So, due to some totally hillarious events lately, I've sunken into some pretty heavy depression. I had alot of moodswings before since I'm that kind of a bastard, but now I end up laying in my bed for 12 hours, staring at the ceiling and doing nothing. I barely sleep and barely eat and I really don't give a fuck about anything.
Now, I'm not the kind of person to give up or cry all day really. I'm also aware that there are people that are alot worse off than me. I want to get out of this and I know it's gonna need alot of work. So, I think the first thing I need is distraction. The only two friends that managed to distract me so far don't have alot of time right now (they are gonna have an important test in one week). I tried video games, but most of them are too shallow to really distract me. I tried reading books, but I end up reading the same page twice because I can't concentrate. I tried watching movies, anime etc, but I end up stopping them after 30 minutes, at best. I tried drugs, and, well, that helped, but only as long as they lasted. I tried going out, doing the things people at my age usually do, go to clubs etc., but I'm just not the guy for that.
I know that ultimately I'll have to get out of this by myself, but until then, anyone have an idea what could distract me? Any suggestions would be welcome.
Well, you could make some new friends, like penpals even, and just chat with them about things? I believe you added me on face-crack, so just get my number and text me? I'm always open to talk to people, and im kinda a peer counselor of sorts. Or even just email me, which you can get from my profile here... Either way, im always available to talk to ya.
Thank you. I really appreciate it. Probably can't text you because I'm in germany (funnily enough me being in germany is part of the problem), but I'd talk to you on facebook if it's ok.
First off, get up, get dressed (nicely, I might add) and do your hair. Shave your face and put on a good aftershave. Trim your nails, and your nose hair and put on a good smile. Now, go out to a mall or something when it's busy and say "hi" to every girl you see, while (genuinely) smiling. Regardless of their reaction, just do it.
After that, treat yourself to a nice steak dinner. It doesn't even have to be steak, just nice. You don't even have to go with friends.
Avoid sex, drugs, or alcohol.
After that, if you don't feel better, I don't know what else to tell you...
Thank you, but I'm sick of faking smiles, and to genuinely smile.. it's too early for that. As for the dinner, I can't even afford standard food. To be honest, I can't even pay my rent this month.
I drowned myself in pools of different anime/movies and such the last time I fell hard into depression. I discover that lots of mindless activities (ie: a game that can be grinded hard, Lego sculpting, etc) can really be an effective distraction from depression.
Obviously, these are not solutions to make yourself feel better, but it definitely will do the job since it doesn't really... require you to pay digest information(like reading a book or playing a story-driven game), but it does require your focus and involvement to proceed.
What would be good would be a game with a story you can get lost in. But other game suggestions would be good to... godammit, I just need something to stop me from thinking.
Due to sheer amount of grinding and leveling potential, I found the Shining Force NEO/Shining Force EXA games really easy to lose myself in. Action-RPG's that have near endless grinding potential, with stories that are predictable and thus easy to follow without a huge amount of thought, yet classic and their cheesiness may even crack a smile on your frowning face.
Also, games like Tetris may help if you just can't get a hold of the above games. Mario 64 can be emulated. Etc.
I might try these, thanks. I actually just a few moments ago called one of my best friends and we decided we'll play a shitload of games from our childhood together.
Nostalgia may help a bit.
And horror movies. Alot of them. Today I'll watch American Psycho... let's hope it's good.
Hey, well, thats good.
Enjoy yourself, let the nostalgia take over.
You just remember to take care of yourself, and don't do anything reckless. :)

I sometimes like to shut down and watch anime/series or play games. But after a while I start getting depressed from that. >.< I know how you feel.
I wish something would come to my mind that could help you. I mean, I do have a couple of ideas, but I don't think you would be interested in that. Have you thought about taking on a completely new hobby? Maybe some sport?

I'm not really a sportive person, but I tried things like that - I failed at motivating myself enough though. Hell, I can't even get myself to get up.. the reason why I woke up every morning just was forcefully taken away from me, and now not even having three different alarms seems to help. >.<
I didn't mean physically active sports. You can play chess, billiard, dart, table tennis, etc. Those are all sports, but don't require that much physical effort.

I might try that. Thanks.
Yes, you can always chat with me on facebook.. I have it sent to my phone, so I'm sure to answer... i believe I just posted my face-crack URL in the facebook thread too... As to Blizz's suggestion, I second it. I played billiards all the time when I was down on my luck, and, although it never solved the problem, it made it forgettable, temporarily.
Try badminton! I love badminton.
Yeah, badminton is fun, too.
Chat with me on either Facebook or MSN. @.@
I wanted to, but I seemed to miss you every time. :S
Also, Portal 2 with a friend works a bit.
I don't know ya very well, but I personally think that you should delve deep into something. As you said above, something that doesn't really require any thought.
While on the topic of games, why don't you play a game that you beat already? Load that character, and if there's anything left undone...done it.?
It'd be just mindless fun-- you wouldn't need to bother with the 'shallow' storyline, and maybe even killing a few Super Mutants or whatever will 'get back at the world' and cheer you up.
Though you could also, as I said, do something you usually do. If you like writing, then write-- get your thoughts out. If you draw, draw the shit out of a poster or something. Just do something to 'get the emotion out'.
Moping around won't really do crap, as it'll just keep bringing back the thoughts of whatever's making you depressed in the first place. You could even try sleeping, if you think that'd help.
Or do something laboring, something physical. If you exhaust yourself, you won't have the mental/physical capacity to deal with whatever bullshit you're going through, and you may even forget about it entirely.
That's just my two cents, anyway. I'm no psychologist.
Thanks for all the tips, I followed alot of them and it kind of helped. Spend from thursday to Sunday at a friends house, and we spend all the time with making music and various video games, movies, and driving around in his car randomly. Every day there were different people there, so at most times we were 3-7 people, getting wasted, playing mario party, jamming out and cooking questionable foods. And we played through portal 2. So, yes, I'm probably not much better, but it provided distraction, and made me notice I can still have fun which is kind of relieving to know.
So, thanks. :) I'd still be happy about other suggestions, too.
