Chat / The Official Pony Topic
June 02, 2011, 12:58:02 am
It is becoming apparent that a topic of this nature might be appreciated, so here it is.

First item of business: who is your favorite pony and why?

I feel somewhat hypocritical asking that, as I personally am unable to pick a favorite, because I like all of them.

This is my first tutorial video, so a little feedback would be appreciated. You can find it here:

It was on sale on Steam so I bought a copy, but I haven't played it yet because I'm worried about playing a team-oriented game without having any knowledge about it or how to play - I'll probably just get yelled at and kicked for being such a bad teammate. If I had someone else on my team that I knew, though, then I wouldn't feel so nervous. Does anyone else here play, and if so, would they like to try a round or two with me?

Video Games / A "Let's Play?"
May 11, 2011, 11:54:49 pm
I've been thinking about making a series of "Let's Play" videos. I think it would be fun, and you'll all get to know me a little better by hearing what I sound like and act like when I'm not posting on a forum. However, there are a couple issues. Firstly, I'd be using up time that might better be spent doing something more productive, such as working on SoD. Secondly, I'd have to decide on a game, and there hasn't been anything recently that's really caught my eye.

What do you all think? Should I create a few videos, or would it just be a waste of time? If you think I should do it, feel free to suggest a game. I'd prefer if it's something I haven't played, but maybe something that I haven't played for a very long time would be even more interesting.

Basics & Features / Message System
May 03, 2011, 11:52:47 am
What type of message system would you all like to see in the game? Personally, I'm not opposed to just using the UMS, as many of us are familiar with the tag codes used in it, and it has pretty much every feature that we would need. If anyone else wants to nominate some other message system, or thinks that we should just create our own, feel free to voice your opinion.

Even if we decide to use an already created system such as the UMS, we still need to come up with exactly how we want things to look.

Some things that need discussion:

  • Usage of facesets. Should we use them at all? If so, where should we place them? Should we have multiple faces for each character showing a variety of emotions, or just one face for each?
  • Windowskin. Self-explanatory. Regardless of what message system we use, we're going to need some sort of windowskin.
  • Name windows. Should they be used in addition to or in lieu of facesets?
  • Letter/word appearance. All at once, or more slowly, to imitate actual speech?
  • Message skipping. Should the player pressing/holding the button skip messages, or just speed them up considerably?

Here are my personal opinions on these issues:

Adding multiple facesets for each of the main characters would add a lot of personality to their dialogue, and would make the game seem more immersive, so I think it's optimal to do so, if our artists are up to it.
I think we should use both facesets and name windows for standard dialogue, and just name windows for shorter dialogue or one-liners.
The window skin should be something on the darker side. Maybe a dark amber colour would look nice. We should choose something that goes with the rest of the artistic style of the game.
I think letters should appear individually, but fairly quickly. When the player holds down the button, it should speed up considerably.

    One other thing:

As I mentioned in the story thread, there are a couple features I would like to implement, regardless of what system we use. These aren't entirely necessary to the game, but I think that they would be nice:

  • Combat dialogue - characters would have things to say to each other every once and a while during battle, perhaps regarding what they are fighting or a recent plot event. These would probably use a name-window only (not a faceset.) We will need to make sure our combat system is capable of displaying messages in battle.

  • Travelling dialogue - this might be a little more difficult to implement; I'm not sure if the UMS is capable of this. If it is possible, however, I'd like to see it implemented. Basically, while walking around, every once in a while the characters would talk to each other regarding various issues or plot events that have occurred. This dialogue would be automated; the player would have no control over it, as their controls would still have to be used for moving around. They would have to still be able to move and activate events while the dialogue is occurring. Any event that occurred would interrupt the dialogue. This was very well implemented in Dragon Age, and added a lot of personality and depth to the characters. However, DA used voice acting, making the system easier to pull off. It's my opinion that we could still do something similar using dialogue windows, but I may be mistaken. The windows would have to be as unobtrusive as possible, so we would probably only use name windows, not facesets, for these conversations.

Story & Themes / Romance Subplot?
April 28, 2011, 02:59:11 am
I feel a little embarrassed posting about something silly like this, but I've been working on the story, and the question has arisen in my mind of how deep I should take any possible romance sub-plot. This being our community project, I wanted to get everyone's input, so please vote in the above poll. Here are the voting options explained in a little more detail.

  • Not at all -- There would be no intentionally romantic situations in the game at all. The main character's relations with each other will remain strictly friendly (or familial, in William and Gerald's case.)
Games that have implemented this style include Mother 3, Dragon Quest IX, and Secret of Mana.

  • Hinted at, but very fully stated -- Romance would never really be a part of the story, but occasionally hints might be dropped of one character having feelings for another. It would never be expressly stated, and would minimally impact the story.
Games that have implemented this style include Chaos Project, Super Mario RPG, and Earthbound.

