That's probably what you mean by "they saved the world once" I bet. :P

true. Well, anyone here actually enjoy reading shakespeare's plays?
Title: Re: BOOKS
Post by: winkio on December 09, 2008, 12:10:26 am
some of them.  I like Hamlet (tragedy) as well as most of his comedies.

BTW if you like reading plays especially Shakespeare, you MUST read "Waiting For Godot"

I want to shake a spear! :V: Cue in the lamest wordplay ever. :3

Shakespeare is a great author, but I never really bothered to read any of his works. But then again, I never bother to read anyone's works. :V:

Books are great. So great, they make me irate...

Oh wait, that doesn't sound right.

You can't be reading Old English if you're reading Shakespeare xD nice try though

It's Elizabethan English FTW

And they make you read books in school to teahc you how to read. Most people suck incredibly large dong-dong at reading correctly. Also, reading is extremely serious. It should be taken as such and respected. :p

Holy crap ._. I don't really care much for what kind of english it is >.> As long as I can't read it, it's of no use to me D: And like I said, I'd rather enjoy reading than answering in my free time ._.

I thought you were better than that. Afternoons right after school is where I go braindead, so I pretty much can't think of anything. That's what makes rambling so remarkable. :)

You people and your silly opinions. Neither can be better than the other or at least in the degree that things are normally compared. It would be silly to compare a picture and a piece of paper or a brush. Why compare the medium to the thing the medium creates?
Title: Re: BOOKS
Post by: Vell on December 09, 2008, 07:12:35 pm
well. a picture is more epic than paper or a brush because a picture can come about without the need of paper or a brush, just as books are more epic than Elly's english because books can be written without it.

see? :P

Winter's Heart.
Title: Re: BOOKS
Post by: Diokatsu on December 09, 2008, 07:22:58 pm
I understand your point Ulta it just isn't plausible. The picture is CREATED with the paper and brush or with another medium. You HAVE TO use a medium regardless of what you create. Otherwise you just have an idea. The expression doesn't surpass the medium because the expression is thusly limited BY the medium. The understanding of the medium is only limited by our talents and in itself has no known limits outside of what is implausible.
Title: Re: BOOKS
Post by: Fallen Angel X on December 09, 2008, 07:24:58 pm
So... is it a good book so far Ulta?
Title: Re: BOOKS
Post by: Vell on December 09, 2008, 07:27:47 pm
it is. but you fail to see it Dio.

a picture is more epic because aPaper and Brush aren't the ONLY Mediums that can be used. because theres more ways for a picture to exist than a paper and brush, if paper and brushes vanished, pictures would live on and continue to be made. just like now that elly's english is dead we still have new books.
Title: Re: BOOKS
Post by: Diokatsu on December 09, 2008, 07:29:30 pm
The arguement has evolved Ulta. Language is the greater medium. Just because you can write a book in Arabic or English doesn't make that book GREATER than the medium used. It just makes that book take advantage of a different medium.
Title: Re: BOOKS
Post by: Fallen Angel X on December 09, 2008, 07:59:59 pm
Well, now you're saying that language is a medium and that Elizibethian is more of a subdivision of that medium which completely changes the arguement ._. Which of course I don't even know what stating what I just said hopes to accomplish b/c it doesn't really do anything. Why are we debating again? All I said was books were more epic than the epic Elizibethian English...
Title: Re: BOOKS
Post by: Diokatsu on December 09, 2008, 08:05:25 pm
Language is the TRUE medium of books. You were saying that books ar emore epic than Elizabethan English because they didn't HAVE to be written in it. This makes very little sense to me as the language a bookk can be written in is not lesser than any book. If the author chooses to use a different language than fine, but it doesn't mean that language was inferior but that the author hadn't skill in the other language.
Title: Re: BOOKS
Post by: Vell on December 09, 2008, 08:24:37 pm
whatever. im not talking about individual books, im talking about books in GENERAL. books in general are superior any one single thing, because they can be written without them. if one overall does not have need of a single thing, then the overall is superior to the single, even if without the overall that single thign is associated with is necessary.

