We need character sprites for all four main characters, check their concept art.
We should probably wait until the concept art is at least finished to start on the sprites, don't you think?

Are we doing movement sprites only (for charaters) or also run/idl/jump/etc sprites?

Yes. It's good that this topic is here; I'm just saying that it might be best to wait to work on the actual sprites until we've finalized what the characters look like so that you don't have to start over if we change anything.