  • Fully formed and present -- One or more romantic relationships would be present in the story, and would evolve over the course of the story. Things would never overshadow the main storyline, but the sub-plot would be obviously present and written into the story.
This is probably the most common implementation. Games that have implemented this style include Final Fantasy IV, VI, VII, VIII, IX, and X, Chrono Trigger & Cross, and a variety of other games.

  • Fully present, and integrated into gameplay -- This option is slightly different from the others, but definitely a valid alternative. The player, as William, would be given the choice to pursue a romantic relationship with any one (or, if the player plays their cards right, multiple) female character. This would have a minor but still visible effect on some scenes in the story. It is also a possibility that the player's choices would have a small impact on the gameplay itself. If we decide to go with this option, the details would have to be further discussed.
Examples of games with a limited implementation of a system like this include Final Fantasy VII and X. Examples of games with an extensive implementation of a system like this include Persona 3 and 4, Dragon Age, and Mass Effect.

  • Other -- None of the above. Please post and describe your feelings on the matter.

My laptop has been getting very high core temperatures recently. They're usually around 60° C just idle. Normal temperatures for a laptop should be in the high forties. I clean out the vents and fans regularly. I would assume that this means the thermal paste for my processor is wearing out and needs to be replaced, but this laptop isn't even a year old. My processor is a Core i7 720QM. Does anyone have any ideas on why it's acting this way, or what I could do to fix it?

Programming / Scripting / Web / Requesting a Program
April 15, 2011, 07:49:49 pm
Don't worry, it should be somewhat simple, but it's just a bit beyond the scope of my abilities.

Basically, I need (well, don't need, really; want would be more appropriate,) is a program somewhat similar to G_G's Spritesheet GIF creator, but rather than creating a .gif, it creates an RMXP spritesheet from some other type of spritesheet.

It would work like this:

Select an image to use.
Input the number of columns and rows the image is split into.
Select which frames you want to use in the new spritesheet.
New spritesheet is generated and saved.

I don't think it would be that much trouble to make, and I'm sure many people, including myself, would get a lot of use out of it. If anyone wants to take a few minutes and do this for me, I would be very appreciative.

Entertainment / Chaos Project: A Doodle
April 04, 2011, 08:22:48 pm
I threw together a quick doodle. Sorry if you're not in it - I was starting to run out of room, so I couldn't fit in everyone I wanted to.
The picture turned out alright, but let me know if I need to clarify something. I can also retake pictures of specific areas if you'd like to see something in more detail.

Warning: Large Image: ShowHide

EDIT: Replaced image with scan; a lot higher quality now.

Chat / Post what you THINK other users look like
April 04, 2011, 05:44:57 pm
Rules:
  • Post what you think one of the other users here on CP looks like. Though using a picture of an actual person is the idea, it's not required, thus images of fictional characters, artwork, inanimate objects, etc., are permitted.
  • Don't go visit the "Post of picture of yourself" thread and look for an image of someone until after you've posted them.
  • If you've already seen a picture of someone, you can still post about them, as you may not remember it exactly, or maybe despite knowing what they look like, you always envision them differently.

None of these rules will be strictly enforced - they're more like guidelines, really - but I think that they will help this thread be a little more entertaining.
This thread should be an interesting experience, as users will be able to see how others see them, which is something I always find fascinating.

I just logged in and saw what happened, and I don't think this is the right way of resolving the problem. I know you and Blizz aren't on the best terms right now, but I think the two of you should talk and get this worked out. Everyone has times when they have disagreements, and if you and Blizz would just discuss things I think you will be able to solve this problem without having to resort to banning or anything like that. Would you at least consider it? Please? I really love this forum and don't want to see it torn apart because of a silly fight. :(

Story & Themes / Gerald Discussion
March 03, 2011, 07:19:22 pm
"OLD WIZARD"
Name: Gerald
Age: Probably forties or fifties.
Gender: Male
Appearance: To be determined
Occupation: Wizard
Class Role: Mage; very high damage output, very frail.
Personality: Generally quiet and professional, usually has decent advice. Stays out of the way.

BACKSTORY:
He is a member of the underground apostate faction of the church (at the moment; this could change as we further develop the story) and is their representative in the party. No other backstory has been developed for him yet.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHER CHARACTERS:

(This section will be filled out a little later as we get the characters more worked out.)

Due to being the oldest, this character will probably have the most backstory out of the main characters. Let's start putting it together. :)

Story & Themes / Robin Discussion
March 03, 2011, 07:05:07 pm
"WANDERING BARD"
Name: Robin (possibly with a different given name)
Age: Late teens
Gender: Female
Appearance: I envision her wearing brightly coloured clothes and some sort of crazy hat with feathers in it (somewhat musketeer style.) This might just be me, though - this is of course open to suggestions.
Occupation: Wandering bard
Class Role: Thief/rogue role; also has some supportive abilities. High damage output, somewhat frail.
Personality: Loud, cheerful, loves telling stories and playing songs. Can be annoying at times.