I think we're arguing seperate debates here.
Title: Re: BOOKS
Post by: Diokatsu on December 09, 2008, 08:28:01 pm
I'm arguing that books have a dependance on languages to be expressed. The books that you mean I take it. So write a book without an words and we'll see how far you go. A book that you read on a daily basis that is. Picture books are of another quality altogether
Title: Re: BOOKS
Post by: Vell on December 09, 2008, 08:31:33 pm
again i do believe we are arguing seperate debates.
Title: Re: BOOKS
Post by: Fallen Angel X on December 09, 2008, 08:36:52 pm
The arguement stemmed from a certain someone saying books are more epic than Elizibethian English. Which of course Dio took it a step further and assumed the comparison is between language in general and books in general. In this kind of arguement, there is no winner. Merely because there is no simple, one is better than the other answer. Sadly enough, I understand both of the viewpoints. And yes, in a sense you both are arguing different debates. How? Ulta is comparing Books in general to Elizibethian while Dio is arguing books in general with language in general.
Title: Re: BOOKS
Post by: Vell on December 09, 2008, 08:40:58 pm
yes. so, before things get out of hand, I suggest ending the debate.

I can get a bit... Heated... in debates. especially if i didn't come prepared for one. I tend to get annoyed when the other can't understand - or refuses to understand - my point. and then i get angry. and then I start Capsing. and then the other does. and then...
Title: Re: BOOKS

Title: Re: BOOKS
Post by: Vell on December 09, 2008, 09:10:49 pm
books aren't supposed to fit your mood; they are supposed to fit your interests.

they aren't a movie or a good song. ir even manga or comic books. literary, NOVEL-level, books are stuff that are supposed to make YOU feel.

Title: Re: BOOKS
Post by: Diokatsu on December 09, 2008, 10:03:48 pm
Sadly, most men and women feel that books lose their luster after long periods of time. It's more than neccessary to FORCE youself to read a GOOD book. No matter who you are you have a preference. My favorite book at the current moment happens to be Catch-22. It's prolly the funniest book I've ever read and prolly the one I've understood least. Books aren't going to always be what you want, but I gurrentee that you'll never regret reading book if you truly love them. Books aren't bad in any sense of the word in my opinion, just some seem less than appropriate to be called book. Nevertheless, it is someones work and therefore precious.

Title: Re: BOOKS
Post by: Fallen Angel X on December 09, 2008, 10:10:58 pm
I don't have anything against the author or their work ._. And indeed I do respect books. I just can't see myself reading a book anymore. If I can't force myself to do the mandatory things in life, I can't force myself to do something that's extra..
Title: Re: BOOKS
Post by: Diokatsu on December 10, 2008, 05:41:11 pm
Books are only extra if you make them that. You can make books an important part of your life as well, for that matter.
Title: Re: BOOKS
Post by: Fallen Angel X on December 10, 2008, 05:49:59 pm
I find books extra just b/c it's not a necessity. You dont need to read books to live. They're more of a hobby or something to pass time with. I mean, I understand they're important to pass knowledge from 1 generation to the other but there's always other ways to pass information around. I mean, I'll read a book if they forced me at school but not during my spare time.
Title: Re: BOOKS

Title: Re: BOOKS
Post by: Fallen Angel X on December 10, 2008, 09:51:45 pm
I dont mind hard thinking but rather I just can't sit still and read a book anymore. I used to read books a lot but I stopped. If I think about it, I actually fluctuate from wanting to read books to not wanting to read books. I dont know how long it takes me to switch but I'm definetly not in a mood to read with all that twilight bonanza going on.

I think the last book I read was the first maximum ride book. I couldn't find the others.

Books stirred up my imagination which I don't if it's a good thing or a bad thing since I'm a little screwy in the head O.o My period of reading books was like grade 8 and ended at the end of grade 8. After that I started reading again late grade 9 and stopped when I stopped going to the library >.<

I had a friend who took reading to an extreme... He read the school library dry D: He even read the bible in 2 days :^_^': He kinda stopped reading books when he entered high school though :???:
Title: Re: BOOKS
Post by: Diokatsu on December 11, 2008, 07:55:20 pm
The Bible is an easy read :/

Books are at their base a form of spreading information and at the same time a form of entertainment. No chool book is completely bland and no fiction book has no moral. This is true of all books xD even if you can't find the information or entertainment. Books aren't a competition also. We must respect all those who read books :3
Title: Re: BOOKS
Post by: Vell on December 11, 2008, 08:25:50 pm
Bible = boring.

