Sony is an electronics company, not a government agency or whatever that can just do this. Every company has its time to go, and Sony's is now, in my honest opinion.

Reminds me of Activision. They threatened not to pay the guys who made Call of Duty 4 if they didn't make Call of Duty 5 back then. It was something about half a billion dollar or so. The developers were able to file a lawsuit and won the case.

the producers are staring to feel more entitled to their rights than the consumer. that despite the fact that the consumer bought their product it is still theirs. in the last 3 years intellectual property law and the enforcement of it have started to become big topics. fuck fair use, it's way to vague and doesn't give the protection it should. there needs to be a broader and uniformly enforced version of it. not this double stranded crap we have now.
If you don't like what a company does, don't wait for some authority to stop them from it. Just stop buying their products and tell other people about it. If enough people don't like it, the company will have to stop or it will lose money. That's how our economy /should/ work.

The last thing I am buying from Sony will be the NGP if they manage to not be counter-sued by the hundreds of thousands of people who watched the video and go bankrupt.

I actually stopped buying sony and coca cola products at all... in case of coca cola, it's because of the crimes on human rights they are involved in especially in columbia, and I reccomend everyone to do the same.
If you don't want them to do whatever they want, don't give them your money to do so.

google has been a stand-up company in this area. they don;t do all the bullshit other companies do when it come to intellectual property. they aren't about to fork over that information without a court order to do so, and then they will likely try to fight it.
Google did some 10/10 interlectual property trolling, though. You know that google project with the digitalized books they have? Well.. they didn't exactly have the rights to scan alot of them, they just did it, got complains and lawsuits, but payed their way out of it and in that way didn't really leave the authors and publishers a (uncomplicated) way to say no. Or so I read.

You're right. And if they are thrown a court order their way to do so, I have lost all faith in America and its legal system.

I pay real money for Sony products and I honestly wouldn't have it any other way, frankly because I have never in my life been disappointed with something I've bought from Sony. That's just me I guess...
I don't believe in ANY way that what Sony is doing as a company is wrong, but it is seriously a real shame that a kids love for video games and computers is possibly going to ruin his life. Video games are fun. I love me a good video game, and that love for video games shouldn't cause a fucking calamity within your life, Lol.

I find it odd that Sony is being viewed as some mean evil company over this, with many of you speaking about boycotting the company and what not. Sony's recurring problem with people hacking their products is becoming a costly issue to the company I am sure, which is directly proportional to the livelihood of those same people who work there. I admit that I have downloaded ROMS, and I make no excuse for it and say that I am somehow justified. I fully understand that I am stealing. Anyone who attempts to justify it and say otherwise is a fool. It doesn't matter if you are a beggar in the street and Sony is a mult-billion dollar a month company, stealing is stealing.
So how can so many be so angry about a company being pissed and wanting some type of compensation from those who steal from them? I know if someone stole from me, I'd be pissed. I would be even more pissed if I poured millions and millions of dollars into development of gaming consoles, which repeatedly were hacked. This drastically reduces their profits. I especially understand their anger over their flagship system being hacked when it is still current on the market.
I'm not going to boycott Sony. I don't wish for the end of the business. Neither do I wish for anyone who ever downloaded a ROM or Jailbroke a PS3 to got to jail. It appears Sony is just pissed, and acting like it. They may even just be trying to send a message that it is pissing them off to discourage, or bring more attention to it. I'd be pissed if I were them, too, but this is not going to affect what I download.

Yeah, hence this statement. You can't sue somebody just for watching a video (kiddie porn excluded, sorry Tugger :P), so if I were you I would not even worry about that. There is no legal precident that will allow them to sue you for watching a video on how to theoretically Jailbreak a PS3. It's not like anyone went and actually did it ;). the thing is that nothing was stolen in this instance now if he was hacking roms I could understand. but all he dis was make it so the console could run and program the users wanted it to run. if the program was a stolen rom then thats the users fault as the USER STOLE the rom. if however that program was an original homebrew then that should be, and IS, legal. what this is about is jail breaking, an act that was just legalized for mobile phones, if the act is illegal on everything else then the law is upholding a bullshit double standard.
and the whole pushing for twitter and Google to out everyone who had contact with the information is just stupid and on no grounds legally justified. companies do this all the time, they go way beyond their rights hoping that they will get at least a little bit of their request fulfilled. and if it dose suddenly they have case law to back them up when they try to go even further next time. after several successes they have enough case law to propose a bill and make it legislation. it's bullshit maneuvering to make themselves more powerful.

