Title: Challenge- Bring it.
Post by: Magus on May 26, 2010, 05:20:46 pm
Yes, I'm bored.

So, here's what I'm going to do. Me (and anyone else who joins)  are going to play through any rpg maker xp game you submit to this post. As proof of playing through the game, we'll have to take a screen shot of the final boss or answer 1-2 questions of yours.

What can you submit:
-NO GAMES USING THE RPG MAKER DEFAULT BATTLE SYSTEM. Sorry, but I just can't play those games :/ they fail miserably and YOU know it.
- Side battlers are accepted
- Abs, including blizz-abs games are accepted.
- Think of this as a chance to FINALLY get someone to play your game. I'm offering my audience-ship. Accept it and let me play your game.
- NO DEMOS ALLOWED. I FUCKING HATE DEMOS AND WHAT'S THE POINT OF THEM ON RPG MAKER.
- ONLY rpg maker XP games allowed. Vx is for n00bs, so sorry.
- Game must have at least 2 hours of game play. Or if its extremely awesome, I'll bend that rule for nothing less than an hour. Otherwise 2 or more hours of gameplay.
- Abs games are going to be played before the side-battlers because their faster to finish/
- If you join me, you ARE allowed to submit your games as well. After all, this is all for fun.
- First come, first server :P Obviously.
- I WILL RATE YOUR GAME 1-50, after finishing it. If I hate it, it will get a low scove. Love it = higher score. That is all.
- I may give feedback as well, but don't get your hopes up.
- If anyone submits a Chrono Trigger-like game, kick ass XD
Anyway, let the challenge begin.

I'm in. I'll post the finished version of my game whenever I get around to it, but for now, I'm willing to take "the challenge" *cue extreme music*

I'd like to submit a demo of a RMVX game using the default battle system

I'm with Magus on this one. A = VX = Bad. B = Default battle system = Average, limiting and really ugly.
A+B = Me holding a sign saying "HOW FUCKING LAME ARE YOU?!?!"
Pardon the pun, but Modern Algebra.
Also, excuse my trolling, but y'know. I hate both of them concepts.

Niche, Magus. Both of you are absolute idiots. Quit calling people n00bs for using RMVX, when in actuality, you two are n00bs for using RMXP.

Why don't you two use a real game maker? Or, hey, maybe code from scratch like a real PROFESSIONAL.

As long as you two even use one of Enterbrain's products, you are in NO position to talk, at all. So get a life, you two, and stop being such hypocrites.

Never said it was noobish. Just said it was mediocre. Also, see if I care what you think.

You gotta love how he makes an idiot out of himself since what Branden did here is very far from trolling.

I don't appreciate being called a hypocrite, 'specially for something I didn't do. There is a difference between something being mediocre and being noobish. And just for the record:

IT WAS DESIGNED TO BE FOR NOOBS YOU IDIOT!

For the record, a lot of pros actually get their engines from somewhere else (considering the number of games that use the Unreal Engine, this shouldn't be surprising.)

Not that I'm saying that RPGMaker doesn't simplify things, I'm just saying that a good game's a good game, original engine or not.

Ok, whatever. I suggest we put the whole thing aside and get back to the matter at hand. Anyone got any submissions?

Of course an RPG Maker game can be good. I never said it couldn't. What I said, really, is that instead of using a "simple" approach, code it from scratch, or use an advanced engine like the Unreal Engine.

RPG Maker has its limits, and we all know that. Whether it be VX or XP, 2K3, 2K or 95. You will eventually run across a limitation that just pisses you off, like I always do. So I had some thoughts, and decided I am going to learn coding, maybe with C# in XNA. I already got a small grasp on C#(With the help of game_guy, thanks man.) with making applications, and my knowledge in that area will only grow in time, eventually I can maybe make a basic game.

Anyways, back on topic now. Yeah, I'll post a game. And it will be whatever game I please; VX or XP.

Ah, I see your point.

I wonder why he doesn't want any VX games? Some aspects of the interface are actually slightly more difficult to use (the fact that you have to go into the script editor to change the title and gameovers, for instance).

Not only that, but I've played a few smashing VX games in my time. Granted, XP has more good games for it, but it also has more crap, since it's been out longer.

I don't really get C# and C++ too well. But, speaking as someone who used to use C, it shouldn't be surprising.
It's like I found a new level of suck in myself when I discovered that C++ wasn't just C with classes...

Sure it can be vx, just don't expect it to be played. Unless you did something serious to the battle system.
On another note, good luck with scratch coding and for ambition, you get a level!

You know how much people are here that would play a VX game? Lots.

Yeah, I have played tons of good VX games. They were smashing. :)

Granted. But they aren't us. If you can make a good game using VX, sure, put it up. But if it uses the default battle system, for the very clear reasons that Mag took the time to write, we won't give it another look. Now can we please close the argument and have a little fun?

Okay, then have Magus change the rules in the first post to reflect that statement. Personally, if I was a mod of this section, I would have locked this topic the second I saw what he said about VX.

I think that's reasonable enough.

Hey, I never came across limitations. Well, I always keep myself inside the lines. I don't try make a platformer with RM, I would do that with GM. But yeah, I'm learning C# right now, and when I can make a good program in C#, I'll go on and learn how to make a game with C#.

OT: If I EVER finish my game, low chance, I'll post it here (unless the topic's dead or I forget it, of course).

I love the lack of appreciation for a classic battle system just because it's default.

If everyone judged games like that, most of the Shin Megami Tensei games would be labeled "crap" because they use a front view classic JRPG battle system.

That pretty much just invalidated anything about this thread for me.

Also, Phantasy Star.

I don't really get the bias against the default system. Turn-based is turn-based no matter how you slice it. The default DAMAGE CALCULATION is pretty whack, but other than that, I think the default isn't so bad. Except... I don't really fuck with turn-based games that much; I prefer to create games with ABSes.

I don't get it either. Lexima's battle system is default, just with lots of modifications. Either way you look at it, it's basically default still.

I mean, if you can't stand the default, just throw a few addons into it; maybe hp/sp bars, ring command menu, enemy hp/sp bars. After that, it makes it much more fun.

Suppose it depends on your definition of default. I honestly cannot stand turn based games, Lexima being an exception. Tis all just a matter of personal preference.

Golden Sun and Baten Kaitos. They both habe turnbased battle system and are batter than nearly all ABS games out there.

That's because the creators had quality in mind when making the games in question. I'll play Golden Sun as easily as any Zelda games because Camelot can create badass games.

A big mistake a lot of n00bs with RM make is to use an ABS... without knowing how to do anything beforehand. It makes for an annoying button-mashing experience where you wonder why they DIDN'T just keep the default system.

Turn-based games are difficult to balance, however, which is why I haven't made that many.

I will soon, probably a few chapters or so. Things I'm currently doing:  Working on the query letter to send to literary agencies and going through some lite editing. (lite because I editing as much as I can while typing. I start of books by hand writing and then typing up afterwards.)