Some manga is mentually stimulating. in a sense. but books are always better. its especially fun when you guess what something is, but not what the point of it is. those are always fun to try to puzzle out. how can they use that one point?
Title: Re: BOOKS
Post by: Fallen Angel X on December 11, 2008, 08:31:32 pm
I agree. I attempted to read the dictionary ._. It was a terribly boring experience which I don't ever plan to attempt again. I don't think I got past A. Manga? I don't really read manga, surprisingly. I also like reading books and figuring out what's going on next but now I just realized, I hit a new fatigue level when I look at a book D: I guess I really can't read books for entertainment anymore :'(
Title: Re: BOOKS
Post by: Diokatsu on December 11, 2008, 08:36:06 pm
You never read the Bible...

Anyways, many well written books are in themselves a puzzle in a different sense than I think you mean Ulta. The enire book is strange and abstract and you know something is amiss, not in the way the plot progresses but the way the narrator tells it.
Title: Re: BOOKS
Post by: Fallen Angel X on December 11, 2008, 08:48:14 pm
So, you enjoy reading books to see how other people write and express their thoughts and views into a written form? I enjoyed reading books to get a feel of the characters in the book if it's a story. If it's a book that covers a concept and a concept alone, I read it b/c I'm curious about the concept.

And why don't we read the bible..? :???:
Title: Re: BOOKS

Title: Re: BOOKS

Perhaps but we can never truly know unless you know Ulta IRL. I find some stories in the bible interesting and others simply stupid. No offense. I can't read a book until twilight settles down. :'( I just hate reading when other people are raving about a mediocre book out there :(

You're right, I'll make the necessary operations right away.

While things like articles, magazines, and unfortunately yes, instruction manuals don't count as books, they do contain some interesting information. Well, instruction manuals can count as books in some aspect because they are long as a usual picture book. Magazines can also be one, but they're more of an evolved newsletter/newspaper which isn't a book. Articles aren't definitely books...

Fantasy + Romance = Fail. its just a poorly disguised way to say 'This guy is supposed to be the black guy in a twenty years ago world, and this is supposed to be the white girl in a twenty years ago world, but Fantasy is the only way for me to do this scenario in a modern day world without getting screaming picketfencers outside my door and a shotgun in my belly'

that's an interesting and very cynical way to think about it.  However, it's not really the same.  I don't feel like explaining why, because it will get nobody anywhere.  The books aren't half bad, but they're not the end-all-be-all of romantic novels that the fans will have you believe either.

I mean I don't hate vampires or romances or fantasies but to be honest, from the spoilers I've been told it seems really stupid. No offense to the fans. It just doesn't work with me when the supernatural characters are dumbed down versions of the originals. Dracula would own Edward any day. And the werewolves aren't even werewolves, they're shapeshifters >.> That alone is enough for me to not want to read it. That and I don't want to be associated with those crazed twilight fans. To be honest, they're stepping on my last nerve and I'll massacre the next group of girls exclaiming "OMG Edward Cullen!!" Damn obsessed fans -.-"

I'm bi ;)

the characters are well developed, the plot isn't riddled with holes, and it's pretty well written, so I like it.  That and I'm a sucker for <3

The fact that the Were/Vamp fighting was extremely one sided (werewolves loathed vampires but vampires couldn't care less) was refreshing, and I actually liked the slight change in mythology.  It fit the story rather well.

interesting. but fantasy romance isnt my cup of tea. romance is fine, but unless you handle it well, unless you handle ANY fantasy well, it is a lot of boringness.

Well I don't quite agree with you namkcor but there's no point debating over it seeing as to how it's opinions rather than facts and I'd rather not O.o Well, either way, I don't intend on reading the books since they're not quite my thing.

So anyone read "The Outsiders"? I had to read it for gr. 7 and quite a few people said it was good. I thought it was an interesting read too. :haha:

Funny, but I always pictured vampires as the ones who couldn't care less and that the fight was quite one-sided. It's more in line with the vampiric attitude of giving a hit, which I find annoying and quite stupid.

in a lot of movies you see nowadays, it's a constant open war, with both sides despising the existence of the other.

that is, actually, a good point, Nam. and one I have to agree with.

