Life, in all it's glory, has forced me out of a bottleneck, and now I'm finally on the other side... 2012, I believe, doesn't signify the end of the world. It signifies the end of an era. And beyond lie the waves of great change. Even with all the shit that I'm having to deal with, life never looked so promising to me. And you guys are a part of inspiring that feeling.

Since I started to work, I realized that my time on Chaos Project has been very fruitful. I've learned a lot from you guys (a shoutout to you Blizzard, for being my inspiration! :) ), and I am not just talking about coding. I may have been inactive for a long time, and it'll probably be like this for a while, but I'll always be here in spirit. For me, Chaos Project isn't just an online forum. For me, it's an important part of my life and a part of who I am. So yeah. You guys are awesome!  :buddy:

It seems that Fantasist and I have the near-exact same experience for the past few months...

Money or Passion

In regards to this topic, I'm sorry to disappoint those who voted but I chose the call center job. I am currently working as a Back Office agent for Time Warner Cable and is paying me with P14,000 ($335) a month with P2k ($45) allowance. As of now, I don't have a problem with the job since the money is pretty decent and the people are really nice. There's also a lot of perks like sleeping quarters so I don't have to commute and an in-house gym where I can use the treadmill all day. I'm interacting with people in ways I never thought I could and I am pretty confident that I matured significantly as a person. Although a job in game development would still be welcome, I am currently happy with what I have now. :)



I was also convinced by everyone's good ol' favorite troll to go vegan and am currently trying my best to remove any kind of animal product from my diet for the past month and a half. As of now, I am still at the lacto-vegetarian stage where I still consume dairy but I'm feeling that I can omit it in a few more weeks. I am ashamed, though, to admit that I ate nothing but meat this past weekend but I am starting anew this week by searching for that veggie shop I found off the internet. However, I am proud to announce that I dropped 4 kilos since I turned vegetarian and, hopefully, continue to lose weight for the next few months.

Well, that's my excuse why I've been inactive. Although, I do promise that I will be more active for the next few days as long as any of the following people are around:

Intelligent Debate / Money or Passion?

Recently, I just had the opportunity to choose between these two. :uhm:

I'm currently job hunting because I can't afford school for a while... But luckily, I was soon spotted by a game publishing company and was immediately "hired" as a game management personnel (GM and Mod)... Although I'm still a week away from the contract signing, I already feel like this job is where I should stick to, since it's the closest I could probably get to observing how the game industry works... :D

However, just yesterday, my mom and aunt found a call center job with the same salary but has better incentives like transportation and food allowances... Although it's not that much of a difference, it's still pretty decent considering that I won't have to pay for some of those and will just have to worry about the job... :^_^':

My big problem now is that I have no idea which one to choose... If I get the game job, I won't be able to save up faster for a laptop and might take half a year, and even the employer said that promotions are only given when absolutely needed... But I will love what I do... On the other hand, I never thought my talent for english, math and logic would be wasted on answering impatient customers... Sure, I'd have a decent pay but I don't like my job... I sure would love to take some extra dough for my folks, though... And it seems that promotions here are more often compared to the other one... :P

I'm really confused right now and I know I'm not very good at making decisions on my own so I'd like to have some external opinions... :3

And if you were in my situation, what do you think you would choose? :)

General Discussion / Faceset Vs. Character Bust

I've been thinking which would be better to use for my game, facesets or  character busts. For those who don't know what I'm talking about:

Yeah, I know... It sucks... :P


Originally, I planned to use character busts for my game because I thought not many indie games do that, and that would give a more detailed visualization of the characters' physical appearance... However, try as I might, it just doesn't come out as I imagined... I tried looking for graphic artists but the good ones want to be paid, which I just can't afford...  :<_<:

On the other hand, facesets are free and can be generated easily with a program... It would also be a lot easier to generate various emotions for each character depending on the dialogue... Although it's easier, it just doesn't compare to a character bust...  :(

If I would continue making my own character busts, it would feel more fulfilling and I'd be more satisfied, but it might take forever for me to finish one for each main character...  :^_^':

I'm at a loss right now, so I want opinions... Though your opinions will affect my final decision, it will still be my own decision so don't worry about being blamed... :D

->If you've read my post in the Welcome section, you might know now that I'm currently busy being the project leader of 2 thesis projects: Computer Programming 3 and Philippine Literature... Well I've got great news, I JUST GOT FREAKIN' ASSIGNED AS A PROJECT LEADER IN ANOTHER THESIS PROJECT!!!  :facepalm:

This time, it's Design & Structure of Algorithms... We're supposed to "Pseudo-Reverse Engineer" any game in order to get  the algorithm used on the game and present it to a panel of judges... Basically, we're gonna read stuff from games to learn how it functions... Being a game developer myself, I somehow felt confident that I can do this easily... I even have my own game that I can present to them... :D

Then it hit me...