BACKSTORY:
She probably lived with the others in her traveling caravan of bards, traveling between towns collecting the latest stories and gossip. Because of this, she probably has a massive repertoire of songs and tales memorized. She's also likely to be known, at least somewhat, in some of the locations the party visits.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHER CHARACTERS:

(This section will be filled out a little later as we get the characters more worked out.)

Story & Themes / Alice Discussion
March 03, 2011, 06:48:21 pm
"NOBLE AVENGER"
Name: Alice
Age: Early twenties
Gender: Female
Appearance: To be determined
Occupation: Noble lady of a royal family, but they were killed and she is tracking down the killer.
Class Role: Warrior and damage sponge. High stamina and defense, and pretty good attacking power.
Personality: Brash, cynical, generally aggressive. Can be somewhat cold-hearted and unfriendly.

BACKSTORY:
Her family was somehow killed by someone or other and she is out to find the murderer. This needs to be fleshed out considerably.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHER CHARACTERS:

(This section will be filled out a little later as we get the characters more worked out.)

Like the main character, a name is important; it might come later, however. I think it should be something "noble" sounding, but not too over the top. Any suggestions?

Story & Themes / William Discussion
March 03, 2011, 06:43:40 pm
This thread is for discussion of the main character. I'll keep this first post updated with the most current outline.

MAIN CHARACTER
Name: William
Age: Late teens
Gender: Male
Appearance: To be determined
Occupation: Not yet a full-fledged member of the Church, but very close to taking his vows.
Class Role: Healing and support magic at first, but is able to supplement with various other things such as melee combat, as he is not yet a Church member and thus not restricted from doing so. The player is given control over his growth, so eventually he can be anything from a full healer to a melee fighter to a spell caster.

PERSONALITY:
He is well-learned from growing up in the Church, the most prominent place of learning in this setting. Though he has natural leadership ability, he is still young and tends to slip up and make mistakes. He is also somewhat young, and this can occasionally be seen in his choice of actions. As the game progresses, he becomes not only a better leader, but more mature.

BACKSTORY:
Not much yet; I don't think we should give the main character too much backstory, as leaving it a little vague would allow the player to better relate to him, as they could envision their own sort of history for him.

RELATIONSHIPS WITH OTHER CHARACTERS:

(This section will be filled out a little later as we get the characters more worked out.)

I think right now the most important thing to come up with is a name. Any suggestions?

Song of Destruction - Story

The Story So Far....: ShowHide
The tavern was the same as any other night; even from the outside, the noisy racket and clatter of the patrons could be heard. The bard gave a light hiccup as she drained the last few drops of ale from her glass, sliding it across the table to join its rapidly growing congregation of brethren. "Alright, alright, one more," she said with feigned reluctance. Despite her obvious intoxication, her voice was surprisingly clear. There was a roar from the boisterous crowd as she hoisted her thin frame up on the table; the barkeep's smile lessened a little as she set her muddy, travel-worn boots upon a chair. Paying him no mind, she unslung her instrument from her shoulder. After a few sour and dissonant chords, her slightly fogged mind remembered how to play the unusual contraption, and slowly, a flowing, lilting melody filled the room, piercing the murky din like a fresh breeze. The atmosphere settled into one of quiet, almost reverent, anticipation. She added several extra bars to the tune as she mentally stumbled about her drunken mind, finding all of the shards of the tale and quickly knitting them together as best she could. By now, there were few that hadn't heard this particular yarn, but it had quickly become a favorite - possibly because there were still those trying to pick out the truths from the typical bardic embellishments. The bard allowed herself a grin; she was one of the few people who knew for a fact that the whole thing was true. The last few notes of her prelude still hanging in the air in silent resonation, she began her tale.

[Backstory describing history of Creators, Church, magic, etc. goes here; haven't gotten around to typing it up yet since I wanted to get started on the main story.]

Lighting his prayer candles, Father Theris knelt and began his morning invocation. Almost as soon as his knees touched the cold, tiled floor of the chapel, however, he heard a youthful voice pipe up behind him. "Um... pardon me, Father. I hope I'm not interrupting... " The elderly priest sighed. It was William.
"You've misplaced your prayer book again, haven't you?" he said, rising to his feet with a patient smile. William said nothing, but the expression on his face was affirmation enough. "You really ought to be more careful with such things, my son. The sacred texts are not to be taken lightly."
"Yes, I know. I'm sorry, Father; I tend to be a little absent-minded about such things. I will accept any punishment you see fit to give me," William repied, though he inwardly cringed at the thought of being on dishes duty again.
"Of all of the doctrines given to us by the Holy Overgod," Father Theris said, approaching the young priest, "one of my favorites is that of forgiveness. Visit Brother Josef in the library - he will provide you with another copy until you've located your own."
"Thank you, Father!" said William with a sigh of relief. He turned to leave, but then, remembering, turned back to his elder and bowed. "May the Overgod watch over you."
"And you as well, my son." Watching the young man leave the chapel, the old man chuckled lightly. William certainly hadn't changed much since he had been brought to the chapel seventeen years ago. It was hard to believe that he would be taking his vows in just a few months, becoming a full-fledged member of the clergy. They truly did grow up quickly. A smile still on his face, the priest turned back to the alter to finish his prayers.

