Have you what it takes to be a Gauge Wielder? Unless you so happen to be directly descended from the god of blades, the answer is no. But of course, you can help with realising this grand dream of mine.

Currently, I don't require any assistance, due to the game still being in its conceptual stage. However, I am perpetually on the lookout for voice actors, musicians, concept artists and 3d modellers.

If you're signing up for voice acting, I want to know how much time you can dedicate so I can decide how big a role to give you. The other three, I'd like to know how much time you can dedicate and a sample of your work, also any preferences as to what you'd like to work on.

Also, I'm looking for writers who would be interested in writing a questline for the game. For this, I'd like to know if you have any ideas about your quest line. If not, I'll give you a very basic suggestion and we'll discuss it from there until there's something you'd like to work on.

General Discussion / Thoughts on the Boss Battle

The boss battle is a staple of the rpg genre, and in fact, most action games. It's important because it's a break from regular combat and a challenge for the player, often a storyline event or just a chance for a cutscene too.

The boss fight is often highly pattern based. Personally, I find that this pattern approach is...lacking. It requires the player to think once, then exploit the pattern until the boss is dead. Usually, mind. The pattern can be good, sometimes, and this will be discussed later.

So I want to try and think about the ways we can approach the bossfight to make it more interesting.

Some ideas:

  • Varying the pattern.

  • A weak spot on the boss's body.

  • A constitutional weakness

  • Puzzle!

  • Environmental exploitation

  • Or, failing all that, your boss could just be a super tough enemy which the protagonist has to smack into submission.



Now, the specifics!



Variance

Variance is quite commonly used to make the bossfight more interesting. The most obvious example:

1. Run into the obvious little trap and shake in your boots as the boss descends.
2. Establish what the pattern is and exploit that until the boss's health reaches a certain level.
3. Oh woe! The pattern changes, making the boss a little bit harder to kill (or easier, if you can survive the new aggression)

As you can see, I'm not terribly fond of this. So, take your standard health based pattern. Now let's make it a little bit more interesting:

1. Run into the obvious little trap and shake in your boots as the boss descends.
2. Figure out the boss's pattern and exploit it.
3. Run out of mp. Cue a pattern change (which, if you're being nice, should make it a bit easier to take him without your skills)
4. Figure out the new pattern, exploit.
5. Now the boss runs out of mp! Time for another pattern change (this should make the boss stop using skills, or you could just render him useless until his mp recharges)
6. Figure out the new pattern, exploit.
7. Now when the boss's hp reaches a certain level, he goes RAAAH and tries to kill you in super-aggressive pattern. Hopefully you can survive ;)

Now, this still isn't terribly interesting, but you can see that there's a lot of things you can use to base your variance off. Suppose the boss runs out of mp before the player? You could have a different change in the pattern there and a whole other event. But why stick to mp? If the player switches weapon, uses a certain skill, if a certain amount of time passes, it's all cool. Try making a bossfight where the pattern changes on every hit and you'll begin to see the possibilities.




Bodily weakness!


In case of giant robot ninja attacking, climb onto its back, use a flathead 0536 screwdriver to open the panel and cut the blue wire, followed by the other blue one.

This is, honestly, not that interesting. It becomes more interesting when you add a pattern so that the weakness is only vulnerable at certain times. But still, been done before, many times, right? Now say you can only hit it with a certain weapon. But then you go stabstab and something changes and now you can only use another weapon! In this case, you must disguise the weapon's identity in a way that makes it challenging, but not impossible to figure out and you must also make sure that figuring it out is doable with a giant monkey trying to eat your brains.




Constitutional weakness


Early on in my game, Gauge Wielder, you come face to face with almost the most powerful enemy in the game, a drakon. Naturally, if you just run in there, you won't stand a chance. You'll be eated and munched on and if you're really unlucky, digestulated.

So, rather than rush in headlong, you go off and do your research. Turns out drakons are highly lactose intolerant. Who knew, eh? So you go through a massive series of quests to obtain some milk, then find a creative way to slip the drakon some of the stuff. If you're a real bastard, you can coat your weapons in the stuff for super drakon abuse. Do this and the drakon falls in a matter of seconds.

