Title: [RESOLVED] Advanced battle animations
Post by: Cid on June 12, 2008, 05:41:59 am
Bonjour, folks. After a couple of months out I've just got back into the swing of game making again, and I thought I'd post this little idea I've had for a while now to see if anything could be done to make it a reality.

Basically, I'd like to liven my battles up a bit more. I'm already using Blizz's animated battlers script, which helps a lot, but if possible I'd like to take it a step further with the following:

Dying, reviving, and "dead" animations
I'm sure "dead" animations have been requested before. I hate the way your characters fade-out like monsters when they die. I'd like to insert my own animation of them lying on the ground or something.

Dying and reviving would be animations which, obviously, show the character dying or coming back to life. So if they ran out of HP, the "dying" animation woud play, showing them falling to the floor (which would flow into the "dead" animation of them lying on the ground), then once a life spell or item had been used, one would play showing them pulling themselves back up again.

Wincing animations
Plays when the damage display appears. Basically an animation of the character (or characters) actually taking the impact of an attack.

Example (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DU-t-2O-Mg). Watch Setzer on the first attack of this battle.

Critical/negative status animations
Pretty simple. When affected by something like poison, or low on HP, the character's sprite would be replaced with one showing them slighty slumped, looking a littler weary. For status effects you'd probably need to specify which ones it worked on, since positive status' obviously wouldn't use them.

Opening/victory animations
Victory animations are pretty self-explanitory. They play when the battle is over and the EXP is being awarded. Opening animations are of the characters preparing for battle. Maybe stretching, having a quick swing of their sword, etc.

Example (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_AfGhOCQllI&feature=related) of an opening animation. Squall swings his gunblade before resting in his standard battle stance.

I really hate requesting scripts, because I have no idea whether I'm asking too much or whether this is even possible. But still, if anyone's up for looking into some of these then it'd be much appreciated. I think the trickiest aspect is that, obviously, each character would need their own, separate animations, so this would need to function with multiple characters in mind (I have eight).

Oh, and it goes without saying, but I don't expect the animations themselves to be made for me. ;) In fact that's the reason why I'd really like some help with the scripting. I like making animations. :x

Have you tried Minkoff's animated battlers? They support many of the animations you need. I'm just not sure if it works with other CBSes than his Side View CBS.

Cheers. It does seem to have most of the stuff I'm after, and it arranges my battlers in an almost identical way to the script I've been using up until now, so that's alright.

The only problem I'm having is setting it all up. I can't work out where I need to store my animations, what sort of template I'm supposed to be using for them, or how to configure it all in the script.  :-\

edit: never mind. Slowly starting to get the hang of it. Cheers, Bliz.
