I hope it's okay to ask here, but how do i go about recording footage of a game for youtube?
Depends on the game you want to shoot :D
But for most games i'd recommend Hypercam2, since it works well for me.
There are also some free programs out there
But since this isnt the right place for this question I'd say :
Google is your best friend
just search on screen capturing program or something
Try CamtasiaStudio or FRAPS.

Well you cant record rmxp with fraps I think so Hypercam2 or Camtasiastudio would be suited.
Do not listen to element. You're not serious at all about presenting your game if you use Hypercam.
Use either of these:

Uhm, yes it can record RMXP games. I do believe it has a desktop recorder to capture the game in its window. Hell, even though I have not tried, I do believe it can still capture the footage how it's meant to from RMXP games. Though, correct me if I am wrong.
Now, as for what I think should be used:
Bandicam. Hands down. It's a much better, and more featured alternative to FRAPS(which I tjink is awful to begin with). So yeah, if you can pirate buy Bandicam, you will not regret it at all.

Ah ofcourse! Fraps can record rmxp, I've used it before for that, thanks for remembering me.
And even though I know hypercam isnt the best screen recording program, I recommended it becouse its the only one I've used for these kind of things. For games though I always try to use fraps since it gives me hell of a good quality.
The only thing I tried to do was give Mike the fastest answer I could give :)

I actually need to find a better way to record game stuff. I use FRAPs but every minute is like 3 gigabytes of footage. The quality is damn amazing too but jeebus.

I personally like Camtasia Studio the best. It seems to have the most amount of features to it, and is pretty easy to use.
I got Camtasia, but the formats are bad, i start to try and play what i recorded in any player, and there is always something wrong, missing frames, or some won't play any video footage, just the sound.
Both Camtasia and Fraps are giving me this problem, nothing i record comes out right... like the footage is in a bad format that can't be read worth a damn... i blame Windows 7...
/me is running Windows 7
All recording programs work great, and I can play the videos they produce just fine.
/me is 100% positive it's a problem produced by you rather than Windows 7 its self
Maybe update the appropriate drivers?

If you're running into issues with the recordings not capturing sound, you are missing audio drivers then. Or you have not enabled sound to be recorded. The only recording program I've ever had issues with was Hypercam and eventually I got that to work too. If you alter the settings some I'm sure you'll get it to work.
The sound is fine, i said it was visuals, god.. and there is like.. no way to even show what the hell it's doing.
And i have the latest drives for my video card, i have checked over and over again.
It's making no damn sense to me at all... and on top of that the entire situation is pissing me the hell off and aggravating me to an extreme, especially when people are like "it works fine for me", what i need is someone to go "oh i had that problem, you gotta do this".
I just wanna slam my head into a wall, it's nothing i'm doing, i have tried replaying the files in every like.. media player i got, and it always screws up in some form or another, either it freezes on the first frame and does not play the video, and all i get IS sound, or it will play but flash green over and over, and stutter.

Well.. can't seem to record anything in fullscreen, and for me, for some reason, that's the only time RMXP runs smooth, it's choppy as hell when ran in windowed.
And i can get files to play in Quicktime pretty well now.
Which one of those recording softwares will let RMXP run in full screen and actually record in full screen?
Or will any of them?
I dunno, but I can understand why that causes bugs trying to record RMXP in fullscreen. Changing the resolution of your computer while a program is recording areas based off a resolution is sure to be troublesome.
There is no reason I can see why RMXP would run smooth on fullscreen and not when windowed. You seem to have all kind of strange things going on. I don't know what you mean by "And i can get files to play in Quicktime pretty well now". They don't play at all?
Anything i record in fraps or even Camtasia, only seems to want to even half way work in the quicktime player and nothing else, it's the oddest thing.
And yes, for some reason if it's windowed, RMXP games do all kinds of ripping and stuttering, but in full screen works smoothly.
I've been using Xsplit to livestream, but it is a great program to use once you get the hang of it....

I got camtasia to working, i am recording my game in full screen as it runs the smoothest that way, and it works pretty well.
I want to show some things i got so far in my game, but i worry about the kinda feedback i might get, i can be pretty touchy and sensitive and emotional.
For some reason i can't record RMXP with Fraps. No matter how much i try the program won't recognise the RMXP Game Window.
So you're saying there's a way to record RMXP with Fraps... how exactly? You might be able to help me too ^^
No, not with fraps, with Camtasia, Fraps does not seem to want to work right for me no matter what i do.