This takes advantage of both ways to play the the constitutional weakness card: passively and aggressively. Passively is something that takes effect before the battle (feeding the drakon his medicine) and aggressively is during (coating your weapons). Interestingly, with the passive card, your protagonist doesn't have to go into battle if you don't want them to. There's lots of creative opportunity here, so have some fun with it.



Puzzles!


Push buttons a, b and c in the correct sequence while boss is on spot x to cause pain in significant amounts.

This is a nice one because it's very rarely done. However, you have to come up with interesting puzzles otherwise it defeats the purpose of originality (otherwise known as copying less widespread ideas :P). I can't think of much more to say on thise one, but I'm sure there is.



Environmental exploitation


OMAIGAWD! HYDWA COMING TO KILL ME! *Leads hydra over the spikes of hydra killing*

And that is environmental exploitation in a nutshell. Find something in the environment which makes owie. Lead the boss onto owie-tile. Watch boss get owie (And try to not get one yourself) Again, more to say here, not sure what.



Smacking


Face it, you don't *have* to make your boss radically different from the grunts. It could just be bigger and tougher and rawrier. You could just resort to this for your small dungeon bosses if you're stuck for ideas.



Now, the thing you want to do here is to mix these concepts together to create some interesting bosses. Not just rely solidly on one. Or if you can think of any, coming up with more concepts is even better. So go forth and innovate!

I would like to point out that at this stage, this game is highly conceptual. I seriously haven't the time for the actual development of it yet, but I am quite determined to make it because it's so epic and such. Anyway, I'm throwing this out there to a) strengthen my commitment to it and b) try and plan it a bit more. I'd like your suggestions as well, in fact please do make suggestions, I really want to make this game...to quote the almighty Blizzard, beyond epic.

Anyway, to begin.


Gauge Wielder: The Forging




Story




Background: ShowHide

Following the Guardians Incident (Related to Absolute Power, a story I'm writing with PHM) a discovery was made. The potential annihilation which was prevented during the Incident could easily happen again. As such, Tiffany Mallia, sister of the Guardian of Fire and a demigod, born of the god of blades, was given responsibility for the Gauge, a machine which measures the energy levels which caused the Incident. Becoming Tiffany Gauge, otherwise known as the Gauge Wielder, Tiffany's job was to prevent anyone from gaining the vast amounts of power involved in the Incident. Several years later, Tiffany charged into another universe and was never seen again. Though some claimed she survived and is still alive, responsibility for the Gauge was passed on to her daughter, Konar Desri.

Plot: ShowHide

Centuries later, the Gauge has passed to Konar's elder son, Ephan. Our story begins with Ephan's death and the Gauge changing hands once more, becoming the responsibility of Echelon, Konar's younger son. The Forging tells the story of Echelon's training, mainly.

Age: 16
Species: Elf (Dark)

Enlashi is an orphan, adopted by Coritas Fusafi, the foremost assassin among the dark elves (and by extension the foremost assasin in the world) she has trained as an assassin under Coritas and has now moved to the Torian Academy to expand her education. She is Katraph's girlfriend and a sister to Edge.

Mechanics: ShowHide

Combat system

  • Deal with your enemies in the conventional manner, with your weapons, or in glorious style with your spells. Alternately, should you not wish to get your clothing dirty, allow them to wander over your traps or tame some creatures to do the deed for you.

  • Blow your enemies away with gloriously powerful Blood Moves when your health reaches maximum.

  • Watch out though, if your health starts to drop, you'll lose control of your pet(s), then your ability to set traps, and finally you won't be able to concentrate enough to cast spells.

  • Wield your weapons to devastating effect using their almighty unleash skills.

  • Or just let your pet do the unleashing and save yourself the effort!

  • Then again, why even bother with that? Your companions can do just as much and each has a unique ability to bring to the fray.

  • If you're feeling authoritative, give them some commands to change the flow of the battle.



The Menu

  • Based on Fable III's sanctuary, the menu will be a breakaway from traditional menus.

  • More coming soon...ish.



The World

  • Big ass open world with shitloads of sidequests and places to explore.