His newly borrowed prayer book in hand, the young cleric began to make his way from the library back to the main living quarters. It was late, after all, and he was looking forward to a good night's sleep. He stopped, however, when he heard a rustling from the other side of the wall surrounding the temple grounds. Strange.... The temple was in an isolated location several miles away from the main city. Travelers around here were rare, and having them this far off the main path was even more unusual. Coupled with the fact that it was the middle of the night.... Perhaps it was... a thief? Starting to feel panic welling up inside him, William took a deep breath. He glanced around; no one else was here. Evening prayers had concluded a few hours ago - the other priests were all asleep. It was up to him to investigate. Finding a foothold on the wall, he boosted himself up and looked over the top of it. The foliage in the grove of trees surrounding the temple grounds was shaking, despite the lack of wind. Someone had just entered the grove... meaning that there was definitely someone out there. William gulped. It was up to him to go confront whoever was out there. Maybe they were just a lost traveler or something... he hoped. Saying a quick prayer to the Overgod for safety, he boosted himself the rest of the way over the wall, and headed into the dark woods.

Wading through the tangle of trees and bushes, William caught sight of the tail of a dark cloak whipping out of sight. He almost called after whoever it was, but caught himself. If it was indeed a thief or a burglar, they might not think twice about hurting him. It would be best to remain hidden and catch them by surprise. Trying his best to be as silent as possible, he followed the stranger, just seeing a fleeting glimpse of him from time to time. After a minute or two, he heard voices from nearby. There must be others here as well. Straining his ears, he tried to make out what they were saying. It sounded almost familiar.... With a strange jolt, he realized why - they were speaking in the same ancient language used in various prayers. Curious.... Though he wasn't fluent in the language - even many of the high ranking priests only knew the prayers by route memorization - he was almost able to make out their conversation. He took a step closer, trying to hear... a branch snapped loudly as he placed his foot upon it. The conversation stopped. William winced; they must have heard him. After a moment of tense silence, he took a step backwards... and bumped right into a cloaked figured. Before he could even gasp, the figure placed his hand over William's mouth, and dragged him into a nearby clearing, where several other similarly dressed figures were sitting. Talking very quickly, they conversed in their strange language. One of them approached, looking him over. The figure said something to the man holding him. William felt a sharp pain in the back of his head, and blacked out.

Two things immediately came to William's mind when he awoke. Firstly, that it was very dark. Secondly, that it was very hot. He blinked a few times, trying to get his eyes accustomed to the darkness, but it was futile. Where was he? Racking his brain, he tried to think of what had happened since he had met the group of robed figures in the forest, but it was useless - he didn't recall anything. He must have been unconscious this whole time. From somewhere nearby, he heard a commotion - shouting and the clang of weapons could faintly be heard. Seconds after the noise stopped, there was the loud grating of a heavy metal door opening, and the room he was in flooded with light. Blinking, he was able to make out the silhouette of a figure wearing a suit of heavy armor standing in the doorway of the room, which he now could see was a small, prison cell-like chamber. Judging by the rough texture of the stone upon which he was sitting, it had probably been directly carved into a natural system of caverns. The figure mumbled something and turned to leave. "W-wait!" stammered William, getting clumsily to his feet. The figure turned back to him as if to respond, but before he could say anything, a shout echoed from the hallway outside.
"I found the prisoner! Over here, quickly!" His mysterious savior reached for his sword, but before he could draw it, he was overwhelmed by a number of armed cultists. William, trying to act quickly despite his pounding head and sleepy mind, quickly said a prayer of protection. For just a few seconds, the blows of the cultists were deflected from the armored figure, giving him enough time to draw his own weapon and counter attack. There followed a brief struggle; though the figure apparently knew his way with a sword, he didn't appear to be by any means a master of the weapon. Despite this, with William backing him up, he was able to defeat his aggressors. After delivering one last kick to finish off one of the cultists who had been struck to the ground, he turned back towards the cell, and pulled off his helmet. With a jolt, William realized that he was, in fact, a she. He hadn't noticed before, due the armor covering her face and body. Though under better circumstances she might have been attractive, at the moment, she just looked worn out yet aggressive, like a lioness after being stuck in a hunter's trap for a day or two. Her long, blonde hair was plastered to her head, and the dark circles under her bright blue eyes stood out sharply against her pale skin.
"Maybe you're not as useless as you look," she said, looking him over, unsmiling. Turning to leave, she added, "Well? Are you coming or not?"

Awkwardly, William hurried after her down the hallway. As he had thought, it wasn't a building so much as a natural system of caverns that had been adapted into a living area for a large amount of people. "Um, thank you for helping me," he said to his rescuer after a long period of silence.
"Mm," she replied in acknowledgement.
"I'm William, by the way. I don't think you ever mentioned your name... ?" William inquired, figuring it was about time for a proper introduction. She stopped and turned around.
"You're going to give away our position. Be quiet," she said, irritated.
"Oh, sorry."

