Well now you can jailbreak your ipod on the fly. Just go to http://jailbreakme.com From what I'm getting it works on all versions of the ipod/iphone and any firmware up to 4.0.1.
I tried it on my 3.1.3 2nd gen, mc model and it works perfectly.
Not much of a tutorial, but the site is easy, its self explanatory. So go to safari on your ipod/phone, go to http://jailbreakme.com and Slide the slider to jailbreak.
Yup, that's how I jailbroke my phone as well. It's actually really simple; it was considerably harder before jailbreakme.com came around; now you just go to the site and slide the thingy. Aah, modern technology! XD
I know <3 Its awesome, no more blackrain or redsnow or running programs to modify firmware then manually restore your ipod with the modded firmware. Confusing.
I still haven't updated to iOS4 for that matter. Thanks, this will make jailbreaking easier and quicker. :)

Depending on your device, you may not want to. On the iPhone 3G and the iPod Touch 2G, I've heard iOS4 makes the device feel a bit sluggish. However, I have it on my 3GS and think it's fantastic and haven't experienced any slowdown. The newer phones have the extra RAM needed for the new OS to run properly. Of course, I don't have any first-hand experience with it on an older device, so it may be nothing more than a rumor.
I do have an iPod Touch 3G, but I think my 8 GB model has less RAM than the 32 GB and 64 GB models. :/ A collegue at work is using already iOS4 on his iPod Touch 3G and he says it's buggy. IDK if that could be a problem with the RAM.

The 8 GB model of the 3G is identical to the 2G models, not only in regards to RAM but the processor as well, along with... well, everything else, actually. They really are exactly the same device. XD
The 32GB and 64GB models, on the other hands, share the same specs as the iPhone 3GS, with a faster processor and additional RAM.
As far as I know, there are 3 different iPod Touch 3G models. One model is the 32 GB and 64 GB model and there are two models with 8 GB. One is almost identical to the 2G model and the other has a faster CPU, though, it's not as fast as the iPhone 3GS's CPU. The latter wasn't produced a lot since they figured that they can sell them with 2G hardware so they just upgraded the OS and called it 3G. The faster 3G model is closer to the 2G model than it is to the iPhone 3GS, that's sure.
I know that because the model from my collegue seems a bit faster than mine even though he has way more apps slowing it all down. Both are jailbroken, of course.
Bunch of stinking hustlers, that's what's Apple. :/ They put almost the same identical hardware into the weaker 3G model and sell it for a higher price than the 2G model.

There are a few reasons why your collegue's iPod may seem faster than yours even though they share the same hardware.
I saw an article on it once, but I can't seem to find it again. Anyway, Winterboard and having too many background apps running such as OpenSSH can be responsible for the speed decrease.
Of course, it's possible I'm entirely wrong - I'll be the first to admit that I often am - but I thought I'd at least throw my opinion out here.

Runs perfectly on my 2G iTouch.
It might then work with my iPod Touch 3G as well.
@Rose: It's not really common knowledge. I know that article, I've read it myself. But wiki isn't absolute knowledge and doesn't really go into detail. Also, as you can see from that article:

They tuned up the 1G model's CPU as well. Wouldn't be surprised if they did the same during the production of the 2G models sold as 3G without really telling anyone about it. It's not like 412 MHz is much of a difference compared to 400 MHz. Apple doesn't even use the exact same hardware during each production series either. My collegue's iPod Touch 3G's screen is different from mine. Mine has a higher view angle and only does that contrast change in one direction while his does it in two directions. Even though we have the same model, they don't have the actual same screens.
None of us had Springboard or Winterboard installed when we checked. It's a slight difference meaning that there were two different production series, but one was obviously abandoned and they decided to change something. It's possible that they simply changed the CPU. When you have a CPU with more cache memory, it's very likely that it will work faster than a CPU without as much cache memory.

It says all iPod Touches 3G have iOS 3.1.1. Wrong. When I got mine, it had 3.1.2. IDK about my collegue's.
Those articles aren't always accurate because they are put together by people rather than actual personal working at companies, actual scientists working on specific projects, etc.
