Title: RMXP Pool Beta-The Easy Way to Find RMXP Resources
Post by: Nerd101 on October 17, 2009, 05:11:09 am
For the past 3-4 weeks, I have been working on a software utility for RPG Maker XP called RMXP Pool. Basically, it's like Scrive (Scrive is a program which lists loads of scripts and their download links), but you can also search through a library of other resources such as battlers, characters and background music; as well as scripts. RMXP Pool also allows you to download resources for RMXP directly through the program itself, without opening a browser window. You can view a few screenies here: www.rmxpool.webs.com/screenshots.htm Currently there are 2 downloads available:
1.) A tech-demo which basically shows you how the program works (www.rmxpool.webs.com/downloads.htm)
2.) A BETA of version 0.1 in which you can download from a library of 15 scripts. (as it is a BETA, member login is required) (www.rmxpool.webs.com/downloads.htm)

The library is made of resources that people have chosen to submit resources they have made to RMXP Pool. As I want to really expand this library, I would love for anyone to submit resources they have made to me, or give me feedback on the program or suggest ways I could really build up this library

Can you explain more detailed what exactly the application is for? If it's meant to check resources used in a project, there is a script (http://forum.chaos-project.com/index.php?topic=113.0) for that already.

Blizzard, i think what he has done is, hes made a program that gives you resources rather than having to browse things for hours looking for something you need

dunno though, just my input :???:

That's why I'm asking. I'm kind of confused what exactly the app is for.

Okay, I apologise for not explaining myself well enough. This is a program that I am currently developing that is like Scrive, but will allow people to find all sorts of resources, not just scripts. The demo shown is only a demonstration of how the program would work with someone's script or resource. Basically, to ease the workload on myself; I am going to branch into collecting resources into each area slowly over time. I am going to begin with scripts. Basically, this topic is to show people what I am developing, and to (generally) ask for scripters to submit their scripts to be integrated in the program's library. Basically it's a program that (when complete) will allow the user to browse through and download a huge variety of resources without having to spend hours looking for scripts and other resources on various sites. Right now, I am looking for scripters to send me their scripts (see the first post on how to do this) so I can integrate them into the first proper release of RMXP Pool.

Lol, I was just about to bring Scrive into the conversation ...

@Blizz:
If you aren't familiar with scrive, here is a link.
I always thought to myself after viewing scrive for the first time, that an application equivalent to it would be perfect for Chaos Project due to the sheer number of useful scripts we have here, but I never brought it up, because I wouldn't have known how to discuss the topic without it being considered as kind of copying scrive.

This seems like a nice, interesting thing. So, if i´m right, what this does (when finished) allows you to download scripts, and other resources from a library, hosted by Nerd101. Could you, maybe, instead of saving the downloaded scripts, audio, and graphics in my documents in separate folders in the RMXP Pools root directory?
I´ll check this topic regularly to see the updates you make, etc. And, if needed, i have loads of resources (but most of them aren´t mine, and those that are mine, are just couple of character sets made with photoshop from templates). I also have some scripts from which none are mine, but i could try to track the authors and ask them if it,s okay for me to submit them to RMXP Pool.

Can I ask why you are adding scripts to this application??
That is what scrive is for ...

Ah, I see. That's definitely an interesting concept. It would probably make it easier to keep up with script updates, etc.
As for resources, I think users should be able to add URLs via the application which can access the resource collections then. It's just a suggestion that might make things easier, though.

Calintz: I am adding scripts to this application becuase, at the end of the day; scripts are another type of RMXP resource. The idea of RMXP Pool is to find any type of RMXP resource and download it for you.

Blizzard: This is a neat idea. At the moment, I don't know how to do this directly through the program (as you need to have a developer account on my website to submit resources), but I could have a page with an Internet Explorer ActiveX control that will link directly to the submission form (and ask you to login of course!)

Blizzard: I have taken upon your suggestion and have integrated a submission form into RMXP Pool iteself. You won't be able to see this now, but it will be in the next release (I still need more scripts...) You can view this here: http://rmxpool.webs.com/blizzardsscreen.JPG

I still need more scripts to be submitted to me before I can create a release that is worthwhile. I'm hoping to get to 15 scripts before my first release. Once I have done that, I shall then allow people to begin submitting BGMs

Well... Now that you have a submission form, I can submit my scripts. I have over 20 of them here.