"Alice," she said abruptly after they had gone a while further.
"Huh?"
"My name is Alice. You asked, remember?" Not stopping to look at him, they progressed further through the network of tunnels.

Original Story Concept: ShowHide
Alright, I modified my idea for the main story a bit so that it would fit well into all of our suggestions. It's a little generic, but sometimes that's not a completely bad thing. Here's what I have at the moment (obviously, it's still up in the air and open to suggestions:)

Thousands of years ago, the planet (Plant Name) was created by a race of super-powerful immortal beings (Gods? TItans?) They created all manner of plants and animals, and finally topped their creation with their crowning glory - based on themselves, they created three intelligent races: humans, elves, and dwarves. Satisfied with their creation, they left the young planet to its own and left to pursue other interests. (Creating other planets or something; who know? It's not important, at any rate.)

Many years later, while experimenting in the field of (something. Alchemy, maybe?) a human accidently discovered how to tap the power of the demonic Netherealm, leading to the discovery of magic. Using magic made day to day life much easier; things could get done quicker, faster, and more efficiently. In addition, combat reached a whole new level, with wizards and evokers joining the typical ranks of knights and archers. The use of magic quickly spread to the other races.

After a time, magical advancements grew so high that they hit a ceiling - using standard channeling techniques, it was impossible to draw any more energy from the Netherealm. Thus, a group of sorcerers began researching a technology that would allow parts of the realm itself to be pulled into the regular world, allow their power to be accessed directly.  The experiement was a success; direct links between the two worlds were able to be established. However, because of this, the evil contained in the demon realm seeped into the human world, causing a great amount of corruption.

It was around this time that the Creators returned to check up on their planet. They were appalled to see what had become of their world - the corruption had become so deep, they considered it uncurable. The only solution was the destruction of the planet.

However, through the use of magic, the intelligent races had become almost as powerful as the Creators themselves at this point, and they resisted. There was a massive war, lasting many years. The face of the planet itself was changed by the sheer power of the forces at work. Despite the power of the intelligent races, they began to be overpowered, due to the fact that the immortal Creators could only be fought back, but never destroyed. In desperation, they turned to a new source - the Church of the Overgod (the Creator of the Creators) was formed. Many turned to the new religion, using various means to try and contact the Overgod. Finally, contact was established, and an agreement was made. The Creators would be sealed in the core of the planet, unable to destroy their creations. In return, however, they were never again to tap into the powers of magic. The corruption would still remain - as the Creators had said, it had affected the planet to the extent that it could never be fully purged - but it would spread no further. The art of magic was lost.

Many thousands of years passed; records of these events were lost - history became legend and eventually myth. Technology began to replace magic; various creations were discovered, including the powerful steam engine, which allowed for quick transportation and steam powered machines.

So much time had weakened the seal on the prison of the Creators, however; after years of effort, they were able to send a message to an unsuspecting individual, telling him of their infinite power and promising him a spot in the New World if he were to help them escape. Lapping up their lies, this individual formed the Cult of Creation, a group sworn to unsealing the Creators. They went largely unnoticed, but slowly became closer and closer to their goal.

(Main character) was an alter boy in the Church of the Overgod in (some city name;) he had not yet taken his vows and become a full member of the clergy. Unknown to him, many aspects of the Church at this point had become corrupted through the sands of time - though large parts of it were correct, any other aspects had crept in over time. One day while out doing mundane tasks, he accidentally stumbles across a meeting of the Cult and is captured. With the help of another prisoner (second main party member,) he manages to escape, and in the process, get a hold of some of the Cult's sacred works. Reading over it, he realizes what they are trying to accomplish. He is determined to return it to his superiors and get their assistance, but was taken a long way from home after being captured. With the help of his new ally, he sets off on his journey to return home. After traveling for a while, they come across a group of traveling bards, with whom they group up and travel for a time. Determined to get their sacred text back, the caravan is attacked by the cultists; only one of them survives. The main character and his friend manage to escape safely; they meet up with the only surviving member of the caravan, who joins them, hoping to avenge her fallen friends (third main party member.)

A while later into the game, they finally make it back safely to the main character's home. He shows them the work of the Cultists, but, to his horror, they dismiss it as nonsense. He realizes that they won't be of any help bringing this cult to its knees. Having heard his tale through the storytelling of the bard, a group of sorcerers who have revived the ancient art of magic contact the main character and offer him their support.  He is at first unwilling to accept, as magic is against the code of his Church, but realizes that it's the only way to save the world. A representative from this group (fourth and last main character,) joins him, and they set off to find a way to destroy the evil cult.

That's all I have for now; I can post specifics on the characters and whatnot if people are interested, and of course pretty much everything in there can be modified in anyone has a better idea. Obviously there are a few loose ends that need tying up, and it's not written all the way to the end, but I think it's enough to get us started.

Original Character Concepts: ShowHide

Main Character

Age: Late teens, probably.

