Title: Chaos Project - Mapping Contest!
Post by: Landith on January 30, 2010, 01:37:30 pm

February Mapping Contest
So far Chaos Project has had many contests, but no Mapping Contests, and I decided it was time for one!
February 1-15

Rules:

Rounds:
There will be 2 rounds. -.-'

Prizes:

Judges:
There will be 3 Judges, but for the first round no one will judge. There will be a poll for the first round.

Contestants:
To be a contestant you will have to pass the preliminary round. There will be 15 contestants who make it, so I encourage everyone to participate (:
If you want to participate just PM on here, and when the preliminary round starts I'll put you on the currently participating list and put the criteria for the map you need to make.

Currently Participating:

I feel this'll probably come down to Rose, Blizz, Nam, and myself...alright, I'm in.

@GAX
Last I checked, I can map pretty well too, although to be frank, not on all tilesets.
However, I don't feel like putting in so much effort, I've got my game to map, Ruby to learn and helping two other projects.
Landith, if it's possible I can judge. Tell me if I need to give you a resume or something.
Title: Re: Chaos Project - Mapping Contest!
Post by: Landith on January 30, 2010, 02:02:29 pm
@GAX: Ok your in.
@Lore: o_O No resume lol you can judge. But the thing is you won't judge until the Final Round, that way people won't think it's favor-ism throughout the contest or what not.
Title: Re: Chaos Project - Mapping Contest!
Post by: Lore on January 30, 2010, 02:07:32 pm
Hm, I don't like that to be honest. That means any random person with little mapping experience can judge the most important round. I recommend you make sure the judges can map decently themselves so they know what they're doing and what they need to look for in a map.

Just an idea.

Post by: Landith on January 30, 2010, 02:11:02 pm
Ok true. I didn't of that tbh... A little tired and all.
Go ahead and PM me a few of your maps and I'll make sure you know what to judge. I'll also send you one of mine and I want you to judge it by a certain criteria so I know what your doing.
Title: Re: Chaos Project - Mapping Contest!

Maps will have to come a bit later, but I'll PM you something for now.

Pffft... Lore, you just don't want me to be a judge.

I'm not a mapper, but I'm still an artist.
[Mapping is DEFINITELY an art]

I'm gonna be judging all map entries as if I were critiquing pieces of art.

Well, Mapping is my favorite aspect of RMXP and I really enjoy doing it, so I want the contest to be fair for the final round D:
But you have a point...and I guess you can judge because you're Aqua >:

I personally know Aqua can judge/critique good so that's why she can be a judge. Even though her mapping skills aren't as good. :P

Can I compete in this? How do I enter? What kind of map are we going to make for the preliminary map? And if we're only submitting a screenshot, why do the maps need to be linked?
Title: Re: Chaos Project - Mapping Contest!

I think i'll participate in this.
Dunno if I can map good but here's a chance to see xD

Yes. You just entered but you will need to qualify to advance. You will find out the 1st of February. They don't need to be linked, I said Inside/Outside meaning Inside or Outside.

Oh, lol. I totally misread the sentence in the first post (I hate when I do that). Well, can't wait till February to see what I'll be mapping. Have you decided how long each round will last (how long we get to make our map?)
Title: Re: Chaos Project - Mapping Contest!
Post by: Landith on January 30, 2010, 03:12:12 pm
Yeah you will have 2 days before the next deadline,(giving everyone a chance to vote) which is 5 days to map it and turn it in and 1 week between each deadline. This contest will end up lasting all February which is why it's called February Mapping Contest (:

Ok you guys are in.
Even after the preliminary round starts people can still sign up, but they will only have until February 6th to turn anything in.
After that no one else can join and people will get cut (if we even reach 15 people :/)

Any word on the 3rd judge? Only one day left.
Title: Re: Chaos Project - Mapping Contest!
Post by: Landith on January 31, 2010, 05:13:57 pm
Well it depends if when Blizz gets on if he wants to be a Judge/Competitor/1st place Price.
If not a Judge then I will be the 3rd Judge.
I'm not worried about the Judge just the amount of competitors is kinda... shocking to say the least. I thought more people would want to join considering the amount of time they have.

Title: Re: Chaos Project - Mapping Contest!
Post by: Landith on February 01, 2010, 08:25:11 pm
Well looks like we didn't get as many people as I thought we would. So I guess we can just skip the Preliminary round and move onto Round 1 as everyone is qualified.

Type of Map: Desert - Outside
Remember it's a screenshot of in-game and not of the editor so there really is no point of making it bigger than 23x15.
Also RTP only as the rules state.

Any questions regarding about what you are and not allowed to do or about the criteria just post here.

All the contests are going to qualify for this round, if I counted right o.o Top 10 qualify, we have 8 people...
Title: Re: Chaos Project - Mapping Contest!
Post by: Landith on February 01, 2010, 08:32:19 pm
Oh wow I thought we had over 10 -.-'...
Hm... I wanted this to take longer than 2 weeks though.
Oh well, move onto round 2 then, Top 5 qualify to move on meaning 3 will get elimated.
Good luck.

