sometimes when I click something once, everything goes just fine. At other times my mouse registers one click as a double click.
Now you may think: "Wow, that's such a first world problem!" Well, hear me out, because it's getting really fucking annoying!

I'm writing a long piece of text and I notice a small error in the middle of it. I click the part, use backspace and then correct it. Oops, since I had accidentally double-clicked the text, the whole text was highlighted and thus I had just removed the entire text.
I use Opera as a browser (don't judge me lol) and I click one of my gazillion tabs. When a tab is selected, a small X appears on it's left side giving the option to close the tab. Because I have so many tabs, they're also small in width. Oops, since I just accidentally double-clicked a tab instead of clicking it once, it registered the other click as a click on the X and thus the tab is now gone.

This wouldn't be as annoying if it didn't happen all the fucking time.

What should I do?
11
Boo.

I have a problem with PSX4droid (as if you couldn't read the title lol). All games run but, even though sound goes normally, there's no picture. The screen is, aside from the virtual buttons, completely black, even though the games themselves run just fine. Also, occasionally the games make screaky voices that rub my ears the wrong way...

I tried tinkering with the video options and tried four different BIOS files but nothing worked. I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S4 and right now I'm using SCPH1001 as my BIOS of choice.

Entertainment / Characters to go gay for
March 16, 2014, 07:03:08 pm
The topic name pretty much says it all. :p

Do you know any characters that are of a gender you're not into but you find so awesome they're sexy or just extremely fuckable? Basically, what character would you go gay/straight for?

I'm feeling shy so I'll let y'all start first. *blush*
14
Ahem... *clears throat*

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is simply not playable. The game is literally impossible to be played. This is mainly because of three reasons:
1) Doing absolutely anything other than getting hit is impossible. There's no way of doing anything.
2) You can't win online. The possibility of ever winning any match online is even lower than zero percent.
3) You can't get better at the game. If a miracle happens and you actually happen to pass the line of being hit only 99,99999999999999999999999999% of the time, you can never pass this point you have achieved through literally thousands of spent hours. You can only get worse.

Every command in the game, practically even navigating the menus, literally requires superhuman speed, impossible hand-eye-coordination and diamond-hard skin on one's thumb tips. Not to mention that on many occasion the game, with absolutely no other reason than it wanting to be a complete fucktard when it comes to deciphering which buttons are pressed, decides to either intentionally misinterpret which D-buttons are pressed (for example, pressing just Forward may cause the effect of either Forward or Forward-Up because, you know, 1 button = 2 buttons) or decide to intentionally completely disregard the fact that the player has pressed anything at all (pressing any button during the delay time of 5 hours between every last move in the game). Every attack also requires extremely difficult finger maneuvers on the D-pad to produce such sequences as quadra-tapping a button with the maximum time between each button press being half a microsecond.

The reason not losing in online matches is utterly impossible is mainly because of the players. Every possible player in the entire game is either with the rank of Tekken God or True Tekken God (or at least should be if they played Ranked Matches) or a person who uses an extremely cheap character (I'm looking at you Eddy, Christie, Tiger and the Laws) to spam extremely cheap moves 24/7. There are absolutely no fair-playing newbies there because they simply quit after practically just turning the game on, scared of the impossibility of the game.

If you have miraculously passed the level of being hit merely 99,99999999999999999999999999% of the time anymore, you won't get any better. In fact, you'll only get worse. When you previously could do nothing, you can later do less than nothing. When you were previously hit 100% the time, later you will be hit 800% of the time. When you think you're now just completely shit at the game, which is better than you were before, the difficulty spike rises over 9000 levels and you get demoted to a rank that's lower than even that of a used condom. Your hands will then just cramp instead of pushing any buttons and your reaction time will become as fast as that of a sloth. Once you have reached that level, you will never get back anymore.

All in all, the game is pure torture and an exercise in masochism. Playing it, because of constantly making me lose, is seriously starting make me want to cry out of frustration.
...

...and yet I play this game every day. I think I need therapy @___ò

Script Troubleshooting / [XP] Mode7 Crash
January 17, 2014, 09:46:52 am
Yo.
If I'm using the Mode7 script and I start testplay with the player starting position on a map that has no set Mode7 parameters, the game will, after selecting a new game, crash and throw the following error message:

QuoteScript 'Spriteset_Map' line 117: NoMethodError occurred.

undefined method `ox=' for #<Tilemap_mode7:0x3c982b0>

I browsed through the comments in the topic and a few people had the same problem as well. Too bad no one answered them.
Any idea what's causing this and how to solve it?