Personality: I was thinking somewhat silent-protagist-ish, but I could also see him as being a bit of a goody two-shoes.

Second Main Character
Age: Probably somewhere 18 - early twenties

Race: Probably human
Occupation: Noble lady of a royal family, but they were killed and she is tracking down the killer.

Third Main Character
Age: Probably in her thirties, but about the human equivalent of 17 - 19.
Race: Half-Elf (a rare race typically found only among unorthodox groups such as a traveling caravan of bards; humans and elves do not normally intermarry.)
Gender: Probably female
Occupation: Wandering bard
Class Role: Thief/rogue role; also has some supportive abilities. High damage output, somewhat frail.

News / Suggestions / Feedback / A Proposition
March 02, 2011, 12:23:05 pm
Valhira Online does not seem to be getting any further in development; Delusian hasn't been online since October, and the game's website hasn't been updated since then either. I think it is time to remove it from featured projects. This is, of course, just my opinion.

I knew this thread was trouble as soon as I saw the title. Back, demon! Back to the News/Suggestions/Feedback from whence you came!

Resource Requests / Need some Non-RTP Sprites Posed
January 10, 2011, 12:19:34 am
Hopefully, the fact that these sprites aren't RTP shouldn't be any trouble.

At any rate, I need to have poses created for the sprites of the three main characters of one of the games I'm working on.
Most of the posts will be single frames, so it should be a pretty easy task. If I were any better at spriting, I'd try it myself. Unfortunately, that's one area in which I am pretty much useless. :P

If any of you are good at this type of thing, I'd be grateful if you could lend me a hand. Just send me a PM if you'd like to take a whack at it and I'll send you the sprites and a few more specifics. Thanks in advance!

Township System
Version: 0.8
Type: Misc. System

Introduction

This system allows you to have the player essentially construct their own town in the game by hiring various people (carpenters, innkeepers, etc.) to build and run the town.

Features

  • Easy to modify.
  • Towns can be of any size.
  • Any number of people can be hired.
  • Hired people are separated into two categories: major and minor changes. Maps MUST be constructed for all possible combinations of major changes, so try to keep the number of large changes to a minimum unless you have a lot of time to spare setting up your maps.

Screenshots

Not available or necessary. See demo.

Demo

http://www.mediafire.com/?439dea1nc4q7xye

Instructions

In essence, you're just creating an event that transfers the player to a different map depending on which NPCs they've hired so far.
This system requires quite a few maps and events; please download and examine the demo for a better explanation and example.

Credits and Thanks

  • WhiteRose, for creating this system.
  • Dragonmanb, for requesting it.
  • The Breath of Fire team for the original concept.

Author's Notes

The demo isn't particularly extensive, but I figured it would be pretty easy to figure out once you've seen the basics. Let me know if I need to make a more advanced demo.

Well, it's not particularly fantastic at the moment, as I've only posted once due to having started it today, but I'm planning on keeping it somewhat current. Anyway, I figured I'd post a link in case any of you are interested in checking it out.

I think it might be nice if we make a separate section in the Script Database for Blizz-ABS add-ons. As it is, most of them are currently in the Battle Add-Ons section, which also works, but I think people might have an easier time if they have them all in one place. This is just an idea; I'm not going to offended if you'd rather keep them in the current arrangement, obviously. What do the rest of you think?

I've been working on my game, and there's one map that I just can't get right, so I was hoping someone else could help me out with it.
Here's what I need:

An evil lord's manor, approached at the middle of the night. The remainder of the game takes place inside the manor, so it has to be pretty big looking, though the party won't ever explore the exterior. They enter by hopping the railing onto a terrace, so a terrace is a must. I'm hoping that you can have some sort of night sky panorama behind the towers of the manor, but that's just how I envision it. It probably only needs to be about 25 by 30, so it shouldn't take more than twenty minutes, probably. You will, of course, be credited in my game. As for tilesets, I've been using a recolored combination of the church exterior and castle town exterior RTP tilesets.

Anyway, if anyone could give me a hand with this, it would be much appreciated! Let me know if you need any more specifics.

EDIT: I forget to mention, the party travels through a forest to get there, so around the manor should be a forest from which the party can approach.

EDIT 3: Removed edit 2.

Day 1

@Pyrrha: The shrill ring of the bell can be heard through the thick walls of the lecture hall. Over the shuffling of the massive class of students packing their desks into their bags, the professor can be heard shouting, "Don't forget you'll be quizzed on this material in Labs on Friday! Remember to review!" Before you even acknowledge the fact that you don't remember the room number for your next lecture, Saturnalus gives you a memo with the location, time and, though obviously not necessary, date of the class. Next to you, Ciera swings her backpack over her shoulder, careful not to snag her long, black hair beneath the strap. One of the few people you've met since the semester started about two weeks ago, you're mildly surprised she made it into such a prestigious college. Though not stupid by any means, she was perpetually late, foul-mouthed, and had school-work down near "solve world hunger" on her priorities list.
It's about noon; your next class doesn't start for a couple hours, though it's on the other side of campus and you have no method of transportation save walking. Your stomach rumbles slightly, reminding you that you haven't eaten lunch yet.

