Anyone tried RPG Maker VX here?

I gave the demo a shot and I gata say the graphics and themes are nicer, the editor has more features and I like new interface. I liked the new icons, and the dungeon generator was really neat. I liked the ship options and my favorite feature would be auto events where you can quickly set up doors or inns without copying all your event code from other events. I also liked the faces better then the ones you can get for XP. They are all facing right and they look great when used with text. It makes talking characters more lifelike.
Saying that, I was disappointed in a few small problems making it unplayable to me. For one they took out the battlers and battlebacks. The game just shows text as your character in battle and a warped version of the game map behind the monsters. It felt very empty and plain to me, I prefer the XP battle system much better.
The map editor was simpler but because of that, very limited. The game seems to create more square like maps then of XP making cave creating and landscaping very unrealistic, like back in the gameboy pokemon days <_< I greatly prefer XP's mapper over VX.

Another thing was full screen mode, its not true full screen but only covers about 80% of the screen with massive black borders around it.
The problem is I do like VX better, its smoother and feels better then XP but those few small problems is what keeps me away from it. I think its better to just stick with RPG Maker XP and you can probably download scripts to get all those new VX features in XP.
I give it my lowest score ever, 3 thumbs up...
I gata say, with all the ps2 rpg makers, when the heck do we get a 3d one for the pc... I could so get into that, I been getting into basic 3d modeling over the last year.
If you are an avid enthusiast of RPG Maker 2000 and 2003 and hate the transition from that to XP, then VX is the maker because what VX does is ramp up all the features from those two primitive engines. It's more close to 2000 because of the battle system however. Making the comparison of VX to XP is really hard since XP can easily win in technical powers, but VX is a nice home-like smooth engine...Enterbrain should have advertised it better and made sure that XP and VX are two completely different engines...
EDIT: By the way, I'm sure we can intelligently debate on this and this can be a legitimate debate but would it be more appropriate to land this thread within General RPG Maker Discussion as it relates to RPG Maker? This is something that's on the fence with both sections and I'm sure this thread would be equally fit with both, but I'm unsure at the same time. Maybe it's the late night.
I personally like RPG Maker XP a lot more, mainly because the mapping doesn't feel so... awkward like it does in VX. That and... well... Blizzard doesn't make scripts for VX yet, does he? xD There's some project ideas that I could make that would work a lot better in VX, but for the stuff I usually do, I stick with XP.
Unless I plan on making lots of events, in which case, 2K3 is my preferred RPG Maker. No event lag ever!

I wish that feature was retained for RPG Maker XP and VX. You can make some interesting homemade items if only the events won't lag. But then there's ABSEAL and other events that'll help benefit for the cause. :)
ok my take for VX it that it is a nice system and people are making good scripts for it now (not a whole lot)
i love the graphics in it like the charcters..but you can convert them over to Xp as well which i have done :)
i dont mind the battle system in it i actually kinda like say if you wanted to make a old school very early SNES or even NES style rpg then VX would be right for the job(which i do have a project planned to be made with VX) i would use VX for a current project but the mapping limitation keeps me from it.
and my take on XP is that i really like it does have features that are missing which VX had that would be nice to have like Mightylink said...i do like most of the scripts out for XP now..(mainly all of Blizzards work)
and the mapping in XP is so much better by far compared to VX.and XP and more people that work with it rather than VX so you can get help in alot of places.
so all in all i would stick with XP myself too since the fact everything out for it now is perfect for my main project(some of you may know it :) ) but VX does have some good points about it as well..
my scores from 1-10 for all the rpg makers:
RMXP: 8/10
RMVX: 5/10
RM2K3: 9/10 (i actually started Wanderer on this system and transferred it over to XP..it was working out nicely then i cam across the Blizz-ABS in it's early stages and fell in love with it and soon all the other Blizz scrpits)
RM2K: 7/10
I started my RPG making days with 2000, then tried 2003, got tired of the battle system, switched back to 2000, then I went over to XP. I TRIED VX recently but I liked XP alot more.
same with me, i tried VX when i heard about rpg maker, but found that the all round support was lacking, and from what ive seen so far most of the changes to VX can be scripted into XP.
XP just has alot more support and better scripts for it, thats why im using it.
VX is in the stage XP was 2-3 years ago, give it time and more ppl will start switching imo.
XP is just too beautiful...period.
Ok, so both engines can sustain high quality images and all-round graphics, but XPs entire engine is conformed for the higher level of graphics...with larger charas and battlers, and bigger whole sets for the mapping...
Being a Spriter, you can tell that graphics are a MAJOR part of my decision when considering any real dissension in topics, and when it comes right down to it. I simply enjoy playing with the larger charas and the higher level of detail...If it is more aesthetically pleasing to the eye, then the game itself will be more enjoyable to play. It will hold your attention longer if what your eyes see interest you. That is science my friend...
If your reason for using RMVX is because either a world map is directly included in the RTP, or because you like the default features of the game more...Then shame on you seriously...
It just doesn't dawn on me why anyone would substitute great graphics for the lower quality brethren when the fact of the matter is...There is a "SCRIPT EDITOR" in RMXP just as RMVX which means...
Are you ready for this?? As stated everywhere else, Lol...
- You can DO ANYTHING in RMXP that RMVX has!! You just have to be willing to put in the effort.
Besides...there are world map scripts out there that blow away the RMVX default map by a long shot. You just have to be intuitive and creative to use them...
RMXP has a beautiful design and I'll never switch unless they release a Maker with higher base graphics...
I agree. in my opinion, VX is more geared towards beginners and is easier to use at a basic level. XP on the other hand, may be harder to start out with, but it offers much more once you master it.
And I thought there was a bug that makes RM 2k3 Unusable as said from the official site. And I had to admit RMXP was hard to start on and VX offers "basicness" a lot than XP, winkio and the others on side of XP I had to agree with you but I'll try VX a bit.
I tired VX and I didn't like it. Yes, it has quite some basic things, but it lacks some advanced features I'm used to from XP (like the tilesets). This limitation made me go back to XP.
I hope RPG Maker XP is teh best forever! well at least the developers just upgraded RMXP to a newer and sorta of improved version of XP.
:)
If only the tileset system can be managed a bit better, which it can using the time and devotion, I'm sure you can create a great game on that. Users of RPG Maker 2000 and 2003 would actually be more used to VX than XP, if they weren't using any of them originally of course...But XP regardless knocks the socks out of VX...
Only thing I like is the smooth look...but it's just like Vista. In fact...you can use the same analogy for Windows XP and Vista with RPG Maker XP and RPG Maker VX! :V: (No kiddin', Sherlock)
Why the :V smiley? You're perfectly right as I see things. xD
