Title: Chrome OS
Post by: winkio on July 28, 2009, 12:50:01 pm
Google is making an OS.

Interesting to say the least.  It seems like it's starting out as lightweight, simple, and free, to go on netbooks.  But it could eventually go mainstream.

Stealth says "The world is crying". :/ I don't know what to expect from this. I didn't like Google Chrome because it was supposed to be simplistic, yet they used a completely different design than Windows default and yet again on the other side it was missing vital features that usually make surfing easier and more pleasant. :/ "Poor" would be a good adjective instead of simplistic or lightweight.
Now saying that they are making a "lightweight" OS sounds to me like Vista without almost absolutely anything but looks.

But I might be wrong.

I'm not really passing any judgement until I see it, but it could turn out very well, imo.

QuoteWe hear a lot from our users and their message is clear -- computers need to get better. People want to get to their email instantly, without wasting time waiting for their computers to boot and browsers to start up. They want their computers to always run as fast as when they first bought them. They want their data to be accessible to them wherever they are and not have to worry about losing their computer or forgetting to back up files. Even more importantly, they don't want to spend hours configuring their computers to work with every new piece of hardware, or have to worry about constant software updates. And any time our users have a better computing experience, Google benefits as well by having happier users who are more likely to spend time on the Internet.

This seems interesting as well.  It's like out-appling apple, and THEN making it free.

It looks promising. But as I said, I'm rather skeptic. :/

Personally, I don't think I'd use it, even if it does turn out really well.  I dislike apple for many reasons, which I won't go into and start a flame war, but one is that many of these 'improvements' come at the cost of reduced features and reduced control over your computer.  I can't stand reduced functionally.

remember that this is aimed at net books. a category of laptops designed fo one purpose, accessing the internet. they don't have the power to do much else ans the OSes that ARE built for netbooks are fairly bad this could be great for that purpose.

EDIT: also take a look at this http://evoluzination.blogspot.com/2009/07/holy-grail-of-net-os.html (http://evoluzination.blogspot.com/2009/07/holy-grail-of-net-os.html) if what they say is true then google is making this not to compete as an OS but to gain control of users web experience (a very apple approach) and gather data on web use and make better web products (they are already revolutionary in the field I can only hope they don't grow as powerful as this has the potential to make them. else, well, things will change and I'm not sure it it will be for the better. monopoly is NEVER a good thing especially in the web industry.

It's basically the same thing as that Linux distro w/ Fx ASUS is shipping on mobos nowadays. Nothing special other than the logo =/

Also, I'd be very interested to know the specific ways in which I'm unable to control my MacBook as opposed to your XP/Vista. =/