New Vocabulary in this post: Desks - an integral part of most schools' learning curriculum, desks are flat panels about 15 inches diagonally. Able to be collapsed to fit into a bag or purse, each desk is tied to its user, allowing them to view assignments, take notes, and view class materials for their various courses. Professors are able to update data regarding their class on their own desk, after which the updated data is sent to all students participating in that class upon their next sign-in. Due to the use of solar cells and having rather slow processors, desks never have to be plugged in or charged. Hacking the desk firmware is against the rules, but that doesn't mean it's never been done.

Now that I have a bit more free time on my hands, I've decided to start an RP. I encourage everyone to participate not only to increase activity on CP, but to make the game more enjoyable, as well.

Story: ShowHide

The year is 2058. Technology has advanced by quite a bit, there are few wars, and science is advancing is massive strides; the future looks bright. However, unknown to the general populace of Earth, about three months ago, the government received a message in what was thought to be an unusual code. The strangest thing? It appeared to have originated from the far reaches of space. Two weeks later, military radar detected a large cloaked object in orbit around the Earth. Though they have frantically been working to decipher the message or make contact with the strange object, all attempts have been futile. The government is unsure as to how to act. Does this strange object actually contain alien life, and, more importantly, are they dangerous? Classified debates rage, and tempers are running high. Despite this, people's lives continue the same as always... for now....

Sign-up Instructions:
Your character may be any one of five races. Each has their own talents and abilities, so choose wisely, as this will have a very large effect on game-play. In addition to the information on the sign-up sheet, please include your starting location in your sign-up post.

Human: ShowHide
For the most part, humans are as we know them today. English has become the universal language; all others are considered "dead" languages. Genetic advances have allowed for unusual eye and hair colors. The main change, however, is that all humans are connected to their own personal AI program, implanted in them via a computer chip placed into their brains immediately after birth. Because of its link to synthetic material, these programs have their own distinct personalities, and are unique to each person. Humans are able to converse with them most commonly through a wrist-mounted computer, though cell-phone like devices along with a few other more usual methods have been seen. This integration with machinery makes humans able to more conveniently go about daily tasks; the computer acts as their personal assistant, normally doing mundane tasks such as checking email, managing scheduling, and the like. In a combat situation, however, a person's AI is able to quicken his reactions because of their interface directly into their body, as well as alert them to enemy actions and locations. In your character's back story, be sure to include information about where they are from. Note that the moon has been colonized fairly recently, and you are welcome to be from there, though at the moment it is populated almost entirely by the very wealthy, as living in a moon colony is very pricey.

Android/New Android/Cyborg: ShowHide
Advancements in AI technology haven't only been used for the creation of personal AIs. Androids - robots built to look and act like humans - and Cyborgs - humans who have had parts of them replaced by mechanical components either through personal choice or because of an injury - have become fairly commonplace. Early androids were little more than AIs given their own mechanical bodies rather than being linked to a human. However, recent advances have allowed for the creation of a new type of android; through bio-organic computing, they are able to think and learn like humans. This does have some draw-backs. Androids of this type are only able to be pre-programmed with a minimal amount of basic knowledge regarding their functions. All additional knowledge must be gained the old fashioned way - reading and learning. In addition, there have been questions as to the rights of these androids. Previously, computers were built only as assistants to man-kind. Should these new types be on an equal footing? This is a topic of hot debate. You may choose to play as an old-style android (preprogrammed with knowledge of the task or tasks for which they were created, whether it be combat, etc. In addition, they have minimal emotions, though some have been programmed to experience them, with varying amounts of success. This may be helpful, or it may be a hindrance, depending on how you'd like to play,) a New Android (quite similar to a human, but made of manufactured parts and silicon chips,) or a cyborg (a human with robotic parts permanently part of his or her body.) On the note of Cyborgs, note that some, like humans, have their own AI's, though it is common for cyborgs to distance themselves from their AIs or even have them completely removed as they come to rely more on their mechanical parts.

Year of Manufacturing:
Model Number: (New Android model numbers are similar to original android model numbers, with the exception that there is usually a capital N following the hyphen. Example: ALI-N1785a.)
Physical Description: (Typically, New Androids look much more similar to humans than original model androids. Thus, artificial hair, eyes, skins, etc. serving aesthetic purposes are more common.)

Alien: ShowHide
Contact me if you'd like to play as a member of the alien race and I will arrange something for you. In order to maintain the mystery for players of other races, I will not list their description or abilities here.