BTW, I also suggest separate script and demo downloads. Some of the scripts I posted aren't just a script so usually people have to download the zip package or the demo. Your app should require that at least one link (demo or script).

Besides the submission form that is going to be in the new version, there has always been a submission form online. Go to www.rmxpool.webs.com and click on 'Submit Your Resources' for more info.

Alright, I'll remember to put my up scripts there during the next few days.

Okay, thanks Blizzard. Because you have over 20+ scripts, I have now created 2 submission forms. One is for single resources, and the other is for the quick submission of multiple resources (for those who have lots of resources!) To do this go to www.rmxpool.webs.com, click on 'Developer Area' and create an account (this is also used as an RMXP Pool forum account.) Once, you have access to the Developer Area, click "Submission form for multiple resources".
PS: Sorry about the tech-demo being down, I now have a much better way to host resources online.

As soon as I recieve and integrate your scripts, I will then work on polishing up the current version in preperation for a first release (as 20+ scripts will be more than enough to start RMXP Pool off)

That sounds great. I should be able to find some time today to finally submit my scripts.

EDIT: Ok, there you go. Filling out the submission form is a bit bothersome. It would be simpler if people would be able to login rather than having to enter the e-mail and forum username each time.
Also, I might have accidentally submitted a script twice. My internet connection broke at that moment so I had to submit a script again.

Thanks Blizzard. I have received all of your scripts and have integrated about half of them into the program. There is now a BETA version of v0.1 available from the developer area which contains 15 scripts available for download, the new interface and a BETA version of RMXP Pool Updater. I sent an email blast to all my members which will give you more info on this. The finished version of v0.1 will have all your scripts in it and any other scripts sent to me between now and then.

EDIT: Oh, and of course bug fixes, if you find any bugs, please post a topic in the technical support forum

Wait, you have to add each new resource into the program? Why don't you use an online database to which you connect to obtain newly submitted resources? That way you wouldn't have to release a new version each time somebody submits a new resource.

I do have to add every resource into the program. This would be a cool idea, but it would be a pain for me at the moment as the only way I can see myself doing this is by using MySQL; which I find very confusing and difficult. If I was to do this, I would at least want to get some initial releases done first, because I would have to rebuild the entire program to do this. If you know any way that I could do this without SQL, I'd love to hear it.

It can be done with just using some sort of index in files, but MySQL is much more convenient. The earlier to decide to switch, the easier it will be (imagine 1000 resources that need to be added to the MySQL database in a few months).

If you decide using files, you can simply use 1 file per submission. You just need to find a way to separate the entries of the different values (author name, resource name, forum link, etc) with a specific character in the file since \n is being used as normal. I used \t (tab character) to separate values in RMX-OS server-client messages so it could work out here as well. Before the actual saving of a submission you could simply replace all tab characters in the submitted text with normal spaces and that way you could use the tab character as separator without fearing that it will mess up anything.

Example: Blizzard\tBlizz-ABS\thttp://LINK_HERE\t

As filenames you can just use numbers. Of course this isn't as convenient or efficient as using an actual database.
If you decide on using MySQL, I can give you a hand. Which programming language did you make this application in?

RMXP Pool was not made in a programming language at all. It was made with a 'drag and drop' editor and programming program called Multimedia Fusion 2 - Developer (www.clickteam.com). To be honest, I could spend millions of hours learning a programming language, but this program provides me with all the functionality I need (there are currently loads of commercial games and apps created with it).

Thanks for the offer of help with MySQL. Besides creating the database, there is also the problem of actually accessing it via the program; as the downloadable SQL object is rather complicated and it also shows a firewall dialog whenever someone attempts to connect to an SQL database. By the way Blizzard, all of your scripts have now been integrated. To take a look at this, install the BETA of v0.1 (if you have not already) and launch the RMXP Pool Updater shortcut from your desktop. It will download an update patch which will install of your scripts into the database. You may wish to check over them and see if there is anything you want changed, in terms of descriptions, etc (I know that I forgot to change the description when I made the .exe for Stormtronics CMS; so it has the description from Blizz-ABS. This WILL be fixed in the final version).

I can now compress each resource .exe into a .CCN file which can be displayed through an .exe. .ccn s are extrememly small (the minimum size being 4kbs) so this will make this size of RMXP Pool much, much smaller :)