Currently, I'm considering:

->I'm a Computer Science major, currently the project leader for our Computer Programming 3 thesis... Despite being the project leader, I do all the work... Background Story



*Note: Background story from original Project Wipe Thread

       Magic & technology, though separate & incompatible with each other, coexist in the world of Cinxis. Technology cannot influence or affect magic, while spells cannot alter, & sometimes even destroy, the results of machines. Though neither can be used with the other, both methods are accepted by civilization. Technology-users are known as Technicians while magic-users are called Arcanists.

       Technicians & Arcanists do not bother the other in their respective fields, but a young Technician named Devon unintentionally creates a technology-dispelling machine without realizing it. He was originally making a time machine that requires the fabled Mana Stone, the rarest & most Mana-filled substance in the world, as the source of power but something unexpected ocurred. Upon finishing the machine, he tested it out, but it only ended up destroying every form of machinery in the whole continent of Epia, the biggest continent in the world, nearly incapacitating the continent for a whole year. Knowing he would be in trouble if he confesses that he made the huge chaos, he never told anyone about it & hid the machine in an island on the Fenya continent which is under the Arcanist territory.

       Technicians around Epia blamed Arcanists for the accident now known as "The Wipe", since magic was proven to destroy most technology. The Spell Circle, a group of high-ranking Arcanists, denied that such a big accident was caused by mere spells. The misunderstanding grew into an argument, the argument slowly became fights, & the fights finally lead to a declaration of war between the two groups. The war went on for 14 years.

       But what they didn't know was The Wipe altered a select few, and these people will determine the future of Cinxis...




Main Story



       The events that happen in this demo occurs between Wipe's background story and the beginning of the full game. The three main characters (Rayse, Rhia & Vinz) are still in the Magic Academy in their final year. See what Arcanist students do with their daily school lives, and experience Wipe's main features!

   Rayse is an energetic but not very talented Arcanist who just graduated from the Magic Academy with friends Rhia & Vinz. He always wanted to be a member of The Spell Circle. He always talks about how a great Spellmaster (member of The Spell Circle) he would be, but easily loses focus. Unlike those who were assigned to retrieve the Mana Stone, he volunteered hoping that it will help his chances to becoming a Spellmaster. He is the destined hero of this game.

Race: Forest Elf
Gender: Female
Class: Mage

Bio:

   Rhia is an honor student in the Magic Academy & a friend of Rayse & Vinz for a long time. She keeps score of the two every time they compete with each other. Despite being a forest elf, she left her village & decided to learn magic than hunt with a bow like most forest elves. Rhia became friends with Rayse & Vinz when she rescued them from a wild Kergan when the two were just little. Though she's usually calm ,at times, she can get pretty loud when she's annoyed.

   Vinz is an exceptional Mage, able to cast mid-level spells as a freshman. He is calm, but whenever there is competition, he jumps straight at it & usually faces Rayse in the finals. Vinz is the grandson of Spellmaster Seth, one of the original founders of The Spell Circle. He is moody, which annoys Rhia, and ends up either being cheered up by Rayse or having a dare with him. He doesn't really care much about his future, knowing that his grandfather is a Spellmaster. He'd rather hang out with Rayse & Rhia than learn advance-level spells from Spellmaster Seth.

- Peaceful Days is meant to be a demo of the Wipe series. A prologue if you will. Instead of producing one whole game, the project will be split up into chapters. Consider this game as Chapter 0.5 of the game. (Disc changer script will be used)

- Too much rubbish in your inventory? Turn it into something useful using Alchemy! Read a few recipes in the Library and you may create some very useful items. Be careful though, because using the wrong ingredients will cause your alchemy to fail and your items will disappear.

• Gardening System

- Most potions are merely extracts from various plants and flowers, slightly made more potent with enchantment. Purchase seeds from town and plant them in the school greenhouse. After a few days, it will sprout into something useful like a recovery item or an essential alchemy compound.