Additional Information: ShowHide
In order to start with momentum, I will start the game as soon as a single person has signed up, and continue to add new players until sign-ups close (date to be determined.) Remember that the Earth is a massive place to explore; if you'd rather participate minimally or not at all in the main storyline, you're more than welcome to progress on your character's personal storyline. In order for the game to advance fluidly and without requiring irritating amounts of pre-coordinating actions with other players, cooperation is never going to be enforced. However, you will likely bump into other player's character from time to time, and you're more than welcome to work together if you both desire. In this situation, please be courteous to the other player, and don't take control of their character in your posts. Remember, the point of this RP is to have a good time, so have fun with it!

Too many choices?: ShowHide
Can't decide what to be? Here are a few suggestions:
  • Play as a member of the government, helping to coordinate running the country while attempting to make contact with the aliens. You could even be the President!
  • Play as someone hired by the government, helping to decode the message or establish contact.
  • Play as a grizzled war general trying to convince the government that the aliens are dangerous and should be taken down with a preemptive strike.
  • Play as a member of the space program; despite the tension, science is still advancing, and someone has to go where no one's gone before. (*Star Trek music here*)
  • Play as a terrorist, taking advantage of the panic to establish a New World Order.
  • Play as a New Android's rights advocate for a Phoenix Wright-style experience. (Okay, that might be a bit of a stretch, but it would probably still be a lot of fun.)

Contact me if you have any questions, suggestions, or would like to implement something in your character that I haven't mentioned (wanting to use Bio-Shock style Plasmids, for example, or wondering if a certain technology has been established by this point, such as teleportation. Incidentally, teleportation has not yet been discovered.)

Good luck and have fun!

DATABASE

Characters:

Pyrrha: ShowHide

First Name: Pyrrha
Last Name:Skithryx
Gender: Male
Age: 19
Eye Color: Blue
Hair Color: Dirty Blonde

Schooling / Training / Talents: Extremely good cook, educated in all sorts of cuisine. Has a precognitive ability that allows him to predict, with surprising accuracy, movements and thought pattern. Good climber and soft walker.

Personality / Other Description: Hailing from a middle-class earth family from Russia, Pyrrha is exceptionally boring sometimes, but charismatic and overbearingly nice at others. His family pampered him and he's well-educated for his age and love to explore knew things, so long as they aren't too creepy. Generally laid back, Pyrrha is quite a chill guy. His aloof demeanor disguises his almost annoyingly overanxious personality. He hates to be late and he hates to be talked to. His paranoia is well-disguised, but he won't be afraid to show it when something really scary happens or when confronted by a frightening atmosphere. He is currently studying in the United States.

AI Name: Saturnalus
AI Personality / Other Description: Saturnalus is as obnoxious as AIs come, making jokes at every possible moment and never bing serious. However, his personality comes mostly from his owner. At his "heart," Saturnalus is cruelly vindictive and is willing to chase down anything he thinks is necessary for his owner's preservation. Luckily, so far his owner looked after himself quite well.

Welcome! / Back.
October 26, 2010, 02:33:30 pm
I haven't been particularly active for the last week or so due to being extremely sick, but I'm starting to make a recovery and should be around more often. Just thought I'd let you know.

I'm trying to write this program for my computer science course, but for some reason it's not working at all as it should be. If anyone who is familiar with Java has a free minute, I would really appreciate it if you went over my code and helped me out. Yes, I'm aware it's very messy and probably not the best way to do things, but it should at least work. However, it doesn't, so obviously something is wrong. It's not a very complex program at all; just reading in text from a file and analyzing it, basically. Let me know if you'd like to help me out, and I'll send you a copy of my code and describe the assignment and requirements. Thanks a ton!

Academics / More Physics - A Vector Problem
September 23, 2010, 08:02:05 pm
So, I just finished my midterm for Physics, and I understood every problem except this one. The test is over, so I don't need the answer, really, but I would like to know what it should have been. Here's the question.

The movement of a particle in an xy plane is given by the equation:

r = (5(t^2)m/(s^2))i + (6m-(4(t^3))m/(s^3))j

a. Give the Y velocity at t=3.

b. Give the X acceleration at t=3.

c. Find the magnitude in the x-direction of the displacement vector of the particle between t=3 and t=6.

The whole question completely stumped me. Anyone know how to solve it?

Academics / [RESOLVED] A Few Physics Questions
September 02, 2010, 11:40:56 pm
If anyone's around who wants to help me with my Physics homework, here are the questions with which I need help. Note that this is due my midnight (my time, so about three hours for the time of me posting this,) so if it's after that, don't worry about it. If you don't have time to help, that's okay too.

How many kg of water are in 2.23 cubic inches (in3)?

1-5. Kim has a metal casting company which makes commemorative coins. She has 0.12 cubic
meters of silver which she needs to make into 1.03E5 coins of thickness 2 mm. If
she uses all of the silver, what is the diameter in centimeters of each coin?

1-6. A garden plot must have a central planting area of length 13 m and width 8 m. There is
to be a sidewalk around its edge of width w. If the total area, planting area plus sidewalk
area, is 170 m2, what is the sidewalk width w in meters?

These have me completely stumped, so any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

EDIT: I solved them all except the last one.

EDIT 2: Nevermind, solved that one too. Marking this as resolved.