Bored of the ground? Well, no one's saying you have to stay there. Except maybe the roof. Either way, being partially divine, partially trans-dimensional police force means Edge is more than capable of taking to the skies. Or seas, for that matter.
  • Being a Gauge Wielder ain't all about beating the crap out of a power crazed demon. A crafting system will allow you to make yourself weapons, armour and items and trading and such will be very much within your grasp.

Ok, not the best way to return xD Still, I'm running out of ideas, and I also need to get the situation straight in my head.

A total of...seven of you know about my relationship. I'm going out with a girl who's two years younger than me and this fact is one of the roots of my problem. She has a lot of problems in her life, not least of which being that her parents are...controlling.

Again, some of you may know that my parents are divorced. As background to this, my mother discovered my father's other relationship six months into being pregnant with me. It has just occurred to me that I may have every reason to be against abortion but that's irrelevant. The point is, my mother's approach towards parenting is based off two things (This is speculation). A) She's incredibly socially conscious, and socially awkward too. Therefore I'm probably not the best son she could have xD. B) She is determined that I'm not going to be like my father. In that, she's succeeded. The idea of cheating is abhorrent to me. However she isn't aware of this.

Now, the last root of the problem. I go to a seven day boarding school and my girlfriend lives miles away from me.  As such, we're quite lucky to get a few hours together in two weeks. You may have gathered that I am devoted to her and as such, loneliness is making school even more of a hell for me than normal.

So then, the problem itself: I'm going mad with loneliness. My mother refuses to let me leave boarding school. Least, not this year, but I'm still trying to work out how I'll manage getting through this year. Then because of the age thing, and I suspect, my mother's paranoia about me turning out like my father, I rarely get to see my girlfriend and my mother tries to make sure that parents are always in attendance. Obviously, this inhibits things on a physical level, but more importantly, without our time alone, we find it quite difficult to grow closer.

I'm not sure what my question is. This situation confuses me more than I thought possible. I can't think of any solution at all, it's driving me insane.

It's been three weeks and there's seven pages of unread topics and I'm not going to bother with any of them. Anything super pressing? Also, it's fair to say I really amn't reliable enough to work on ARC, so I'm going to step down as graphics-person and deny you guys the chance to slap me in the face with it. I'll contribute a sprite or two though.

Ok, so. There are a lot of ways to do recolours. But since you're learning pixelling, do it manually. I'll do another lesson on techniques for doing these things quicker later on.

So. We are going to take this:


And make him blonde. Yeah, I'm starting easy.

So. First off, download the image and open it in GIMP/Photoshop/Whatever you have. I'm using gimp, so sorry if my language is alien to you, I'll try and speak basically.

Now then, choose a colour for your darkest shade. Mine is HTML a19300. Select all pixels with the same colour as the darkest colour in the hair and fill your whole selection with your colour. Mine came out like so:

Now repeat the process, making your way up the colour scale.

Assignment: Taking the same sprite, change the colour of the jumper. Post your end result and all the colours you used. Make the jumper whatever colour you want.

I am a genius.

Allow me to present an amazingly sexy battle system idea:

The specifics:
Face and minimap are self explanatory, I hope.
The red bar is hp.
When the hp gets into the cyan area, your limit starts charging, which fills the cyan bar. You can only use your limit when it's charged.
If the hp falls below the edge of the purple bar, you lose control of your pet. The purple bar represents its health.
When hp falls below the edge of the yellow bar, you can no longer use items, though health potions are still usable. Using items charges the yellow bar, which increases the effectiveness of your item.
When hp falls below the edge of the green bar, you can no longer use skills. Holding down the skill button charges the green bar. Using a skill when the green bar is fully charged uses the skill's more powerful version.
Attacking with your weapon charges the navy bar. Attacking when the navy bar is full uses your weapon's skill.

Now think of the combos I can make with this.

Instructions

Basically, you press escape and you are teleported to a room. This is your main menu. By entering one of the various rooms, you can access all the menu's features.

Author's Notes

This isn't compatible with BlizzABS yet, but I will release a version soon. I can do the AI set up and I think, the hotkeys, however, I still need to figure out how to do the AI triggers, but I'm working on it. Also, please note that if you want to use this menu, IT IS A DESIGN DECISION THAT SHOULD BE MADE BEFORE STARTING THE GAME! I cannot stress the amount of configuration required. In the demo, there are thirty one switches and at least four variables (I made others but didn't use them). Finally, if anyone has any ideas on how to cut down on the amount of configuration, or would like me to add features to this, please ask.