Script Requests / [Resolved][XP] Finish this CMS for me

Yo. I started editing AJNR95's CMS and so far, with my absolutely non-existent RGSS abilities, I managed to adjust the menus the way I wanted to. The menu system and the clock window for it (+ extra poop) are now like this:

There are just three more things to do that I just can't pull off on my own. These are:

1. Set a background picture for the menu.
2. Add the battler of the first hero in party to the empty space in the menu. (The battler will change during the game, so I can't just set one specific pic.)
3. Add an icon to the clock window to function as a "currency" or something like that. (I have a clock icon that I want to add to it.)

Would someone be so kind as to help me with this? I understand that I'm a total newb concerning scripting and RGSS and that these things should be fairly simple. I can set the graphics as needed, like the position for the battler and which pic to show, so that's not too specific.

Thanks in advance! :)

Resource Requests / A cliff to the Void
January 11, 2014, 04:04:22 pm
Hi guys! What I'm looking for this time is a simple map element for XP. This map element is a cliff. Or a ravine or a gorge, however you want to call it.
But not exactly any kind of cliff.

I edited Avadan's (I have no idea whether they're on this forum or not) awesome "world map" style modern city tileset for VX to work on XP.
Spoiler: ShowHide

Pretty cool, huh?

What I need for it is a cliff that leads deep into the black. I can't really describe it in words, so I'll just let this world map tileset by Mack do the work.
Spoiler: ShowHide

I mean the three cliffs on the right. Second row. That was for the event that someone's stupid. lol

Why aren't I just copying the cliffs from this tileset then? It's because of a simple reason; I need the gorges to be wide. And by wide, I mean several, tens or even hundreds of, miles wide. In scale, of course.
So, I'm looking for either a set of tiles or an autotile for a big, wide gorge that can be made to pretty much any size or shape as needed. It should match the style of the first tileset.

If anyone has anything like this already, knows where to find something like this or is willing to make this, I'd be very, very grateful. Thank you in advance. =]

Video Games / The Tekken Thread
January 03, 2014, 05:08:39 pm
I'm surprised there hasn't been a thread about this already.

Are there other Tekken players besides me here? What Tekken games do you play / have you played? What are your opinions on the games? What characters do you use the most often? Do you have a story behind playing the series?

I "began" playing Tekken by laying the demo versions of Tekken 3 and later Tekken 4 when I was little. Most of this "playing" was done by spamming X and O with Eddy/Christie lol. I think I was 12, 13 or 14 when I got Tekken 5 and, well, I kinda got hooked. For some reason I started playing with Xiaoyu and I still main her to this day. I never actually became good in the game but I enjoyed playing it and I never got to play against an actual person, so who cares? For some stupid reason I later exchanged the game to some other game in a local game store, so I couldn't play Tekken again for a while. I later used an emulator to try Tekken Advance but it wasn't very good and later I borrowed Tekken 2 from a friend. About a year and a half ago I got myself Tekken 6 for PSP and I noticed I never got any worse during the years of not playing. Too bad my PSP is modded so I can't play online with it.
However, I bought PS3 this summer, so I downloaded Tekken Revolution. This was my first experience of playing against someone who actually also plays the game. It was very enlightening to play against a real person instead of a computer. Finally, after I grew tired of the coin system, I bought Tekken Tag Tournament 2 a few days ago.
And oh my God am I hooked!

As I already said, I main Xiaoyu. I'm also good with Alisa because I still haven't got Xiaoyu in Revolution, I got Alisa fast and I liked her in Tekken 6. You can find me playing TTT2 or sometimes Revolution by the name of "ranquil", if anyone's interested. I'm very casual concerning the game but I'm not a total beginner.

Script Requests / [XP] Partially Disclusive Tint
December 28, 2013, 05:58:56 pm
Yo. I came up with an idea for a script that'd be useful but not absolutely necessary to my project. Someone else might also benefit from it as well.

What I'm looking for is a script that can be used to set a tint that discludes set events and/or hero. For example, it could be used to change the screen tone dark blue, but the hero and certain important events would be with their original tone. Possibly it could even be used to change the tone of the map but not the panorama or vice versa. I'm aware one could just use an image editor to change the tint of the tileset and charsets accordingly, but having a script like this would massively reduce the amount of work needed for this, especially if the tone were to change during or after certain events.

What do you think; would someone else be interested in a script like this as well?

Script Requests / [RMXP] Percentage and New Game +
September 09, 2013, 03:11:45 pm
Everyone knows how New Game + and the percentage system work in Final Fantasy X-2, right?
Well, I'm going to use a similar system in my project, To The Dawn, with the addition of using ForeverZer0's Diary and Journal scripts. Except it goes kinda like this:

- Doing some things and seeing cutscenes raises the percentage and records information in the Journal
- After finishing the game, a New Game + option becomes available
- If the player selects New Game +, playtime, current percentage and all the Journal logs are kept but everything else is removed
- Journal logs and percentage won't be gained again from completing the same tasks they were received from but they can be gained from events previously missed
- Once 100% is achieved, the player can trigger certain events

Too bad I can't find any scripts to help me get a New Game +. I know I can store the percentage as a variable and prevent from gaining percents from the same events again by using switches. I was actually thinking of replacing the currency as the percentage. That way it would be easily visible from the pause menu. However, does anyone know any New Game + scripts or other scripts that can help me with this?

