This thread will most likely be a continuous thing. Whenever I have questions about what kind of enemies would be found where, I will post the location, and if anyone has any suggestions, throw 'em out there for me. =D
We'll start simple. What kind of enemies would be found in a forest??
**Please try to avoid the obvious: Bees, Ants, Spiders, etc...
In a forest...Why, you'd obviously find Smokey the Bear. :3 I mean, only you can prevent forest fires! His resistance is Fire since he is such a high advocate of prevention of Forest Fires.
Many Earth-like monsters would probably be in a forest. Water-y, flora-related beasts/creatures are the usual quo. Rabid venus flytraps, strange giant plants, even locus eaters (Wait, locus eaters?), great stuff...

Normal Forest: Huge versions of all insects. Like a huge butterfly. D: I would use :V:, but it would actually be scary.
Dark/Haunted Forest: Wolves and mutant wolves. Womping trees. :xD:
Jungle: The gross plants Kirby suggested. :D Huge mosquitoes and king kongs.
Enchanted Forest with A Waterfall: Nymphs and fairies and tree spirits.
Other locations:
Volcano: Nobody. They all got cooked. D: Probably burning birds or dragons - things which live and breathe fire.
Sea: Mutant fish (e.g. those freaky ones with lamps), gory sharks and wrinkly merpeople.

The really interesting things happen when you go slightly off the default. i.e. dragons in a tower, demons in a spaceship, dry-plant monsters in a desert, etc. Players are like "OMG, WHAT ENEMIES WILL I MEET THERE?!" when you don't follow the standard too well. xD
You know...I actually see where your coming from.
What game was it?? FFX maybe. Had mushrooms on rocky roads, and bombs on airships and stuff, so yeah. I hear you. Just kinda alter some stats, maybe give 'em some special resistance, and make it seem like they belong there when they don't.

You know what would be awesome - if you invented your own set of mythical creatures. Forget demons and chimeras and sagahins. Although that's easier said then done... :o

Lets see have you tried Thieves bandits green type monsters
Forest
Wing beasts (Bird, Owl, Sometimes eagle), land beasts (Wolf, Bear, Tigers, Moles), insect (Mosquito, Wasp, Spiders, Flies?), sometimes certain non-living lifeforms like Slime and Ghost/nocturne/spirit and possibly Mushrooms and certain other plant like species. Sometimes in rare cases, a living tree. And if someone really hates you, then Orcs and goblins should be in it as well. Bandits, are also common sometimes in a dreary woods.
EDIT: Lizard can be found in Forest as well.
If there's a presence of water in the area, certain kind of Turtles and Ducks should be thrown in if possible.
In rare cases, dragon-like creature are there.
If there's a presence of ruins, Golems, non living (skeletal), insects and material based like Rocks or possibly Sand worms. Goblins/Orcs should be presented there too.
If swamp, then should be poisonous creatures, spirits and possible swamp monsters? Possibly certain kind of beast, and nocturne creatures. There's some goblin/Orcs there, as well as some dragon-like creature.

You need recurring clown-like creatures who hide as others, and have some awesome stuff that will make people have fun when they see them.
i.e.
"Oh, ANOTHER troll. Better bust out my hammer and Paladin magic again."
*troll takes off mask and is really a three-headed clown that throws bombs that debuff you and has shuriken*
"...****."

Might I recommend poking around Keith Thompson's page? He is an amazing artist AND has some pretty bizarre ideas (ie a walking fish that looks for battlefields where it eats dead soldiers until it is full, then runs home and cooks itself!)