• Expected at least 1 hour game length

- this includes the cutscenes, tutorials and main quests. However, if you are a "completionist" and would like to defeat all the bosses, finish all of the side quests and conquer all the minigames, it would probably double, heck, even triple your total game time.

- Want more of the game? Multiple side quests that reward you accordingly will keep you busy and can be repeated as many times as you want after you finish the game. Wanna take a break from the action? Play a few of the many minigames to be implemented. I even dare you to master one!

- If you want to fight a boss that you have already defeated but don't want to go through the trouble of going to the last room of a dungeon, just pay a small fee and fight it in the Summoning Room!

- This game was developed, firstly, to be an example game for Blizz-ABS, utilizing and explaining most of its main features that will also be used in future Wipe games. Secondly, it is a game designed to have unlimited replay value, with lots of customization possibilities with quests and minigames that will never get boring.

- This feature is still pending, but may be implemented if there is still time. Instead of having a fixed set of stats for your familiar, it can get strong or weak depending on how you raise it. Feed it the right food and choosing the right decisions can make it a reliable ally, but raise it poorly and it will be useless.

       Sorry for no Screenshots and lousy project thread. I'll fix it in a while. The reason why I'm starting fresh is because the original Project Wipe was a little overambitious. My aim was 20+ hours of game play and a crapload of features that are probably not even possible. Although I'm still planning on finishing the original game, this short demo with a target of 3 hours of gameplay serves as a preview for the game and an ad of sorts to attract possible team members. Its first goal is to be moved to the main Projects board and can even be a Blizz-ABS example game, since I'm focusing on skill graphics and combos. Anyways, hope you'll like it, and I'm looking forward to having you in the world of Cinxis! :haha:

       I added quite a few screenshots in the Screenshots section (where else? :V: ) and gave away a few sneak peeks at Wipe's possible features. Please note that these aren't all the maps in Wipe. Also, I know it's still deserted, so I think I might recruit an eventer soon to make random events all over the place. :P

       I'd also like to give a big shoutout to Fantasist for accepting the Title/Gameover designer position! Thanks a lot! :haha:

The minimap looks kinda ugly, so I just want to block out those passable cells at the top, after the counter... I've tried using an impassable & invisible dummy tile but there are parts that can't have it... Help? Thanks in advance!  :haha:

But I highly doubt it since I didn't do anything ban-worthy anyway, most people even did worse... :xD:

Instructions

What you'll need:

   • 3 Common Events
   • 1 Switch
   • 1 State
   • 1 (or more) Skill/s (I'll explain later)

1. Make a Switch named "Always" or "Regen" and activate it on your 1st map with an autorun/parallel process event. (Since it will be active all throughout the game)
2. Make a state and name it "Off-Battle". Remove the check in the "Release at the end of battle" box and set its rating to 10.
3. Make a Common Event and name it "Regen". Set its trigger to Parallel and its switch to "Always" and insert these into Regen:

Note: You can change the Wait to how long you want the interval between heal waves, "17" in the 3rd line to the Off-Battle state, and the "1" in the 4th line to the value you want to regenerate.
4. Make another Common Event named "Auto Off-Battle". Set its trigger to Parallel and its switch to "Always" and insert these into Common Event:

5. Make a third Common Event and name it "Activate On-Battle". Set its trigger to "None" and insert these:

6. Make a skill named "Attack" and set its parameters to how you want an enemy would normally attack. Or alternatively, make a separate "Attack" skill for every monster (like I did)to have a variation depending on the monster. Have the attack's & all the other skills' Common Event set to "Activate On-Battle". Pictures explain better than words.

It's a game that uses BABS as its main battle system & uses SpiritMeld System, a renamed Chaos Drive System, as its main feature (NOTE: SpiritMeld System is replaced by Summoning System in demo). I've worked alone for a while back then but I realized these things can't be done alone. That's why right now, I'm trying to find people who are willing to make this project a reality... The following positions are currently open:

      • 2 spriters (template used should be RTP)
      • 2-3 scripters (to script & troubleshoot)
      • 1 graphic artist for character portraits
      • 1-2 Title/GameOver Graphics Designers
      • 1-2 Sound Effects (maker/specialst?)

Wipe




Background Story



       Magic & technology, though separate & incompatible with each other, coexist in the world of Cinxis. Technology cannot influence or affect magic, while spells cannot alter, & sometimes even destroy, the results of machines. Though neither can be used with the other, both methods are accepted by civilization. Technology-users are known as Technicians while magic-users are called Arcanists.