No PM me your maps so I can post them all at once, that way we can do a poll on which one you like and you won't have to scroll through pages or posts looking for different people's maps. (:

If you think your not going to work on your maps after you think your finished, go ahead and send them in so you won't forget. If later you see an error or want to add stuff/re-do a section, you can send me another version of your map. The last map you send me will be the one people will vote on. Just clarifying that (:

So far I have Game_Guy's and Sourseb's map. Tomorrow is the deadline guys.

Are we allowed to use custom fogs, or does the RTP only rule apply to fogs as well?

Ok Sorry guys, I got home at like 1 a.m. last night and tried to post them. But for some reason Chaos-Project went down or my internet went down, one of the two cause it kept saying that the webpage was unavailable :/
Was way to tired to wait for it to come back up so now I posted it (:

Ok I have everyone's but two people and I hate to say this, but since it's the deadline, they have been eliminated from the competition. Slackers...
On to the competition!

Element Island:  Waaaay too empty.  I live very close to a desert area (honestly, about an hour from here and I'm in Death Valley).
G_G:  Not bad, but you've got 4 different wind directions via the swept sands.
Myself:  *Facepalm* I really should have spent more time on design...only one of two people to actually make an Oasis
LB:  Pretty crowded dude.
Sourseb:  Not bad, nice little oasis-like area
Valdred:  Dude, Palm Trees require water to live.  You have a sandstorm going on, which happens in very dry areas of the desert.
winkio:  Now that's a little more believable in terms of a desert, you've got a nice little mix in there and have followed some basic rules of nature.

Title: Re: Chaos Project - Mapping Contest!
Post by: Landith on February 06, 2010, 03:56:36 pm
Me and Game_Guy have already discussed this, and he said he would make a small sized community script. But the thing is... G_G used a non-rtp character sprite in his map... Meaning, he is dis-qualified. Sorry G_G, I didn't notice it before until Aqua pointed it out.

That sucks x.x Well at least he doesn't have to worry about winning his own prize, eh?

But I voted for him D:
Title: Re: Chaos Project - Mapping Contest!
Post by: winkio on February 06, 2010, 04:17:16 pm
My opinions on people's maps (don't take them too personally)

elementisland: While it may be believable in terms of a desert, it's not very interesting as a map in a game.  Add more visual cues.
gameguy: looks decent, but the shapes are slightly too blocky and the dark sand looks weird when it goes up and down ridges.
GAX: the heavy tint and clouds threw me off for some reason.  And I have no idea wtf is going on with the elemental and such.  The actual mapping part is still decent, though.
legacyblade: I can see the mountainous effect you were going for, but it looks a bit too jumbled.  Very good shapes though.
Sourseb: theres a few too many cutoff objects for my taste, but I like the tint and general layout a lot.
Valdred: very nice classic desert map.  I especially like the placement of the trees.  My favorite map this round :)
winkio: there's a lot of subtle and interesting stuff at the edges, but the middle is too boring.

Something I noticed:
Why is everyone using so much tint/fog?  Deserts are usually clear.

That is all.
Title: Re: Chaos Project - Mapping Contest!
Post by: Landith on February 06, 2010, 04:22:17 pm
You critiqued yourself? :P

@LB: Well since he is disqualified I'm going to change the poll settings to allow you to change your vote and remove him from the poll so you can vote for someone else.
Title: Re: Chaos Project - Mapping Contest!
Post by: GAX on February 06, 2010, 04:42:44 pm
I was trying to setup the tint to be more like a sunset.  The clouds are just really me looking to use a nice fog, I really should have dropped the fuckin' opacity though.

If I had a second chance to do this, it'd have come out much nicer.
Title: Re: Chaos Project - Mapping Contest!
Post by: Landith on February 07, 2010, 01:13:02 am
Well if you make it past this round then you will get to make another one (:
Which in reality, only 1 person gets voted off this time as only 7 submitted and 1 got disqualified.

Title: Re: Chaos Project - Mapping Contest!

Yes, give me time to wake up :P

Now for results before we start.
First - Sourseb (9 votes)
Second - Valdred (9 votes)
Third - GuardianAngelX72 (6 votes)
Fourth - legacyblade (6 votes)
Fifth - Winkio (6 votes)
These are everyone going on to the next round

Ok Round 2 is going to be 2 maps, an inside and outside map.
Criteria - Outside Castle/Inside Castle
Since these maps are normally bigger than others, it doesn't have to be a screenshot of it in game and can be in the editor, but it would probably be better looking if it was a screenshot because you can use more stuff like events/fog/tints/etc..

Good luck everyone.

Would we be allowed to take multiple in game screenshots and glue them together and submit that as our entry?
(So we can have larger maps and fogs/tints).

{Edit} :: Oh! and also, are we allowed to use animations (rtp of course).
Title: Re: Chaos Project - Mapping Contest!
Post by: Landith on February 09, 2010, 01:14:23 am
Yeah you can put in game screenshots together but I will warn you that if you mess up on it and the judges can tell you did then you will get counted off accordingly.