I also agree that Sony is entitled to their anger, but suing everybody who watched the video makes no sense. That's almost like putting somebody in prison because he saw somebody else committing a crime. Eh, WTF? You commit a crime, I see it and we both go to prison? That makes no sense.
Even though Google has been the most decent company around in the last years, I fear that if Google continues to grow, we will end up with another Microsoft so I am actually boycotting Google. I use only GMail, Google Docs and Adsense and no other of their services. This is also a reason why I am not getting Google Chrome.
There is one funny fact about pirates and hackers, though. Most of them would never buy the product anyway. Virtually companies lose very little money to piracy. A hacker pirates and plays a game. If he can't pirate it, he doesn't buy it instead. Piracy is actually good for the companies because they get more exposure and virtually no losses. And obviously the companies CAN afford it. If they couldn't afford it, they wouldn't spend a few millions to buy a few 100000 copies of their own games only to increase the sales and get on the top lists! Yes, companies do that. EA Games, Activision, Blizzard, all the big guys do it. It's usually part of the marketing budget. :/

I too fear it'll be another Microsoft, but I'm hoping that won't happen for a long time. I think Google won't become like that anytime soon, because it generates most of its profits from ads, and I don't see much scope for unlawful use of Google's services there. The consumers of Google's services don't have the option of ripping Google off, or stealing from it, so Google doesn't have to resort to aggressive strategies. With companies like MS, it's different. They generate profits from software products and they're shit scared of piracy, which is rampant.
EDIT: Oh yeah, the original topic. Sony suing people who watched the video is absurd, but suing the George Hotz makes sense. But asking him to surrender ALL his computer hardware including CD/DVD ROMs? Again, absurd. If anything, I see it as Sony's temper tantrum and/or a desperate attempt to scare pirates. Whether they are really in that desperate a situation is a different question (I think they are not).

Good point there. And i too think it's just stupid what Sony is trying to do, but go out of business? I don't think that they should just yet. A little boycott to give them a warning not to go over the top. I mean this is getting out of hands but, let's stop for a moment to think the real reason why Sony is doing this. They are not doing as well as they would like in the console markets, so they put up this show to spark peoples interests and get them to buy it out of curiosity. Sure this is stupid, and i'm not defending Sony for that. I am however defending them in that if Sony were to quit business, the sort of 'balance of power' would shift too greatly to Nintendo and especially Microsoft.
Imagine MS running most of the show. It needs a counterbalance and Nintendo is not fully capable to keep MS in restraints. This is due to them having softened over times. And since there is no upcoming new or returning console makers, the balance would shift to MS, and they would be able to control most of the market, especially in the US. Without Sony, most games would be Xbox/PC only or Nintendo only, and not so much multi-console as they are now, thanks to the balance.
And for now, i can't make up more arguments. But if the need arises, i will make more...

If you have your list and you judge who you put on that list and who not, then Branden is entitled to do the same. You are not an absolute measure of what is right and what is wrong. If you put somebody on your list, it doesn't mean everybody else has to. And this is not logic, this is personal opinion so stop trying to pass it on as logic. In your eyes Branden's opinion may be "flawed", but you are everybody is entitled to their opinion. If he wants to continue buying Coca Cola products, that's his thing.

I didn't boycott Coca Cola because this topic is about Sony. And to be honest, at the time I did not know exactly WHAT Coca Cola did.

Sony taking away George's personal possessions incredibly unnecessary, I agree. What they are even doing to him to begin with, is unnecessary. He just made a jailbreak, and is getting in trouble for what OTHER people did with it.
Sony should just open their fucking eyes and accept that people want more from their multi-hundred dollar gaming system, THEY payed for. If I want to put on a homebrew application, like a text editor, I can fucking do it if I please. Sony is just afraid of people making their systems better, and never do THAT themselves. This is why the PSP started out at a firmware of v1.0 and is now at a firmware version of 6.37 and has not changed at all, save for a few insignificant new features. It's pathetic.
