Title: Looking for Input
Post by: MeVII on March 21, 2010, 02:23:08 pm
Hey All!

Lookin for some input here.
Which is the best visual representation for the progression of numbers/levels 1 - 10?
These will be used for my skills/spells.
The examples are for my fire spells icon.
Tell me what one you like the best.
Or even make your own and show me.
Blank Template: ShowHide

Rules
1. I am only interested in pip sequence/placement. No other editing is necessary.
2. I prefer the pips to stay on the icons edges.
(Pip is located in the upper left of the blank template.)

Any input is welcome.
I am only looking for input on the pip placement sequence.

Also, in general, which looks better for the last one?

or

Horizontal: ShowHide

Making 10 versions of a spell is completely absurd. Nobody is going to use them all unless your game has 100 hours of gameplay and so much levels.

I'd say just recolor the background (blue into red or something) instead of adding a random block there, and make fewer skill levels.

If you really want my opinion on the pip placement, here it is:

I like Sase's placement too. Alittle more organized.

FFII didn't have 100 hours of gameplay, yet they had 8 levels of spells (or was it 10 after all?) and a shitload of number of spells. Your comment is void and offtopic.

I like the pip layout, though.

I quite like C, it follows a trail and I think its easier to read the number :)

Why don't you just place a number on one of the corners?

Hey Griever! :)

In order for the font to be small enough to truly sit in a corner without obscuring any of the icons I'm using (I used the fire icon as the test because it actually has the smallest footprint.), it needs to be so small that the font looses all unique personality.

(Ariel at 8pt is the only one thats even readable.)

Enlarging the text to the size necessary to use more unique fonts would consume 1/4th of the 24x24 pixel icon. I do not want to make that sacrifice, and, in my personal and artistic view I like symbolic representation over text/numbers anyways.

Hey!

I just had an idea, what about slowly reveling the icon?

Pure Black: ShowHide

Colored & Outlined: ShowHide

Catcha all tomorrow!

It's cool, but it's hard to guess what the max level is.

The spell was always exactly same and you couldn't have more than one of the spell at a time. It didn't have random pixels in front of the name to tell what level it was, it was simply Fire I, Fire II, Fire XVI etc. And it had 16 levels, not 8 or 10.

For the topic; I'd say reveal the blue background of the icon slowly instead of the flame icon, since you can then always see the spell in the icon, even if it's at level 1 or 2.

Point still valid. FFII didn't have 100 hours of gameplay, yet it had spells of 16 levels.

If Mevi is planning on using a similiar leveling system as in FFII then I take my word back; it's actually quite clever (instead of the normal tier system).

It was such a simple question.  :uhm:

I thank those who know they deserve thanks.

Ive received enough feedback to move forward in my design.