Intelligent Debate / Long hair on men
September 06, 2013, 07:07:39 pm
Because I'm a bit drunk, I decided to make another debate about a subject that concerns me. What do you think about long hair on men and men's hair length in general? Any hairstyles that work or don't work? Do you have any real-life examples?

My hair reaches just and just to my shoulders. It's long enough to be long when considering men's hair length but it's pretty short regarding women's hair length. I've got some positive and negative comments on it but I personally think it's sexy as phuck.

PS. None of my close female relatives properly know how to braid whereas I can French braid my own hair. :O.o:

Resource Requests / Apples, anyone?

What I need right now is an apple tree for my RMXP project. An apple tree with ripe apples.

Believe me, it's very important! And no, no other kind of tree will do. It has to be an apple tree.
I tried to sprite the tree myself and I failed miserably lol. I also looked everywhere for outdoor tilesets or charsets that had trees to find an apple tree but I didn't find even one.
The size of the tree should be a bit large. Imagine an apple tree that's grown to the point that it can't grow any bigger. Please use an RTP character for comparison as the graphics for the game are based on RTP style and size. The color of the apples doesn't really matter, although red or golden ones would be more visible from among the green leaves. And no bad apples in there! (no pun intended lol)
If anyone's up for it, thanks a lot in advance!

Also, it'd be very cool to have a burned-down version of the tree too. I need that as well, but I can somewhat edit it from a complete tree if necessary.

The Story

A girl wakes up late at night in her bed the night before turning 12 only to discover that, with the exception of her room, her home is burned down, with blackened ruble lying everywhere and her parents nowhere to be found. The moon is oddly huge and bright, illuminating her completely deserted hometown with its ominous, silvery light. The only pieces of clothing the girl can find in her wardrobe are her fancy dark blue dress with a golden butterfly embroidered onto the chest; a long, pale pink ribbon and her shiny, black shoes: the outfit she wore a few weeks ago in her uncle's wedding. Even though she's not feeling very well, the girl steps out from the ruins that once were her home to find her parents. The oddly quiet town makes the girl recall many past memories, both happy and sad. But the girl is not alone. The shadows hide terrifying secrets that desire to trap her eternally into the void.

Gameplay

The game is a simple survival horror game that contains no battles. As you take the role of a weak little girl, you're absolutely defenseless, meaning enemies must be avoided or outsmarted. The emphasis is on the story, atmosphere and puzzles. The game will be rather short, ten hours being the absolute maximum. This doesn't make the game small in content though, as there will be many unlockable scenes, secrets and diary logs, and it's not possible to unlock them all during just one playthrough. If nothing, it's at least one of the games that will make you cry. You have my word on that.

Progress so far

Right now all concrete stuff I have on the project is concept art, failed attempts at spriting, a few maps and a short story written by me from which the game is based on. The story is almost completely done, meaning small details are to be developed here and there. At the moment I have two artists in the team.

I'll inform of anything new here when I get to make progress here. Any questions and constructive criticism is welcome.

O hai!

I'm Ranquil, also known by the nick meyvn MaRa around the web. I've lurked here years ago for a while and I started to lurk here again about a month ago. Time for registration then, yay!
I'm an 18-year-old guy from Finland. I'm really tall, about 190cm (if you can't use the metric system and you honestly care about my height, use Google conversion or something lol). I'm a brunet, with my slightly curly hair reaching my shoulders. You have absolutely no idea how much chicks dig my hair! 8) (although if I have a ponytail with my fringe thingy free I become a trap) I play way too much video games (RPGs, action, horror etc) and spend way too much time on the Internet. Surprisingly enough, I actually also do exercise (!), my sport being Aikidõ. I've been doing Aikidõ for about a year now and my grade is 6 kyu lol. I'm on my third and final year in high school / sixth form / whatevs.
I've been experimenting with the RPG Maker series ever since I was 12. I started with 2k and 2k3, now I'm using 2k3 and XP. I've never gotten anything actually done, although I managed to pull off a short demo with an Internet friend and make a small and overly simple CBS with 2k3. Right now I have a project for XP which is in desperate need of a spriter or two. I think I'll make a thread of it soon. I'm also working on a small custom experience system for 2k3.

Gotta go back to school now, so I'll post something later. o/