Not that I watch many movies, but I was rather judging on character. It would make sense for the vampires to be laid back in my opinion. It's a point but possibly one heard of before. i doubt Twilight was so unique that, since Bram Stoker made his own vampire novel, there had been no other instances in that mannerism. It's nice to see some variance to be sure, but I haven't been exposed to modern films of those so I don't have a background to compare them to.

I actually read the first one just to see what all the hullabaloo was about
(is it really that bad? no way it can't be that good..)

after finishing the series, I think people should learn to be quiet.  It's not that bad, and it's not fucking platinum quality either.  The whole controversy is idiotic.  I think most of the people that hate it expected it to be the standard vampires that we've seen in Blade and Underworld and etc... for the past few years, and the people that worship Meyer are lovesick emo children who can only find true love in a book.  Then there's people like me, who are few and far between, lol.

Well, I don't disagree with you there Namk. I don't HATE the books but rather more that I hate the obsessed fans. But this topic is about books and not about the people who read em, right? Personally, I find that I can't make a judgement call on books and say they're terrible. There are exceptions when a book is simply so poorly written and written on such a terrible subject that it scars your mind for life. Of course, I've yet to come across a book like that but I digress.

Twilight isn't a book I would read, as I said before. This is true still, regardless of how many of my friends are hounding me down to read it. I don't hate reading about romances and I love reading fantasy books but certain aspects of twilight prevent me from wanting to read this supposedly godly book or quite possibly book fashioned from the hands of evil itself, depending on whom you talk to. Of course since I have yet to actually read the books, I can't write a proper review on it or form a strong opinion but what I can do, is work with what spoilers I've been told. In this case, it helps knowing 5 twilight fans who scream out random bits of information about the book 24/7 :P

So, anyways, from what I've heard, these vampires aren't your traditional vampires. Forget the burn to death if you head into the sun, the sharp two fang-like teeth, and if I recall, the life-threatening fear of garlic, vampires. That last one I can't remember if it's true or not ._. Personally, I love the old traditional vampires, the ones like Dracula :P So when they make this many changes to a vampire, I can't help but be upset. Now these vampires only sparkle or something of that sort when they're in the sun >.>

The werewolves, from what I heard(Yet again) are not werewolves but rather shapeshifters. So now, I'm left wondering, "Isn't the hatred between werewolves and vampires not shapeshifters and vampires?" Of course, as more spoilers were told to me, I found out that these shifters use a universal form, the wolf. I'm not quite sure about the mythology behind this but apparently they decided that they would all transform into wolves. And at some point they lost the ability to turn into anything else except from wolf and human form or something like that. Fine, get points for... Originality? Not quite sure but I heard of a similar concept from somewhere before. But anyways, why would it bother me? Simple. WTF!? They're god damn shapeshifters, when did they come into the mix!?

Well, that's just my opinion. I don't really care what you guys have to say but I'm sticking with avoiding reading the books :P

actually. thewhole burn in the sn thing never really happened before Transylvanian vamps came around; Dracula, and th elike. before that there was relatively few weaknesses in Vampire lore. lobbing of the head of the vampire, and burning at the stake, i believe, were some of the more popular, though maybe just the lob of the head one. and another with somethin to do with like, holy water.

and yeah, that thing where they can transform whenever is quite not uncommon. i believe it falls under the general lycanthrope thingy.

Yeah, I knew I heard of that concept before. I don't quite understand what Lycans have against vamps or vice versa but still, I'd rather not read twilight regardless since they changed my perfect little vampires into... well let's not say anymore :P
Title: Re: BOOKS

Werewolves, by definition, transform only at night. other forms of lycanthropes transform when they want - either by way of magic, or, in some places, by way of a tool, like a belt, that channels magic from somewhere else.

If you have Hircine's Ring you can transform anytime :3

Yes I get what a lycanthrope is. I just remembered where I heard that concept! It was from Harry Potter O.o But anyways, this is straying off-topic from a books discussion to a supernatural discussion. So anyways, what was everyone's opinions on Harry Potter? I only read a couple of em but I didn't like it.

lol I remember those glasses. Nah I got em cuz my sister was into the series. To be quite frank, I wasn't. I only read the first two books and a bit of the fourth O.o The only reason I read the first two is b/c one of my elementary teachers read it to the class :^_^':