Edit: Just thought I'd say, this isn't the best I could do. But I promised Stripe103 I could do it without any custom graphics.

  • I want a script call to write a save file to whichever file I choose.

  • I want a script call to force the use of an item.

  • I want a script call to set a variable to the number of a certain item that there is in the inventory



That's all for now, but I will definitely need more.

Ok guys, I may have just solved human nature. Scary, right?


Ok, so imagine a bar chart. With three bars on it. On the left, we have bar C, the smallest bar. To the right of that, is bar B, the middling bar. Further right is bar A, the highest bar. There is also bar D, not shown on the graph.

Now, bar A targets bar B because bar B is jealous of bar A's exceptional qualities. If bar B is successful, bar A will stop regarding these qualities as benefits and think of them as flaws.
Bar B, however, knows the truth and remains insecure. And so, bar B finds bar C, the bar in a worse position than it. Bar B targets bar C, based on C's shortcomings, raising bar B's self esteem, value, whatever.

This establishes a norm, ensuring that the leader, bar D, may rest on its laurels, safe in the belief that the self preserving status quo will help it retain its authority.

Now, a breakdown. Bar A - C = the followers. Not individual followers, mind you. Each one represents an aspect of every single person not in position D. This is why people are such pricks to each other.

So, bar D maintains the preservatory status quo by keeping the pack in the safe zone, not too happy, not too unhappy. The only way to avoid this is to control without relying on the above mechanic, but how can that be done?

I'm posting this in intelligent debate because it's not a finished theory. Eventually I'm hoping to get a good character development tutorial out of it as well, but before I do that, I'm planning to make a whole series of these articles. I beseech you to bombard me with your own theories and feel free to add in suggestions for articles, because I'm basing this on four years of developing among very insecure teenage boys. And looking at them with an ever-changing perspective.

Ok, so I's planning to make a fable style skill system. I.E. You charge up a skill and then either cast it on a target or an area. What I need is a script call that checks if the player is aiming a skill or not so I can check for them pressing the area button. However, I'd prefer that the system itself isn't scripted so that anyone can make event systems for custom aiming. An addon might be necessary for the script call, I'm not sure. I think it might be possible using a checker for if the skill button is pressed, in which case I'll need a script call checking what skill is equipped. If any of the above are in the manual, I'm sorry, I don't have a copy of the manual within reach at the moment. Or xp for that matter, I'm requesting this so I can make it when I eventually get some life back into my laptop.

Now, I've been trying to draw it front view. However, I've been having obscene amounts of difficulty. So, what I'd like is for someone to put the image into a 3d file and upload the front view so I have something to reference. I don't want the full thing, just the head, that's what's giving me the trouble. I'd do this myself, but my laptop is dead and I'm using a school computer, so I can't download any 3d program. You don't have to do textures or anything too complicated, I just want the head.

EDIT: Ok, I changed the image so it's centred on the head. For those who want to see the entire figure, it's in my express your creativity thread, though I removed the unnecessary white space and put it into landscape.

Regardless, I shall post updates on my progress and any sample programs I make. Because I feel like it.

Chapter one: It taught me how to install and launch the program. Like I needed to know that, but hey,the book is apparently for nine year olds.

Introduction

A while ago, Fjurio made a character fusion system. Last night I finally made it Blizzabs compatible.


Features


  • Fuse two or more actors to make one awesome actor. Maybe multiple awesome actors if you feel like it.

  • Mounts system: Ride a mount ( :naughty: )  until either you die or you get off.
  • Battle based fusions: Fusions only last as long as there's enemies remaining on the map.

Author's Notes

Can't think of any, except that everything's in the common events tab.
Wait, just one thing: To test the enemy count-based fusion, talk to the character on the right, then use the skill. The other character is there to show off something I did with the mount system. To see it, make sure your other characters don't get killed.
Also, have fun.



Current bugs
You may have noticed that this version is only 0.9. That's because there is a bug with the system that I'm working on fixing. It's been noted in the common events in the demo.