And yes, anything in the RTP can be used. Which means you can even combine RTP tilesets as long as they are RTP only. You however can not make recolors to RTP, or add anything to the RTP. Hue Changes in game of course don't count as recoloring the RTP.
Title: Re: Chaos Project - Mapping Contest!
Post by: This Side Backwards on February 09, 2010, 01:25:39 am
Combined RTP sets! I'm looking forwards to seeing some nice mixes then!
Title: Re: Chaos Project - Mapping Contest!
Post by: winkio on February 09, 2010, 01:34:18 am
Wait, that doesn't seem to make sense.  You can mess with the tilesets, but not with the other resources?  Shouldn't it just be no modifications at all?
Title: Re: Chaos Project - Mapping Contest!
Post by: legacyblade on February 09, 2010, 01:35:26 am
I agree. Allowing mixing and matching of tilesets kind of makes it more about who's better at editing tilesets than anything else. I think it should stay ONLY RTP. No modifications.
Title: Re: Chaos Project - Mapping Contest!
Post by: GAX on February 09, 2010, 01:37:35 am
also agreeing, limit this down to only the standard RTP tilesets...the furthest modification should be adding autotiles
Title: Re: Chaos Project - Mapping Contest!
Post by: Landith on February 09, 2010, 02:18:03 am
Hmm... Yeah I see where ya'll are going with this.
Didn't really think about that :P
Forget about what I said about mixing the Tilesets everyone (:

RTP only no modifications/adding/recoloring. Period.
Title: Re: Chaos Project - Mapping Contest!
Post by: GAX on February 10, 2010, 01:38:43 am
what about using autotiles?  I like to utilize the flowers and such to make my maps.
Title: Re: Chaos Project - Mapping Contest!
Post by: This Side Backwards on February 10, 2010, 01:45:26 am
The flowers autotile is already integrated into the outside castle tileset, so it won't matter anyways. (In this case).
Title: Re: Chaos Project - Mapping Contest!
Post by: Landith on February 10, 2010, 01:56:00 am
Yeah you can change out the autotiles as that has to do with the database. Just as long as it's not a custom resource.

I'm going to have to drop out. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I will be without computer acess starting later today. I was going to do the map tonight and in the morning.

That's fine LB. It was good to have you for the first round (:

Tomorrow is the deadline guys, so far I have Sourseb and Valdred's submission. You have until tomorrow night (:

OK here is the deal, GAX needs a time extension due to school otherwise he will have to drop out and you guys win by default which I don't see that funn at all.
The thing is about time extensions is I need your consent to do it so post here saying if you would like this or not. Of course you can edit your maps and add to them, etc... during this time.
Also if ya'll agree, LB can join back in the competition again so it will be 5 people. If he wants to that is.

Extend it!

Well that's the majority of everyone (3 out of 4 people) so the time is extended.
If Legacyblade would like to participate in this round he can. As he dropped out due to time restraint. It's up to him though.

New due date - This Friday (February 19)

is it then legal to post new entries if you already have sent one?

I can do that :D Granted I'll be out of town on friday and saturday with no computer, so I won't be able to participate in the voting, but I'll get in a map. MWAHAHAHHAHAHA. Computerz.

Post by: Landith on February 15, 2010, 06:05:29 am
Well as long as you get it in before then it's all good (:
As for the voting, it's the last round so judges are going to be the only ones who even see the maps until next Monday when the results will be posted.
So there won't really be any voting so you won't be missing anything.  :haha:

After midnight tonight I will send the maps that have been submitted and they will have until Monday to judge them. On Monday I will post up the results along with the final round maps.
So you have until midnight tonight to get your maps in.

Sorry I'm not going to have enough time to make the maps, I've been sick the past two weeks and had way too much work + exams.  Good luck other people ;)

Okay... So we have 2 submissions. *Whoo-hoo* :uhm:
So they win by default, etc...
I'll just send them to the judges to see who gets the first place price and who gets the second place prize...

If you were 'good' friends Aqua you would definitely know what the second place prize was.
I guess you will have to wait to see ;)

Basically...
What do you want?

If I can do it... then I'll do it.
If I can't do it... then you can choose something else.

And a big thanks to you!

Go ahead and post it for the community, there's no need for it to be an exclusive script.

One thing you might want to fix though is a tiny typo in the instructions (the script call example) for item (it says "tmis" or something like that) noticed it as I copy and pasted it. Otherwise, it works just fine!

Thanks also to Landith for this competish!

It was a request I hadn't had filled yet.

http://forum.chaos-project.com/index.php/topic,5568.0.html (http://forum.chaos-project.com/index.php/topic,5568.0.html)

I told G_G he could post it up to the community, I guess he didn't want to yet...

Oh, and could someone please close/lock that topic since the request has been filled?
Thanks.

Offtopic. I'll release when I'm good and ready. (Meaning when I finish at least one more request I took, meaning a month down the road.) :V

No hopefully I'll get something done tonight. I'm gonna try to spend the rest of the night scripting.

Enough offtopicness :O

I think it should be right enough to unsticky this and perhaps lock it up to prevent any further crises, that is, if anyone is actually thinking that such a competition is still running :V:

If anyone is interested in another mapping contest, then feel free to create a new thread!