       Technicians & Arcanists do not bother the other in their respective fields, but a young Technician named Devon unintentionally creates a technology-dispelling machine without realizing it. He was originally making a time machine that requires thr fabled Mana Stone, the rarest & most Mana-filled substance in the world, as the source of power but something unexpected ocurred. Upon finishing the machine, he tested it out, but it only ended up destroying every form of machinery in the whole continent of Epia, the biggest continent in the world, nearly incapacitating the continent for a whole year. Knowing he would be in trouble if he confesses that he made the huge chaos, he never told anyone about it & hid the machine in an island on the Fenya continent which is under the Arcanist territory.

       Technicians around Epia blamed Arcanists for the accident now known as "The Wipe", since magic was proven to destroy most technology. The Spell Circle, a group of high-ranking Arcanists, denied that such a big accident was caused by mere spells. The misunderstanding grew into an argument, the argument slowly became fights, & the fights finally lead to a declaration of war between the two groups. The war went on for 14 years.

       But what they didn't know was The Wipe altered a selected few, and these people will determine the future of Cinxis...




Main Story



       Devon, now a Head Technician, leads a great fleet of War Hammers (giant robots) in the war & commands the Apocalypsis, one of the four G.E.A.R.s (Gyroblade Equipped Assault Robot) that are supposedly the most powerful weapons of war in the Technicians' arsenal. His invention is still hidden & unknown in a cave in the island of Paroi, but now, with the war going on, monsters have left the battle-scarred forests & deserts to migrate to Paroi island.

       The now monster-infested cave makes hiding the machine that caused "The Wipe" be extremely dangerous since monsters can be curious & the device itself is very unstable & unpredictable. Devon found about this but he can't go in because of the great number of monsters in the island.

       As he reviewed the blueprints of the device, he found out that the device he created did not only short out machines during "The Wipe", but also released a wave of pure magic which was supposed to be impossible. The wave of magic wasn't that strong when "The Wipe" occurred, but now, the Mana Stone seems to have a stronger glow compared to the last time the device was used which may cause more than just destruction of machines. Strangely, the monsters around Paroi Island have become noticeably stronger & some have even developed the ability to use spells only known to humans.

       The Spell Circle has taken notice of Commander Devon's concern about the monsters in Paroi Island so they've sent out scouting summoners to have their elementals investigate what's going on in the island.

       The Spell Circle was astonished when they found out about the device & the power source it uses, the Mana Stone. Being knowledgeable in magic, they immediately knew the effect of the stone to the machine & the possible coming of "The Great Wipe", with the destructive power of "The Wipe" hundredfold, which may cause monsters to be extremely powerful & exhaust both technology & magic completely. The Spell Circle has sent out messengers for the Technicians about considering peace & hoping to end the war but because of lack of proof, the Technicians didn't believe that one of their top commanders caused "The Wipe", which only made the them think it was a trap.

       Now, with the war still unresolved, The Spell Circle has assigned young Arcanists from the Magic Academy of Arcanum to form their own party & devise a strategy on how to retrieve the Mana Stone & end the war.

Rhia became friends with Rayse & Vinz when she rescued them from a wild Kergan when the two were just little. Though she's usually calm ,at times, she can get pretty loud when she's annoyed.

Vinz is the grandson of Spellmaster Seth, one of the original founders of The Spell Circle. He is moody, which annoys Rhia, and ends up either being cheered up by Rayse or having a dare with him. He doesn't really care much about his future, knowing that his grandfather is a Spellmaster. He'd rather hang out with Rayse & Rhia than learn advance-level spells from Spellmaster Seth.

   Creaux is a cleric in the small elven village of Noeia. Bearing the Mark of the Guardian ever since he was born, he was chosen to protect Mi-Ma, the village elder, having him forced to become a cleric. Creux never wanted to be a cleric because he always wanted to fight. This is the reason why he trains with both rod & axe & he is able to use both depending on the situation.

   Forest Elves aren't really born, they come from the Tree of Life. When they are "born", they already look like young adults but they still age. 50 years of aging as a human is equal to 1 year of aging as an elf.

