Title: NAM's VX Challenge
Post by: tSwitch on March 03, 2009, 10:22:41 pm
NAM's VX Challenge

Alright Kiddos, this is a very simple challenge, obviously to be done with RMVX.

Rules

Judging

Simple enough right?  15 days, RTP only.  No gathering special resources or anything, just trying to make a killer game with what you have available right from the get-go.  With the exception of a custom title screen, should you choose to use one.
It can be any sort of game, as long as no scripting goes into it other than the default scripts.

STOP ASKING IF I WILL BEND THE RTP-ONLY RULE, I WILL NOT, THIS IS AN RTP ONLY CHALLENGE, BENDING THAT RULE DEFEATS THE PURPOSE.

Signups ARE CLOSED, NO EXCEPTIONS

Contestants

Judges

Prizes

For Dropping out, you get this consolation prize!

Sounds like a good challenge! :P I love competitions with a lot of restrictions - it really brings out creativity in some people. <3

...I'd be much more interested if it wasn't VX though... ;__;

I made it VX because not many people know it really well yet, that and there's less out there, so there's less temptation to break the rules.

I'M IN!

Just a quick question though.  Can we use the special resources included with XP?
Title: Re: NAM's VX Challenge
Post by: Blizzard on March 04, 2009, 03:01:37 pm
You mean the XP RTP in a VX game?
Title: Re: NAM's VX Challenge
Post by: GAX on March 04, 2009, 05:00:23 pm
naw, I mean RMVX came with extra pictures and such (suitable for character dialogue) and other resources that aren't installed, I usually drag-drop them into the RTP
Title: Re: NAM's VX Challenge
Post by: Chaze007 on March 04, 2009, 07:26:16 pm
what about custom pictures? for cut scenes.
Title: Re: NAM's VX Challenge
Post by: tSwitch on March 04, 2009, 07:44:39 pm
You can use what came installed with the RTP
the only custom resource you can use is the Title.

Is there no Minimum Time Limit on this? Just wondering because someone could just make a 5 minute game and submit it, which of course would probably score really low, unless it's really epic...

The judges have a very simple job
they don't have to judge art, or music, or scripting use.  Just how fun the game is and how well the RTP was used.  Custom event systems are a plus.

No prize? D:

I can't really offer a prize, then try to win it myself.

Also: updated the rules to clarify a few things and add one single script exception.  Namely, the one that fixes the Game_Interpreter so that variables work properly.  This was a fault on enterbrain's part, and contestants shouldn't have to suffer for it.

I agree. You should allow those kind of scripts.

yep, that one patch for Game_Interpreter is fine.
enhancing default scripts is -not- fine, but I've looked over this one and it addresses terrible flaws in the Interpreter, so it's good.

I am still confused as to my question.

I'm asking because included in the "Extras" folder included with RMVX are not only the larger face sets, but also more paralax backgrounds, down sprites, and other stuff that can help with the quality.

That...and I am kinda liking this cave paralax ^_^

the answer is no.
They aren't installed with the RTP by default, therefore no.

keywords, 'not in the RTP'
this, being an RTP ONLY challenge, means RTP ONLY.

self explanitory.

also yours is due the 21st.

Fuck man, this is a tough and fairly strict contest.  I'd do a remake of an FF game, but that just feels stupid (especially since I've been working on IV).

I'm trying to think of something good, but eventing in RMVX without scripts can be a pain in the ass...

Well, I hope I have a game ready.

it wont be to tough but lame that we cant even do enterbrain's graphics.

if you don't like it, then drop out.
read the nice red line on the first post for more info.

Well, this is rather unfortunate.
I just got slammed with nice paper to write for english class, and won't be able to work on my game :/

I will step out of the competition and revise my role.

Instead of being a contestant, I will offer a prize.  You have the choice between either a simple script for XP or VX (complexity of the script subject to my interpretation and analysis), or one free art commission.

's a bummer, but school comes first :/

and like putting battlers in the pictures folder?

If there is anyone who does not understand if X falls under the definition of RTP-only:

RTP-Only Challenge: ShowHide
Quote from: NAMKCOR on March 03, 2009, 10:22:41 pmSTOP ASKING IF I WILL BEND THE RTP-ONLY RULE, I WILL NOT, THIS IS AN RTP ONLY CHALLENGE, BENDING THAT RULE DEFEATS THE PURPOSE.

RTP, Run-Time Package, refers to the package you receive with RPG Maker VX. You have it, or else RPG Maker VX would not start. An RTP-only game means that you ONLY use the things found in the RTP. No custom sprites and no custom scripts. THAT MEANS:

  • No Custom Animations

  • No Custom Battlers

  • No Custom Characters

  • No Custom Faces

  • No Custom Parallaxes

  • No Custom Pictures

  • No Custom System Graphics (NAMK does, however, allow a custom Title)

  • No Custom BGMs

  • No Custom BGS's

  • No Custom SE

  • No Custom ME

  • No Custom Scripts

It means you have to make your game using only mapping and eventing.

Moo's game has been submitted, and the PM is being sent

For future reference, do NOT post links to your game in public until the judging is complete.

as to why, I would rather the games not be released until their judging is complete, so taht the community doesn't pressure teh judges by posting about the games.  I hope you understand.

All other contestants please abide by this rule.  Posting about your game is fine, but do not post links in public just yet.

Ah crap...I sent it to you anyways.  Sorry, I was really busy on the due date (I thought I had til the 20th also), and was pretty wiped when I got home (was at my gf's all day after I got out of classes).

Nightmare of Obsidian
Style:  Mission-based RPG, Conditional Endings, (Visual-novel hybridization will be added in final version).
Playtime:  Demo:  approx <10, Final:  Few hours for all endings
Story peak:  17 years ago, Prince Orion was kidnapped from the castle, the blame was placed on Knight Lord Roark for the lax guard, leading him to be discharged.  Now assassins conspire to kill the royal family, with the new Knight Lord, Obsidian, at the center of the plot.  Guide Roark and his comrades through the castle to save the royal family, defeat Obsidian, and uncover the dark secrets of his nefarious plot.

(I'm so gonna make a full version of this, just for the fuck of it!)

What about GAX? You can check if he really didn't work on it after the deadline by checking the file modification dates.

if you write an essay, finish it before it's due, but don't hand it in, you don't get a grade.
Sorry, but I'm being strict with deadlines.  If I let GAX's game through, next thing you know I'll get asked for extensions, or everyone will hand their games in late.

ANOTHER GAME?! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

How are you satisfied about the number of people (and ratio of contestants) that actually submitted their games? Have many have you expected? I'm just wondering.

Sorry about the delay.  My computer's boot record got demolished when I went to install Vista on the free partition and it took us all day to figure out how to fix it, but now I'm dual booting fine, so I'll pm links for kingmunkey's game right now.

I expected about 6 finished entries.
Two of the people I was certain would finish didn't :/

Don't worry, it's just Game_Girl's ADD kicking in. It does that every once in a while, but with a good kick to the butt you can get her to do what she's supposed to.
