Title: RMXP Made Ipod App?
Post by: Event Master on May 24, 2011, 03:26:54 pm
This is something I just stumbled upon, and felt it needed addressed. There is an Ipod App on the app store right now called 7 Stories made by Smashware. They are charging $2.99 for it as of today. All of the tileset used in the game are RTP, most characters are too, and the battle screen in the screenshot is also RTP. I says it was posted on May 12, 2011, and I want to know, how in the world did they do this? I've searched endlessly online for anything on it, but I can't find anything about this app.

Does anybody have any information about this app?
If they did use RMXP to make it, how!?

My guess is that they took the graphics and scripts from RMXP and stuck them into another engine made for iOS.  So essentially, they ported from RMXP to another engine.  Just my guess though.

Since there is no iOS version of RMXP, I am going with winkio's guess.

Be aware that what they did is actually illegal. The RTP license allows the usage of the RTP only with RMXP. If the game is successful enough and Enterbrain gets wind of what they did, Enterbrain will sue them.

LMFAO

Yeah, I can take RTP graphics into another engine, too.

For both engines then? On their screenshots both XP and VX graphics are used.
I hope they get sued. I'm even tempted to write to EB.

This is definitely not legal. I give it a week tops before it's taken down, probably along with the company that is responsible for its creation.

It's just a matter of time when they will get a comment from somebody that realizes what they have done.

Though i'm stating the obvious, i'll still say it...
In Ash, the graphics are from VX...
But it looks nice... If i had an iPad or iPhone or iPod touch, i just might get it. I like how the battle system looks like.

I see someone commented, on it, informing them of the questionable legality of it  :naughty:

Lol, I am downloading the IPA for this before they get sued. Just to see if it's as good as people say when I get my new iPad. Although, I am not holding my breath on this one being that great.

It is possible that they made a separate license agreement with Enterbrain about using the resources for their iPod game.
I find it unlikely, but I as an outsider cannot know whether it is illegal or not.

I have never liked people falsely accusing other people of illegality.
The proper procedure would be to alert Enterbrain of the game so they can take further action if needed:

Zeriab, I honestly doubt this person made any sort of successful contact with Enterbrain, let alone got permission to use the RTP. :/

Though I agree with you, I think Zeriab was just pointing out that it's a possibility that this entire game was produced and distributed within the boundaries of the law.

As far as I have read about the other game called Ash, RMXP apparently did license their RTP for use outside of RMXP for them. Do you know what that means? It means that people who want to use their game commercially CAN use the RTP if Enterbrain says it's ok! :D

If they say it's okay, what kind if royalties would you have to pay? I know they aren't going to give you rights for free(sure he could have paid them, but I doubt he'd even). And I do not know where I'd check, but I have a strong hunch that this guy didn't even credit Enterbrain for any of the RTP used. Before people would lay down the truth, he'd get a lot of compliments about how great "his" graphics look. Hell, even major reviewers like IGN(if I recall correctly, they were one), liked "his" graphics. I dunno, but I think this guy will get in a whole heap of trouble, and I'll lol uncontrollably when it happens.

Hmm.. Well, the thing is, they can't really "prove" that he didn't put the credits somewhere into the game, without "decompiling" it (or really, just looking through the code, because I'm sure they're able to), which depending on the country, you're not supposed to do... Though, I agree, they probably didn't credit them, and to sum it up, I'll quote tugg:

Yes, yes they can prove it. And yes, yes they can decompile it if they so wish to get proof if needed, as it would have been their property he stole and is making money off of.

EDIT: What the fuck am I thinking? They would know they did not give credit. And this guy is still an idiot for testing the waters like this.

Wait, my friend is working on a game with XNA Game Studio, and we were thinking about using RTP graphics. Would this be illegal even though we're not making a profit on the game?

Its illegal but Enterbrain won't do anything unless you are making a profit off of it.

Yes, just as illegal. And I would still not recommend doing it no matter what people tell you otherwise.

fan-games and free games are allowed to use copyrighted materials to some extent.  Look at all the flash versions of Mario up on the internet, for example.  I would still recommend you make your own graphics, it's a good experience.

It is probably illegal if you do not get permission from Enterbrain or whoever has the rights to license you the resources.
You can try and ask Enterbrain if you can use the resources for free or for a one time payment. (Royalties are a bad idea as it's free)
Of course you can just not ask an hope nothing happens. Besides, if anything happen it would probably just be a cease and desist.

Look at all the nice music you can find on the web. :V
It is true that under fair-use it would probably be legal for me to use some of Enterbrains resources in a RMXP tutorial.