   Sonia is a gunslinger extraordinaire from Linia City. She was orphaned by the war, having both her parents taken prisoner by the Arcanists. Because of this, she held a grudge towards all Arcanists. After her parents' capture, she was forced to live on her own so she learned how to handle the gun her father left to her and soon, she became a master gunslinger. At the age of 14, she became a member of a hunting guild & as time passed, she became very famous being known as "Sonia of the Thousand Bullets" being the only person in the world who is able to wield up to 4(!) guns all at the same time. She believes in fate & usually lets fate decide for herself.

       Sorry for not having anything but the story & concept. It's because I had my computer reformatted. Anyway, I'm currently working alone in this project & was forced to start from scratch. Resource & Mapping help would be greatly appreciated though it wasn't originally planned. Here are a few open positions:

      • Spriters (for both weapons & characters)
      • Mappers
      • Testers (upon finishing at least the first demo)
      • Scripters (who will check errors for me since I usually have problems)
      • Expert artists (to draw "facesets" that aren't exactly facesets but character pictures to display whole-body expression/emotion/motion)

       I'll be looking forward for feedback & criticism. Thanks! ^^

       7 days since last update... Sorry, school was getting in the way... :^_^':

       Recruited Square Man as a new mapper.

       First boss sprites 100% complete! Great job dwellercoc! :haha:

       Features re-scaled to what is sure to be added.

       First demo should be 50% complete. Only things missing are the Sprites for the 3 main characters, Caan Plains map, mini-world map, a few of the custom enemy sprites & the eventing. Eventing on the game will begin when all resources & maps have been passed. This gives Wipe members the time to kick back & relax for a job well done. :haha:

       13-day gap from last update?! Sorry if updates are getting slow, some stuff are happening IRL.

       New Vinz & Rayse sprites finished! Rhia sprite to be edited in a day or maybe a bit later.

       Thanks to dwellercoc, demo will now include 100% fully non-RTP mobs.

       Square Man requested he's changed from mapper to windowskin artist. Congrats Square Man! You are now Wipe's windowskin artist! :haha:

       Most Team Wipe members are active again... Thanks for the support guys! :D

       I might try to improve the game graphically so I might move the demo release date back a month or two... If you want it earlier, I'll move it earlier again but it won't include the additional graphics... When at least 5 people want it earlier, it'll be moved back to late September to mid October.

       Sorry for being a bit lazy... Well here's what Wipe's demo have got so far:

       • Mapping is about 85% complete, only things missing are a forest & a small part of the world map.
       • I'm starting to work on the actual demo, rather than the one I've been passing to members.
       • About 25% of the intro is complete, except the mecha sprites aren't done yet.
       • Player & Enemy stats have been scaled to match & balanced. First boss is at about difficulty 3.0/5.0.
       • Quests still being given thought, but will surely be added. About 5-10 sidequests will be in the demo, though none is being worked on yet.
       • 2 enemies added into demo database. Only skills right now are fire & heal. More will be added later & be given different names.
       • Following scripts are currently being used:
              - BABS
              - about less than 5% of Tons of Add-ons
              - Chaos Drive System from CRLS (still trying to figure out how to effectively use it)
              - more will be added later on
       • Event systems currently being used:
              - Off-battle Regeneration System
              - sorry, just one for now... I'll make sure to think of something soon
       • About 70% of the custom sprites are done:
              - Rayse & Vinz normal & defend sprites=100%. Dash sprites=30%
              - enemies for the first dungeon
              - 3 staffs & 2 projectiles
              - 2 cameos. 1 from a PS2 game & another from a movie :haha:
              - expecting Rhia sprite. Still needs a mecha spriter. Working on a few other sprites...
       • About 10% of the music:
              - 2 BGMs. One is a rock version from the Megaman series & another is a piano song composed by yours truly
              - more to be added soon

->Hey,, was wondering what are the best coordinates to use for a 48x48 faceset if I'm using the default message window... I'd like to know for both the left & right so I can alternate the position of the facesets, as if they were talking...

BTW, I also want to know If recruiting a team is better than giving my story to one of the admins/best RPG makers here so they can complete it... I'm having a few problems at school so I only have time to continue making the my RPG during weekends & vacation, which is why I'm still in the middle of finishing the storyline!!! I really want my game published, but I'm also afraid that the proper credits will not be given or my project will be stolen that's why I still don't make a thread for my game in the New Projects section... I'm pretty confident that my game is big, but the problem is I'm not really a good scripter, mapper, spriter, & eventer. I'm just a storyteller with very little time... Hope I could either get a good team or get a pretty honest admin/designer...
